Christianity EtcWhy More Women Go To Church Than Men by gideonjeta(op): 1:51am On May 29, 2018
In the last two decade, there has been a shift in the attendance demographics of churchgoers. More interesting is the unbalanced attendance in relation to the gender of churchgoers.

Nigerians are known to be very religious people and happenings have shown that more women go to church than men.

Before the advent of Pentecostal churches, sitting arrangements in churches were very clearly demarcated by gender with the male gender taking the front seats.

However, the narrative has changed with more women attending church services than men while some even take to the pulpit to lead services.

In a report by Uganda based platform, East African, while the number of women coming to church started increasing, the number of men that attend church services started declining.

And as the women started taking more seats than men, the sitting arrangement no longer seemed necessary.

Women relate better with others
A research by Gallup says one of the reasons more women go to church than men is that women tend to be more open about sharing personal problems.

The research also revealed that women are more relational than men. The research also shows that a higher proportion of women than men say they have a best friend in their congregation. Again, women were found to lean toward an empirical rather than a rational basis for faith than men.

Women help build the faith in the family
The Economist, in a 2016 report, said women are more likely to believe in and practice a religion than men are.

The report further showed that 83.4% of women identify with a faith while 79.9% of men do so across the globe. But in America, 60% of women see religion as very significant in their lives while only 47% of men do.

The Economist report further posited that women have more staying power, including in times of repression. Under regimes which aim to abolish all external signs of religion, women can discreetly transmit the faith to their progeny.

Continuing, the report says another reason is that women often lead the way in making the religious switch, hoping their families will follow. And this is particularly true of the Pentecostal churches which have gained ground at the expense of orthodox churches.

Women are more in touch with their emotions
Giving reasons for this occurrence in churches, a vox pop conducted revealed that more women are in touch with their emotions.

“I agree more women are going to church than men. I think because women are more in touch with their emotions,” a young and upwardly mobile lady says.

Some women are seeking partners
Another single lady who insists her opinion shouldn’t be treated as a fact said: “I believe more women go to church than men because single ladies are probably seeking a relationship that will eventually lead to marriage and where best to find such relationship other than God’s vineyard.”

Women have more problems than men
The East African report gives reasons for the influx of women in the church as women having far more problems than men and so need God more.

The report further said women naturally feel one of their major duties is to be the prayer warrior of the home and since they pray for the men more, they tend to attend more church activities than the men.

Women enjoy showing off
A young telecommunication engineer feels that aside from seeking a man to wed in church, some single ladies and even older married women tend to use the activities in the church to flaunt their success or husbands’ wealth.

RomanceWhy You Shouldn't Enter A Relationship You Can't Afford by gideonjeta(op): 1:32am On May 29, 2018
You need money as much as you need emotional maturity and intelligence in a relationship and until you can afford these, you probably shouldn't be dating.
Transactional relationships
You must have heard people say there's no romance without finance, and that when you have no money, you have no honey. his is simply because deep down, most relationships are still transactional in nature.

That is to say, you stand a very high chance of getting someone to love you when you are financially OK. If you are not, all your abundance of emotions and good traits may just be a waste.

Yes it’s crazy and of course, it’s sad. Although some social change is seemingly being orchestrated via social media discourse, it seems that it'll take a very long while to completely [or even significantly] overhaul a belief system that has existed for a long, long time in almost every culture and nationality you can think about, although in varying degrees.

Apart from the fact that relationships are largely transactional in these parts, another truth that every guy would need to wrap their heads around is that there is no relationship that’s free.

Relationships are not meant to solely be about what money can buy, they are not supposed to bleed you dry and they are not meant to wreck your credit but you cannot do love in 2018 [or anytime in recent memory] without having to spending money, whether you are a man or a woman.

No relationship can't do without money
Love, even in its purest, truest and most genuine form is hinged on sharing and giving gifts and spending quality time on dates among other things. And there is no way you are going to do these without spending.

Whenever the operation of money in relationships and marriages is spoken of these days, a lot of attention is paid on women and how they need to chip in more regularly and spend money on men, too.

That conversation is largely triggered by the commonness of transactional relationships as mentioned above, and the need to reduce or completely phase out its occurrences.

However, taking away the transactional nature of relationships will still not excuse you, man, from spending on your woman. Neither will it excuse you, woman, from doing the same.

And you need to do so gladly, happily and freely without being asked to. Random gifts for her, especially if her love language is getting gifts; occasionally making a grand show of your love to her and basically just spoiling her as your financial stengths permit.

This is why you should consider not pursuing a relationship when you have no source of income. Really, love is a quite difficult to prove when you’re very broke.

In this same vein, it should also be stated that dating within your financial bracket is a thing and every guy needs to acknowledge this. Date someone that won’t require you over-flex your financial muscle.

You also need to date someone who strives for financial freedom and pursues financial success of her own.

Such women hardly feel entitled to your money and would relate to your money with an appreciation of your effort instead of a misplaced sense of entitlement.

FashionFive Skincare Tips For Kids by gideonjeta(op): 2:10am On May 28, 2018
Children have soft , pliable skin which makes their skin prone to absorbing environmental pollutants and the ravages of sun and wind . Protecting their tender skin is very important for their health and to guarantee that they will grow up with great skin .

Use gentle products
Children need a gentle hand in everything, including their skincare routine . Use a soft sponge for bathing and a mild toilet soap like Johnson ’s or Cussons soap to get rid of those pesky germs.
Use mild moisturisers , especially products like Johnson ’s baby oil , that contain olive oil and shea butter . Heavy -handed products will strip their delicate skin of beneficial microorganisms that help them to develop immunity and resistance to infections. It can also scar or burn their tender skin .

Balanced diet
Children who are properly nourished glow with health . They need balanced meals to feed their rapidly growing and regenerating cells . Make sure they eat fish , green vegetables , iron , calcium and other essential nutrients to feed their outsides from the inside. Resist the urge to let them eat junk food . They may not like to eat all their veggies , but mummy and daddy know best after all .

Sleep
The eight to 10 hours of sleep mandated for children is necessary . Encourage them to take naps in the middle of the day and get a full night’s sleep . Rested skin is beautiful skin and proper rest helps revitalise and regenerate cells .

FamilyChildren’s Day Celebration: The Many Challenges Of Nigerian Children by gideonjeta(op): 4:15am On May 27, 2018
On November 20 , 1989 , the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child ( CRC ) , whilst the OAU Assembly of Heads of States and Governments adopted the African Union Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child ( CRCW ) in July 1990 .Nigeria signed both International Instruments and had ratified them in 1991 and 2000 respectively . Both protocols reflect children as human beings and as subjects of their own rights . The Convention on the Rights of the Child ( CRC ) outlines the human rights to be respected and protected for every child under 18 years and requires that these rights be implemented .

Against this background , a draft of the Child Rights Bill aimed at principally enacting into Law in Nigeria the principles enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the AU Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child was prepared in the early 90 s. But it is only after about 10 years with several Heads of Government and heated debates by the lawmakers that the Bill was eventually passed into Law by the National Assembly in July 2003 .

It was assented to by the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in September 2003, and promulgated as the Child Rights Act 2003. The Act is a legal document that sets out the rights and responsibilities of a child in Nigeria and provides for a system of child justice administration .With these developments, it is expected and mandatory that Nigerian children are well protected and a breach of such act attracts a punishment to the offenders . But the question is, even in these states where the bill has been passed , to what extent are children’s rights being protected and enforced ?

This is the question begging for answer in the face of enormity of challenges confronting Nigerian children on a daily basis . Apart from the privileged ones, majority of Nigerian children are being faced with the problems of living on the streets, communal conflicts , deprivation , drug abuse , human trafficking , weaknesses of the juvenile justice system , child abuse, rape , violence poverty and many other social vices . According to a 2014 survey by the National Population Commission, with support from UNICEF and the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, six out of 10 Nigerian children experience at least one of these forms of violence before they reach the age of 18 .

With this , it is obvious that it is not yet uhuru for Nigerian children even with passage of the Child Rights Acts being implemented by some states .But so shocking is the discovery that majority of Nigerian children do not even know what their rights are .

HealthFood And Drinks To Indulge Or Avoid During Ramadan by gideonjeta(op): 3:59am On May 27, 2018
Muslims all over the world are fasting daily because it is the Holy month of Ramadan , where they eat at pre - dawn ( Suhoor ) , abstain from eating during the day and break their fast at sunset with a meal called Iftar . These tips will help with knowing what kind of meals to eat , which to avoid, and general health practices.
. Before fasting , consult your doctor especially if you have a pre -existing medical condition like : Type 2 diabetes , kidney diseases, hypoglycaemia, diabetic ketoacidosis , hyperglycaemia or you are pregnant . It’s best to be safe.

Change your exercise routine due to the changes in your dietary routine . Light to moderate activities is advised . High intensity workout may need to be on hold during the fasting period. However , if you have to exercise , a better time to do so is in the evenings just before Iftar .

Do not over eat to compensate for meal times that were lost , do not double the portions because it can affect your metabolism . Fasting is a great time to maintain a healthy weight and overeating definitely will sabotage that .

Eat gradually and set a good pace while breaking your fast . It is advisable to think about your stomach as a car engine that has been dormant for a while ; to restart it would need a bit of warming before driving . The digestive system is the same : start by hydrating with water , then some dates , a light soup or snack before your main meal .

Meal Planning and meal prepping while fasting is extremely important because the frequency and amount of food you eat daily is reduced so whatever you eat has to contain essential nutrients that can refuel and sustain you. If you do not meal plan ahead of time , you are likely to eat the wrong kind of foods . After breaking your fast , prepare your ingredients ahead of time for your next meal so that putting it together will be easier .

The first thing to do after breaking your fast is to replenish by drinking fluids, preferably water . Other fluids like freshly squeezed fruits and milk are also advisable . Drink about 1 to 2 glasses of fluid before eating your meal and you need at least 10 glasses of water daily so try to drink more water between Iftar and Suhoor to make up for lost time .

Eat meals that can provide energy to last till the next meal , especially at Suhoor . This meal has to contain complex carbohydrates because they take longer to digest that means you will be filled up for longer and they contain more nutrients. Food like beans , vegetables , whole grains ( Quinoa , brown rice , whole wheat pasta) , potatoes contain complex carbohydrates . You can eat low fat dairy products with your meal and some healthy unsaturated fats like avocado, unsalted nuts , salmon

Traditionally , Iftar starts with dates and there ’s a good reason why people break their fasts with dates . Dates are known to be a nutritious source of natural sugar they instantly refuel your body with much needed energy . If you get occasional headaches especially towards the end of the day while fasting , it may be caused by low blood sugar , and one way to balance sugar level is by eating dates , at least two.

Avoid eating fried or oily foods while fasting ( no matter how tempting ) because fried foods make you dehydrated quickly . They might be tempting , but try avoid them completely or reduce intake .

If you love coffee try to cut it out completely or reduce the amount you consume if you cannot cut it off. This is because coffee has caffeine , which can lead to insomnia and restlessness if you take a lot of it. In addition , drinking coffee does not hydrate and keeps you longing for water the whole day . Also , reduce or totally cut out drinking tea during Suhoor as this will cause you to urinate frequently and consequently get dehydrated .

Eat hydrating vegetables like cucumbers , lettuce , and other vegetables are high in fibre and are hydrating . It will help you cool off, rehydrate, help reduce constipation and it’s great for your skin !

Stay away from Salty food ( salted nuts, salted crisps , chips etc.) because they cause your sodium levels to fluctuate and this can make you feel thirsty during fasting . Salty foods can make your body retain water and make you feel bloated. Also , watch your intake of processed food .

Nuts are great during fasting especially almonds because they contain good fats and eating nuts can give you the feeling of satisfaction , which in turn reduces the need to excessively indulge yourself .

Romance7 Things You Should Be Telling Her Other Than 'i Love You by gideonjeta(op): 3:38am On May 27, 2018
We don’t want to downplay the importance of those three little words that two weeks or two years into a relationship still have the power to make your heart skip a beat. But while knowing how to say “I love you” at the right time is essential, so are other phrases, each with their own positive ripple effects in your relationship.

Here’s how to tell a girl you love her, all while uttering these phrases she is dying to hear.

1. “You can do it.”

Perhaps one of the most important roles a partner plays in our lives is cheerleader. So whether you’re ready to tap out and leave unswallowed that last delicious bite of gelato or preparing to lead a huge work project solo, it’s time for your partner to break out the pom-poms and cheer you on.

2. “I’m proud of you.”

When you finish that last bite of a healthy salad instead of your usual doughnut or kick butt at your work project, the best thing your man can do is swell with pride and express just how he thinks you rock. Knowing you impressed yourself is great in-and-of itself, but blowing his mind is a new level of awesome.

3. “You’re beautiful.”

We’ve all been the recipients of insincere compliments, and because of that, too often this phrase only elicits an eye roll. But there’s nothing like the feeling we get when a man we love drops this doozy as we wake up, our unwashed mascara smudged along our puffy eyes — and knowing he means it.

4. “I appreciate you.”

We take out the trash because that’s what you do when it’s full. We fold their socks into pairs because we can’t stand the thought of another stray, lonely argyle without its mate. It’s nothing special — and it’s certainly not about recognition.

But a man can turn the mundane into something more when he recognizes our acts of service are acts of love.

5. “Let me take you on a date.”

Routine is the silent killer of passion, people. So when a man wants to break free of binge-watching Netflix and take you out for a night on the town — or even for a candlelit, home-cooked meal on your patio — he’s saying he wants to keep the spark alive and roaring.

FashionIf You Wear Makeup Everyday, Don’t Forget To Do These Things by gideonjeta(op): 2:15am On May 26, 2018
if you rock your makeup everyday (we see you 9-5 champs) then you better get in here. You can thank us later.
Wearing makeup everyday means one thing, there’s a higher chance of your pores getting clogged and skin more prone to blemishes but then we don’t want that! We sure want to eat our beauty cake and have it too so why can’t a lady beat her face and have flawless skin at the same time? Thankfully we can!

Wearing a fully done face everyday without properly taking off the products cause the skin to appear dull, breakouts/acne and so on meaning attention has to be paid to it.

How do you cater to the skin if you can’t do without your daily ‘game face’? We’ve got you covered.

Cleansing skin deep
Deep cleansing the skin is a sure way to keep it blemish free. After wiping your face at night, use a deep cleaning astringent to totally get rid of those bits soap and wash can’t reach. Your skin instantly feels renewed and clean! This keeps your skin taut and pores closed. Never skip this step if you beat your face everyday!

Exfoliate and exfoliate some more
We can’t stress how important it is to remove dead skin to reveal new and baby soft ones. Exfoliating often gets the skin brighter and healthier. You don’t want to clog the skin with dead ones and it’s extremely important to exfoliate if you can’t do without your daily beat.

Facials
Facials are not luxury they are in fact a way to care for the skin and they should be done periodically. Make sure to get your facials done by professionals who will make sure the right products et al that suit your skin type is what would be used.

Romance4 Ways To Keep Your Relationship Exciting by gideonjeta(op): 1:59am On May 24, 2018
Keeping your relationship exciting is a good way to ensure that things don’t get boring between you and your partner. Especially these days where many people suffer from a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out – yes, it’s actually a thing).
Everyone seems to be looking for the next best thing. Or perhaps, the next best person to date. But the truth is nobody is perfect. Everyone, including you has flaws. So instead of shopping around for another partner, let’s tell you how to keep things exciting in your current relationship.

1. Respect your priorities
The fast-paced lifestyle of today has motivated everyone to work towards achieving their individual goals. Build your relationship in such a manner that you respect each other’s space, time and decisions. Don’t force your partner to change his priorities to match yours. Everyone has their own path, and having the freedom to find it will keep you stronger together.

2. Be yourself
One of the keys to a successful relationship is to be real and be yourself. You shouldn’t be afraid of expressing your thoughts or emotions, being different or having an opinion. Mind you, saying what you feel lovingly is far more productive than shouting or screaming. A relationship is not only about staying true to your partner but also staying true to yourself.

3. Don’t try to change your partner
Why did you fall in love with your partner in the first place? If you changed him they won’t be that person anymore. Love is about compromise, acceptance and appreciation. You may dislike five things about your partner but focus on the 20 things you do like and love. A happy relationship includes making sure you and your partner take steps to embrace one another instead of trying to change each other.

4. Make him your best friend
Want to keep your relationship exciting?  Make your guy your best buddy. You may not have had the time to get to know each other as friends before you got into a relationship; so here’s your chance to be besties. You should experience new things together, share your fears and excitement and be totally real with one another. Being able to communicate what you are thinking and understanding what your partner is feeling, is the most magical part of a relationship.

Romance3 Things He Does When He’s Not Ready For Marriage by gideonjeta(op): 4:48am On May 23, 2018
There comes a time when you no longer date just for the fun of it; and let’s face it when the time comes, you’d want someone whose dating ambition matches yours.
Laidback, purposeless relationships and ‘dating to see where things lead’ will no longer appeal to you because you would have gotten to a mental space where you are prepared for something more serious, more intentional.
Unfortunately, being at that place does not mean your partner is, too. Your readiness will not automatically transmit to his. And even if you have been together for a bit, being prepared for that level of commitment won’t automatically translate to his preparedness.
To know that you and your partner are not on the same wavelength when it comes to commitment and readiness to settle down; to know that he’s not ready for marriage like you, here are the signs you will see.

1. Not eager to meet your friends and family
He hasn’t met your family or friends and he’s not eager to. If you were interested in marrying someone, wouldn’t you want to know who their friends and family are? So, If he doesn't want to attend your parents' anniversary party with you, then he probably isn't thinking of them as his future in-laws.

2. He dodges marriage discussions
Does he try to escape marriage discussions? Does he suddenly remember that he has errands to run and tasks to complete on his laptop whenever you try to steer the conversation to marriage and commitment? Well, he’s likely not ready for what you are going to suggest.
If he would rather be anywhere else but in that conversation every time you try to bring it up, best believe that unlike you, he’s not ready for it just yet.

3. He expressly says so
If he honestly says he’s not ready, that’s the ultimate signal of his reluctance to get into anything serious. It’d be ill-advised to try to force him or cajole him into it. If he’s willing and ready to settle down with you, he’ll be just as amped about the whole idea as you are.

RomanceFive Signs Your Partner's Ex Will Be A Problem In Your Relationship by gideonjeta(op): 2:31am On May 23, 2018
It’s okay to wonder if the relationship you have just entered into is going to wreck you emotionally.

Most often than not, the person you just started dating was with someone before you.

Their break-up could have been messy or possibly amicable, but regardless, some feelings just don’t die.

Here are a few signs to look out for to tell if your partner is not over their ex.

No rush to make it official

You’ve been casually but exclusively seeing this person for a couple months and you start to wonder if the relationship should become official.

But every time you suggest it, your partner finds a way to sweep it under the rug.

Labels may not be a big deal but you need it to know you’re (or not) wasting your time.

Always talking about him/her

In the most random situations, they always find a way to refer to the ex.

They always bring up a memory, story or an experience to remind you of the relationship they had before you.

They still talk and hang out

It’s perfectly normal for exes to remain friends or cordial at the very least.

But if your partner and an ex talk as much as you two do and they often hang out together without you, then there’s a problem.

They compare you to the ex

‘You didn’t put enough salt in the food. You know Ngozi was very good at cooking.’

‘You can’t change a flat tire? Paul was so good with his hands.’

If red flags could fly any higher, this is it.

Their relationship didn’t end badly

The relationship of your partner and an ex didn’t end on bad terms.

Maybe one of them had to relocate to a different county or they decided they had no future because their genotypes are not compatible.

It won’t be a long shot to say that feelings may still remain.

Nairaland General4 Uses Of Lemon You Have Not Thought Before by gideonjeta(op): 4:49pm On May 22, 2018
Lemons are a natural disinfectant, and they smell so refreshing and this is why they are used in most domestic chores. Here are some four uses of lemon.

1. Disinfecting wooden chopping board

Every so often, you need to deep-clean your cutting boards. Here's how you can do it naturally. Pour salt onto your board and rotate your lemon into it. Squeeze the lemon so the juice comes out. After you scrub it really well, let it sit for about five minutes and then rinse off.

2. Making a natural cleaning solution

Pour one cup of vinegar and one cup of water into a spray bottle. Then push lemon slices into your solution. Allow the solution to sit for a week or two so the lemons infuse with water and vinegar.

Then spray your solution to dust your shelves, clean your windows, and do anything else that requires a cleaning solution.

3. Cleaning microwave

You know after you reheat spaghetti or soup in the microwave, inevitably there will be tomato-sauce splatters and carrot chunks spewed all over. Every once in a while, you’ll think, "Oh, I’ll wipe the mess up later. I’m starving."

Cut a lemon in half, place it in a bowl of water, and stick the bowl in the microwave. Turn it on for about a minute or two. The steam of the lemon water will hydrate the crusty food, which will make it easier to wipe clean.

4. Disinfecting kitchen sink

Pour some salt into your sink. Then take half of a lemon and scrub the salt into the sink. Not only does the lemon helps remove the germs, but it also removes the water spots.

When you’re done, toss the lemon into the garbage disposal to clean the blades. The fresh lemon aroma emitting from the disposal is sure to be a pleasant change to the funk that sometimes exudes from it.

FoodAn Easy Way To Make Akara by gideonjeta(op): 2:12am On May 21, 2018
Akara ( beancakes ) is one of the most popular dishes that feature in most breakfasts in Nigeria . It is also seen as a reliable and nourishing street snack as sellers are found frying them at roadsides at various hours of the day . What is so special about akara is the fact that it is affordable to buy and to make.
We will be giving you simple steps on how to make akara below.

Ingredients
1 cup peeled beans
2 habanero peppers also known as chilli pepper, chopped
¼ cup water
Salt , to taste
½ medium onion , chopped
Vegetable oil , for frying

Method
1 . Blend the beans with ¼ cup water into a smooth paste .
2 . Pour the blended beans into a bowl and add chopped pepper and onions .
3 . Mix for five minutes with a whisk or mixer to allow air into the paste .
4 . Add salt just before frying the akara balls .
5 . Pour some oil , about two inches deep, into a deep pan on medium heat.
6 . When the oil is hot , scoop a cooking spoon of batter into the oil . Do not spread out the paste in the oil . Fry on each side until golden brown.
7 . Lift the akara balls with a slotted spoon , out of the pan of oil into a sieve.
8 . Repeat the process until everything is fried .
9 . Serve with bread , garri , ogi ( pap) , pepper sauce or fried yam .
Note: The shape of the akara can be affected by the thickness of the paste and how you fry it. The process of making akara may seem like rocket science but, with practice, you will get better.

Nairaland GeneralMeet Ladi Dosei Kwali, The Woman On 20 Naira Note(photo) by gideonjeta(op):
Many Nigerians are oblivious to the story of the woman whose picture adorns the back of 20 naira note they spend on a daily. At the back of the 20 naira note is Ladi Kwali’s picture, a celebrated potter who hailed from the northern part of Nigeria.

Ladi Kwali was born in the village of Kwali, which is located in the Gwari region of present day Abuja, where pottery was indigenous female tradition.

Kwali who grew up in a family in which womenfolk made pots for a living, learnt to make pottery as a child from her aunt.

Kwali's younger brother, Mallam Mekaniki Kyebese, said: “Even in the early years of pottery making, Ladi Kwali excelled in the crafts and her wares were often sold even before they were taken to the markets”

She produced pottery pieces that were influenced by the Gbagyi tradition during her first professional years.

With the help of a famous English studio potter, Michael Cardew, Kwali came to international prominence for her talents in the 1950s. Cardew, who was appointed to the post of pottery officer in the department of commerce and industry in 1951, launched the Abuja Pottery Training Centre along with Kwali in 1952 and spent the following fifteen years teaching and learning from Nigerian potters.

Kwali would later join the Abuja pottery and become its first female potter. She later became an instructor

Ladi’s pots were noted for their beauty of form and decoration. The Emir of Abuja, Alhaji Suleiman Barau acquired several pots made by Ladi. In the palace of the Emir was where Michael Cardew saw Ladi’s work in 1950. Ladi Kwali would later become prominent after this discovery by Cardew

Her pots became art objects and were also featured in international exhibitions of Abuja pottery organised by Cardew in 1958, 1959 and 1962.

Her pottery was also displayed during Nigeria’s independence celebrations in 1960.

Kwali and Cardew toured America in 1972, and at the Berkeley Galleries in London, her works was shown to great acclaim.

Her works - glazed dishes, bowls and beakers, which she created with stylised animal sgraffito, were the works for which she was best known. These works were a great asset in the popularity of Abuja pottery beyond the shores of Africa.

Below is the list of her awards and achievements:

Kwali had been honoured in many ways.
In 1962, she was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire).
In 1977, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria awarded her an honorary doctoral degree.
The Nigerian government awarded her with highest national honour for academic achievement, Nigerian National Order of Merit Award.
In 1981, she also received the national honour of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
A major street in Abuja is named after her. The street is called Ladi Kwali road.
The Abuja Pottery was renamed the Ladi Kwali Pottery in the early 1980s.
Her picture adorned the back of the Nigerian 20 naira note, making her the first Nigerian woman to be on a naira note.
After Cardew died the previous year, Kwali died on August 12, 1984 at the age of 59 in Minna.

HealthStay Healthy This Ramadan With These 10 Tips by gideonjeta(op): 12:40pm On May 18, 2018
When observing Ramadan , it is important , especially for busy professionals , to maintain healthy, nutritious eating habits . The ninth month in the Islamic calendar , Ramadan , is a month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide .
Here are ten tips to help you stay fit and healthy during this holy month:

1 . Don ’ t skip ‘ sahur ’
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day . In the same way , the meal that is eaten before dawn , sahur, is essential during Ramadan . The meal fuels your body and helps your body stay hydrated until your next meal at ‘ iftar ’. It will also keep you from overeating when you break your fast at sunset.

2 . Balanced meals only
Let your meal at sahur be well -balanced . It should contain complex , slow -releasing carbohydrates like oats , wheat or lentils that will give you a feeling of fullness for the rest of the day and keep your blood sugar steady. The meal should also be high in fibre ( cereals , fruits and vegetables ) , and proteins ( eggs , meat , yoghurt and cheese ) to keep you hydrated and energised throughout the day .

3 . Don ’ t overindulge
It is very tempting to overindulge in all the foods you may have been craving during the day , but it is important to break your fast slowly. Start with some water and a few dates , which are a good source of energy for the body and help secrete digestive enzymes in preparation for your main meal , which you can eat after waiting a while . Let your main meal contain a lot of vegetables , proteins and carbohydrates . Avoid fats and heavy oils . Make sure you eat your meal slowly to give your body time to digest the food .

4 . Soups are good !
Thin soups should be a regular food on your iftar meals . They are easy to make, warm and soothing to the stomach. They are also a great source of fluids, vitamins and minerals. You can add colourful vegetables like carrots, tomatoes , bell peppers and fresh herbs . Also , limit the amount of salt and oil you use to prepare them .

5 . Stay hydrated
Drink a lot of fluids between the period of iftar and suhoor . This will help you stay hydrated during your fast . Although milk , soup and juices are sources of fluids , water is the best choice . Make sure to drink at least 8 cups of water every day and consume other drinks in moderation .

SportsAfricans Tip Super Eagles To Break World Cup Jinx In Russia by gideonjeta(op): 12:07pm On May 18, 2018
No African country has won the FIFA World Cup, which is in its 21 st edition this year , but many pundits from the continent believe this is the time to break the jinx. And which team is better suited for the task than the Super Eagles .
A continent wide survey by Kenya -based PR agency Geopoll , client of African Laughter , tips Nigeria to become the first African country to win the trophy at the Russia 2018 World Cup slated to kick off next month .
The poll made available to The Guardian featured 2 ,400 unique football fans from six countries, including Tanzania , Kenya , Ghana, Nigeria , South Africa and Senegal .
In the polls , Nigeria has the highest to win vote with 31 per cent indicating that they would be rooting for the Super Eagles . Senegal follows closely with 20 per cent, while Egypt earned 23 per cent in the polls .
Geopoll noted that the fans were swayed by the outstanding performance of the Super Eagles during the African qualifiers , adding that 44 per cent of Nigerian fans are optimistic the Eagles would make history in Russia as the first African country to win the World Cup.
Among the other African flag bearers , the survey indicates that 49 per cent of Senegalese fans indicate that the Taranga Lions would win the Mundial , just as Brazil was chosen by African respondents to win the competition .
The agency also established that 86 per cent of Africans across South Africa , Nigeria , Kenya , Senegal , and Tanzania plan on watching this year ’s World Cup in Russia, compared to 71 per cent who watched some of the matches in 2014.
They posited that over 600 million fans are expected to watch the World Cup with Ghanaian men getting the highest vote of 99 per cent to watch the world football fiesta .
This , the outfit , said demonstrates the high level of interest in the tournament and the strength of the World Cup brand.
65 per cent of the Nigerians interviewed mentioned that they will be watching the World Cup from home , while those who were going to watch the games outdoors, at a friend ’s place , in the office , restaurants / clubs and in other places accounted for 14 per cent , 10 per cent, six per cent, three per cent and one per cent respectively .
The Geopoll result also disclosed that football viewership has shifted radically in Africa in recent years from male dominated stadium and clubs to now large number of female fans , in a growth that commentators have attributed to changing life styles.
Geopoll said the large number of African respondents in the polls revealed that the continent ’s fans see it as a patriotic duty to support their fans , adding that the 2018 World Cup, which is the first in Africa on media and audience services , offers data insight on its viewership .
Meanwhile, former Super Eagles player , Mutiu Adepoju has urged the national team to avoid complacency and work hard to achieve its potentials .
“The Eagles have a bright chance to win the World cup . But for me they should approach every game as it comes . Tipping them to win the World Cup is capable of putting the team under pressure .
They should not allow the fans ’ praises to get into their heads to avoid complacency in their games . They need to give their best in every game to move ahead in the world championship . Taking each game as it comes would put them in good stead in Russia,” he said .

CrimeOgun Proprietor, Principal Tie Pupils To ‘crosses’ For Lateness by gideonjeta(op): 2:25am On May 17, 2018
The Ogun State Police Command on Wednesday arrested the proprietor and principal of Metorite Standard School, Ayetoro, for allegedly tying up two pupils of the school to ‘crosses’ and flogging them with a horsewhip.

The proprietor, Afolayan Joseph, and the yet-to-be-identified principal were said to have tied the pupils for allegedly coming late to school.

It was learnt that a policeman, identified only as Livinus, who witnessed the incident and cautioned the men, was beaten up.

Joined by other residents, the policeman was said to have succeeded in getting the suspects arrested.

It was learnt that the suspects were taken to the Itele Police Station.

The policeman, who is attached to the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit, said that the pupils were tied to the wooden crosses in the open.

He said, “I was going to work this morning (Wednesday) when I saw some cars parked by the roadside. I discovered that it was because of some pupils that were tied to crosses. When I saw it, I parked and went to meet the proprietor of the school. I introduced myself as a policeman and told him to untie the pupils. He refused, saying there was nothing anybody could tell him that would make him to release them.

“When I tried to untie the pupils, the proprietor and his teachers beat me up. Before I returned from picking handcuffs from my car, they had grabbed a friend who was with me, Omaje iremi, and beaten him up with a horsewhip.

“I entered the school – with the help of some neighbours who gathered around – to arrest him, but he refused to follow me. I then called the Divisional Police Officer of the Itele Police Station and he sent some policemen to the school, who took everybody to the station.”

The DPO of Itele Police Station, who declined to give his name, said the proprietor did not like the policeman’s attempt to correct him.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the arrests of the two men, as well as a teacher in the school.

He said, “It is a barbaric incident because I don’t see any offence that a secondary school pupil will commit that will make someone to tie him or her and be flogging them in public.

“They have been arrested and will be taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

“The act is no longer a corrective measure; it is a barbaric act and it will not be allowed in this 21st century.

EventsWedding Menu: 5 Affordable Finger Foods You Can Serve At Your Wedding by gideonjeta(op): 1:58am On May 17, 2018
Wedding menu is one of the most difficult decisions to make for any couple. There is always a lot of back and forth with the caterers on what else to serve to guests apart from Jolly rice (of course, you already know jolly is a must). Here are other cost effective side dishes you can try.
These are the lifesavers at any happening Owambe. Please note that they are not cheap. They can be affordable if you find an affordable caterer.

Good food, great MC, fantastic band and conducive atmosphere are the basics for an amazing wedding reception. While we know party jolly is almost inevitable, selecting an interesting appetiser menu that won’t break the bank can definitely be a challenge.

Here are 5 affordable finger foods you can explore.
1. Spring Rolls
Serve spring rolls, samosa and any other side dish you’ll like to serve together in a plate or two per table depending on the number of people per table and how big the plate is.

2. Puff Puff
This is everybody’s favourite in any “small chops” pack and the cheapest to make. The trick is to serve it hot so people can eat a lot of it and be full before you serve the Main dish.

3. Samosa
A samosa is a fried or baked dish with a savoury filling, such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, lentils, macaroni, noodles, cheese,

4. Mosa
Plantain Mosa is overripe plantains mashed and mixed with other ingredients then deep-fried in vegetable oil. It’s a staple in every Nigerian wedding these days.

5. Asun
It is barbecued goat meat with lots of pepper. You can size a plate per table not individually to save cost.

RomanceFive Things You Should Not Do After A Breakup by gideonjeta(op): 1:32am On May 17, 2018
Breakups are tough . First comes the realisation that you are no longer in a relationship , then there comes the agonising “what to do next ” question. The feeling gets easier over time but, until then , here are some common mistakes that newly -single people should avoid making.

1 . Don ’ t hold it in
You may experience grief and other painful feelings, but holding it in is more self - destructive than productive. Open up about your feelings to your friends or family . Write about it, cry , exercise or find a good shrink.

2 . Do not get dramatic
Yes, it hurts , but your life is not over . Look on the bright side : this is a new opportunity to bring excitement and newness to your life . Find new activities and people to enrich your life or find something that interests you to get into .

3 . Don ’ t assign blame
“It’s not me , it’s him. ” Instead of putting blame on your ex, find other things to say . Try “we saw things differently ” or “we had a good time , but things changed ”. Not assigning blame , even if you feel they were at fault will help you in your healing process and get through the difficult situation more easily .

4 . Analyse the breakup
It doesn ’t matter if you broke up with your ex or they did the breaking up. You had a hand in the dissolution of your relationship. Analyse what didn ’t work in the relationship and accept your part in it so that you can avoid those mistakes with your next love . Trust your decision to end it and keep going.

5 . Don ’ t do nothing
Do something productive and useful . This will take over your time and keep you from obsessing over your ex. Try out something you have always wanted to do. Take up the hobby or sport you have always admired or volunteer somewhere . Just do something !

Travel4 Strange Places In Africa by gideonjeta(op): 2:10am On May 16, 2018
Explore four strange places in Africa because the dark continent has its own fair share of strange places.
From the eye of Africa to an abandoned cinema in the dessert and an underwater waterfall, here are four interesting places to see in Africa.

1. Outdoor Abandoned Cinema, Egypt
Somewhere in Egypt at the foot of a desert mountain range, sits a cinema completely out of place. Visitors would be surprised to see hundreds of seats for an outdoor movie theatre. It is believed that the theatre was built by a man from France. However, the locals didn’t like the idea and destroyed the generator. Not a single movie was ever screened there.

Now, it lies in the middle of a desert abandoned and forgotten.

2. Sahara El Beyda, Egypt
Egypt appears on this list again because of a rare phenomenon. Sahara el Beyda or the white desert used to be sea-bed millions of years ago.

Slowly the water level dropped and all manner of life left with the decline. What was left are giant pieces of chalk rock with a unique admirable shape.

3. Eye Of Africa
Also known as the Richat Structure, it is a blue circle in the sands of the Sahara Desert and has become a landmark for astronauts. To this day, scientists are puzzled by what created this strange landmark.

However, there are several theories about how the Eye of Africa came to be.

4. Underwater Waterfall, Mauritius
Mauritius, an island off the southeast coast of Africa gives off the illusion of an underwater waterfall at the southwestern tip. The deceiving impression is created due to the runoff sand and silt deposits and is clearly seen in aerial shots.

Travel5 Places To See In Nigeria Before They Disappear by gideonjeta(op): 12:03pm On May 15, 2018
Nigeria has so many heritage sites and monuments left to ruin due to the absence of infrastructure.
Some of these places are amazing and it’s just sad that one day these places might just cease to exist.

Thanks to man-made activities, global warming and natural disasters, these places are on the brink of being wiped off.

Visit these places before they disappear:

1. Benin Iya / Sungbo's Eredo

Sungbo's Eredo is a 6500 kilometres square cluster of community earthworks that run for about 16,000kilometers in the Benin rainforest zone. The core of this cluster consists of tightly packed small settlement enclosures with narrow cordons sanitaires (no-man's-lands), and date back to about the C8th A.D. On the periphery, the earthworks have larger, wider-spaced primary enclosures (including that of Benin itself), much broader cordons sanitaires and date up to about the C15th A.D.

2. Niger Delta Mangroves
The Niger Delta is fringed by a deep belt of mangrove forest, which protects vast areas of freshwater swampland in the Inner Delta. The trees and roots provide rich habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna, much of which is only just beginning to be understood.

3. Kwiambana ruins
Kwiambana ruins lie on and around a twin-peaked granite mountain in what has been an inaccessible area of the Kwiambana Game Reserve. The well-preserved mud structures are enclosed by a five to seven-metre high bank and ditch which becomes a mud-block wall with loopholes where the circular town wall passes over bare rock and is a natural coursed rubble wall along with many other sections.

There are some low free-stone walls enclosing the steep hillside and several level sites where houses may have been constructed.

4. Oban Hills
The Oban Hills rainforest lies in the southern section of the Cross River National Park and adjoins the Korup National Park in Western Cameroon.

The steep-side hills are covered in ancient rainforest and serve as a crucial link between two sections of the Oban Hills.

5. Ancient Kano City Wall
Built between 1095 and 1134 by Sakri Gijimasu and completed in the 14th century, the Kano city wall tells the story of Kano in a nutshell.

The solid walls were constructed using mud and an ancient technique to fortify the city. In fact, parts of the wall are still standing till today.

PoliticsChaos Or Election: Which Way In 2019? by gideonjeta(op): 11:25am On May 15, 2018
The degree of political intrigues ahead of the 2019 general elections is rising on daily basis . It has compounded the myriad of problems confronting Nigeria to the extent that except the political class soft - pedaled and play according to rules patriotically and in civility , in the national interest , the cataclysm , which was predicted in 2015 , may just be around the corner . The contention for political office by largely people who seem to have no other business is adversely affecting the polity and the economy .
On the economic front , for instance , reports indicate that the heat and uncertainty of the 2019 general elections have rocked the stock market , making investors to lose a whopping N729 billions in three months of decline between February and April after the initial January rise triggered strong anticipations . This development , experts say , runs contrary to the general expectations of positive earnings in 2018 after the country apparently pulled out from a recession at the end of 2017.
Analysts say investors are apprehensive about the political risks associated with the 2019 elections . The investors , who are mostly foreigners , would prefer to sit on the fence and watch developments to avoid losing money. This unsavory scenario cuts across almost all facets of the economy . The implication is that the economy may be stagnated from now till May 29 , 2019, when the elections would have been concluded and a new government inaugurated . And, depending on who becomes president , things could change in the most unexpected manner .
The 2018 national budget , which is yet to be passed by the National Assembly ( NASS ) , may not make much difference even after it is passed because election year budgets are believed to be used to prosecute the election . Only a fraction will actually go into real budgetary spending . This is the Nigerian experience that is not expected to change in the present circumstance . The result is that the masses of the people are the losers . Poverty and suffering will increase as politicians play their dirty game without minding . So much so on the economic front .
But the real fear is the unprecedented insecurity and killings ravaging the country . How do we add political thuggry and hooliganism to the already bad situation where Boko Haram and herdsmen are massacring people daily across Nigeria with epicenter in the Northeast and the Middle Belt ? Would Nigeria survive the barrage of assaults on her ?
A closer look at the situation in 2015 and now will reveal the extent of imminent threat . The prediction , in 2015, by the U .S. Intelligence Unit that Nigeria would disintegrate was based on two contending forces at the time , namely, the challenge of the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan ’s PDP led Federal Government by the Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress ( APC ) opposition party. The disenchantment and frustration of the people against the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) cleared the coast for Buhari and the APC , whose mantra of change reinforced peoples ’ conviction that Buhari could be the Messiah that Nigeria needed to redeem a corruption -ridden polity . Consequently, Buhari had overwhelming support in the entire North and South -West with pockets of support in the South-East and South-South.
Today , all that has changed . The contention now is between the same Buhari and the APC and very powerful forces that have risen to unseat him and his party . Whereas , the PDP has fallen short of its erstwhile political muscle to tackle Buhari and the APC that now seem to have the upper hand , some critical forces that supported and boosted Buhari ’s chances in 2015 are no longer there .
For instance , the critical support given to Buhari and the APC by former president Olusegun Obasanjo , former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and a host of other political juggernauts are no longer there . The exit of Atiku Abubakar from the APC and his intention to contest as president in 2019 under the PDP has split the north , meaning that the entire north can no longer be said to be solely for Buhari . Besides , some powerful politicians in the North appear to be disgruntled against the APC .
The same scenario is playing out in the South-West . Obasanjo, who in 2015 dramatically pulled out of the PDP , the party under which he was president for eight years , and declared Buhari as the next president even before the election has , once again , dramatically , withdrawn his support for Buhari . And he didn ’ t stop there .
As early as January, 2018, Obasanjo wrote a scathing letter against president Buhari accusing him of mismanaging the economy and followed it by floating a powerful political movement he christened “Third Force ,” whose sole aim is to unseat Buhari and the APC in 2019. The political coalition has morphed quickly and adopted the African Democratic Congress ( ADC ) as a political party .
Latest reports indicate that Obasanjo’s ADC, PDP and 36 other political parties are working to form a formidable alliance to remove Buhari . These parties believe that the same way a coalition of parties joined forces in 2015 to uproot Jonathan and the PDP , the same could happen to the APC if they could come together to confront the incumbent. The implication is that the unflinching support the APC got from the South- West in 2015 may be divided in 2019 .

FamilyHow Important Are Compliments? by gideonjeta(op): 1:06am On May 14, 2018
Being confident means being aware of your achievements and full potentials without waiting for others to tell you who you are or all you are capable of. However, no matter how confident you are, the compliments of others especially those close to you matter. There are days that you might feel unsure or weak and someone says something nice and that somehow lifts your spirit.

Blushing when someone says something nice to you is not a sign of weakness, the human nature is one that values being seen and appreciated. Some women admit that they find a compliment more endearing when it comes from a fellow woman; some believe in that because they have the belief that a compliment coming from a fellow woman is a bit more pure and genuine.
