Is there any evidence that the leaders in the N and SW are better than the leaders in the SE? Or are you guys comparing the Gov of Enugu with that of Imo (Igbo vs Igbo)?

If we had strong, forward-looking and effective leadership at the federal level, that would have served as a motivation for the states to do better.

The North and its people are so backwards and averse to changing times that a simple matter of modernizing their cattle farming business like everyone else the world over has done is a big issue for them.

Due to their stone-age reasoning, a simple medical matter as taking polio vaccines results in death of innocent sick people, hence the North of Nigeria holds the highest polio burden in the world.

How can a people who cannot modernize something as simple as cattle farming lead Nigeria in this technology-driven times?

What will the North do differently in 2015 if they get the leadership?

Oh I forgot, Cross River State is no longer an O-PS; so we will be having 12, rather than 13, O-PSs.

Despite the refinery and some of the oil deposits being in Anambra state, any oil extracted from Kogi land or from Enugu state should be credited to those states. This means we will have 13 oil-producing states soon, whereby each state is rewarded according to their oil output

This is what goes on in Abia and Imo and Ondo and Edo where oil piped from those places are taken to Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa for processing or export.

Anambra should intensify efforts to find more oil wells in areas that has no boundary disputes

I am sure Anambra and Enugu will be sitting on even more oil deposits

Before more harm is done (such as by Boko Haram-type bombing and destruction) I suggest that Anambra (Orient petroleum Limited) should relocate its oil tank farms built in rented Kogi soil to Anambra soil. Igbos never learn.

There are strong indications that the over the ownership of an oil well involving Anambra, Kogi and Enugu states, would be decided by the National Boundary Commission in November, 2012.

It was authoritatively gathered in Abuja on Friday that the Federal Government was weighing a political solution to the dispute.

Already, Kogi State Government has written to the Federal Government soliciting its intervention.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Kogi State Governor, Mr. Jacob Edi, who confirmed this, told Sunday Punch that the state government had written President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Boundary Commission chaired by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, over the ownership of the oil well.

Edi said, "The Kogi State Government has made representations to the National Boundary Commission, which is the only body recognised by the Constitution to adjudicate on a matter of this nature. We have confidence in the NBC.

"The letter to the NBC is a renewal, since the state government had earlier done so sometime in March, both to the President and the Vice-President who is chairman of the commission."

President Goodluck Jonathan's declaration of Anambra as the 10th oil producing state last month during the inauguration of the first oil company in the state, triggered ownership counter claims from Kogi and Enugu states.

But to ease tension in border communities where the oil well is located, the NBC had written to the states involved in the dispute to maintain the status quo, as it prepared to mobilize to the site with the surveyor-generals of the three states, their land bureau officials, as well as their traditional rulers.

Investigations at the commission revealed that interstate boundaries department was working on a proposal that would resolve the ownership tussle.

Our correspondent who visited the agency on Friday gathered that, "The commission would go to the site with the administrative map of Nigeria drawn by the Surveyor-General of the Federation, GPS (Global Position System equipment), which would be fed with coordinates that may help to end the controversy of ownership of the oil well between states.

"The inter-state boundaries department is working on a proposal, which would be submitted to the DG of the commission soon. The NBC has also written to the states to maintain the status quo pending the resolution of the tussle; by first week of November, all the contending parties would be mobilized to the site where the GPS and other instruments would be used to determine the owner of the oil well."

On why the Commission holds the ace in resolving the impasse, a Presidency official said it would be a waste of time and resources for any state to head for the court as such cases in the past were referred to the NBC for advice.

"Bayelsa and Rivers states went to court over a boundary dispute, but they were referred to NBC," he stated.

On the controversy, the Chairman of Orient Petroleum Resources Limited, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, said the dispute was unnecessary.

"The map of Nigeria squarely places the oil well as at today in Anambra State," he said.

Anyaoku, a former Commonwealth Secretary-General, however, said the company was also working on oil wells found in Kogi State, which it would begin to drill once the well matures.

According to him, ownership of oil wells has long been settled between the company and the communities in Enugu, Kogi and Anambra where it is prospecting for oil.

He explained that the company's licence covers prospecting for oil in Anambra, Kogi, Enugu, Delta and Edo states.

But Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Chukwudi Achife, told one of our correspondents that, "It's easy to resolve the matter, since the oil wells are situated in certain communities which fall into specific states.

"In the case of Enugu, the oil fields are in Iggar and Ojjor communities in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, unless anyone can prove that those communities are in any other states."

He claimed that Orient Petroleum had held talks with the Enugu State Government over the oil wells in those communities.

Our correspondent gathered that the dispute may, however, linger if the states spurned an NBC solution to the dispute.

Sambo, who chairs the commission, it was learnt, may persuade the feuding states to treat the oil well as 'a joint resource'.

Boundary disputes between the three states had earlier been defined on the administrative map, but the discovery of oil aggravated it, it was also gathered.

Earlier, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State had disclosed that his administration had invested over N4bn in the venture and that the oil field is rightly located in Anambra State.

He had said, "Under my government, with the vision and belief of positive impact of the project on the economy of the state and country, we invested N4.4bn in the project, which bolstered the confidence of other investors to invest in the venture that made the commissioning a reality.

"It is pertinent to note that, till date, neither the groups nor states laying claims to the oil fields have directly or indirectly invested a kobo in the project, while Anambra State has invested several billions."

But his Kogi State counterpart, Idris Wada, fired back, stressing, "make no mistakes about it; the oil in question belongs to Kogi. For purposes of emphasis, the oil is found in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State."

A former Appeal Court Judge, Justice Mamman Nasir had headed a National Boundary Adjustment Commission in 1976, which tried to address states boundary disputes in the country.

Kano – Kano State Government has sponsored 25 indigenes of the state to study Marine Engineering in India and the United States.

A statement issued in Kano on Saturday by Alhaji Baba Dantiye, the Director of Press to Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso, said the four year course would cost the government $80 million annually.

According to the statement, Gov. Rabi’u Kwankwaso said this during the graduation of over 1,000 youths under the government’s youth empowerment programme, tagged “Lafiya Jari.”

It said that the governor emphasised on the resolve of the administration to give priority to human capital development.

“We are doing all this because we need to see our youth everywhere in the world and reduce unemployment facing the state”, the statement quoted the governor as saying.

It added that Kwankwaso further revealed that the government had concluded plans to sponsor 100 students to study avionics and another 100 to study medicine abroad.

The statement said that the state government, through the Col. Yakubu Bako (Rtd.) Youth Employment Committee had secured over 200 jobs for indigenes of the state in various Federal Government establishments.

The “Lafiya Jari”, is a healthcare based empowerment scheme under the state Entrepreneurship Institute.

The scheme provides drugs and financial support to students who graduated from the Schools of Health Technology to set up their own businesses. (NAN)

Nigeria’s big hope of saving face in track and field crashed after Joke Odumosu placed last in the 400m Hurdles final.

She followed the footsteps of Blessing Okagbare who gave so much hope in the heats but placed last in the 100m final following injury.

Joke was also sensational in the semifinal, setting a national record with a 54.40 seconds outing. She enjoyed good rating after the semi-final. But like Blessing, rather than improve on her semi final time she dropped, running 55.38 to place last.

Antyukh Natalilya of Russia won the gold in 52.70 while Demus Lashinda of USA earned the silver medal with 52.77 seconds. Hejnova Zuzana of Czech Republic was the bronze winner in 53.38.

17 Gunmen Arrested, 35 IEDs Recovered In Kogi


The Kogi State Police Command says it arrested 17 gunmen and recovered 35 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) as well as other arms and ammunition in Okene town of the state.

Parading the suspects arrested at various operations in Lokoja yesterday, the state police commissioner, Muhammed Musa Katsina, said the explosives were recovered from a vehicle of suspected armed robbers while attempting to raid a filling station in the area.

He said the suspects, who had been moving around in a Volkswagen Golf car with the IEDs, engaged the police in a shootout but the gang leader whose name was given as Lukman escaped with injury while two policemen were killed in the battle.

Muhammed said one of the suspects, Raimi Shaidu (aka Ken Ken), a popular shoemaker is now in police custody, saying the suspect masterminded several robbery operations in banks and police stations in the state. The man, according to the commissioner, confessed to have killed one Sergeant Yisa in Okene and took away his riffle in 2010.

He added that another suspect Abdullahi Kolawole from Ibadan, Oyo state killed two visiting Mobile Police Men at Okene.

The commissioner said the gang was also involved in manufacturing of explosives which they sell to various terrorist groups and armed robbers in some parts of the country.

He listed items recovered to include 16 anti tank locally made bombs (eight charged and eight uncharged) and seven units of power source,19 anti personnel locally made bombs, and Volkswagen Golf car with registration number Kano KMC 826 XA.

Others items are four units of AK 47 riffles, one Mark Four rifle, five automatic pump action rifles, 21 single barrel guns and three locally made pistols. They also include 1,501 rounds of AK 47 live ammunition, action pump guns and other dangerous weapons in addition to recovering 11 different cars, he said.

The commissioner also said 17 rounds of Markrov live ammunition, 23 rounds of brownie pistol ammunition, 17 rounds of Berretta ammunition, 3 rounds of Mark 4 ammunition, 53 cartridges, five expended and two locally made bullet proofs and charms were equally recovered.

What am saying is that if it were in those ''O'' states that Orji Kalu (Abia ex-Gov) and Orji (Abia current Gov) feuded the way they did, there would have been deaths recorded. The feud between Ohakim and Okorocha was also very intense as was the one between Obi and Uba. Yet no deaths were reported.

We South Easterners do not kill ourselves due to politics, unlike others (you know yourselves).
I remember Ayodeji Daramola, Bola Ige, Funso Williams, Abubakir Rimi and tens of other SW and Northern politicians killed by their opponents.
Like everyone else, we fight for elective positions, but for us it is not a do or die thing.
These two pictured below - Nigige and Obi- were serious political enemies in the past, but that is where it ends: past politics.
No one of them will send assassins to terminate the other's existence.

Septuagenarian beaten to death in Ekiti

Omuo-Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State is now tense following the alleged beating to death of a 70-year-old woman, Mrs Rebecca Adewumi, by a mob in the community on the allegation that she was a witch.

The mob that allegedly beat the woman to death was also alleged to have assaulted her niece, Mrs Anike Orojo, who was said to have made efforts to save the deceased from her attackers.

The family, in a letter of complaint to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Sotonye Wakama, signed by their counsel, Mr Dele Omotosho of Dele Omotosho and co. listed the names of people they claimed perpetrated the act.

The letter said the daughter of the deceased, Mrs Grace Funmilayo Smith, claimed that the accused people “subjected her late mother to serious beatings and inhuman treatment, stripped her naked in the open, forced her to drink a poisonous drug with which she used to treat a wound on her leg.”

The family said in the petition dated July 5, 2012, that the incident happened on Tuesday, June 26 at Obadore, Omuo-Ekiti.

The deceased’s ordeal was said to have started on May 9, 2012 when she was taken to the palace of the Olomuo of Omuo-Ekiti, Oba Noah Omonigbehin.

The state Commissioner of Police said in his reaction to the development that the police had got report about the incident and the petition by the family, adding that nobody had been arrested as at press time because no eyewitness to the alleged crime had come forward to identify any suspect.

Wakama said the police could not rely on the names listed by the lawyers in their petition because they were not at the scene of the alleged crime, saying though the corpse had been taken to a private hospital for autopsy, the police would not rely on that as the law said autopsy must be carried out by pathologists in a government hospital.

He said a member of the deceased’s family, who was said to have witnessed the incident, would make a statement upon which the police could base their arrest and subsequent action, and promised that justice would be done in the matter.
