Cart before horse. Remove subsidy gradually but make sure local refineries work fully first so you don't import petrol tied to the dollar. Float the naira if you must but make sure your are a net exporter first. Floatation of any local currency by an import dependent economy is suicide.

Besides, believe you me, even first world economies take measures to defend their currency. If you abandon your currency to the vagaries of the wind when you produce nothing, you are beyond daft. You are suicidal.

Cart before the horse. That's what's going on, and that's what you are championing. Tail wagging the dog. Upside down logic.
So when Buhari refused floatation simply because of this same cart before the horse reason, why was he criticized by Obi and most of the analysts in 2022 where they said floatation is the only way? Don't you think Buhari was also waiting for the revamp of refineries and coming on of Dangote refinery?

Lolz. Only an ignoramus will not expect the current economic quagmire anytime that the subsidy on fuel and forex was to be removed. Tinubu has my respect, he stuck to his words and promises. Buhari said "what is subsidy?" before his election, just like Obi and Atiku. But he backed out and left the mess for his successor.
Tinubu is doing exactly what he promised he would do in that interview at Chattam House. People weren't just listening then.

I keep saying this. For about a year now, i’ve not come across a dollar note in this country. I don’t have to and I don’t need it. I have been spending in naira. Who are those spending this dollar apart from importers?
Politicians. Your Governors with high FAAC allocations.

I am not a foolish follower, the video are all there to see. He said and I quote,we will reduce the purchasing power of the people, and we can further slow down the economy and let us widen the tax net so and if its inclusive of Bola Tinubu and we shall take bigger and bigger taxes.

Culled from 11th Bola Tinubu colloquium.
Below is where he he said he does not believe in Nigeria.

In economics, when u reduce the purchasing power of the peoppe, what does it mean?

In the same economics,if u widen the tax net especially in a country that pays the lowest wage on the continent of Africa and the world at large,it means more poverty, hence the problem we are currently at now.

And to crown it all, coming from a man who told us in 1999 that he does not believe in Nigeria.

Oti kpari.
He didn't say that. Post the full video with your full chest if you get mind.

How can u vote for a man who said he never believed in Nigeria?

A man who said,he will ensure he shrink the purchasing power of the people, and he never stopped there.

He equally promised that,he would widen the tax net to further impoverish the People.

Here u are comparing Obi with Atiku.

If you don't repair the refineries, how do you get good price for them when you want to sell them?

This is IMF's recent review on Nigeria.

PoliticsRe: Kenyans Are Far Behind Nigerians In Every Aspect – Fani-Kayode by GeneralDae: 5:32pm On Feb 17, 2024
vaxx:
Defaulting issues has to do with the depreciation of the local currency against the dollar and that is linked to the country's high indebtedness. Same issues with Nigeria.

You see , Ghana was owing big , hence, the international capital market was closed to the government, the country didn't have foreign exchange to keep the exchange rate low. This caused in high inflation back then Ghana. We have no option than to join the imf again.

That is the only prudent means for a long time solution, we already enter into gold for oil swap deal with UAE, the imf suggest we abolished the practice

Most developed countries debt doubled and even tripled but due to the external factors like the covid 19 and Russia/ukraine war but they did not have the level of inflation Ghana had so they didn't default paying up their debt . Country that trapped into the mess also end up defaulting, zambia and ethiopia care case study . So Nigeria case might not be exceptional , your debt has doubled up , your inflation has step up further . Infact the scenario is just similar like Ghana.

Nigeria actually need imf support
But IMF recently expressed confidence in Nigeria's ability to pay her debts.

The activities of governments after the disbursement of money by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) contributed to the depreciation of the naira, according to data and interviews with people familiar with the matter.

BusinessDay learnt that portions of the funds from FAAC were often changed to dollars by some governments at the parallel market, putting more pressure on the naira.

An analysis shows that from July 2023 to January 2024, the naira depreciated in six months immediately in the black market after the FAAC shared money to the federal, state and local governments.

“With the removal of fuel subsidy, more volumes of naira are being shared by the federal, state and local governments and some of these monies are changed to dollars at the parallel market,” Jude Idimogu, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said in an interview with BusinessDay.

“A week to when they want to share money, note the price of the dollar at that time and after collection, you will see that it will increase because they would have more naira and they would use it to buy dollars. We Nigerians are not helping the system,” he added.

The liberalisation of the foreign exchange market by the Central Bank of Nigeria since last June has led to a large depreciation of the naira, which has also increased revenue for Africa’s biggest economy.

Experts say there is a strong correlation between the depreciation of the naira and demand for dollars after FAAC disbursements.

“There is a correlation between the release of FAAC allocation and the depreciation in the exchange rate, especially in the parallel market. That is why we need to be very cautious about this rate unification theory,” Muda Yusuf, chief executive officer of the Centre for Promotion of Private Enterprises (CPPE), said.

Don't you think the increased allocations to state Governors may be largely responsible?

There is too much naira in the system held by state Governors and other politicians and some of it probably finds their way in bulk to the parallel market.

So no matter the rate, these guys can buy to save for politics and other things. This is what I suspect.

Naira supply in the economy is huge chasing same amount of dollars as before or even slightly fewer. This is why I don't know what Cardoso can do at the moment.

Well said unfortunately Emilokan is behaving as if the presidency fell on him in error. People are getting more agitated by the second and they won't be patient with him for even one month because of the biting inflation at the moment.
Well I don't know what they can do about the naira again for now except they monitor the increased allocations to Governors since fuel subsidy removal to see if they find their way to the parallel market for exchange of dollars.

But even that is the job of the media and EFCC to investigate. Who or what can save the naira at this rate? I simply don't know.

I warned against floating the naira even when Buhari was president because I know that while floating was good, there are structural issues and foreign investors wouldn't just rush in immediately because you floated.

People just propose these liberal policies without looking at the issues in totality.

So yeah you are right. Tinubu should take some of the blame for the fast decisions but slow planning.

Honestly it beats me that we're still doing d**k measuring contests on top the same time wahala we're in. I would think Ghanaians would be more humble considering how their country's government have been defaulting on bond payments. Nigeria as bad as we currently are we pay our debts.
I swear. They seem to think their Government performed some kind of magic in 2022 to stop their currency slide then.

It was simply because they pushed forward most of their interest payments on debts as recommended by IMF which gave the Govt some breathing space and indeed the currency. IMF package also gives investors confidence normally to buy more of that local currency and bring in the dollars.

Nigeria can raise Eurobinds today at once and dollars would flood the market but this is like postponing the problem into the distant future and incurring more foreign currency denominated debts for the future.

What Nigeria would do is sell assets of NNPC, sell some electricity assets. sell the refineries and these talks are ongoing but are medium term solutions not short term solutions.

We need some short term solutions aside Eurobonds.

Nigeria would also need to do something about crypto because 56 Billion dollars from Nigeria went into crypto in 2022. We need to integrate crypto somehow.

Finally BDC's have to be reduced to only a few licensed ones at the airports. Naira cards should become fully functional for FX but with limits.

I understand you will fall back to population .
But of course, should I show you the social programs in Borno, Lagos, and Kaduna by state Governors which I know of? You won't hear of it because the media and Nigeria only care about what the Federal Government does for the most part.

The Federal Government have their own social packages since the 1970's but they are failing at most of them now partly because of corruption and partly because we are now around 200 million people. So comparing Ghana with Nigeria on social welfarism is rubbish. We don't practice thesame system of Government.

You are just 30 million people around the size of Lagos,Borno, and Kaduna put together. Many inhabitants of these states are also under some form of social support by their state Governors.

If only Nigerians could do what the Kenyans did. Ruto did exactly the same things Tinubu did, removed subsidies, increased taxes, etc.
But Kenyans took to the street every Wednesday until Ruto caved in.
Kenyan currency bounced back because they issued a Eurobond (to be due 2031) to offset their 2 Billion dollars debt that was to be paid in June in order to avoid default. This brought confidence to the market and things would definitely calm down from now on there.

Nigeria can issue Eurobonds too but this is not the right time because of relatively high U.S interest rates.

Nigerian CBN have not pumped in the normal dollars it pumps into the market everyday in the time of Emiefele/Buhari and haven't even pumped in anything at all since September until last week where they released a paltry 86 million dollars which was like a drop in the ocean. The demand is high. If you put dollars at 2000 naira today, many Nigerians would still afford it and are ready to pay.

The Dollar is not the problem but reliance on foreign currencies for imports
Well there's reliance on foreign currency for imports because most countries want to export in dollars to grow their reserves. Even Nigeria wants to export oil and cocoa in dollars.
All countries want dollars because they want to boost their reserves with it.
They want to boost their reserves with it because it is a stable and strong currency.

A lot of you just talk without even reading up on things. Why are we so confident with spouting information when we do not have an understanding of it? Almost all countries have “exempt surplus” (“ES”) when it comes to funds repatriation to parent companies. Even some have extra level of taxes to discourage you moving such funds and keeping it local.

The only qualms I would have with this new CBN guidelines is the inconsistencies it creates in the markets. Businesses love stabilities in rules and regulations especially when it comes to finances. Cashflow is a big deal and lots do have multi year projects that such funds finance. To have such changed in such a short time the rules is just the only issue.
They say desperate times calls for desperate measures. CBN is looking for dollars everywhere to support the naira.

It's just like I evaluated Esther Okoronkwo from that friendly tournament in 2021 (where they all played). Yes. Normally, govt should eradicate BDC. Those guys are the ones operating the black market and they work with banks. Govt is not serious. When they are, they will make commercial banks and some big players the only entity to exchange dollars...not those principalities called "bureau de change".

The real corruption is in banks. If banks can make maira scarce by not loading their ATMs aagainand using POS via money exchangers in the streets, then, they can do it to dollars too.

Govt knows what to do, but is not ready.

Just imagine the amount of money Wigwe the guy who died in a chopper crash accumulated. Look at his mansion. Lol. Cecilia Ibru did so many bad things in her bank in those days.
Erastus Agbola too destroyed so much. These bankers and major players like ex-Gen Danjuma, Dangote, Otedola, Adenuja, and many other billionaires are the reasons we are suffering. Na corruption.

They know what to do, but won't do it.

Naira is gonna crash further. And my prediction is that Bola Tinubu will be booted out of that seat soon. He will soon be disgraced if he doesn't sit tight.
Time to remove the BDC's. License only few of them to stay close to Airports (even these ones should get their dollars from CBN directly). Make Bank cards work and just put limits monthly.
