Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara on Tuesday conducted the swearing- in ceremony for Mr Abdulwaheed Olanipekun, the newly elected Chairman of Offa Local Government at the Government House, Ilorin. Ahmed urged Olanipekun to ensure he implemented people-friendly programmes to restore faith in democratic governance. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the PDP flag bearer was declared winner of Saturday’s local government election. “You must endeavour to provide transformational leadership and create shared prosperity to your people. “You must make yourself accessible, execute faithfully all electioneering campaign promises and carry along all stakeholders in your activities,” the governor said. Ahmed said it was a thing of joy that the exercise, which recorded a massive turn-out of voters, was adjudged free, fair and credible. He charged Olanipekun and the council’s 12 councilors to see their victory as an indication of the people’s confidence in their capabilities to offer good governance. In his response, Olanipekun promised to add value to local government administration by ensuring politics of inclusion. (NAN). http://thenationonlineng.net/new/new-offa-council-chairman-sworn-in/ |

Residents, visitors and investors in Ekiti State will in the next few weeks begin to enjoy uninterrupted broadband services as the State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi on Tuesday kicked off the first phase of the Optical Fibre Cable laying project for Ado Ekiti, the state capital. Speaking shortly after kick-starting the laying of the fibre optic cable at the Fajuyi Park, Governor Fayemi said his campaign promise to transform the State to a digital hub was not a gimmick but a step to make the state go digital thereby making it possible for it to join the world of information technology super highway and make the state the number one choice for people to live, work and play. When completed, Ado-Ekiti would be the fourth city after Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt to have the digital facility. Dr. Fayemi who added that the project is a major step towards transforming Ekiti State into the “Bangalore of Africa” stated that the step would move the state from being just a civil service state where government is the main industry and federal allocation is the life-blood of its economy. He stressed that the State Government needed to diversify, transform its economy and convert its renowned intellectual capital to prosperity for the people hence the inauguration of a steering committee on Ekiti Knowledge Zone. The Governor while reiterating the commitment of his administration to converting the intellectual capacity of the state for accelerated development asserted that the broadband services provide the possibility of stimulating the growth of existing businesses and catalyzing the establishment of new ones. “In spite of our State’s limited resources and competing priorities, we have taken this bold step in embracing the future. We have moved in the direction of greater efficiency and effectiveness in our daily lives and work. This is an investment in the future. It is the bridge that would connect our today with the enablement to achieve our vision of a preferred tomorrow. See the Ekiti of our dreams with your mind’s eye, believe it is achievable and passionately embrace a future filled with immense opportunities made possible by a Digital Ekiti”, he said. Dr. Fayemi stated that first phase of the project will cover about 8 km from the state government data centre to Tanterlizers, Fajuyi park, Bank road, State secretariat, GRA, and Christ School road and would be completed in the next 8 weeks. According to the Governor, the fibre optic cable would cover high speed internet access to home and offices at an affordable price, wi-fi hotspot at Fajuyi park, video conferencing, safe city security cameras, cable TV and e-education among others. In his remarks, the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Mr Kayode Jegede said the State Government believed in the intelligence of Ekiti people hence the decision not to bring a foreign company to execute the project. Jegede added that the project would be done on a Public Private Partnership basis. Also speaking the Managing Director of the IpnX Nigeria Limited, the company handling the project, Mr Ejovi Aror said Ado Ekiti would be the fourth city in Nigeria to have the fibre optic technology; saying that the vision of the state envisaging the leveraging of Information and Communication technologies to improve the socio- economic status of the state is commendable. Aror added that Ipnx is committed to laying a foundation on which a wide range of IT applications can be deployed in every aspect of a digital economy from e-commence, e- government, and e-healthcare among others. |

In the bid to actualise the Ekiti Digital Transformation Programme of the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration, the state government would commence the laying of fibre optic cables in designated areas of the state this week. Governor Fayemi will be performing the ground- breaking ceremony of the Phase 1 of the optical fibre cable laying project for Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Tuesday. The project, which is an outcome of the MOU signed between the Ekiti State Government and IPNX Nigeria Ltd sometimes in June, is in line with government’s initiative of transforming Ekiti State into a digital state. The laying of the fibre optic cable, which is expected to enhance effective internet connectivity in the state, is expected to last for eight weeks. Fibre optics cable is the fastest means of transmitting data. A single strand of fibre cable can transmit up to 100 gigabytes per sec, making it possible to simultaneously carry video, internet and telephone calls. Due to its capacity for almost limitless data speed, fibre-optics is the true enabler of broadband services. With the infrastructure of fibre optics based broadband being available in Ekiti State, the foundation is being laid for a transformation in the way Ekiti residents live, work, do business and play. The first phase will cover about 8 km from the Government Data Centre to Tantalizer, Fajuyi Park, Bank Road, State Secretariat, GRA/Onigari and Christ's School axis. Essential services that will be provided via the fibre cable in the areas covered include: high speed internet access to home and offices at an affordable price; Wi-fi hotspot at Fajuyi Park; telephone call services; Video Conferencing; Cable TV on demand (with many channels); Safe city security cameras; e-Education; e- Health |
August 28, 2013 - 22:21 The severity of Governor Danbaba Suntai’s brain damage became obvious to the leadership of the Taraba State House of Assembly who visited him today, two of the legislators have told SaharaReporters. A surprise invitation was extended to the lawmakers to meet Mr. Suntai after a group of state legislators threatened to commence the ailing governor’s impeachment. One of the lawmakers who saw Mr. Suntai said the sudden invitation was designed to placate lawmakers. The delegation of lawmakers was led by the speaker of the Taraba State Assembly, Haruna Tsokwa. Our sources revealed that the legislators met Mr. Suntai who was seated on a couch struggling to speak some words to the delegates. They disclosed that Mr. Suntai did not recognize any of the lawmakers. His speech was characterized as garbled, confused and mostly inaudible, according to one source. He added that, at one point, the brain- injured governor managed to say that one of them was his “big deputy.” The person he referred to then told Mr. Suntai that he was not his deputy. Our sources added that the bizarre meeting convinced the assembly leadership that Mr. Suntai was incapable of running the state. They retreated to a meeting at the state assembly. The meeting ended and the lawmakers left without addressing the media, the promised to return to the chambers tomorrow. Meanwhile, the cabal tied to Mr. Suntai that has sought to maneuver the sick governor back in office this evening carried out another charade by swearing in some so-called “newly appointed” government officials in the state. The alleged swearing-in took place at the governor’s dining room without any member of his executive council or security chiefs in attendance. There was no judicial officer in sight to administer the oath Mr. Suntai was made to seat on one of the chairs and at a point given a paper to read. A witness said it was unclear what he tried to do with the paper, at a point he spoke a few words in Hausa but for the rest of the event his voice was inaudible throughout the charade. http://www.saharareporters.com/news-page/suntai-unable-recognize-state-lawmakers-who-visited-him |
