First aid saves lives . But it is important that the first aider has the relevant skills to tackle the emergency . Emergencies are not planned, they suddenly occur. In order to skillfully administer first aider, there are certain necessary supplies that must be available . The first aid kit is a box where medical supplies required for giving first aid is kept . This should be in the home or office . Some people keep it in their car as well. Here are basic items that should be in a first aid box : -Plasters in different sizes and shapes Small , medium and large sterile gauze dressings -Sterile eye dressings -Crêpe rolled bandages -Safety pins -Disposable sterile gloves -Tweezers -Scissors -Alcohol- free cleansing wipes Sticky tape -Digital thermometer -Skin rash cream , such as hydrocortisone -Cream or spray to relieve insect bites and stings -Antiseptic cream -Painkillers such as paracetamol or Ibuprofen [ Also add paracetamol for children] -Over the counter cough medicine -Antihistamine tablets -Distilled water for cleaning wounds https://www.nigerialog.com/health/essential-items-required-in-a-first-aid-box/new/#new |

The game, played at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, was arranged in honour of the country’s president and 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year, George Weah. Henry Onyekuru, who is currently in Galatasaray, opened scoring for the Super Eagles, firing into the top corner to make it 1-0. Gernot Rohr’s men extended their lead before half time, with Simeon ‘Simy’ Nwankwo heading in Oghenekaro Etebo’s corner kick. The hosts pulled one back from the penalty spot in the second, but it did not stop Nigeria from claiming their second win in three days, following their 3-0 win over Seychelles in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier last Saturday. https://www.nigerialog.com/sports/liberia-vs-nigeria-onyekuru-simy-score-as-super-eagles-win/new/#new |
What is vitamin D? Vitamin D is organic fat - soluble vitamin , which is essential for normal metabolic processes , especially related to mineral and bone metabolism. This means that vitamin D essentially helps the body to absorb calcium , magnesium and phosphorus , when ingested and then made to attach adequately to the bone to allow for good skeletal structure , and some other body processes to function well. The human body is unable to produce it from scratch and so requires some external factors like ultra - violet radiation from the sun and a balanced diet before adequate and active form of vitamin D can be produced in the body. Vitamin D exists in different forms as active and inactive forms , which include cholecalciferol D 3 and ergocalciferol D2 . These forms are converted to the active form of vitamin D referred to as 1 , 25 , dihydroxy cholecalciferol. Vitamin D is required for proper bone and mineral metabolism together with parathyroid hormone to control absorption , metabolism and excretion of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. These minerals are essential for development and maintenance of strong bone and musculoskeletal structure and function. Apart from sunlight, what are the sources of vitamin D and how much does the human body need? The ultraviolet part of sunlight is essential for the body to synthesise the precursor forms of vitamin D cholecalciferol D3. Ergocalciferol D2 is photosynthesised in plants and can be taken as diet. These forms of vitamin D are metabolised in the liver and kidneys to the active form of vitamin D through which most of the metabolic effects are achieved. Dietary sources of vitamin D include, liver oil , fatty fish , egg yolk, liver , fortified yoghurt, cheese and some juice products. Also , vitamin D is gotten through supplements, which have been engineered with fixed dose of vitamin D in various forms. The recommended daily allowance for vitamin D intake ranges from about 200 to 1000 international units per day. In deficiency states , the daily intake can be as much as 2000 international units . Children and adults up to the age of 50 need 200 IU vitamin D per day. Adults aged 51 to 70 need 400 IU vitamin D per day , and those aged more than 71 require 600 IU vitamin D daily. Post menopausal women , the obese , and those with fat malabsorption or other risk factors need 800 to 1000 IU vitamin D per day. How is the level of vitamin D in the body determined ? In a normal growing child or healthy adult , it is assumed that vitamin D metabolism is normal and adequate. However , pathological conditions may require that the level of vitamin D and the different metabolites be determined through the laboratory and adequately interpreted by qualified medical personnel. Pathological states include, poor or stunted growth in children, recurrent chest infections , development of bow or knock -knees in children ( Rickets ) , delayed development milestones in children, osteomalacia orosteoporosis in adults , muscle weakness or pain and poor cognitive functions. Also , parathyroid hormone , calcium, magnesium and phosphate blood levels need to be assayed. What are the causes of vitamin D deficiency ? Malnutrition , which can be due to ignorance of parents / guardians on provision of balanced diets or poverty , non- provision of adequate exposure to sunlight , genetic / hereditary conditions, which may cause inability of the body to produce active form of vitamin D or the body not being able to adequately respond to the presence of active vitamin D. There are also such pathological states as chronic kidney disease and chronic liver disease and use of drugs , which interfere with vitamin D metabolism like rifampicin , dexamethasone and some anticonvulsant medications. What symptoms and consequences can be associated with vitamin D deficiency? Poor bone formation and structure , poor neuromuscular and nerve functions , increased risk of developing bone deformities like rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults , increased incidence of neuropathic pain in individuals with type 2 DM , increased risk of developing such autoimmune disease states as multiple sclerosis , rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 DM and may contribute to increased risk of developing such cancers as colorectal cancer and leukemia. What groups are most at risk of vitamin D deficiency? Children, elderly, house -bound and nursing home residents , obese individuals who store more of the inactive vitamins in adipose tissues , women on oral contraceptives . Others include individuals with pathologies like malnutrition , chronic liver or kidney disease , as well as pregnant women. What happens to the body , if there is excess vitamin D? It is unusual for excess of vitamin D to occur in the body , because there is a negative feedback mechanism , which downplays the processes involved in absorption and conversion to active vitamin D. Exogenous intake of vitamin D , either through regular intake of vitamin as supplements, or through therapy may cause hypervitaminosis. A high level of vitamin D above a defined cut off ( above 150 to 200 ng /ml ) is associated with increased amount of calcium in the blood. This high level of calcium is what causes the damages associated with high level of vitamin D in the body , affecting the bone , cardiovascular system and enzymatic activities in the body. Noted signs and symptoms include, general body weakness, weight loss , confusion, poor concentration , drowsiness, nausea , vomiting, depression , abdominal cramps and in extreme case , may lead to coma. It may also cause a condition called nephrogenic diabetes insipidus in which the body is unable to store water, causing the individual to continually pass a lot of urine. Excess calcium in blood also puts the individual at risk of developing kidney stones , which may cause kidney pains and kidney failure. Management of high vitamin D in the body involves discontinuation of vitamin D intake , restriction of calcium in diet , use of steroid and other specific treatments to control the effects of excess calcium in the blood . Vitamin D toxicity is not a common occurrence compared to vitamin D deficiency. What home remedies are available to manage vitamin D deficiency? Prevention is better than cure. Sunshine is readily available. Morning sunshine bath is advised for individuals at risk for about 30 minutes to an hour per day. The use of sunscreen creams on the skin significantly reduces the capacity of the skin to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D rich food includes cod liver oil , fish ( such as mackerel , sardines , catfish ) , egg , and green vegetables . Fortified food products are readily available and children especially can be placed on diets with good source of vitamin D. Milk and dairy products , bread , yoghurt, soy products and cereals. Suspected cases of vitamin deficient individuals should see qualified medical personnel for investigation and management , especially after failure to respond to available local remedies. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/maintaining-required-level-of-vitamin-d-essential-for-health/new/#new |
Emergencies aren’t planned and knowing how to combat health emergencies is a great skill to have. Having good first aid skills could decide the fate of whoever needs it. In commemoration of the World First Aid Day , here are three first aid tips to follow when the need arises : Cuts There are various ways , like chopping vegetables , of sustaining a cut , one of the most common everyday accidents. Cuts vary in size and depth of the area affected, but small cuts are only a few centimetres in length and depth. Tip: Apply firm pressure over the affected area for a few minutes with a clean cloth and hold it in place for about ten minutes . Once you ’ve stopped the bleeding , rinse the cut under cool running water . If it doesn ’t stop after 20 - 30 minutes , or you have a previous experience of prolonged bleeding , go to the nearest hospital while applying pressure over the affected area . 2 .Burns These types of accidents may occur at work , during sports or in the kitchen. The extent or degree of the burnt area and the specific areas affected decide the next line of treatment. For burns covering a large area , it is imperative to go to the hospital at once. Tip: For less severe burns , hold the affected area beneath cool running water for 10 to 15 minutes. Cover the area with a sterile gauze bandage and do not apply ice or ointments. Also, do not break blisters! Insect Bites This is a common occurrence in our environment , especially bites from insects like mosquitoes and bees. Tip: Wash the area around the sting with soap and water . Apply a cold pack or cloth to reduce swelling at the site of the bite . Then, apply Hydrocortisone or lidocaine creams which will help minimise pain and itching. Create a first aid kit box This is a very important tip. Having a well-stocked first aid box goes a long way when you have an emergency requiring first aid . Ideally, there should be one around at home or at work. This will save you trips to the pharmacy and prevent delays in an emergency. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/three-first-aid-tips-that-could-save-your-life/new/#new |
Do you know the real age of your heart? There is an online test that gives the real age of the heart . According to BBC , Public Health England are urging people over 30 years to take the test to determine the age of their heart. A lot of people are under the illusion that heart - related diseases are only for aged people but, this heart age test will indicate if an individual is at risk of stroke or heart attack. Although the test will not diagnose any heart illness , the results will determine if there is a need to change lifestyle to reduce the risk of any heart -related disease. According to an estimate , an unhealthy lifestyle puts four out of five people at risk of heart- related disease an this can be avoided by quitting unhealthy habits like smoking, exercising and eating healthy diets. Out of almost two million people that have taken the heart age , 78% had a heart age higher than their real age this puts them at risk of a heart illness or early death. The test is supported by the British Heart Foundation and the Stroke Association. The test makes an estimate through a series of age and lifestyle - related questions , and then predicts the risk of heart attack or stroke at a certain age . It also recommends lifestyle changes to be made to reduce the risk of heart -related illness. Simple ways to improve heart health Quit smoking Engage in physical activity Check your weight Reduce intake of saturated fat Increase fibre intake Eat more fruits and vegetables Eat fish Reduce salt intake Reduce alcohol intake https://www.nigerialog.com/health/do-you-know-your-heart-may-be-ageing-faster-than-you-are/new/#new |
Ever thought about the reasons why the rich people continue to make more money and get richer while the poor people and poverty seem inseparable? According to Oxfam report in 2015, the richest 1% of the world currently control 48% of the world's wealth. This according to Business Insider translates 80 wealthiest people in the world controlling approximately $1.9 trillion. As Nigerians, the question we usually asked about rich people is whether they have two heads. See, you don't need to know how many heads they've got. Instead, we should study the things the rich do that the poor aren't doing. Here are some of the things the rich people do that poor people don't. 1. The rich focus on opportunities not obstacles One of the factors that make the rich make more money is their focus on opportunities. For instance, when a shoe salesman finds himself in a country where the natives do not wear shoes, he will most likely see this an opportunity to sell a pair of shoes to everyone in the city. A poor man in the same market might be discouraged to sell because the fact that no one wears shoes in the country could mean nobody will patronise him. It's all about perspective. 2. The rich associates with positive successful people Rich people believe that attitude is everything. They believe if they hang out with negative people who complain a lot about the government, the economy and everything else, they might start doing the same. This is why most rich people are always in the company of their fellow rich men and women, who are always giving them something positive to think about moneywise. A gathering of the poor will most likely discuss the government policies, the latest crime and scandal with so much negative energy. 3. The rich grow bigger than their problems When a poor man has a problem, he'll first attribute to a spiritual attack from his village people. He'll think about bad luck and how someone somewhere has been blocking his chances of growing big. After complaining, he'll begin to look for solutions where there is none. However, when the rich have a problem, they might scratch their head for a little while, but they won't give up. They look for practical solutions to their problem and make sure the problem is solved. 4. The rich always learn and grow One major reason the poor don't grow is because they are always only hungry to eat not to learn, while the rich on the other hand are always starving for knowledge. They know and believe that the more they learn, the more they are likely to succeed. 5. The rich think 'both,' the poor think 'either or.' When you are interested in two items but you have an amount of money that can only buy one, then you have an opportunity cost of choosing one and leave the other. A poor man in a situation like this will definitely choose one and let the other go. But a rich man who genuinely has interest in the two items will most likely invest the given amount of money, make a profit and then come back to buy both items. https://www.nigerialog.com/random-thoughts/5-things-rich-people-do-that-poor-people-don't-do/new/#new |
There are many reasons people spray perfumes. However, some perfumes fade away too quickly. Don’t worry, as there are some simple steps you need to follow to make them smell for a whole day. Here are 5 steps you must follow to make sure you smell nice the whole day: 1. Apply at the right time It is always advisable that you apply your perfume before dressing up. This will allow it to dry on your skin. The scent will be locked in your skin. However, when you dress up before it dries on your skin, the skin will rub it off before it gets locked on your skin. 2. Don’t shake it Usually, people are always shaking their perfumes before spraying them. This is against the laws of perfumes. When you shake them, they release air which will reduce their concentration, reducing their quality. 3. Keep away from light It is always advisable to keep the fragrance box with it. Choose the right type There are many different types of perfumes. Choosing the right type will make it stay for long. There are those types that smell nice for a short time, but there are other types that smell nice for the whole day. Go for the ones that have a lot more pungent. 5. Apply at the right place Perfumes need the right place for them to stay for long. Applying them in the right places will make them stick on your body for long. The right places to apply your perfume include; neck, wrist, ankles, inside elbows, calves, ankles and behind knees. Naira is the official currency of Nigeria. We use Naira every day to do almost everything but a lot of people don’t seem to know much about it. If you have ever wondered how this term became the system of money that became generally accepted in Nigeria and when we started using it, then this piece is written to tell you something about the currency you spend every day. On Monday, January 1, 1973, the Federal Government of Nigeria introduced a new money system. Before then, the official currency was the Nigerian Pounds which was introduced in 1907 while the minor unit of the currency was Shillings. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, the decision to change to decimal currency followed the recommendations of the Decimal Currency Committee set up in 1962 which submitted its report in 1964. Meanwhile, prior to the introduction of the new currency in 1973, Chief Obafemi Awolowo was the Federal Commissioner for Finance between 1967 and 1971. And as the Finance Minister, Awolowo took it upon himself to come up with a new name for the new currency as the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon had reportedly announced in March 1971, that Nigeria would change to decimal currency on January 1, 1973. When asked how Awolowo arrived at the term NAIRA, his daughter, Tokunbo Awolowo in an interview said her father collapsed the name of the country and arrive at the term Naira. ''He just took the name of Nigeria and collapsed it to Naira. That’s what he told us and that was how he arrived at the name ‘Naira’ and that was when he was the Federal Commissioner for Finance'' she said. However, as of 1973, one Naira was the major currency unit in the country. Four years after the introduction of Naira, a new banknote denomination of the value of 20 Naira was issued on Friday, February 11, 1977, and as a result, N20 became the first Nigerian currency bearing the portrait of a Nigerian citizen, General Murtala Ramat Muhammad. Interestingly, 26 years after Naira became the official currency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, another denomination of the value of N100 was introduced with the portrait of Chief Obafemi Awolowo precisely in December 1999. And in a bid to facilitate an efficient payment system, the Central Bank of Nigeria introduced N200, N500 and N1000 notes in November 2000, April 2001 and October 2005 respectively. https://www.nigerialog.com/business/naira-this-is-how-this-term-became-nigeria's-official-currency/new/#new |
Shea butter is an oil rich in fats that is derived from the karite tree (also known as the shea tree) is your solution for many skin, health, and hair health issues. As well as the beauty benefits, you won't believe the health benefits of shea butter. Fairly recently, this butter has gained huge popularity in the western world due to its widespread use in several beauty products, such as lotions, cosmetics, shampoos, and conditioners. If you are looking to find a great natural beauty product for your skin or hair, then shea butter is a wonderful choice. There's more to shea than just beauty though, we are here to tell you more about the health and nutritional benefits of shea. What is Shea Butter? According to Wellness Mama: Shea butter is a skin superfood that comes from the seeds of the fruit of the Shea (Karite) tree and that is naturally rich in vitamins A, E and F. It offers UV protection (it is SPF ~6) and provides the skin with essential fatty acids and the nutrients necessary for collagen production. Shea butter has been used in Africa and many other locations for years to improve skin and hair. It also has a long history of medicinal use, such as in wound care and even treating leprosy. It’s also not uncommon in that part of the world to eat shea butter as well, much as we use palm oil in products. Health Benefits of Shea Butter Shea butter is a mixture of different types of fats. Fats are made of two main components; glycerol and fatty acids. In the case of shea butter, there are five different fatty acids; oleic acid (the same fatty acid in olive oil and sunflower oil), stearic acid (the same fatty acid in cocoa butter), linoleic acid, palmitic acid (the same fatty acid in palm oil) and arachidic acid (the same fatty acid in groundnut oil and groundnut paste). Three of the fatty acids in shea butter are saturated fatty acids, which are generally regarded as less nutritious. However, recent studies have shown that the predominant saturated fatty acid in shea butter, stearic acid (which makes up about 40% of shea butter), is linked with a reduced risk of heart diseases, hence, shea butter is a healthier replacement for margarine. This is because margarine contains trans-fatty acids which are linked with heart diseases. They go on to say that, ''shea butter also contains lupeol, a chemical that lowers cholesterol and protects the heart and blood vessels against inflammations. Also, there are seven other naturally-occurring chemicals in shea butter that help reduce pain by reducing inflammations.'' Moreover, shea butter is a good source of phenols which are strong antioxidants that prevent cancers and heart diseases. Furthermore, shea butter is a great source of vitamins such as vitamin E and vitamin A which both protect the skin and help to promote good eyesight. Not only is shea good for the skin, hair and nails but it offers excellent health benefits. It's a rich source of vitamins and contains disease fighting antioxidants. The ways in which shea butter promotes heart health mean it's also a great ingredient to cook with. We love a multi-tasking product! https://www.nigerialog.com/beauty/the-health-benefits-of-shea-butter/new/#new |

When you pass the age of 25 , becoming married automatically appears on your list of expectations . This might appear from people who should care less about your marital status orwhat you choose to do with your personal life . All they do is remind you of how serious the preservation of your family lineage is or the limitation of your biological clock. Some of us let this pressure get to us , usually forcing us into settling with the wrong spouse . Getting married and staying married should be the objective and , for this to be accomplished , choosing the ideal companion is extremely important. So if you are over 25 and unmarried , here are five tips to help you deal with the pressure: Own it! The sole fact here is that you are not married . You are not a criminal; you are simply single ! If you become offended at this valid remark every time someone makes it, then you are living in denial. Own your status. Look at it from an angle of concern Some of these “good intention” questioners are plain amebos trying to make a jest of you or get inside gist . But also note that many of them are genuine from their own point of view. Think of it as their own way of showing you they care. Know what you want Being single is an opportunity to work on yourself . It is not a time to feel pity for your existence or waste your years . Know what you want and why you are single . Own it, work on it, live it and be proud of who you are. Do not sway under the pressure. It is not a race “Do your own make I do my own .” Nothing in life is a race , not even marriage. Do what makes you happy and comfortable . Marrying the wrong person can take a toll on your life . You are better off taking your time and going at your own pace. Stay away from people who do not respect your decisions If your friends like you, they must respect your decision. If you are surrounded by friends who will always tell you ‘ah , do quick , you don’t have time again ’, then you need to change that crowd . Nobody should be with people who are trying to get them to do things they are not ready to do. https://www.nigerialog.com/family/handling-the-drama-of-being-25-and-unmarried-25993/new/#new |
There’s bound to be a lot to drink and a lot to eat. [Trust Nigerian parties, chop till you drop] That’s totally expected. There is also the possibility that in all that merriment and happiness, few tears will be seen. This, also, is quite expected and it’s totally OK. Of course, the tears shed at wedding ceremonies are usually tears of joy, and can be seen in the following wedding moments… 1. The bride walking down the aisle Really, nobody plans this, but somehow, watching that bride taking one step after the other down the aisle in her stunning wedding dress for the first time… several eyes just fill up and the joyous, emotions tears roll down the cheeks. [Time to start dabbing] 2. Vows ‘To hold, to love, to cherish… in sickness, in health [sniff]… in riches, in poverty [another sniff]… till death do us part…’ There’s something about reciting these time-hallowed words that moves many couples [and others] to tears. 3. Personalized vows Seriously, there’s bound to be few teardrops when one of the couple strings together some amazing, poetic words for the other. Especially if the words are really well-written and expressive. 4. When the bride cries This is a recurring thing at weddings, but it still has the ability to well up powerful emotions in the bridesmaids, and some other emotional guests. 5. When the groom cries This happens less often, and explains why every time a groom sheds a tear at a wedding, there will be more than a number of people who will join in the emotional display. 6. Parents’ tears When the father of the bride cries as he gives her away, or when they call the mother to pray for her, and mommy/daddy breaks down in tears... awwwn... 7. Emotional speeches Whether it's mom, dad, the maid of honour or the best man, any good speech can quickly open up the floodgates. https://www.nigerialog.com/family/7-most-emotional-moments-at-weddings/new/#new |
It's no secret that Moin Moin and Akara are two of the most popular breakfast meals in Nigeria. Moin moin and Akara are both meals made from pureed beans and spicy ingredients, full of proteins, light and refreshing. They are both meals that can be prepared and garnished with many ingredients like fish, pepper, egg, etc. However, there are many distinctions between them. Moin-Moin Moin-moin or moi moi is one of the most versatile breakfast meals in Nigeria. It isn't necessarily a staple breakfast meal as it can be served at any time of the day. It is a common side for rice at weddings and parties and a side for garri at any time of the day, but for breakfast, it is more commonly served with akamu » or bread. It is made by steaming black-eyed pea pudding. The beans is first soaked in cold water until soft enough and the fine outer peels are removed. The beans are ground or blended until a fine paste is achieved. Seasonings such as salt, seasoning cubes, crayfish, palm oil are added for the signature moin moin taste. Other garnishing can be added such as sardines, corned beef, eggs. This mixture can be placed in any container ranging from the native banana leaves to clear nylon bags to aluminium pans, and then steamed using water. If moin moin is too heavy or difficult for you, maybe you should try the alternative. Akara Akara, Bean Cakes, Bean Balls, Bean Fritas or Acarajé in Portuguese... is a Nigerian breakfast recipe made with beans. Akara is not the sort of street snack you find in elite spaces or parties, because it isn't that versatile. However, it is one of the most epic meals that every (struggling) Nigerian knows well. Just like moin moin, the beans is soaked until soft and the outer peels removed. It is then pureed and seasoned with salt, seasoning cubes, palm oil and pepper. The enthusiasm in the Super Eagles camp was yesterday dampened by news that two of the players Coach Gernot Rohr banked on for success in Nigeria ’s second match in the Cameroon 2019 qualifying series may not be fit for the game. The players , Ola Aina of Torino and Arsenal ’s Alex Iwobi are said to be ill and may have been knocked out of the game. Ola Aina , who is one of the few full backs in the team , pulled out of Torino ’s match with SPAL on Sunday night due to a muscular injury , while Iwobi was not dressed for Arsenal ’s 3 -2 defeat of Cardiff also at the weekend . A statement by Torino last night said Aina has pulled out of Saturday ’s qualifier due to the injury , but there was no immediate reaction to the story from the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF). According to Torino , Aina , who is on loan from Chelsea, will undergo more tests to ascertain the extent of the damage to his left femoral bicep . Reports from Arsenal say Alex Iwobi is down with influenza , which could knock him out of the qualifier against Seychelles. Meanwhile, African football ruling body, CAF has named Kenyan referee , David Omweno as the centre referee for Saturday ’s clash at the Stade Linte on Saturday in Victoria. The 34 - year -old Kenyan , Omweno will have as his first Assistant Referee, his compatriot Gilbert Cheruiyot, while Uganda’ s Mark Ssonko will act as Assistant Referee. Omweno was one of the two referees suspended by CAF for three months in 2016 for poor performance. The Kenyan referee was accused of ruling out a legitimate goal scored by Libya in their 1 - 0 loss to Tunisia in November 2016. Nigeria is third in Group E with no point after losing 2 -0 to South Africa in their opening game 14 months ago , while Libya and South Africa are joint leaders in the group with three points . The Super Eagles , therefore , must beat Seychelles away from home to rekindle hope of qualifying from Group E for Cameroun 2019. The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to hold from January 12 to February 3 in Cameroun. https://www.nigerialog.com/sports/ainas-injury-iwobis-illness-rock-super-eagles-camp/new/#new |

The Internet seems to think that the newly constructed Panseke pedestrian bridge maze in Abeokuta is the longest in sub-saharan Africa. Nigeria is home to the second longest bridge in Africa and the longest canopy walk in Africa. However, it seems another bridge has caught some attention. The Panseke fly over bridge was completed early this year in Panseke adigbe, Abeokuta and was constructed by the Ogun State Government led by Senator Ibikunle Amosun, CON, FCA. It is allegedly the longest pedestrian bridge in sub-Saharan Africa, but this information is not confirmed. What is known though, is that the Panseke bridge is also known as the bridge of confusion. This is due its many turns and diversions. Witnesses say that it is very easy to get lost while trying to find your way. Hopefully, more information on the length of the bridge is disclosed soon. Would you like to try navigating this bridge? https://www.nigerialog.com/metro/this-pedestrian-bridge-maze-in-abeokuta-is-allegedly-the-longest-in-sub-saharan-/new/#new

The demand for bread has escalated the number of bakeries across the country . And though this development is coming with some advantages , such as consumers now able to choose from a wide variety and the possibility of healthy competition among bakers, there are concerns that some bread manufacturers are applying unwholesome practices for economic gains. It was observed that in Lagos , for instance , bread now comes in different labels , colours and shapes . The issue here is that no one is now sure what goes into the making of some of these brands, especially now that the campaign against potassium bromate seems to have subsided, a development already raising serious health concerns. Another area of concern is the level of hygiene and environment , where bread is produced . Since the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control ( NAFDAC ) and other monitoring agents seem to have relaxed in their duties, coupled with laxity on the part of health and environmental officers , the big question begging for answers from concerned consumers and health experts is: How safe is the bread we eat? It was observed from some bakeries visited that majority were in hidden and confined areas , where relevant stakeholders would be constrained from monitoring their activities. A consultant Public Health Physician and Nutritionist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital ( LUTH ) , Dr. Folu Olatona , said a large percentage of bread consumed in the country is made in unhygienic conditions , which can lead to food poisoning. She said : “Sometimes , the staff in charge of handling the bread may wear dirty uniforms, or the bread is handled with dirty hands or placed on unclean surfaces or cleaned with dirty foam before being put in the nylon wrap. This improper handling could cause food poisoning. Symptoms of food poisoning include nausea , vomiting and severe outcomes , such as seizures, brain damage or even death . “Bread is nutritious, as it contains several nutrients, including carbohydrate , protein and fat. However, it is not healthy to consume white bread made from white flour frequently. White flour is refined grain, which contains refined carbohydrates . Refined carbohydrates like white bread releases sugar speedily into the bloodstream and the surplus sugar tend to be stored as fat in the body. This can in turn lead to obesity , which increases the risk for many non -communicable diseases, including hypertension , diabetes and cancer. ” The National Treasurer , Association Of Master Bakers And Caterers Of Nigeria, Evang . Josiah Oluyinka Adejare , who confirmed the influx of different brands of bread into the market , lamented that his organisation lacks the power to regulate or sanction majority of the bakeries, because they are not registered members of the association. He said : “There are now different types of bakeries in the state— mushroom bakeries, eateries , industrial bakeries and the local bakeries. We are the local bakeries, adhering to government ’s policies and obeying the rules . We have been fighting this issue for a very long time , but have recorded no tangible result. Because there is freedom of association, the bakers have refused to join us and government gives them more recognition because they have money. The development is forcing our people out of business, as many have closed shop , while others are selling their equipment . We have informed the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ( FMARD ) , but nothing is being done till now.” Although he couldn ’ t give the actual figure of bakeries in Lagos State , Adejare noted that about 5 ,000 bakers are in the association. He said : “To achieve set targets effectively , our association has a monitoring team . We also have a Task Force in each local government area that monitors production process of bread , which was part of the reason we were recognised by the Federal Government . For instance , on the issue of potassium bromate , we don ’t give our members any room to use any additive that is not in conformity with government ’s guidelines, likewise in terms of hygiene.” Dr. Damilola Akinsulire , Consultant Public Health Physician at Lagos University Teaching Hospital ( LUTH ) , said efforts must be made to ensure that the process of making bread is done in hygienic conditions and its ingredients safe for consumption. She said : “A popular additive used in flour to strengthen dough and enable it to rise in recent past was potassium bromate , which also gives baked bread an appealing white colour . But its usage has been linked with cancer and, therefore, the use of bromate is now banned in many countries. “In Nigeria , the use of potassium bromate in bread was banned by NAFDAC in 2004 . But recent published studies and researches on assessment of bread safety in the country showed that bread consumed in the country still contains potassium bromate , an indication that compliance with regulations is still low .“Apart from the carcinogenic effect of potassium bromate , it has also been implicated in cough and sore throat , when inhaled , kidney failure, breakdown of the nutritional quality of bread by its ability to degrade vitamins A2 , B1 , B2, E and niacin , which are the main vitamins available in bread.” She explained that the chemical has also been reported to cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea , vomiting , hearing loss , bronchial and ocular problems .“ Some studies have linked potassium bromate to nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity , ” she said . “It is important for bakers to know that there are basically two ways by which humans get poisoned with potassium bromate : by ingestion , when it is present in food such as bread , and by inhalation. “It is , therefore , not safe for the bread consumer and the factory worker , who works in a bakery where the substance is used as bread improver. So , regulatory authorities should continue to raise awareness, ensure constant monitoring and enforce strict compliance in order to ensure that bakers always comply with rules and regulations. Director , Special Duties , NAFDAC , Dr. Abubakar Jimoh , said the agency is working round the clock to ensure that in the area of hygiene , Nigerians , especially in rural areas , are enlightened. He said : “We are planning to organise workshops to educate the people . It is not just about the bakers , but the attitude of people generally towards hygiene. So , we are making efforts to create awareness .”Jimoh noted that feelers received by the agency , coupled with Masters Bakers Association ’s cooperation have been encouraging, which suggest that application of potassium bromate is a thing of the past. “There is a very high level of compliance , he said . “But if some bakers are still using bromate , it is not to our knowledge .“NAFDAC is a scientific organisation and we have our officers on the field, who are working together with bakers to ensure strict compliance .“What we did in the past, when the issue of bromate usage in bread was rampant , was to solidify and strengthen the union membership . In other words , we made it mandatory that all master bakers must form a union , so that there would be self-control and regulations in terms of code of conduct. “Before NAFDAC came in 1993, there was no master bakers association. We introduced it across the country , to instill discipline and decorum . The body is represented in all states .”He said the use of potassium bromate is a sin for any baker and punishable, because of the health consequences arising from its use. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/how-safe-is-bread-we-eat!/new/#new |
Nigeria may be home to the second largest film industry in the world , but life as a Nollywood film critic remains as frustrating as that of a thirsty sailor stranded at sea. And with few publications covering film reviews ( and paying peanuts for them ) , Nigeria ’ s small circle of dedicated critics is forced to earn a living through other avenues . “[Film criticism ] is a payless job ,” says Oris Aigbokhaevbolo, a film critic and editor . “I have written for a lot of local platforms , and I know how the payment regime works , which means it doesn ’t work .” Cinephile Alithnayn Abdulkareem, who pursues film criticism as an active hobby , cited lack of funding as the reason she won’ t pursue it as a career . She also questions the editorial independence of some publications , claiming an editor once asked her to rewrite her copy to appease Nollywood insiders. “I tweeted a very angry post about being censored ,” says Abdulkareem . Another challenge facing film critics comes from Nollywood ’s indiscriminating audience and filmmakers , who regard them as pesky middlemen . “Directors are pissed because we ’re telling audiences what to watch and their authority is being undermined ,” says Aigbokhaevbolo. “Meanwhile, the audience is asking : ‘Who are you to tell me what to see ?’ In a sense , the critic is an orphan , an intruder.” The unprofessionalism exhibited by some critics , however , is also to blame for the resistance from industry insiders and filmgoers. Actor and producer Iretiola Doyle says she ’s read criticism stating that a character she plays “looks like a horse .” “Many times a lot of bile comes through that makes you question the writer ’ s objectivity ,” she adds. In truth , good reviews should go beyond insults , serving instead as historical documentation of Nollywood ’s development and Nigerian culture at a particular point in time , as wells as a wind vane pointing creatives and audiences to excellence. On this point, Doyle agrees . “When the criticism is constructive , it serves as a check and balance on an industry not famous for honest and clinical self- appraisal. ” Beyond providing guidance , film criticism can be enjoyed for its literary qualities as Nollywood director Mildred Okwo attests. “A well- written one is like sipping on very good wine , “she says . “ You don’t want it to finish.” But if the vineyard yields poor grapes , should one expect good wine ? For critics operating in an industry where middling movies are the norm, reviewing them becomes a sadomasochistic undertaking , even for the most enthusiastic. “If the art is always sub- par, you lose energy after a while ,” says Abdulkareem. “I ’ve run out of ways to say the acting talent is not the problem Nollywood has , [ that ] what Nollywood lacks is good directors and cinematographers .” Aigbokhaevbolo agrees , adding he feels a responsibility to the audience to speak out against shoddy movies. Perhaps, Nollywood ’ s penchant for poor quality films can be curbed if awarding bodies set took on the role of the silent, powerful critic and set stringent judging criteria as done by The Golden Globes and Academy Awards. Further , a distinction needs to be made between critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. That way , first - rate movies that aren’ t box office hits can be recognised for their artistry. That said , all isn ’t gloom and doom in Nollywood as some young filmmakers actively court the opinions of critics . Okwo , whose recent screenplay has undergone several rewrites , says she has benefitted from the input of critics . Granted , Nollywood ’s amorphous structure isn’ t conducive to film criticism. But if more critics leveraged social media to promote promising talents — who otherwise might be overlooked , publicised reputable movies that aren ’t getting the exposure they deserve and , most importantly , took great pains to improve their craft, Nollywood movies- goers would be more inclined to appreciate the importance of their work and in turn start demanding excellence from Nigeria ’s second -rate film industry. https://www.nigerialog.com/celebrities/is-film-criticism-dead-in-nollywood/new/#new |

The new world for working structure, standard education and endless possibilities — Canada. Here is all you need to know before travelling to Canada. Canada is one of the best countries to immigrate to. It loves to take people as immigrants into their country and many people have taken advantage of it. If you have your visa after the arduous process of getting it , then, you are almost on your way. These are a few things you need to know before you board your flight. 1. It is a very big country Canada is an enormous country of about 9.9 million square kilometres, surrounding by three oceans. This means that the United Kingdom could fit into Canada over 40 times. So, expect very long distances if you expect to travel from one city to the next, even with air travel. 2. It is freezing cold In most parts of Canada, temperatures can dip to as low as -30°C or -40°C . For people coming from tropical countries, such as Nigeria, adjusting to the cold can be quite difficult. Remember to wear/carry along lots of layers and avoid going out when the temperature is really low. 3. They have two official languages Canada is a bi-lingual country, which means there is a section of Canada that has only French speakers. However, it's not a strict requirement to know some French. In French parts such as Quebec, including the cities of Montreal and Quebec City, make an effort to speak a little bit of French to locals though. 4. Alcohol isn't available in supermarkets You won't find alcohol so easily in some parts Canada as alcohol sales have a lot more rules than in other countries. In British Columbia, you can only find alcohol in provincially-owned and private liquor stores while this is not the same as in Quebec. 5. They are really polite folks The running stereotype about Canadians is that they are really polite folks. “Sorry” is a word that you can never stop hearing in Canada, especially when you walk down a street or go to a store. At any opportunity, Canadian apologise even when the situation might not necessitate it. In fact, it got so bad that in 2009 the Canadian government had to pass an ‘Apology Act’ in Ontario. It means that if any Canadian says ‘sorry’ at the time of a crime or incident, it won’t count as an admission of guilt – just an expression of sympathy. 6. Beware of bears There are three kinds of bears to worry about in Canada, from least to most scary: black bears, grizzly bears and polar bears. Black bears are about 500,000 in population but they don't go near humans unless starving. Grizzly bears are quite huge and tend to attack more humans. They are about 20,000 in number. Polar bears are more dangerous and their population in Canada, 12,000, make up for 70% of polar bear population in the world. Because of how frequently they tend to attack, residents of Churchill, Manitoba actually leave their car doors unlocked in case someone needs shelter. https://www.nigerialog.com/travel/interesting-things-you-need-to-know-about-canada-before-you-travel/new/#new |

Deodorant is essential. With the weather getting hotter, sweating in your clothes as you go about your activities is inevitable. The downside, though , is that the active ingredients in most deodorants are aluminium- based , and they block the sweat pores and minimise sweating. The presence of metal and the other inactive ingredients has caused a lot of worries. They have been linked to higher incidences of cancer , Alzheimer’ s disease and others . If you are extra conscious about what you put on your skin , then you’re on the right path. But what do you use when an antiperspirant is not an option , or when you’ve run out and can ’t lay your hands on some deodorant at the time ? You should never have to choose between stinky sweat or potential cancer. There are some natural alternatives that can minimise perspiration and sweaty smells . Bear in mind that the results may not be as dramatic as you’re used to, especially when you first start using them . Akamu by the Igbos, Ogi by the Yorubas and the generic pap by most Nigeria, it is one of the trickiest meals to make. Here's how to prepare the perfect pap/akamu/ogi without errors. The process of making pap could be a hit or miss if one isn't used to the process. If not paid close attention, it could become a watery or lumpy mess. All you'll need to make pap is: Wet Corn Starch (Akamu, Ogi or Pap) Water (Hot and Cold) Milk Sugar (to taste) Directions 1. Put some lumps of akamu/ogi/pap into a sizeable bowl. Don't put too much. 2. Use a tablespoon to crush the lumps of ogi into very small pieces. 3. Add cold water in small quantities and mix till you have a medium consistency of thickness with no lumps. 4. Put a kettle of water to boil. 5. Just before the water boils, stir the mix very well because some of the ogi may have settled at the bottom of the bowl. If not stirred well, this is the major cause of lumps when you start making it. 6. Once the water boils, pour it slowly but steadily in a circular motion into the bowl of akamu and stir at the same time. Pouring the hot water slowly and stirring at the same is very important because this prevents lumps. 7. Once you see the mixture setting, stop stirring and reduce the flow of water you are pouring till the akamu has completely set. 8. Set the kettle aside and stir the pap very well. If it is too thick for you, you can add more hot water. But be careful else it will become watery. Remember that you will still add milk. 9. Add milk and some sugar to taste and stir everything to the way you like it. https://www.nigerialog.com/food/how-to-prepare-the-perfect-papakamuogi-without-errors/new/#new |
Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of an area of skin caused by increased production of melanin. The most common type of hyperpigmentation is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This occurs when a skin injury heals and leaves a flat area of discolouration behind. It is commonly found among acne sufferers. As with all skin issues, hyperpigmentation is treatable but takes time , commitment and lifestyle changes . Here are suggestions that can help you treat hyperpigmentation: Wear sunscreen every day Hyperpigmentation gets worse with increased sun exposure. Sunscreens that contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can block out most of the rays that will darken the spots. Invest in a foundation ( if you’re a frequent makeup wearer ) or moisturiser with built - in SPF to protect your skin. Face acids Skincare products with face acids work by exfoliating the top layer of your skin. Whenever you exfoliate with a face acid, new skin cells emerge to take the place of the old ones. This helps even out your skin tone . When looking for treatment with face acids, look for products that include alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic, lactic , citric , malic or tartaric acid. Make sure you use a product with an acid content of 10 % or less. Higher concentrations are best left to a dermatologist. If wearing sunscreen and using face acids don’t work , you may need to visit your dermatologist for medical -grade treatments. Some of those treatments include laser treatments , chemical peels , microdermabrasion and micro -needling. Your dermatologist will examine your skin and let you know the best treatment for your skin . Sometimes, hyperpigmentation is a symptom of an underlying issue . If at home treatments don’t work , it’s best to visit the doctor. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/hyperpigmentation-what-it-is-and-how-to-treat-it/new/#new |

Born Efunporoye Osuntinubu Olumosa around 1805 in Ojokodo, Egbaland — Her mother’s name was Njieddee. After her first husband died, leaving her with two sons, she took to business and succeeded before marrying Prince Adele Ajosun In 1833, which resulted in her moving to Agbadarigi (Badagry), Lagos amid claims that she seduces men with charms. Sadly, she lost two sons to malaria while in Badagry — a famed slave port in Nigeria that transported over 550,000 slaves across the Atlantic. While her husband returned home in 1835, she stayed back and prospered through her newfound status. By this time, she dealt in arms, ammunition, tobacco, salt and most importantly, she became a slave trader. After Oba Ajose died, she used her influence to install Oluwole , the Prince as King, despite the circumstances and married her husband’s military strategist, Yesufu Bada . Slave Trade By this time, Pulse reports that her, “ continued to grow her business and created a monopoly in the palm oil business and in slave trade well. The ammunition she got from selling slaves were used in the Yoruba wars of 1840s and 1850s. Her business acumen in this area made her very rich and powerful. ” Just as this was happening, she established Palm Wine trading routes with Brazil , Portugal and Europe which opened trading opportunities with the British for slaves. Reports however exists that she couldn't distinguish between Nigerian and foreign slaves. Upon the sudden death of her son, Oluwole, she again made her brother-in-law, Akintoye to become King of Lagos to whom she became the close ally. Akintoye in turn rewarded her with an incredible status in real estate and influence for her business. She however contacted trouble when she wanted to stop slave trade after she learned of their torture and sufferings aboard slave ships and in plantations. Exile and Slavery Abolition In May, 1856, she challenged the power of British Consul, Benjamin Campbell while rooting against the British government and their rule. He retaliated by confronting her with gunboats to exile her from Lagos. Of her later years, she “moved to Abeokuta where she traded in firearms and gunpowder being a major supplier during the war against Dahomey. Through her political influence and power, Madam Efunroye was able to get many traditional rulers including Oba Akintoye to sign documents that ended Africans selling other Africans to the Europeans .” She later also flourished in her coconut oil business, as news of her witchcraft spread far and wide. However, she was named ‘Iyalode of Lagos ’ which roughly translates to, “ Women leader”, an influential post that belonged in the king's inner circle. While rumours swirled that she continued slavery till her death, she died in Abeokuta in 1887. Tinubu square is named after her. https://www.nigerialog.com/culture/how-iconic-yoruba-merchant-aided-abolishment-of-slavery-in-1800s/new/#new
