LAGOS—A Somolu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has sentenced one Adeleke Ajayi to seven years imprisonment with hard labour for parading himself as an official of Goge Africa Foundation.

Ajayi, 34, docked on a four-count charge, was accused of conspiring with others now at large, to defraud unsuspecting members of the public by presenting himself as an Goge Africa Foundation official.

The prosecutor, Akinlabi Adegoke, said Ajayi had defrauded students of three private schools in Lagos by asking them to contribute N300 each as registration fee for a programme to be organised by Goge Africa Foundation.

According to Adegoke, Ajayi conspired with others now at large to collect participation fee from unsuspecting students of some schools, though the programme was for free.

Adegoke said Ajayi collected N74,000 from the students under the guise of facilitating their participation in the programme, adding that Ajayi printed posters for the programme without authorisation from Goge Africa Foundation and circulated same.

Ogun State Independent Electoral Committee (OGSIEC) has announced the disqualification of six candidates contesting councillorship positions in the forthcoming local government election in the state. The Chairman of the screening committee of the electoral body, Mr Mutiu Agboke, who made the disclosure in Abeokuta, the state capital also lamented the caliber of aspirants vying for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the July 21 election.

Although Agboke failed to mention the names of the disqualified aspirants or their political parties, he, however, added that the aspirants were disqualified for allegedly presenting fake certificates during the screening exercise carried out by the OGSIEC.

He expressed deep concern and worry about the quality of aspirants vying for both chairmanship and councillorship positions his committee screened so far.

According to him, virtually all the political parties [/b]that had presented aspirants for the poll appeared not to have done their home work well, stressing that most of the candidates did not meet up to the standard.

Agboke recalled that during the screening, many aspirants for the chairmanship and councillorship positions could not give the [b]definition of "Democracy'' or be able to explain the roles of a chairman or a councilor in a local government.

His words: "Can you imagine the quality of candidates presented for the election, how can someone wishing to direct the affairs of a local government not be able to define what democracy is all about, saying it is a game of number.

"Things are as bad as that; not to even talk of the aspirants for the councillorship positions that have been screened so far."

He disclosed that those disqualified tendered fake Secondary School Certificates before the screening committee, adding that they had also pleaded with the committee not to probe them further.

Agboke said the commission had resolved to give all parties contesting, a level playing field but would not condone any form of irregularities from any quarters

THE merger plan among opposition political parties has taken a new dimension with reports that leaders of the opposition are already taking their case to some leading members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.

Reliable findings within the opposition movement showed that nocturnal contacts have been made with the political camp of former military president, Ibrahim Babangida who had announced his retirement from partisan politics.

Also reportedly contacted was the political camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar whom the opposition leaders allegedly believed has been plotted against going by the recent election of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as the national chairman of the ruling party.

While it was not clear whether Atiku Abubakar has been directly approached, Sunday Tribune was told that some opposition leaders had for some time been working on resolving the personality clash between Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar as a prelude for getting the former vice president into the coalition.

The former vice president was however said to be uninterested in joining any anti-PDP coalition even as it was learnt that a level of success was recorded in the reconciliation efforts.

Insiders within the camp of the former vice president said the Adamawa politician was still hopeful of making headway within the PDP even as many of his key allies are said to be warning against Turaki`s laying his hope on the PDP in 2015.

“There is a division within the house. Many want Turaki to abandon the ship and join the grand coalition. Others urged him to retain his trust and support for president Goodluck Jonathan,” a close confidant of the politician said.

Further investigations however revealed that the former number two citizen still believed that the emergence of Tukur as party chairman had nothing to do with his aspiration even as many of his supporters are clamoring for a run into the emerging grand coalition.

Spokesman of Atiku Campaign Organization, Mallam Garba Sheu when contacted told Sunday Tribune that the former Vice President remained a bonafide, loyal member of the PDP, adding “we remain in PDP.”

The situation within the Babangida camp is however slightly different especially as the former leader has officially announced exit from politicking unlike vice president Abubakar who is still active in the field.

As at the last count, more than three bigwigs of the Babangida camp have crossed into the ACN especially in the southern part of the country. This is in addition to the spokesman of the Minna General, Kashim Afegbua who is now in the frontline of campaign for the re-election of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

It was however gathered that despite the recent defections, the former leader has not directed his loyalists to join the emerging coalition.

Sources within the opposition however reconfirmed that contacts have been made with the Babangida group and that some strategic networking is ongoing as the coalition talks progress.

“We have contacted the General and we are having progress. We are reaching out to all well meaning Nigerians,” a CPC leader from Enugu state confided in the Sunday Tribune.

APGA splits over merger
While the merger leaders are reaching out to some leaders of the PDP, fresh reports are emerging of a rift within the All Progressive Grand Alliance on the proposed merger of leading opposition parties against the ruling party in 2015.

The South East caucus of the party heavily influenced by the Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, is said to be opposed to the anti-PDP coalition while the northern wing of the party is said to be favorably disposed to the coalition.

It was learnt that party leaders within the South East saw APGA as an Igbo political party with network support provided for it by the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, a position being disputed by the northern wing of the party.

Igbo wing of the party was said to have insisted on a silent agreement between South East and South South leaders which led to massive support for president Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 poll and which many are hoping to repeat in the 2015 polls.

Leaders of both ACN and CPC in the South East are however said to be working hard to convince their brothers within APGA to join the alliance, an effort that has so far yielded no result.

The failure of the effort was reported to have led to an emerging division within the party which saw the northern wing of the party led by the party`s National Secretary, Sani Shinkafi to publicly announce the decision of the 19 northern states to join the merger even without waiting for a decision of the party`s national executive committee.

Meanwhile, the All Nigerian Peoples Party has urged a low profile approach to the ongoing merger talk among the opposition political parties for the effort to achieve desired results.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Emma Enekwu who spoke with Sunday Tribune over the issue noted that the party does not believe any noise should be made about the merger talk especially in view of past experiences in alliance talk among opposition parties.

“We are not opposed to the merger talks but we are not given to so much noise being made about it, he said.

“Merger is not a child’s play,” he said, adding that “a lot of work still needs to be done if we are to achieve success on this project.”
It would be recalled that ANPP had in the past entered into a government of national unity agreement with the ruling party ,a development that forced the national leader of the Congress for Progressive Change, Muhammad Buhari to quit the party.

Fresh crisis hits merger plans

FRESH crisis appears to be brewing within the ranks of the Congress for Progressive Change(CPC) as key allies of its founder and presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari have opposed what they termed unilateral actions being taken by the leader so far.

The development is already constituting a huge threat to the planned merger between the CPC and Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN) ahead of the 2015 general election.

Buhari was said to have personally resolved to take over the negotiation with the ACN recently, following the perception of negative roles said to have been played by his trusted allies ahead of the 2011 election.

Some of those who considered themselves as core Buhari loyalists were said to have, through their conducts, worked for the defeat of the party by unilaterally changing lists of candidates close to the election proper.

Buhari was said to have felt disappointed by the conduct of some of those close to him as insinuations were also out there that he was being controlled by his key aides.

The General had, as part of his resolve to personally negotiate the merger with ACN, visited the party’s leader, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu about two months ago. Tinubu also recently visited Buhari in Kaduna alongside his party chiefs.

Sources close to the party however confirmed that many of the top party leaders have expressed frustration at Buhari’s decision to sideline the party machinery in the merger plans and some of them were of the view that Buhari might, one day, defect to the ACN without telling them.

At a meeting held last week by chieftains of the party at the Abuja Sheraton Hotels, the frustrations of CPC chiefs became pronounced with a source confirming that the National Chairman, Prince Tony Momoh told the meeting that if Buhari’s disregard for the party continues, he might be forced to resign. Seven top members were said to have attended the meeting. While some of them agreed with the expression of frustration by Momoh, others however calmed the chairman, saying that Buhari will never join ACN.

Sources at the meeting told the Sunday Tribune that most of those at the meeting however expressed disappointment with the way Buhari was said to be running the affairs of the CPC by taking unilateral decisions.

According to sources, one of the instance of the perceived unilateral decision by Buhari was the decision to host Tinubu and others in Kaduna without intimating the party.

A source said that the National Chairman was shocked to meet Tinubu and others at Buhari’s house in Kaduna as he (Momoh) was only there to keep a scheduled appointment.

“The National Chairman only went to Kaduna to keep a date with Buhari over some outstanding discussions and he was shocked that the date coincided with the same date he (Buhari) was to host Ahmed Bola Tinubu over the merger talks.The meeting was never known to Momoh until he went to honour the date with the General,” a source said.

“The CPC as a party is being sidelined in most of the activities that happened during the meeting between the CPC and the ACN representatives. Even though the chairman participated in the meeting in Kaduna, he was not really informed that the CPC/ACN merger talks was going to hold,” another source stated.

There are fears that the way things are going, Buhari might just one day decide to join the ACN and abandon some of them in the CPC as an empty shell.

Another member of the party’s top hierarchy who spoke at the meeting in Sheraton, Abuja said that they have warned Buhari about Tinubu and that the General does not know Tinubu very well.

“We believe that Tinubu is only fraternising with Buhari for his own personal political interests, adding that once Tinubu is aware that he cannot get anything out of the planned political alliance/merger between the CPC and the A CN, he (Tinubu ) will abandon Buhari,” a party leader was also quoted as saying, adding that he has been getting details of interactions between Buhari and Tinubu in recent times.

It was however gathered that the CPC leaders had resolved at the meeting to call a show down meeting with Buhari where they would get across to him some prevailing circumstances and why the planned merger with the ACN may not be in the interest of the CPC.

POLICEMEN yesterday stood guard over the Secretariat of the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) along Abiola Way, Abeokuta, following a hint that some aggrieved members of the party planned to seize it on grounds of alleged imposition of candidates by Governor Ibikunle Amosun in the forthcoming local council polls.

On Tuesday, some aggrieved party faithful protested at the GRA, Abeokuta home of the ACN Leader in the state, Olusegun Osoba, where they called on Osoba to intervene in the matter.

The protesters wanted to continue the action yesterday at the party’s secretariat but armed policemen took over the secretariat before they arrived there.

Nonetheless, the protesters who kept some distance away from the armed policemen vent their anger through songs and the anti-Amosun placards they wielded.

State Chairman, ACN, Tajudeen Bello had earlier at a stakeholders meeting said the candidates were selected following a rigorous exercise conducted by a consultant who went round the 20 local councils in the state.

Two brothers arrested for mass forgery of vehicle papers

T[b]wo brothers, Oriyomi Odutagbe, 41, and Yinka Odutagbe, 2[/b]0, are in police custody for alleged forgery.

The brothers were arrested recently by officers attached to the X Squad Unit of the Lagos State Police Command following a tip off.
The officers raided the office of the suspects at the PWD Bus Stop where they recovered fake vehicle licencing documents and other equipment used by the suspects to print and sell fake documents to unsuspecting members of the public.
The fake documents recovered from the suspects included 364 pieces of forged Federal Government vehicle proof of ownership certificate, 88 pieces of Lagos State licencing payment card, also known as autoreg, 27 pieces of Federal Government of Nigeria Certificate of Road Worthiness.
Others included 200 pieces of Ogun State vehicle licence, 400 pieces of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja vehicle licence, 100 pieces of Ogun state Road Traffic Regulation Hackney Carriage Licence and one Lagos State Ministry of Transport seal.
The suspects blamed their involvement in crime on poverty.
Oriyomi said: "I used to print signage for people but the business was not lucrative and I could not fend for myself.
"So one day I met a guy called Adamu.
"He was the one who introduced me to the business of making fake documents.
"I used to hang around the Shogunle Vehicle Licencing Office where I call out to people that are coming to do documents to patronise me.
"I usually tell them I can help them get the document faster and cheaper so they will trust me and then I will get the fake document for them."
Oriyomi also added that he was able to get patronage as his documents were faster in being processed than those from the licencing office.
He said: "You know people do not want to wait and they do not want to pay expensive for the documents.
"So I will persuade them to patronise me with the cheap fee.
"For example, the autoreg is worth like N1,500.
"But we can sell the fake ones for N200.
"We usually sell our fake document between the range of N200 and N250 as the case may be whereas the official amount can be as much as N1,500."
When asked if he knew anything about the fake documents, Yinka, stated: "I just finished secondary school and I am trying to get money for my tertiary institution when my elder brother told me to assist him with his business.
"I never know it was an illegal business.
"I have just worked with him for like three weeks before I was arrested."
Sadly, the brothers do not know the gravity of their crime as they stated when asked if they knew that they were in trouble with the law.
Oriyomi said: "We are with the police and I thought when they are free they will let us go to our house.
"Now you are saying we are going to be taken to Kirikiri Prison.
"I do not know that the police can send us to jail."
One of the officers who requested anonymity said the suspect would be charged to court after a thorough investigation.
The officer said: "It is not easy to track this level of forgery.
"We are looking for other members of the gang and they will be arrested soon and charged to court."
