Will it get to a time that some of us will travel abroad for vacation or studies, or we will just remain here in Nigeria and become champions that never left the shores of Nigeria The daunting challenges of life gave me this question, i wander if any body out there ever felt this way.... advice and counsel will do greatly. thanks |

OUR 5 CORE DUTIES AS CHRISTAIN CITIZENS; Final Chapter. In this final Chapter of this editorial I intend to explain the remaining two (2) duties of a Christian citizen because of it invaluable precinct to our discussion. Duty 4: Help Elect Godly People Help select and elect men and women of God to public office at the local, state, and federal levels. Support them faithfully throughout their tenure by sharing biblical version on issues praying for them and encouraging them. Rejoice rule brings rejoicing “With good men in authority, the people rejoice, but with the wicked in power, they groan” (Proverbs 29:2). Criteria for selecting Godly candidates; The word of God has given us the basic qualifications of good candidates. It says: “ Find some capable, godly, honest men who hate bribes, and… let these men be responsible to serve the people with justice at all times” (Exodus 18: 21 &22). The six qualifications listed in the passage are: demonstrated capability (competence in managing business or professional affairs), godliness (spiritual maturity), honesty, integrity, industriousness, and justice. Lets apply these God-given standards carefully and prayerfully in selecting our candidates in every elections. Lets also hear from wise words from one of Americas founding father’s Noah Webster he said: “If men of wisdom and knowledge, of moderation and temperance, of patience, fortitude and perseverance, of sobriety and true republican simplicity of manners, of zeal for the honor of the Supreme Being and the welfare of the commonwealth; if men possessed of these other excellent qualities are chosen to fill the seats of government, we may expect that our affairs will rest on a solid and permanent foundation.” Electing Godly people to rule cannot be attain in seclusion we most continue looking for and screening new candidates (before and after elections), for various public offices at the local, state and national levels by their commitment, support and zeal for God and service to humanity. We as Christians citizen most continue to pray, serve, witness help neighbors and love others. Finally exercise your privileged right on election day… Duty 5: Vote It is commonly believed that decisions in Nigeria are made by majority of the people. Well this is not so. Decisions are made by a majority of those who vote. Why we most all votes: Only when you cast your vote do you fulfill your Christian responsibility in government. If we fail to vote conscientiously for godly rule, evil will increase in our nation. “When rulers are wicked, their people are too’’ (Proverbs 29:16). Our nation will bear the consequences of our action or inaction. “You will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the Lord will not answer you in that day”. (1 Samuel 8:18). Martin has this to say “Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressman and government officials, but the voters of this country.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr., Minister and American Civil Rights Activist. How do you know who to vote? In making such decisions most importantly let God’s word be our guide. “Godliness exalts a nation” (Proverbs 14:34). Failure to do so will mean disobedience to God. “They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval” (Hosea 8:4) Secondly, know the candidates’ views; make sincere effort to obtain reliable information about all issues and the candidate, by forming a candidate selection committee and have them report their to Christians public to aid decision making. Know that candidate’s principals are more important than his party affiliations. To place our confidence on an unworthy candidate is a miscarriage of Christian stewardship and it can be like to trying to chew gum with sore tooth. (Proverbs 25:19) If there is no qualified candidate who is spiritually mature, vote for the one whose personal principles and platforms most nearly agree with your Christian position based on the bible. The implication of voting a wrong/bad candidate will be monumental, ranging from squandering of public revenues, rights of citizens would be greatly violated, amongst us. BAD LEADERS ARE ELECTED BY GOOD PEOPLE WHO DO NOT VOTE. Vote and allow God perfect His will for us. Long live our faith Long live Nigeria May God bless us all Culled from: Bill Bright; campus crusade |
OUR 5 CORE DUTIES AS CHRISTAIN CITIZENS Chapter 2 No matter what country you live in you are generally affected by the politics in that country. Sometimes you are free to vote for the people who are elected into positions of government, such as in Nigeria. Sometimes you are pleased with the results of the election and other times you are at the mercy of the government. If the latter is the case then it is our negligence as Christians to fulfill one or all of our 5 core duties as Christian citizens. Duty 1- Pray It is undeniable that our once great nation is now mired with numerous social troubles; Nigeria is facing a nonparallel moral, religious and ethnic crisis. God alone holds the panacea to our country’s numerous mayhem and we as Christians hold the KEY. The healing of our country begins with prayers of the saints. “If My people will humble themselves and pray, and search for Me, and turn from their wicked way, I will hear them from heaven and forgive their sins and heal their land’’ (2 Chronicles 7:14). We can pray in the followings ways: Pray without ceasing; the 1st step is pray to God for the enabling grace to live a righteous life. Pray daily that God will change the hearts of, or remove from positions of public service any wicked ruler. Remember that godless rulership is contagious. As King Solomon said, “A wicked ruler will have wicked aides as staff” (Prov. 29:12). Pray day after day that men and women of God will be elected to public office at all levels of government and rulership only by so doing can we enjoy the blessings of God. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Ps. 33:12). For further studies on duty to pray check 1 Timo 2:2 Duty 2: Register to Vote Be registered as a qualified voter. To serve God as a citizen, you most become a regularly participating voter. Voting is a matter of stewardship under God, yet many millions of God’s people throughout Nigeria are not registered or have registered but snub collecting their PVCs. How can we as Christian citizens expect God to restore upright leadership through us if we can register and obtain our PVCs? “The good influence of godly citizens causes a city {state/nation} to prosper” (Prov. 11:11). Once you’ve registered or obtain your PVCs follow the next step below… Duty 3: Become Informed Organise and lead or participate in a study group to inform yourself and others concerning the structure of government, current political problems and issues, and how to serve God effectively in the political arena at your level of influence. Just as the untrained soldier is at the mercy of his foes, the uninformed Christian cannot prevail against evil forces in the world of politics. “The wiseman is crowned with knowledge” (Prov. 14:18). To be in the serve of our Lord in actual fact as a citizen, we must learn how to act for his glory within the scaffold of accessible political processes. Edited by Ngwai, Godwin Boyi 08036909157 |
OUR 5 CORE DUTIES AS CHRISTAIN CITIZENS Chapter 1 Background Citizenship in a free nation like Nigeria is a blessing from God, this is so because, we cannot decide what country to be born in and which not to. This therefore implies that just as the country owe us a duty, so do we owe a duty to our country more so as Christians. Our system of government assures every Christian a voice in the affairs of the nation and enables us to bring a heavenly perspective to the earthly realm. God want us to do his will in government, just as in church and home (I shall elucidate that in the next chapter). But too often have we disobeyed our Lord. We as Christians have die away from been “the salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” just as Christ commanded us. On the basis of that, the moral fiber of Nigeria is rotten away and our freedom to worship our Lord is in grave danger. We as Christians are in danger of losing our nation by “negligence” and with it our freedoms of assembly/gathering and probably our lives with it. God forbid this (amen) Edmund Burke a British statesman said “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men (Christians) to do nothing”. Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the world with more than half of the voting population Christians (R.C.C.G Statistics). If only this percentage of Christian voters will vote, we would produce the next president and hopefully some other public officers who off course, should be from our faith (not minding his denomination). Only by so doing, can we save our heads’ temporarily from the unruly annihilation bad regime might cost us as Christians and further achieve freedom to serve Him. Charles Finney in 1835 wrote: “the time has come that Christians most vote for honest men and take consistent ground in politics, or the Lord will curse them… God cannot sustain this free and blessed country that we love and pray for, unless the Church will take right grounds. Politics are a part of religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to the country as part of their duty to God… God will bless or curse this nation according to the course we Christians take in politics”. Charles Finney helps introduce half a million Americans to Christ, thou his words were to the Americans at that time, I strongly believe we can relate to this as Christians in Nigeria. Our nation’s course is up to us. God’s plan for a Nation’s Leadership : To protect his people, God warns us against un-godly leaders. The rule of a heinous leader is a direct violation of His desire. “The wicked shall not rule the godly, lest the godly be forced to do wrong”. (Psalm 125:3). Instead, God’s plan is for us to have leaders who know Him and rule in accordance to his word. 2Samuel 23:3 says “He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God’’. “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty- as well as the privilege and interest – of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.” (John Jay) Voting for and supporting moral candidates who support moral public policies is the minimum required of a Christian citizen in a system of democracy like ours. Godly people must vote for godly rulers. If Nigeria is to be saved, saved Nigerians must lead the way in leadership and elections. In the next chapters, I shall laconically explain the 5 core duties of Christian citizens, which are: Pray for our nation Register to Vote Become informed Help elect Godly people Vote By his grace each of above stated duties will be back up with references from the Holy Scripture. Hopefully by so doing us Christians will understand that it is our godly duty to vote godly candidates in any elections and at whatever level. God bless us as we read and may this text find an expression in our hearts. Edited by Ngwai, Godwin Boyi. 08036909157 |
