Education / Re: Why I Wrote UTME Again, Unizik’s Best-graduating Student Reveals by Gerrard59(m): 8:39pm On May 03

Not a good route. People send their kids to Nigeria to study Medicine. If her parents or guardians can sponsor her in Medical School in Nigeria, it's still better for her. Going to America to study another course for three to four years before applying to go to Medical school is a total waste of time. She should just graduate in Nigeria and move to America as a Medical Doctor. All of us studied in Nigeria and graduated on time, even with the numerous ASUU strike. No stress!

Fair analysis. The parents better be well boxed up to finance writing USMLE.

I guess you've have not heard of ELDS ( educationally less developed states) or catchment areas. I have seen where a guy with JAMB score of less than 180 was given Medicine and surgery admission at ABU - Zaria. Are u aware that a Candidate from say Anambra or Enugu has a cut off mark of 130 to gain admission into unity schools ( Federal government colleges) while a candidate from kebbi or katsina requires just 4 marks for the same thing? That's quota system for you.

ELDS constitutes less than 30% in admission requirements. Merit has it at 45%. Catchment area comes next. The number of Anambra folks who chose Medicine to study at UNIZIK outnumber those from other SE states and neighbouring states like Delta and Kogi. Also, based on catchment areas, someone from C/River or Rivers has a higher chance of being admitted to study Medicine at UNIZIK than someone from Yobe. So, someone from Yobe can't gain admission to study Medicine at UNIZIK. It is Medicine and Igbos are notorious for scoring very high. Juilet is the one who has a greater chance of being admitted to study Medicine at ABU than the fellow from Yobe. As for Unity schools, catchment area does not apply.

As for the fellow who gained admission to ABU to study Medicine is their problem, but I am quite surprised at such folly and anomaly.

Do you know how much i costs to study Medicine abroad? Medical school in Nigeria is highly subsidised and also one of the best. That's why it's difficult to gain admission to study medicine in Nigeria. Our leaders know they cannot import doctors from other countries the way they import engineers. That's why they spend more on medicine than they do on a course like Engineering.

She has a first class in Chemistry. What she would have done is to write SAT, and score very high then apply to universities in the US that would admit her to study a life science course (scholarships are plentiful). Upon graduation, she can proceed to study to become a medical doctor. Taking a loan to study medicine in the US is a better option than studying it in Nigeria (ASUU + internal issues). If she now decides to later relocate to the US after her studies at UNIZIK, that makes her current decision even more foolish because she would spend a WHOLE LOT and have wasted years she would have used in acclimatising in the US.

Ignorant advisors. With that brain, she should have written SAT rather than JAMB and get into a good school in the US. Show them you graduated with a first class in Chemistry. They admit you to study Biology, ace it and go on to become a medical doctor with further studies in the only country where skilled black professionals earn more than anywhere else. First class in Chemistry is not common, unlike numerical sciences.

Competition wey person from Yobe with UTME score of 160 will be given medicine and surgery on merit list while someone with 300 from Anambra or IMO would not. Is that "competition" ?

No one from Yobe with a score of 160 would gain admission into UNIZIK. Even at that, I strongly doubt such a person would gain admission to study Medicine in any Northern university. She is not competing with people from Yobe to get into UNIZIK, except she wants to study in a Northern university, which not many Igbo females do compared to their male counterparts.

A PhD in biomedical sciences or medicinal chemistry could have been okay. Also, she could have done the JAMB writing when she was either a first year or second or even third year Chemistry student at UNIZIK. Her choice nevertheless.

BTW, what was her final CGPA as a first graduate?

many of you low life deluded women (who are side hookups but want to act as if you were the wife) allow some yeye h0rny deceitful man to use and abuse you because of Iphone 13 and upkeep, and think you are clever, while its the rich married ignoramus that is winning, not you. if you were ever worthy in his eyes, he would have done you right (aka divorce his wife and make a lifetime commitment towards you by MARRYING YOU

She is clearly not the bright type. The bright ones satisfy the man, earn a good income and while at it, get married to an ignorant young man AND keep the sugar daddy in the loop for side income and sex. The ones who don't get married early enough ensure the sugar daddy takes total care of their needs and sponsors their siblings in either education or business and if they wish to relocate, the sugar daddy funds the entire process. Those who decide not to relocate get dem daddies to purchase properties, cars and other investments in their own names. The ones who don't want to get married now retire as feminazis on TwitterNG where they abuse younger men who are working on themselves while recruiting younger girls on the side and pimping to wealthier men.

The OP is clearly not the bright type. As for telling his wife, that is even more foolish as no sane black African woman married to a wealthy man will let go of him simply because he cheated. In fact, she expects him to have fun with younger girls as she most likely instituted a sex timetable for the wealthy man, while she focuses on spending his money and taking care of the children.

The school is a great school and has been doing well in Cowbell competition etc but I think they have not gotten commensurate publicity. It's a private Christian school, operated by Peace House, a ministry led by Bro Gbile Akanni. They have opened a second campus in Abeokuta. The main campus is in Gboko, Benue State. As far as I know, the staff are not paid salaries but live by faith! They also don't have official school fees but parents/guardians pay as able and led, which is discussed and agreed with the school. They have high moral standards, mission focused and zero tolerance for immorality, indiscipline and exam malpractice. The teachers are passionate and pour their lives into the students as they are not primarily motivated by salary. They see their jobs as divine mandate to raise the children.

Thank you for your explanation. Unfortunately, quality education needs money, not just prayers. Loyola Jesuit and Covenant University are good examples. Either they seek funding from wealthy Christians or they institute an acceptable tuition fee, else they are at the risk of losing their talented teachers to competitors.

As expected, they aren't getting publicity because they aren't winning in any category in the Cowbell Mathematics Competition.

P.S. The winners in the Cowbell competition are disproportionately schools managed by churches. Man! Even an atheist has to accept the fact that Christianity is a force for good.

I never said China should not rise through the value chain. I just said it must do so fairly and naturally.

When I said naturally, it should allow the free market pick winners. Presently, the Chinese government goes over the top to chose winners.

The market always does a far better job in picking winners than the state. This is so globally and that is what leading economists advocate.

Again, that is not true. Over 70 EV companies are battling against each other in selling their cars at cheap prices. In fact, one of the reasons EVs have gotten so cheap in China is due to the fierce competition. So, how is the Chinese government picking winners? BYD and Co are wining because the enormous capital they have, not because they are favoured. In fact, I dare say none is favoured to be the top. Rather, consumers are encouraged with subsidies to buy EVs, so this spurs competition from the automakers.

I am curious, where are you getting your articles about the Chinese EV revolution from? I get mine from the Economist and Financial Times, but pay close attention to the commentary section of the latter as there are very insightful debates and comments about the industry by a largely Western audience who acknowledge the ingenuity of the Chinese, their efficiency and some of them even dispute the false claims of subsidies.

grandstar:

You also mention about China's dominance of eletric vehicles.

It's "dominance" in electric vehicles was achieved through excessive government subsidies. There's now a mountain of unsold electric cars from so many Chinese brands who just hopped into the scene because of the subsidies. There are just too many unsold vehicles.

Nevertheless, upon some very indepth study of electric vehicles, some kudos should be handed China. However, wanting to sell to other parts of the world heavily subsidized vehicles or unsellable lots is very questionable and its dumping in trade parlance.

https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/02/21/1068880/how-did-china-dominate-electric-cars-policy/

https://www.reuters.com/breakingviews/china-ev-overcapacity-fix-would-be-crowd-pleaser-2024-01-22/

The subsidies are given to consumers, not carmakers. So, the carmakers jostle for those consumers. The same subsidies were issued to Telsa itself and its buyers. In fact, one of the argument so-called Liberals in the US have against Elon Musk is that he rode on the back of government subsidies to EV dominance in the US. So, how is it different from China? When Tesla became the popular car in Norway, it was largely as a result of the waivers and subsidies the government there gave to consumers who purchase EVs. So, why is China's own different?

Nothing wrong in selling to other countries. Aren't Western firms selling to the Chinese? Isn't China a top two market for Tesla cars? So, why is it wrong for China to sell to the West or elsewhere? When Western firms were and are dumping cheap agricultural products (their farmers are heavily subsidised) on developing countries, did anyone complain? Why is it "do as I say, not as I do" when it comes to China?

The average Nigerian is an innately dishonest person. The worst are those who claim to be very religious, as I'm dead sure this man is one of such.

The plan: do everything humanely possible to get your money. Don't let it go. Get your money by all means! Next time, even if it means total blackout, NEVER pay for anyone. Don't do it. Even if you're pointed a gun, don't do it. You're dealing with Nigerians - perennial and cruel debtors!

China is notorious for stealing technology. A lot of its advancement in telecoms and bullet trains and other industries came from stolen patents. The theft is very brazen. This just isn't fair trade. The Chinese government is spending $150bn in building microchip plants. This is outright cheating. It isn't by the private sector. Naturally, Chinese companies won't be producing microchips at this stage.

First, everyone "stole" technology from the other. The Americans "stole" from the Germans and the British. The Japanese "stole" from the Americans. The Koreans "stole" from the Japanese. So, China's "stealing" is not out of place. The complaints are because China is not bending to the whims of the West, if not, the same treatment China gets today from the US is what Japan - an ally - experienced when its firms were racing past American automakers and chipmakers. Then came the Plaza Accord.

This is not the first time the West led by the US is trying to sanction a competitor out of business. The difference is that China is big and has nuclear weapons.

Most importantly, this lie that China steals its way to innovation has gone too far. China and Chinese institutions lead in patent fillings. Not just by sheer numbers, but breadth of industries and specialities. For one, China innovated its way to EV dominance. China DID NOT copy any country, but innovated her way through.

China also wants to export wilinilly all over the globe put places a protectionist wall on imports into its own country.

This is not true. Please explain what China deters from entering the country. EU chiefs made this same mendacious claim when they visited the country months ago and were rebuffed. The EU follows the US lead in barring exports of EUV machines to China - a major export - yet complains that China is not importing enough from the union. China buys a lot of German cars, French luxury goods and superior technical machinery from Switzerland.

As for exports, how is it the fault of China that the rest of the world cannot compete with her? Previously, China was known for low-end goods, but as it rose the value chains, it has been able to produce high-quality products at low prices even at the point of amassing losses. How is that a bad thing? The solar panels in developing countries which produce cheap but low-carbon electricity are the result of China's ingenuity at producing high-quality products at low prices. China is not stopping others from doing the same. It is a free world.

Isn't that what capitalism preaches?

Japan, South Korea and especially Taiwan are wary of China and so called advanced technologies. They have more to lose than the West.

How is that the fault of China? I ask again, is it a crime for a country to aspire to high value production? So, China should just remain a consumer, rather than attempt to be a producer as well? Are Korean and Japanese companies not declaring huge profits because their goods are widely purchased by Chinese firms?

China wants to be a leader in microchips. This will hit Taiwan hard! A lot of its companies are suffering because China has specially targeted companies that Taiwan has comparative advantage in.

You haven't explained how this is a bad thing o. How is it a bad thing for China to be a leader in microchips? Are Taiwanese not ethnic Chinese as well? So, why is it right for a younger brother to be successful at one thing, but bad for the elder brother to do the same?

This is something you must understand about economies. When countries are poor, their main selling point is cheap labour. Companies set up labour intensive factories making textiles, garments and so on and other goods.

As these countries grow richer, labour cost increases and gradually they shift from brawn to brains. China is gradually transitioning but the problem it wants leapfrog by decades. China's per capita income is only $8,000-11,000. It wants to achieve what countries with per capita incomes of $30,000 or more are doing.

I would sound like a broken record here: but how is it a bad thing for China to leapfrog technological development? Why is it good for Americans to be good at one thing, but bad for the Chinese? Why should a major economic power of more than 10000 years be made to look wrong because it is reigniting previous achievements?

China I repeat would eventually become a leader in many technologies as it has already in some.

Praise God! Finally, you agree that the Chinese have the right to be a leader in many technologies.

I do understand China's fear is its overdependence on import of microchips but China has largely itself to blame. Its cold war with Taiwan is unnecessary. It should let Taiwan be. Taiwan is too far gone to be part of China today, and the Taiwanese have seen what happened in Hong Kong. A middle ground can be reached between the two countries, but certainly not by force.

What Cold War? The rule is simple: don't declare independence and nothing will happen. The US and Taiwanese elites acknowledge this, but you seem to don't.

Any invasion by China would lead to the death of the Chinese economy.

Where did you hear Chinese officials say they want to invade Taiwan? Please remember the above rule. As for Hong Kong, it has always been a Chinese city. So, why the surprise?

China is currently the world's largest semiconductor market in terms of consumption. In 2020, China represented 53.7% of worldwide chip sales, or $239.45 billion out of $446.1 billion. However, a large percentage are imported from multinational suppliers. In 2020, imports took up over 83% ($199.7 billion) of total chip sales. In response, the country launched a number of initiatives to reduce its reliance on foreign companies, including investing $150 billion into its domestic IC industry through avenues like the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund (CICF). In 2022, the country announced a “Made in China 2025” goal of 70% domestic production.

Nothing wrong here. Unlike Buhari who barred wheat imports in the name of Nigeria producing hers, China is not barring the imports of chips. It is the West led by Americans that is doing so.

grandstar:

Population did not deal China any blow. Rather, they capitalized on it and became the factory of the world.

Unfortunately today, China's long term decline has began due to its over reliance on exports and excessive investment for economic growth.

Also, Xi Jinping has shot China in the foot by prioritising nationalism over economic growth.

How exactly? Xi wants China to be a global leader in advanced technologies. The West disagrees. Is it now a crime for a group of people to chart their economic and technological advancement because another group doesn't like it? Why is it bad for China to lead in electric vehicles, but right for the US? Why is it wrong for China to advance in Semiconductors but Korea can do the same? When did it become a bad thing to use one's ingenuity for itself?

When people, especially black people, mock China with poverty statements, I find it very appalling and ridiculous considering after Whites and Chinese cousins - Koreans and Japanese - Chinese are the next in terms of developmental status. Arabs exceeds us. So, why try to belittle China?

Yes, China has poor people, just like every country. However, in the East and southeast parts of China, where much of the wealth is, the development of China is at the same level as most Western countries. The major cities of China are comparable to those in the West. There is wealth in China and much of it comes from sheer economic activities rather than the stock market. The recent ranking of billionaires shows it - Chinese cities dominate disproportionately. China, a country filled with destitutes over forty years ago, now has more billionaires than any other country and commands a lot of economic dominance. China trades with more countries than the US.

https://www.visualcapitalist.com/charted-which-country-has-the-most-billionaires-in-2024/#:~:text=China%20has%20814%20billionaires%2C%20the,while%20the%20U.S.%20gained%20109.

When I read the above article in the SCMP, if no be say I dey inside train, I would have shedded a tear because I was extremely impressed by the foresight of their elites and determination to succeed.

E dey irritate me anytime I see black people lampoon China. I keep reading dictatorship and mumbo-jumbo, history has it that EVERY developed and prosperous country you see today underwent a form of dictatorship before it became a prosperous democracy. There were bullying, mass killings and high-handedness. Economic development came before democracy, not after. In cases where there were semblance of democracy, there was a dominant ethnic or racial group or political party who controlled everything. But the majority of countries at the forefront of economic development had a form of dictatorship before they liberalised their political systems.

That said, Mr Treadway, Nigeria in its present state can't develop even with a benevolent dictator (Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore was described as such by Western media). The country's demographics doesn't permit that to happen. For dictatorship to work effectively for the benefit of the populace, there needs to be an ethnic or religious or racial dominance by a group that is egalitarian, enterprising, creative and pragmatic.

Lastly, black people, regardless of where they come from, should stop criticising China. Leave that to people who have built functioning societies.

What prolonged my securing mouthwatering oil company job back then was some silly mistakes I made in my documentation and then wrong choice of picking a particular job over others when I got 3 offers at once.

I ignorantly went for the one that is a foreign company thinking as na oyimbo owned company, it will have better future. Unfortunately the company didn't last up to 2 years and they shutdown in Nigeria and I was thrown back to job hunting after I was celebrated lol. Na so e come be like further maths to secure a good job. Anyway, e be like say my village people be get hand for my matter then honestly cos I lost out on several IOCs last stage after passing all tests, interviews. I thank God I didn't commit suicide then sha cos it wasn't easy at all back then.

So some Nigerian graduates do secure good job after NYSC, the course you studied matters and your age of graduation plus your ability to pass aptitude tests and interviews too, back then in our time sha, dunno about now

It still holds, just the competition is stiffer. Population too much plus a slow economy. It is a global trend and worse in poorer but over-populated countries.

As usual the slave mentality continues. That is why your country is a hell hole.

“See your kids go hungry”? Maybe you should have developed yourself first so your kids won’t be at the mercy of a Nigerian boss that doesn’t give a damn about your well being and continue to exploit you till you can no longer breathe.

If “child support payment” was mandatory in Nigeria, some of you wouldn’t be breeding kids like rats.

Slave.

But it is true na. A court has no right to dictate how much a private company should price its products. A non-essential service for that matter.

Kudos to Multichoice. It is capitalism.

Don't stereotype. It happens all around the world.

It only happens in poor countries. Which prosperous country do couples cut their hands because of less than $5?

To be honest they don't care, just don't drop out of school or if you do you need to switch the sub category of your visa from student to work but that resets the count to get permanent residency.

Interviews I have done since I entered Chile is more than 200 interviews. I have interviewed with cisco, Amazon, other big companies. I have even interviewed with the state bank of Chile sef. I failed a lot of my initial interviews but after cracking how to do them well. I wasn't still getting any offers except comments like we went with a better candidate and stuff like that but they will say I am really sound technically. Funny enough my current offer supercedes everything I have interviewed for.

shocked shocked

My guy!!!! grin

I am proud of you!
