Nairaland GeneralThe Hypocrisy Of ASUU: Fighting For Welfare While Exploiting Their Own Office St by generalbent(op): 4:29pm On Mar 31, 2025
For decades, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been at the forefront of the battle against the Nigerian government, demanding better wages, improved welfare, and a conducive working environment for university lecturers. They have staged countless strikes, disrupted academic calendars, and engaged in fierce negotiations, all in the name of securing fair treatment for their members. But behind this noble struggle lies a dark and troubling irony: while ASUU fights for better conditions from the government, it continues to exploit its own office staff—those employed in ASUU branch secretariats and the national secretariat.

The Unspoken Truth: ASUU Secretariat Staff as Victims

It is an open secret that many office staff employed by ASUU itself—administrative workers, secretaries, clerks, and support personnel—receive abysmally low salaries, sometimes far below the national minimum wage. While ASUU publicly condemns the government for failing to meet its demands, it remains deafeningly silent about the plight of these workers within its own structure. Some are paid as little as ₦30,000–₦50,000 per month, an amount that cannot sustain a decent livelihood in today’s economy. Meanwhile, the same ASUU executives who decry government oppression are the ones responsible for these unfair employment conditions.

Where is the Welfare for Their Own?

ASUU insists that universities should be autonomous and adequately funded, yet within its own organizational structure, many secretariat staff lack basic welfare benefits. No health insurance, no housing support, no pension plan—just a paycheck that barely covers transport fare to work. The situation is even worse for contract staff, who work tirelessly without job security or any clear career progression. When these workers attempt to speak up, they are often ignored or dismissed, making them victims of the very system meant to protect academic integrity and fairness.

Qualifications Ignored, Salaries Arbitrary.

Even more alarming is ASUU’s blatant disregard for academic qualifications when determining job positions and salaries for its secretariat staff. In many ASUU branches, employees with higher educational credentials are often placed in lower positions and paid the same—or even less—than their less-qualified counterparts. This lack of structure and fairness in remuneration further exposes the hypocrisy of an organization that claims to fight for academic excellence and merit-based rewards.

Can the ASUU President Deny This?

A thorough check on some branches' salary vouchers at the national level confirms that both the National Auditor and the National President are aware of the abnormalities going on in the branches but have chosen to ignore them. The silence of ASUU leadership on these issues raises serious questions about their commitment to fairness and justice within their own ranks.

ASUU’s Selective Activism

The union’s activism appears highly selective. While they passionately demand salary increments and allowances for lecturers, they do little to address the dire conditions of their own administrative staff. ASUU secretariats generate revenue through member dues and levies, yet there is little transparency about how these funds are utilized. Who benefits from these revenues? Why do those at the top enjoy the privileges while those at the bottom are left to struggle?

The Need for Accountability

If ASUU truly stands for justice, equity, and fairness, then it must first clean its own house before pointing fingers at the government. It cannot continue to demand better wages while presiding over a system that shortchanges its own workers. The union must push for internal reforms that ensure all categories of staff—including those working in ASUU secretariats—receive fair compensation and proper welfare. Until then, ASUU’s activism will remain nothing more than a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Conclusion

The fight for better conditions in Nigerian universities should be holistic. It should not just be about securing funds from the government but also ensuring that these funds are equitably distributed within ASUU itself. ASUU has a responsibility to protect all its workers, not just the lecturers it represents. Until this hypocrisy is addressed, the struggle for improved education and labor conditions in Nigeria will remain an illusion—one where the voices of the most vulnerable continue to be silenced.
