President Muhamamdu Buhari has nominated Mr. Edward Adamu, for appointment as the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Adamu from Gombe State, replaces Mr. Sulaiman Barau, from Zaria, Kaduna State, who retired in December, 2017.

A statement on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said a letter had since been sent to the Senate seeking Adamu’s confirmation.

The statement read, “In accordance with the provisions of Section 8(1) (2) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2007, President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu to the Senate for confirmation as Deputy Governor of the CBN. “This was contained in a letter dated January 26, 2018 to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

“Adamu, from Gombe State, replaces Mr. Sulaiman Barau, from Zaria, Kaduna State, who retired in December, 2017.

“The nominee, who has spent 25 years in the CBN, was appointed in 2012 as director of strategy.

“He became the director, Human Resources in 2016, from where he was nominated as deputy governor.”

President Muhammadu Buhari’s former Campaign Coordinator for Lagos State, Abiodun Faleke, has advised the All Progressives Congress leadership to ignore the pledge by the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, that he will deliver the state for the party in the 2019 presidential election.

Bello had during his recent visit to the Presidential Villa, assured the party’s leadership that he would ensure that Kogi delivers more votes for the President in 2019 than Katsina, his home state.

But Faleke, who was the deputy governorship candidate of the APC in Kogi State during the 2015 election, alleged that Bello had no such capacity because of his poor record of performance in the state.

Faleke, in a statement on Wednesday, said, “It is the height of deceit for a governor who owe several months’ salaries and pensions, and who cannot provide basic infrastructure, to boast of delivering Kogi for President Buhari in 2019.

“Mr. President, how can a governor who has been indicted by the Independent National Electoral Commission for engaging in double registration lead your campaign train in Kogi with such a moral stain hanging on his neck?

“The question is, will President Buhari contest? If yes, will he win Kogi with Yahaya Bello as the chief campaigner? The answer is No. This is because he has killed the APC in the state, thereby stripping us of critical campaign issues in the state.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday, decorated Ibrahim Danjuma with his new rank of Commissioner of Police after he had been prosecuted and acquitted for the extrajudicial killing of five Abuja traders and a lady in 2005.

Danjuma was among 15 new CPs recently promoted by the Police Service Commission on the recommendation of the IG.

He had been suspended from duty on account of the alleged extrajudicial killing and was subsequently charged to court alongside Othman Abdulsalam, Nicholas Zakaria, Baba Emmanuel, Ezekiel Acheneje and Sadiq Salami as co-defendants for felony.

The trial Judge, Justice Ishaq Bello, of the FCT High Court found Danjuma, who was the first accused person, not guilty and accordingly discharged and acquitted him while Emmanuel and Acheneje were sentenced to death.

Meanwhile, the IG has warned police officers to avoid temptation from political actors as the 2019 elections draw near.

Describing the election year as “critical,” the police chief urged police personnel to be professional and steadfast.

He made the call during the IG conference with commissioners of police and other senior officers in Abuja.

Reacting to allegations of disobedience of court orders in respect of the unsealing of the Peace Corps headquarters, Idris said the Force had appealed the court order, adding that it had asked the court to stay execution of the judgment on the matter.

Commenting on the re-organisation of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, he stated that the unit would now focus on violent crime

President Muhammadu Buhari will present the 2018 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly today (Tuesday).

The 2018 budget proposal presentation is scheduled to hold at 2pm.

The Federal Government plans to spend about N8.6tn next year, a jump of about 15 per cent from the N7.44tn budgeted for the current year.

The figures were contained in the 2018-2020 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, which Buhari had earlier sent to the National Assembly in compliance with the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2007.

The PUNCH, however, gathered that leaders of both the Senate and the House of Representatives were making last minute efforts to prevent drama during the presentation.

A source in the Senate, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed on Monday that both the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, held series of meetings with members of both chambers to douse the brewing tension since Buhari’s letter informing the lawmakers of the presentation last week.

The source informed one of our correspondents that some members of the House of Representatives specifically had made moves to prevent Buhari from laying the budget proposal today, while calling for postponement of the presentation.

Leaders of both chambers were said to have begun a massive lobbying of the lawmakers, especially the aggrieved ones, and held meetings with them simultaneously on Monday.

The Presidency on Thursday said an Abuja Magistrate’s Court as well as the international police popularly called the INTERPOL had issued fresh warrants for the arrest of the embattled former Chairman of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent.

Shehu said Maina’s investigation had been extended beyond his reinstatement and subsequent posting.

He said the investigation would even be extended to some foreign countries.

The presidential spokesman said, “Maina’s investigation has been expanded. This is beyond reinstatement. It has gone beyond that.

“You know that the INTERPOL has just issued an international warrant on him. A Nigerian court has also issued yet another warrant of arrest.

“All those cases involving Steve Oronsaye (former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation) that are ongoing, you know Maina is also involved. Law enforcement agencies are looking at that too.

“You are also aware that the Senate is also carrying out its own investigation on the matter.

The matter is being investigated from all fronts. The EFCC, for example, is discovering more and more properties and its officials are sealing them. They are also looking at banks and all that.

“In fact, this investigation will also touch some foreign countries.”

Shehu said the security agencies, including the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), were making presentations to the President on the matter.

He, however, said the President had yet to say the final word on the matter because he wanted to be fair to all the reports.

Spanish prosecutors have accused the Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo of defrauding the authorities of millions of euros in tax.

The prosecutor's office in Madrid says it has filed a lawsuit against the Portuguese player.
He is accused of evading tax of 14.7m euros (£13m; $16m) from 2011 to 2014.

The world's highest-paid sports star had previously said he was not worried about tax investigations as he had nothing to hide.

On this occasion he is accused of knowingly using a "business structure" to hide income made from his image rights.

In December, leaked documents suggested that Ronaldo had avoided tax on income allegedly held in offshore accounts.

He denied the allegations.
When asked about that investigation, he told a journalist from Radio Television Portuguesa (RTP) "Quien no debe no teme", which roughly translates as "He who has nothing to hide has no fear."

Ronaldo is the world's highest-paid sportsperson for the second successive year, according to Forbes' annual list of the world's wealthiest people.
He earned $93m (£72.05m) from salary, bonuses and endorsements last year.

he Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had revised the card maintenance charges in the new guide which was released last month from N100 annually to N50 monthly. This means every debit or credit card holder will pay N600 annually as against the N100 being paid previously.

According to data released recently by the Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) the central database for banking transactions in the country show that as at September 30, 2016, there are 29.24 million active cards being used by the 63 million active bank customers.

The new Guide to Bank Charges stipulates that banks charge N50 monthly as card maintenance fee on naira debit and credit cards, while foreign currency denominated debit and credit cards would be charged $20 or its equivalent on an annual basis.
