WIND ENERGY CAPACITY: 4kw COST OF EQUIPMENT: N800, 000 to N1, 200, 000 (depending on features the system has, Autonomy and brand used) COST OF RUNNING FOR 18HRS PER DAY: N0 COST OF SERVICING per year : Negligible TOTAL COST IN 5YEARS = N800, 000 to N1, 200, 000
ADVANTAGES OF WIND ENERGY 1. No running cost. Install and enjoy for years without spending on anything 2. No emmisions 3. Very easy and convinient to operate 4. Very reliable if the autonomy is well calculated 5. Saves you lots of money in the long term. 7. High life span. 25years for the wind turbines, 5years for the batteries. DISADVANTAGES OF WIND ENERGY 1. Very expensive setup 2. Not suitable for uban areas especially for large setups 3.Requires high level of expertise for setup and repairs. 4. The wind turbines could be an eye soar
Note: Wind energy is still the best source of renewable clean energy. Better than solar, biogas and petrol/diesel generators., but it is very impractical in many areas. Best place is in country homes with lots of space. Another problem is profiling the wind speeds in the area where it is to be used, wind speed and frequency are very irregular
|

Electricity remains a big challenge in our society and many have turned to electric generators run on petrol and diesel. In This article, I will be comparing the cost of powering a 3 bedroom flat/bungalow with renewable energy (solar, wind and biogas). The big question is WHICH IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE AND MUST REALIABLE? I WILL MAKE THIS ARTICLE AS SHORT AND CONCISE AS POSSIBLE, lets deal with other details in the comments there after Let’s look into Petrol/ diesel generators Solar power Wind power And BiogasThis thread will serve the purpose of answering your questions on this subject. POWERING A 3 BEDROOM FLAT/BUNGALOWAPPLIANCES: 2 32inch tv sets, one deep freezer, 4 standing/ceiling fans, 10 light points ETC DURATION: 18hours a day PETROL/DIESEL GENERATOR CAPACITY: 4kw COST OF EQUIPMENT: N90, 000 to N150, 000 (depending on the brand of generator you are buying) COST OF RUNNING FOR 18HRS PER DAY: N1,000 to N1,500 COST OF SERVICING per year : N6, 000 (proper servicing is once in 2 months) TOTAL COST IN 5YEARS = N1, 920, 000 to N2, 917, 500 ADVANTAGES OF PETROL/DIESEL GENERATOR 1. Low Setup cost 2. Cost of fueling daily may be convenient and easy to afford in the short term. 3. Reliable. The generator is very reliable so far it is kept in good shape. 4. Low maintenance cost 5. low expertise level required for setup, maintenance and repairs DISADVANTAGES OF PETROL/DIESEL GENERATORS 1. Noise 2. It is NOT CHEAP. Yes, using petrol/diesel generators is one of the most expensive means of generating electricity. It only seems cheap because it takes a little from you every day, but that little quickly adds up to millions in some years’ time. 3. Pollution: many have died from inhaling the carbon monoxide from the generator fumes. Research also shows that the fumes also affects the sperm quality in males leading to sterility without you even knowing. 4. Not easy, convenient to operate. |

Will like us to look into the max working voltages they work with and the stages of charging they both give And why their efficiencies are significantly different Charge controllers Must you use them?... DanielUnilag: @darealgeesam, sir, I don't mean to sound patronizing but I'm totally flabbergasted at ur wealth of experience. Keep up d good work. But I stil a notch unresolved. U stated d 80w panels will b connect in 4 strings of 2 panels connect in series. I.e. voltage = 2x17.5=35v. I tot d system was a 48v, 4 batts inverter set up. Or am I mistaken? My dear daniel, i am sorry for this late reply. Seen this question since u posted it but i have been sneaking in and out of nairaland. To ur question. Have u ever wondered y solar panels meant for 12 systems have an Voc (open circuit voltage) of at least 17v? That is the key question. The reason is because of the way technology has be homogenized. The manufacturers of solar panels, charge controllers,pv inverters, did not choose that standardization for fun. What you don't know obviously is. That your solar panels are EXACLY like you batteries. The only difference is the source of energy which is the sun. Now when u connect 2 batteries together, one of 13v and another at 11v. What happens is the battery of 13v drops to 11v immediately (as long as they are connected) and starts charging the battery of 11v in an instant the both can equilize at a voltage between 11v and 13v but will NEVER be 13v. Same with when a solar panel is connected to a discharged battery. It will never charge it at 17.5v. But the battery will surely over charge after a while because the panel will keep supplying charge to the battery until it attains 17.5v, obviously this is far more than a 12v battery shld take, because a 12v battery is 100% full at 13.4v. That is why you shld use a charge controller for charging. Once it is at 13.4v the charge controller will only supply a float charge to the battery so it wont over charge. There is a lot to say to this but the summary is 17v is the standard volts solar panels are designed to for 12v systems and this helps them give a good output, it will never charge at 17v especially with a charge controller. |

davinchi: What does it cost to have a 3.5 or 5 KVA Solar dependent light? I need the ABC's of everything I need and what load can it carry? Thanks ABC's may not be possible now. But there are lots of configurations especially for the panels and the batteries depending on how much you load it per time. But a good setup will cost about 1m for 3.5 kva to 2m for 5kva. How you intend to use it could actually is actually a big factor. This is drealgeesm |

GODAKPAN: This is the problem i have with online consultancy. People dont appreciate information. I already told you sir that 100ah battery will not last more than 2-3 hours with all the stated load. By the way mr chris i appreciate your contribution on this thread, but 100ah battery for 40,000?! What?! It shld not cost more than 25,000 at most. Mr. Samuel, i have answered the question u are asking now. You want it to last 5-6hours then buy 2 100ah batteries. You want it to last 18hrs then u need about 6 X 100ah batteries or better still 3 200ah batteries. Note this is based on the assumption that your tv is about 170w, fan is 60w and your bulb is 26w and that they will all be on for 18hrs.
You want a system that will give u good satisfaction? 18hrs at least everyday then budget about 300,000 just for equipments (no installation cost). This will give you 3X 200ah deep circle batteries, 6X 120W solar panels charge controller of 30a and a 1,000 watt inverter. All the best sir. You said u dont like explanations, i'm sorry, but you will end up being cheated and misinformed. It is not that i like making long posts. installation cost is how much for the 18hrs light you just mentioned so I know total cost, am in uyo The installation cost depends on who is installing for you. Can be as cheap as 10,000, but if the person is coming from outside uyo, expect it to be more |

Are we also going to pay Shekau? Dont mind them. You are right this program has to end! The FG must come up with a broader scheme that will touch more lives. |
Politics › Re: Ateke Tom Warn Buhari: Don’t Scrap Amnesty Programme by geesampower(m): 11:36am On Apr 11, 2015 |
tripod: The program was designed to end may 2015. The idea was to train and integrate the militants back into the society. This would have been achieved but for the lack of foresight and greed of gej. Now let me break it down. 1. Majority of the real agitators were left out of the program. 2. Not a single ex agitator was giving an elite trsining. Eg, piloting or scholaship to school abroad. The best they got was welding or the likes frm some third world states. 3. The initial idea was to attract investors like Hyundai heavy (ship builders), commence work on other trains of NLNG at Bonny, construct roads and other infrastructures amongst other things in the region. many of the boys would have been gainfully employed if gej had seen the plan thru. But the reality on ground after 5yrs is clear to all. Amnesty under jonathan is a drain pipe. The creeks are still very volatile because the govt was not sincere frm the onset. Simply put, amnesty is a SCAM? 4. The program was designed to have direct impact on the foot soldiers as the generals. But the focus as we have noticed is on a few ex warlords. No delibrate approach to achieving the original aim. The result is clear. Oil theft and vandalism is still high. 5. I have a friend who works in the amnesty office, she is a multi millionair. Like her, many of the ex warlords have properties scattered all over. Its just sharing and sharing and sharing. 6. Gej in his wisdom gave the militants contracts to protect the same pipelines they bursted to steal oil. Today it is a free for all siphoning. No more restrictions. The rate of spills in nigeria today is about the highest in recent times.
I could go on and on. Ateke recieves billions yearly frm the govt so am not suprised. Amnesty was largely turned into an 'ijaw only' business. Even ateke is begging for development in the region. That means gej deviated frm the original plan. He did nothing to advnce the program beyong hand outs.
Gej's exit is like a blessing in disguise. What the niger delta need at this point is a leader who will stand his grounds to make sure most of the programs and policies on the region. Not one who will prefer to put perfum over shiit and allow the stench hibernate for a while. God bless u brother. This is the real issue on ground. This amnesty program has to be reviewed, firmly but with caution. The benefactors will do anything to keep the largess flowing. I've been to several places in the Niger delta and i can boldly tell u, the real people in need of this program are not getting a dim. Most benefactors are drunks. Most of them have gotten small cars they drive around blasting music and driving recklessly, i mean real recklessly. It is time the Niger Deltans rise and say No to this scam. The leaders in that region are just a bunch of thieves! They are super rich at the expense of the people they claim to fight for and treated as dons. |

olatunji21: I doubt if u read d article, d tittle is misleading The title is not misleading. That is just the summary. We all know the real reason why these people are fighting (those threatening to go back to the creeks are all trying to protect their share of the national cake. NONE of them is after the development of the Niger delta. Go to the creeks, NOTHING has changed, but because of money they all laid down their weapons while the average Niger deltan continues in suffering. Hypocrites! |

Scrapping it will be difficult. But it is unfair to those not befitting from this. Should we all start blowing up infrastructures so we can all enjoy free salary? Say it is their oil. How many people are benefiting from this amnesty out of the millions living in the Niger Delta. In my own opinion, the militants are plain greedy set of people with only selfish interests. Many live in the Niger Delta, yet a few violent ones are the ones benefiting from the federal government. What has the top militants given back to their communities after making billions from the FG. Lets keep fooling ourselves |

DanielUnilag: @DRealGeesam, I av to say u r d best but I do av some criticisms on ur calc & I hop to mk dem constructive. Mayb it'll help if u can demystify d following query; 1. Aw did u arrive at 0.64kva? Was it based on chrgn current reqt or power reqt? 2. D solar circuit is DC so I fink 0.64kva shld b 0.64kw 3. Are d 80w panels arranged in series? If so... 17.5x8 = 140v 4. Thus, Wot is d rating of d mppt chrg controller if u proffer d same chrg controller for both 0.64kva & 1.42kva solar system? 5. Do d cost u enumerated above cover delivery & installation? Thks. Nice questions Lets look at it together 1. How did i arrive at 640w (0.64kw) for the charging? Answer for 4 200ah batteries of 12v each battery. Right? So what is the total capacitative power of the batteries. Power= Current X voltage P=200ahX4X12= 9600Wh Note: a good invert will shut down when the battery gets to 11.4V this is 50% of the battery charge. So our drained batteries still has 4800Wh left in it. Hope u get it so far? Our aim is ONLY to charge this battery, which means replacing the used 4800Wh Having an array that gives you 640W output an a day of good sunshine of 8hours that will give you 5120Wh in a day. So that is how i got .64kw o 2. YOU ARE RIGHT!!! damn it how did i make that mistake. There is no power factor to calculate into a dc power so it shld be KW not KVA, my mistake. Thumbs up. Thanks 3. Haba! Why should u connect it in series? Bros! U and i know the answer to this nau . But for the benefit of others the answer is no o. for 8 panels 4 strings in parallel with 2panels in series in each string. 4. 30amps is enough Thank you. This is drealgeesam |

samuelson06: Do you mean everything would fall within 150k? Absolutely, based on what he recommended (based on u requesting for a Very basic setup) But let me add this, at night when there is no sun, putting a tv of about 170w, a fan of 60w and a bulb of 26w, you wont use it for more than 2hrs. Reason is smart inverters wont allow u to drain ur battery more than 50% of their rated capacity. For a 100ah battery the true power over time you can get is 100ahX12V= 1,200Wh divided by 2 = 600Wh. Your electrical load is approximately 256W which gives you 2.3hrs of electricity. So you need to do electrical lod calculations and work towards what you really want, saving money and at the same time getting a reasonable service from the system. This is Drealgeesam |
