Facts backed by evidence are not "play" eventhough they annoy you. cyberbro: |
Benin is the kingdom within Nigeria with the richest collection of artefacts, it seems you didn't notice this. Now that you know, ask yourself why. Ask yourself what type of civilization Benin had and ask yourself the size and importance of Benin Kingdom in the precolonial era. Ask yourself why the Oba of Benin had to be fought by the British to establish Nigeria. You can do all these and come to the same conclusion provided by precolonial documents: Benin was a great empire. Also why was a the bight named after Benin ? Which other kingdom within Nigeria has had a country copy its name ? Sometimes it looks like you guys would rather pluck off your eyes than look at reality when it shows the might of Benin kingdom. |
It seems you are being daft on purpose. Benin republic is not on the map, but your strange brain managed to see it. The big country named "K. of Benin" on the map is Benin kingdom ! There was no Benin republic in that period of time !!! In case you don't know current events, Benin republic copied the name of Benin kingdom !!!! It seems you are also asking me to repeat what I wrote in the comment which you are replying: in the era in which the map was published, Europeans referred to a region within Africa as "negroland", they referred to an other region as "Guinea". You are trying very hard to debunk an accurate and genuine map and all you come up with is mere nonsense. Accept reality and stop wasting my time !!!!! Kukutente23: |
You bring superior arguments proving the precolonial might of Benin with evidence, the yoruba moderators ban you with "antispam bot"... |
Cognitive dissonance is what you are experiencing. I gave the author and the year of publication of the map. Are you suggesting I did some time traveling to fake a map in 1747 ? For your information, every eyewitness written documents of that era attest to the fact that Benin was a large kingdom (or empire) and everywhere around was taking orders from the Oba. Don't feel too hurt by accurate history. It's time to put your ethnic fairytales to sleep and accept the truth. https://share.google/qDITthi2aAzJdos3K Kukutente23: |
You don't seem to understand how maps are made. The people who make the maps get to put the names of the regions and countries on the maps. There is a region which the Europeans referred to as negroland in the era of publication of that map. Kukutente23: |
Actually documented history shows there was just one emperor in the south and his title was Oba and he lived in ... .... .... Benin city. |

Kukutente23:Below is a precolonial map of west Africa. That is why. Other reasons may be the fact that another country, our neighbour copied the name of the Oba's kingdom (Benin republic). An other reason could be: bight of Benin. Zn other reason could be: all the famous Benin artefacts.

Please brother, the name is Benin, not Bini. But God bless you. |
The similarities come from the fact that for example, Lagos used to be part a country called Kingdom of Benin whose capital is Benin city. See precolonial map below. So Lagos and Benin had a lot of common traditions. But since the British took Lagos away from the Oba's control and more than 100 years of colonial and post colonial politics have changed some traditions in Lagos, many things are now different in Edo-state and Lagos-state. For example iyaloja-general is not even a tradition title, indeed as you can see, the word "general" is not an African word. I think the Oba of Lagos created that title some years ago, it didn't exist in precolonial or even colonial Lagos. Anyways, I fail to understand how tinubu's daughter could be so daft that she thought she could just go around and take over traditional matters in various communities? How did she get to calling herself "iyaloja-general of Nigeria"? As if Lagos newly created traditional title were a tradition in all of Nigeria ? Then she goes around trying to insert herself in traditional matters in kingdoms she knows nothing about ![]() AlphaTaikun:

This is the mafia way of the tinubu crime family. This is what happens when the president is a mafia boss. Security in our markets need to be increased. The arsonists are loving on borrowed time. |
Just a reminder, the Oba of Lagos said in an interview, long before the Oba of Benin, that the origins of Lagos are in Benin kingdom. Historical documents from the 1400's to colonisation also prove that Lagos has always been a part of Benin, it is only the British who separated both. Unfortunately for that miscreant, there is no and never will be any iyaloja in Edo-state. |
This guy is not from Edo-state, his comments about Edo-state of which he knows nothing should be disregarded as mere noise. No need for me to educate this enemy on the culture of Edo-state. Let me leave him in his ignorance. FreeStuffsNG: |
When tinubu's daughter declared herself "iyaloja general of Nigeria", I thought it were a joke. It make zero sense, and I thought she had some sense. 1. Iyajola has no meaning outside of yoruba culture. 2. There is no such thing as "iyaloja general of Nigeria" 3. The fact that what tinubu's daughter is doing shows explicitly that her father is incredibly corrupt didn't escape my thinking. Congrats, now tinubu is known to be one of the 3 most corrupt presidents in Africa. Do yoruba really want this on their CV ? It might be time yoruba start fighting against tinubu, because he will ruin your reputation much further, and your blind support of him is only making you complicit to his corruption. It is hard to imagine that when Nigeria starts fighting seriously against corruption, we would want to have a perceived accomplice to corruption in the corridors of power |
You research history through the papers written by people who witnessed it, not through your emotions. Hundreds of Europeans had been visiting our region since the 1400's and they wrote down what they saw, they even drew maps ! These historical documents are still available and they all point to the fact that before colonisation, Lagos was a part of Benin Kingdom ! Benin kingdom was a large country and Lagos or Koramo was just one of its cities ! I don't understand the concept of taking offense when history is recited. |
History is only offensive to liars and uneducated people. The Oba was right, Lagos was a part of Benin kingdom until the British took it from the Oba. You yoruba people have problems with history, it's because of you guys that they stopped teaching history in school. You take offence at history, this is just crazy. Once again, the Oba was very right. Lagos started it's life as a part of Benin. Deal with it ! By the way, the Oba stated that the nucleus of Lagos was founded by Benin, you guys have turned that statement into : "the Oba said that Lagos is Benin territory". What the Oba said is historically accurate, so you counter it by replacing the Oba's statements with your emotions. The basis of yoruba claiming they own Lagos relies on a false history of medieval yoruba which actually never existed. The Oba merely making a proven claim triggered your emotions and you forgot logic. The Oba was right, deal with it ! Lagos belongs to lagosians, not the migrants from the south west or the southeast ! Being yoruba doesn't make you indigenous to Lagos! cyberbro:Eyewitness writen precolonial text stating clearly that Lagos belongs to Benin: "Captain Horseley called it Eco, and that is how the yebous refer to it; but it is not their land: it belongs to Benin, whom have named it Korame, you can recognise the Curamo from older Portuguese reports, just like Eko represents the Ichoo from Holland Hydrographs. Long ago Korame was linked to its metropolis by a very narrow piece of land contained between the great Laguna and the sea; but it has been a while since the Yebous have seazed that very narrow piece of land of which the eastern extremity was invaded by ouyo pirates; and Karamé remained isolated at the extremity of the great Laguna, while it continues to receive from Benin it's governor or political chief." https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k5806879x.r=Y%C3%A9bou?rk=21459;2 Precolonial map of the region showing that Lagos (in its currents form) and its environs were part of Benin (see below) https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8595583b.r=Benin?rk=150215;2 Conclusion: Lagos and its environs were part of Benin. I am not interested in debating things which have already been proven. Also I am not interested in talking to people whom have been harrassing me. (I also want to add that I am actually the only person whom has commented here who actually speaks french and that I am the person who posted the french caption and the book from which it is to nairaland. Some delusional people who don't speak a word of frecnh were trying to "debate" me on the translation of the text several months ago. Fools can only fool other fools.) |
Mentally ill person wake up one day and declares herself "iyaloja general of Nigeria" 😂 The craziest people are those who took her seriously. |
Soon she might inaugurate iyajola general of Ghana 😂 I hear she planned on inaugurating the obi of Kano. aswani: |
Edo-state has no thing call iyaloja or iyaloja general. We have Iyeki, one for every market. And it is a traditional fonction, not a state government one. The governor has no power on this matter, only the Oba has power over this matter. madridguy: |
I suspect tinubu's daughter may have some mental illness. How can you just create a non existent title for yourself as soon as your father becomes president ? This is so ridiculous... "Iyajola-general of Nigeria" since when is there any such thing ? Yet you guys can't see there's something wrong with that girls mental health ? |
You guys seem to not understand that that "inauguration" is in futility, there is no such thing as 'iyeki general" in Edo-state. The Oba has made that clair to tinubu's spoilt daughter. She can keep playing in her playground like a kid whose father never said no to. Nobody in Edo-state recognises an "iyeki-general". It's not part of our culture. So the inaugurated person can go to asorock and be the iyeki-general of aso rock. Us, we wash our hands from this rubbish. Next, tinubu's daughter can go and crown the Oni of Sokoto ... Or the sultan of Enugu... All those would make much more sense than "inaugurating" an "iyeki general" in Edo-state. How many times do we need to tell that spoilt kid that we have no such thing ? Also, in case you guys still don't know, tinubu's daughter has no power at all, no traditional nor political power. She's just a kid playing games with her father's position. I pity those who take her seriously. |
I am sure you are one of those recent migrants into our land who want to claim to be indigenous to the land. But you don't even know the history of the land. |
@amayabor1, For your information also, educated Edo people don't refer to themselves as "indigene of Edo state", that is how outsiders like to refer to us, we are Edo people. Our identity precedes the creation of Edo-state and the state got its name from us, not the other way around. |
