Some Peoples Democratic Party’s senators on Monday started impeachment moves against President Goodluck Jonathan over what they described as the high level of impunity and corruption allegedly being condoned by his administration.

Investigations by our correspondent revealed that the PDP senators had started compiling impeachable offences against the President.

An All Progressives Congress member of the Senate, who confided the development in our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, explained that his aggrieved PDP colleagues in the upper chamber had started reaching out to the opposition senators.

He said, “I was personally consulted this evening over the issue and I also cross-checked from my colleagues who also told me that they had been contacted.

“The grouse of the lawmakers, according to the person that contacted me, was that Jonathan’s handling of the last week Thursday’s invasion of the National Assembly by the police was carelessly handled by the Jonathan administration.

“From the look of things, the proceedings will start on Tuesday because some signatures had been collected already.”

Another senator from the PDP, who also craved anonymity, also confirmed the development to our correspondent stating that it was certain that the President was not capable of superintending over a free and fair election in 2015.

He said, “Our President is not in charge. We have seen that he had allowed the governors to hijack powers from him. He is just like a puppet and the earlier we act fast, the better for us.”

Meanwhile, opposition members in the Senate have threatened to raise the issue of the last Thursday’s invasion of the National Assembly by the security operatives, when the Senate resumes plenary today (Tuesday).

The spokesperson for the group, who is also the member representing Ekiti Central on the platform of the APC, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, gave the hint in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Abuja.

Ojudu said his colleagues were very annoyed with the ways they were maltreated and molested by the policemen, who were deployed in the National Assembly on the orders of the Inspector – General of Police.

He said majority of his members were of the opinion that the IGP should not be allowed to enter into the chambers, but should be asked to resign for allegedly ridiculing the federal lawmakers who had done nothing wrong other than going to carry out their lawful legislative activities.

He said, “We (APC Senators) are holding a crucial meeting this (Monday) night to take a final decision on the matter because majority of us are really angry. Some are even of the opinion that we should demand the resignation or sacking of the IGP.

“I can assure you that the issue of the National Assembly invasion by the police would be raised when we resume sitting tomorrow (Tuesday ), but we are going to take a single position on the matter at our meeting tonight,” he added.

However, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, had in an interview with our correspondent, on Saturday, maintained that the Senate would not be thrown into any chaotic situation over the Thursday’s invasion of the National Assembly complex by security operatives.

He had admitted that the IGP would appear before the Senate but assured the public that the matter would be handled with maturity.

He had said, “The Senate will discuss the invasion of the National Assembly by security operatives when it reconvenes on Tuesday. Already we have invited the Inspector – General of Police to find out who gave the order for the harassment of federal lawmakers last Thursday.

“So, I do not anticipate any form of stormy session during our sitting next Tuesday. I can assure you that the Senate is made up of gentlemen and women who are very senior citizens of the Nigerian society.

“Therefore, you cannot expect the Senate to act, except in a decorous manner.”

Abaribe also said that the Senate would still go ahead with deliberations on the emergency rule in the three north-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe contrary to insinuations that the matter had ended since the period of emergency had lapsed.

He said, “We had invited the service chiefs and we will find out from them, the update on the insurgency situation in the north-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe so that we can address the issue of the state of emergency requested by President Goodluck Jonathan.”

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has said President Goodluck Jonathan “is supervising a highly corrupt government.”

He also claimed that “there is no democracy yet in Nigeria.”

The governor, who spoke in Abuja on Saturday, insisted that he had no personal quarrel with President Jonathan, adding that if governance could be separated from the President, he (Jonathan) “remains a good man.”

He, however, regretted that the President “is supervising a highly corrupt government.”

He described the form of government being practised in Nigeria today as diarchy.

While reacting to the invasion of the National Assembly by the police on Thursday, Amaechi described the action as uncivilised.

He said the actions of the police in recent times had shown that they had been pocketed by the Presidency and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.

He said, “We don’t have democracy in Nigeria yet. What we have is diarchy. We don’t have a democracy. Diarchy is dictatorship. The Federal Government has appropriated the police as its personal property. The FG has taken over the police. See the way the police took over the National Assembly. By law, the police have no power to invade the National Assembly and they have no power to stop the Speaker from going in or out of the National Assembly complex. But they don’t obey law.”

He insisted that his party, the All Progressives Congress, would not go to court if the PDP decided to rig the 2015 presidential elections.

Instead of going to court, he said the APC would form a parallel government.

He said, “What is the essence of going to court when the Federal Government don’t obey the law. That’s why the APC say we won’t go to the court any longer. If you rig us out, we would rig ourselves in; which means if you think you can rig us out in 2015, we will form our own government. We have met on that and we have agreed on that. We will instal our own government and there would be two governments.

“The only way to avoid a parallel government is to have a free and fair election. You can’t continue to use the police as if it is a private agency or company of the government.”

While saying that the Police in South Africa is currently investigating President Jacob Zuma, he wondered if the police in Nigeria would be allowed to play such a role in the country.

“Are you aware that the President of the South Africa is being probed by the police? Can that happen here? In this country, they slap judges. Seven members of a state (Ekiti) House of Assembly claimed they have sacked a Speaker,” he added.

On Boko Haram, the governor said it would be difficult to convince Nigerians that the Federal Government was not deliberately allowing the crisis to continue in order for it to decimate the votes that would come from the North-East in 2015.

The zone is considered to be a stronghold of the APC.

Amaechi said Nigerians knew the capability of their soldiers, who he said went to Liberia and liberated the country from the hands of the rebels only for them to be having problems dislodging a rag-tag army of insurgents in the country.

He said, “The Federal Government deliberately allowed the Boko Haram to overrun many villages in the North-East. If it is not a political agenda, why would the military not be able to chase away the rag-tag army of Boko Haram?

“They don’t want elections to hold in the zone so that there wouldn’t be election in the zone. If there is no election in the North-East, they believe that the APC would lose.

“If they are not afraid of the APC, let them restore law and order. The zone is in the hands of the APC. Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Yobe states are all APC states. The only state where it could be 50:50 is maybe Taraba State. Apart from this, other states in the zone have always voted for Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, one of our presidential hopefuls.”

The Edo State Government on Friday renamed the College of Education, Ekiadolor, recently upgraded to a university status, to Tayo Akpata University of Education in honour of a former Commissioner for Education in the defunct Bendel State, Chief Tayo Akpata.

Governor Oshiomhole made the announcement during the funeral service of the late elder statesman at the Central Baptist Church, Benin.

The governor explained that the state government’s decision was as a result of his (Akpata) contributions to the development of the state.

He said that the renaming of the university would serve as an inspiration to youths, whom he advised to emulate the virtues of the late Akpata, who was also a one-time Executive Secretary of the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund and the first Chairman of the National Youth Service Corps (Mid-West State) in 1975.

Oshiomhole said, “We feel the pain of the loss of our Elder Statesman, a man whose life symbolises the fighting spirit, the resourcefulness, the intellectual capacity of the Edo people. One who has shown that the average Edo person is not contented at looking after himself alone but often is willing to carry the burden of others.

“Often times, Nigerians talk of immortalizing people who are rich in naira. But the greatest wealth in my view is what contribution one has made to the development of his community and there is no question that Chief Tayo Akpata was a shining example of what we all can do individually to make a difference in our community.

“We have reflected and we arrived at a conclusion that the University of Education, Ekiadolor will now be renamed as Tayo Akpata University of Education, Ekiadolor. That way, our young ones will recognize that people are immortalized not because they feature in the list of Nigeria’s richest men or women but on account of their rich contributions and the role they play in the lives of very ordinary people.”

He also said, “In Akpata was a man who, even outside the shores of this country, was an activist. As a young man he was persuaded by the ideals of the Labour Party in Britain. He didn’t see himself as a foreigner who came for the specific purpose to learn and acquire knowledge but we had a young activist who identified with Labour Party and went out to mobilize and canvass for votes

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, on Friday, publicly accepted the All Progressives Congress presidential nomination form purchased for him by some members of the House.

The presentation took place about 5.09pm at Tambuwal’s residence in Maitama, Abuja.

The speaker gladly accepted the form amid cheers from the lawmakers, who were largely APC legislators.

However, after thanking them for considering him fit for the office of the President of Nigeria, Tambuwal said he would continue with his nationwide consultations on the issue.

He explained that he would give Nigerians his final position as soon as he had concluded the consultations.

Tambuwal stated, “I have accepted to collect this form.

“I will go back and conclude my consultations.

“When I conclude the consultations, I will give Nigerians my final position on this matter soonest.”

While thanking the lawmakers for the gesture, the speaker said it was a demonstration of “true love for the progress and unity of Nigeria.”

He recalled that in 2011, the same scenario played out when his colleagues in the House picked him to serve as their Speaker.

Tambuwal added that the decision paid off, giving him the opportunity to serve the country in a high office .

He added that it further positioned him to be counted worthy of a higher office.

Earlier, a lawmaker from Ebonyi State, Mr. Peter Edeh, presented the form to Tambuwal on behalf of his colleagues.

Members of the outlawed Boko Haram sect have, again, seized Chibok, the home of over 200 schoolgirls abducted by the insurgents in April.

The insurgents attacked and seized the town on Thursday evening, residents said.

The attackers have repeatedly targeted villages around Chibok over recent months.

A senator from Borno State, Ali Ndume, told the BBC Hausa service that security forces deployed in the town ran away when the insurgents attacked.

Residents said the insurgents headed to the centre of Chibok and declared that they were taking it over as part of their caliphate.

The insurgents have changed tactics in recent months by holding on to territories rather than using hit-and-run attacks that have left thousands dead.

It was, however, learnt that the attackers were those dislodged from Mubi by soldiers on Thursday.

A security source said troops engaged the insurgents in a lengthy gun battle at the headquarters of the Chibok Local Government Area.

Our correspondent could not ascertain the casualty figure as of the time of filing this report.

The source said, “The Boko Haram fighters attacked Chibok again on Thursday night but the soldiers gave them a good fight.

“From what we heard, the insurgents were those dislodged from Mubi following attempt by soldiers and the vigilante members.

“You know that vigilante members were drawn from all the local government areas of Adamawa. Some also came from Gombe and Kano states.”

But another security source said the insurgents only attacked Chibok and left without occupying the place.

Our correspondent could not get the Defence Spokesman, Maj. Gen Chris Olukolade, to comment on the attack as the calls to his mobile telephone line indicated that it was either switched off or in an area outside of network coverage.

Chairman, Chibok Community in Abuja, Chief Tsambido Abana, who confirmed the Chibok attack on Friday, explained that the situation in the town was dicey and the condition of residents uncertain.

Abana said, “I have been getting information that Boko Haram has attacked Chibok town again. Those that were able to escape to a place where there are mobile networks phoned me that the militants were shooting at people and for now, we don’t know the number of those that have been killed.

“I also learnt that the Army and the vigilante group have responded to the attack and they are engaging the terrorists, but for now, the situation is not clear. I believe within a day or two, we would get a clear picture of the situation.”

New Delhi: A young 11-year old boy who lives in the outskirts of India’s capital city has managed to bring electricity to no less than three hundred people of the area through the use of raw sewage outpouring from the industrial sector.
The young boy who does not attend school and recycles aluminum cans for a living was inspired by a Youtube video he saw at the local Presbyterian church computer skills teaching program.
“Our preacher is very active in the community and when I told him about my idea, he did everything to make it happen” admits the young boy who was abandoned at birth on the steps of the church.
