PoliticsRe: My Police Story - Worth Reading by Gentlebabs(op): 9:46am On Oct 29, 2017
DrGoodman:
My own case is different grin

The first real slap I received as a small boy of 13 years was from a Nigerian policeman. He nearly slapped out my jaw for jumping out of a moving but when I forgot something at home. What a way to correct a child.

Then policemen arrested me with my cassette which I just bought as a teen. They extorted me and took money from me which made me sour for months.

Policemen so much tormented me while driving my first old jalopy vehicle as they claimed the documents are bad. I had to sell the car after several months of harassment and extortion.

Can I start counting the millions of illegal arrests, the illegal detentions, torture and killing of innocent civilians. Bribery now has a face, it's the face of a black and black wearing policeman on the road.

I pay for my security, employ guards for my house and street, and you still want me to pay school fees for policemen who only looks to extort money from me?

You are not serious.
Their constant exposure to the Civil Populace by nature of their assignment has made them become less appreciated by many of us. I have had my fair share of Police extortion too, but i went back to understand why, which made me a better Citizen. I am not saying they are perfect, just asking us to look beyond their Uniforms. The Force Headquarters are not unaware of all these abuse of power and priviledge, that is why their is a reporting line with email and telephone contacts. Just imagine if the Police have to go on strike for just one week.?
PoliticsMy Police Story - Worth Reading by Gentlebabs(op):
For the love of NPF, I share this because Police is my friend.

Last week Sunday (22/10/17) on my way to Church, as we approached the toll Nigeria towards the Airport, we saw a vehicle that was about to be towed. Looking further, we realised the Occupants of the vehicle unknowingly took "One Way", which is dangerous and a serious offence in Lagos especially. I asked to get down from the vehicle, approached the peope to get a vivid picture of what happened, the OC that apprehended them. I moved straight to the Officer-In-Charge, introduced myself as A FRIEND OF THE POLICE, proved my claim to them them for clarity. You will not believe what happened, the Office-In-Charge just asked the OC that apprehended the Car to return the keys and allow them go. Oh! I felt like huggimg them all for granting me that honour.

Now, the lesson is, i realised that Police Officers are first human beings like you and i. They are parents and have responsibilities first to their family then us. While we are in the cossyness of our beds, travelling to Disneyland, Paris and all the beautiful cities of the world in our dreamworld, they are out their prorecting us in the cold. Just imagine if the Police have to go on strike for just one week! Have we ever voluntarily shown them appreciation, support and encouragement even in monetary terms for coffee or pure water?

Police officers have a right to stop you and proceed with searching on the grounds of reasonable suspicion, afterall, advanced criminals are usually well clad to deceive suspecting officers. I am very grateful to Inspector Olabisi Oduroye of the Railway Police Command (Bravo) et al, for helping me unlearn what i have learnt to better understand thw psychology of our Police Officers. It ia not enough to be Educationally intelligent, younhavr to also be street smart and drop your pride when you see Police Officers, they are the reason you and i can go to bed and sleep soundly. They are the reason we can allow our children travel far and wide, with the believe that the roads will be well manned by these Gallant Officers.

When a Police Officer approaches you, smile, listen to them and co-operate, afterall they are not witches or wizards. They probably have information to clear the place of criminals and vandals, they have information you are not privy to because it is on a "NEED TO KNOW" Basis. When you get stopped, please stop, so that what happened in 1932 will not repeat itself. Don't start with "Do you know who i am", expect the place you are going to is not time-bound. Consider starting with "Good morning Officer, How is your family? Thank you for the good job you guys are doing". If eventually they ask you to follow them to their Station, please do, and call your Lawyer in their presence, using only friendly and courteous tonality. Please note, not all Police Officers are corrupt as you think because it is not all the Prophets in Egypt that has bowed to Baal. Do you know that the NPF is not the most corrupt Government Para-Military ARM in Nigeria, if you are to judge by bribe? Have you ever considered how much bribe some enemies of state pay to bring in fake drugs, expired food items, illegal arms, injurious Turkeys and Chickens. They say corruption has been enshrined in our fabric as Nigerians. Do you know that if you are supposed to be at am agreed place for 9am and you get there by 9.10am you are corrupt? Before you label the NPF as the most corrupt, think about the above.

This week, please show some love. When you approach a Police Checkpoint, stop before you are stopped, walk up to them, smile, appreciate them with kind words and from your wallet, yes vokuntarily from your WALLET, they are really doing a good job. How do you feel when your Boss gives you some huge amount or gift to appreciate you, or when your children gifts you as their Hero or Heroine. Go to that supermarket, get provisions, stop by and give it to that Traffic Officer you have been helping to get you home on time. Buy a phone, give it to a Police Man, pay for their children's school fees as an act of appreciation.

There is a role to play in our multi-ethnic society with over 250 languages to make our Police a better Force, and by extension our society.

Don't forget to share your Police Story with me. I appreciate you foe finding time to read this post. Again, deep appreciation to Officers of the Airport Police Command for taking time to further making us understand the need to do and drive right always. For their understanding and being that part of the Police exhibiting the Change Begins With Me mantra, thank you.

EducationLet's Raise Tributes To Our Teachers - Happy Teachers' Day by Gentlebabs(op): 8:18am On Oct 05, 2017

EducationMy Childhood - A Reminiscence (tribute To Teachers) by Gentlebabs(op): 7:49am On Oct 05, 2017
I loved my childhood, growing up. We played "Tente", "Suwe", "Pilolo Pilolo", "Ta lo wa nu ogba yen", "Willy Willy don come", "Who Is In The Garden", "Pito Pitopito Pito".

We did cultural dances, ran the streets with pants, went to school in our prideful torn knickers. Watched Cartoons like Voltron, Teddy Bear, Sese Mystery, Abija, Tales by Moonlight, Behind The Cloud. Ate Baba dudu, Ekano Gowon, Lolly Pop. We sang songs like "Ise Agbe ni ise ile wa", "Ise beere, lo ni Monday eyin egbe wa eje ka mura", "Eko dara pupo", "Omo mi seun rere".

We listened to songs that heloed shaped our career like "Omo mi seun rere, ti a dara oh", IK Dairo. We were forced to listen to Apala, Oliver d'Coque, Bright Chimezie, Raki Mono, Majek Fashek, Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, "What Am I Gonna Do, To Befriend My Landlady". We listened to songs that were void of the lewd lyrics as seen and heard in musical videos.

We ate in all our neighbours houses, there were no big walls and fences. We were flogged by our neighbours if we went wrong. We did Daddy and Mummy's play, flew our Kites high, played Table Soccer.

Growing up was fun, i think this indomie generation missed out in this, as for most parents, it is all about school, lessons, home work, and the cycle continues. How can their cognitive values be fully developed by this?

On this world Teachers' day, i specially thank my Central Primary School, Featac teachers' Mrs. Jeje, Mrs. Muo, Mr. Oyefeso (Headmaster). In Festac Grammar School, i am grateful to the "Kpankere of Messrs Lee, Akomas, Okeke. Mrs. Bajulaiye (Principal), Mrs. Cambell (Vice Principal) who asked Joy Maduka to return the slap i gave her in 1996 (I learnt NEVER to raise my hand on a lady since then). Mrs. Makanjuola et al.

To all those shrewd and astute Professors who helped me navigate the storms of life, from the beutifully structured learning environment of Obafemi Awolowo University, to my soujourn to the University of first choice (Unilag), thank you for showing me that education is a vital key to liberation.

Professors Ojikutu, Mojekwu, Oyebade et al. I am very grateful for helping me become a better Teacher. By the grace of God, i will not dissapoint you all.

Thank you all for touching my life in beautiful ways. To my parents of blessed memory, you are officially the best parents in the whole world.

BusinessMy Take On Pension Reforms To Exclude Customs, Police, Immigration, Prisons And by Gentlebabs(op): 8:10am On Sep 24, 2017
Deliberately, i have been silent until now on the above subject matter. Today, i have decided to come out of my shell to air my view accordinglly.

The proposed amendment to exclude the above sets will further increase pension liabilities and take them back to the Defined Benefits Scheme where pension was budget based.

Secondly, it will increase the avenues of diversion of such funds as was witnessed in the past under the Defined Benefit Scheme

Thirdly, the DBS is not sustainable as it is not contributory and to a large extent budget based. If they do not pass budget, it becomes challenging to pay pensions.

Fourthly, retirees will be expected to attend continous verification exercise, which can be rigorous and further expose them to health risks.

Fifthly, the waiting period will increase as it is seen now that all Federal retirees that retired from November 2016 to date are still yet to be paid.

In addition, the bill to amend the law for retirees to have access to up to 75% of their terminal benefits will subject their future to a life of risks and uncertainty. For example, if a retiree's total benefit is #10,000,000, he gets #7,500,000 as lump sum, he will then be getting between #20,000 and #27,000 monthly. Meanwhile, this person would have been receiving between #100,000 and #150,000 monthly before retirement. How will such people cope
Already, th NPF PFA is doing a great job in managing her officers and men, others can take a cue from this.

Still on the above, i agree that some people can actually manage their funds themselves, but do you think that percentage is up to 70%?

Pension and retirement is a serious matter. I imploy all the stakeholders to proceed with caution, consider the submissions of these stakeholders and take a decision that will not ricochet in the long run.

Absolute dependency on Government for pension and retirement is a risk you do not really want to take hencei do not align with those beating the drums of exemption.

Finally, may i also use this platform plead with the government to build modern RETIREMENT HOMES, as is obtainable in advanced countries to cater for the needs of our Senior Citizens. Having paid their dues serving meritoriously for years, we cannot but care for them.

I might be a little "Old-schooish", but i think the green light approach by ladies still remains a preferred option, to protect the dignity of both sexies, especially the lady. However, when a Lady swallows her pride to ask you out, be nice because boldness is a very strong virtue some matured men don't even possess.

Finally, ladies like companionship, that they asked you out does not really mean they want you in-between their legs, at least not immediately. That is why it is called a "Private Part."

It was 2.59pm, Central African Time, retreating from the hussling & bustling of Lagos, exhausted & hungry, i heard a voice behind me, "Uncle, I have been looking for you, please will you be my Mentor?", the voice was Ibrahims'. Intrigued by his sincerity and gentility, i turned gave him a big hug and said "i pray i don't dissapoint you as we embark on this life journey."

You see, it is not until you go to church 7 days a week or observe the 5 prayers as a Muslim, are you leaving a live worthy of emulation? Does your persona command a kind of followership that helps to inspire and bring out the best in people that come accross you? How long will you continue to live for self? It is time to give back to the society, raise a new generation of youths that will impact our world positively.

Adopt and mentor a child today, we can do it one child at a time, then see the full joy of accomplishment at maturity. In the end it will not be the years in your life that will count, but the life in your years.

Thank you Ibrahim for deeming me worthy of your mentorship and may God bless our union.
