Enugu-based Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has alleged that President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, were planning to kill him over his criticism of the Federal Government and his opposition to the President’s re-election. Mbaka, in a new video currently trending on YouTube, made the allegation during a sermon he delivered in his church. The congregation erupted in a howl when Mbaka said, “President Jonathan and his wife are planning to kill me.” The Roman Catholic Priest, whose recent comments on the general elections generated ripples, said the plan to assassinate him showed that the President no longer had the fear of God. He said, “Although I sent a letter about this somewhere but I want to say this to the atmosphere. Let me say to the whole world that President Jonathan and his wife, Patience, are planning to assassinate Father Mbaka. It is a known secret, so whoever they want to use, I don’t know. They may not come themselves. They may use these unemployed people. The same people I am speaking for. I don’t know why people no longer have the fear of God. “Do they think that killing Father Mbaka will make Jonathan and his wife win the election? Is Mbaka their problem? And a priest asked a question that touched me. He said all this while that Father Mbaka has been supporting Jonathan and his wife, did Buhari and his party make any statement to threatened him?” Mbaka maintained that his criticism of the Jonathan administration was a divine mandate, while making allusion to the bible story of when God sent Moses to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. He compared his New Year message against President Jonathan to Moses’ message to the Egyptian King, Pharaoh. He said in the video, “I am just trying to tell any Pharaoh that is threatening to kill any Moses to remember what happened in Exodus chapter 12. After the Passover, the family of Pharaoh cried. They ended in the middle of the Red Sea.” The Catholic priest said despite the threats, he would continue to discharge his duties without fear of anyone. Mbaka also denied that Patience Jonathan gave him any money when she visited his church. He said although President Jonathan dropped money for him through Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, he left the money with Ekweremadu and his wife. He also said that Patience Jonathan’s offering to the church was also rejected. THE All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday promised to liberate captured towns in the North-East from the hold of Boko Haram insurgents. Security operatives had hectic time controlling the unprecedented crowd that turned out to welcome Buhari to the state, which serves as the base of Boko Haram. The state governor, Kashim Shettima, had on Sunday declared Monday a work-free day in the state and asked residents to troop out to show their love for Buhari. Movements were paralysed, especially around the Ramat Square venue of the APC presidential rally. At the Shehu of Borno’s palace, Buhari said, “I was here in 1975 as governor of the defunct North-East states, I’m happy that I received a befitting welcome; if elected, I will focus on tackling the persistent insecurity affecting the North-East, it is not easy as the damage has been done. “Your Royal Highness, God willing if APC government is elected, all towns under Boko Haram control will be liberated and rebuilt. It was unfortunate that commercial activities were paralysed following the insecurity. In the past, hundreds of trailers loaded with goods took off from Maiduguri to various neighbouring countries, but presently the reverse is the situation. “Boko Haram ideology contradicts Islamic principles, because Islam does not allow senseless killings of innocent souls. It is unfortunate that innocent persons were being killed in mosques, churches and their houses. God willing, if APC government is elected we will restore the confidence in governance.” The Borno monarch, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, told the APC presidential candidate that, if elected, he should focus on restoration of peace, massive investment, re-construction of federal roads and ensure the success of oil exploration in the Lake Chad region. The speeches at the rally were continually punctuated by the shouts of “Sai Buhari.” The crowd defied attempts at maintaining order as they surged towards the podium to touch Buhari, who is seen in the state as a hero. The surging crowd destroyed the steel barrier around the podium and damaged the television installation for the live coverage of the campaign rally thus forcing the live transmission off the air. Those in attendance at the rally included the APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi; former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Audu Ogbeh; Senator Lawal Sha’aibu, Umar Farouk Aliyu, Senator Hadi Sirika, APC Secretary, Mai Mala Bunu; and a former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has criticised the two frontline candidates in the March 28 presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party and Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of the All Progressives Congress. Soyinka, in an interview with the BBC on Monday, insisted that the political parties should have come up with far better options than the two leading candidates. He described President Jonathan, who is running for a second term and the opposition leader, Buhari, as “problematic candidates.” “There is a huge albatross hanging [around] the necks of the two main candidates. I can understand the dilemma which many voters have,” Soyinka said. He added that “one contender is troubled by the present, the other by the past.” Soyinka also decried the lack of fair play in the election, saying the spirit of “let’s have a fair war” was not yet deep enough. He faulted Jonathan for the failure to rescue the more than 200 schoolgirls abducted from Chibok in April 2014. “What happened was a clear failure of leadership – a slow reaction, an inadequate reaction and response,” Soyinka told the BBC. He stressed that while responsibility for the Boko Haram crisis rested with President Jonathan, the government could not be held solely responsible for the entire jihadist problem as it began under previous governments. “Buhari and his partner, the late Gen. Tunde Idiagbon, after (former military head of state) Sani Abacha, I think they represented the most brutal face of military dictatorship. There is no question about that,” Soyinka said. “But the environment changes, circumstances change and… I look at the possibility of a genuine internal transformation in some individuals. I’ve been disappointed before and we must always be ready to be disappointed again,” he added. Soyinka, however, said Nigerians should be ready to “go back to the trenches stand up against misrule from whoever wins the election. “Nigerians should be prepared to deal with any new betrayal by any ruler with the same passion and commitment…. as they did with the late Sani Abacha because we cannot continue this cycle of repetitious evil and irresponsibility.” On what to do to counter the Boko Haram sect, whose activities was cited for the postponement of the election, Soyinka called for “an aerial bombardment with weapons of the mind” in addition to the military offensive. “All kinds of propaganda leaflets should have been raining in those areas because not all members of Boko Haram are convinced. They need to know there is an exit and the state will take care of them. Then the waverers’ minds have to be reinforced on the positive side – on the side of humanity. “The kind of propaganda being used now between the political parties, just a fraction of that should have gone into attacking Boko Haram,” he added. Asked whether he believed the nation could be dismembered in the next 10 years, he said, “I doubt it very much. The threats of dismemberment have been going on so long that one of these days there is going to be a wish fulfilled. “The idea of either dismembering at the cost of human lives, as the Boko Haram people are trying to do with their caliphate delusions or to force people to stay together as happened in the case of the [1967-1970] Biafra war, doesn’t make sense, it’s an abuse of intelligence. “Arrangements can be made in which people stick together under protocols of association which allow some kind of autonomy for certain issues and other cases centralised policies,” he said. Soyinka also noted that the huge amount being expended on campaigns would inevitably lead to broken electoral promises. “What does this make of the incoming government? This money came in from somewhere. APC has been consistent in saying that PDP has ruled Nigeria for 16 disastrous years in which corruption, impunity, insurgency, armed robbery and several ills of society held sway. But at a very close look at the APC, from my veiw, i am seeing: 1.Rotimi Amaechi – 8 years speaker; 7 year, Governor under PDP. 2. Atiku Abubakar – 8 years Vice president under PDP. 3. George Akume – 8 years Governor under PDP. 4.Bukola Saraki – 8 years Governor; 2 years, Senator under PDP. 5. Timipre Sylver – 4 years Governor under PDP. 6. Audu Ogbe – 2 years Chairmanship of the PDP. 7. Aminu Masari –4 years as the Speaker, House of Representatives under PDP. 8. Chris Ngige –3 years Governor under PDP. 9. Rabiu Kwankwaso – 7 years Governor; 3 years Defense minister under PDP. 10. El Rufai –4 years FCT Minister; 2 years BPE chairman under PDP. 11. And to cap it all, Obasanjo is the navigator of the APC, a man who spent 8 of the disastrous 16 years as the maximum. ruler of Nigeria. It is now clearer that APC is a waste basket of the PDP, where the people who created and perpetuated the 16 disastrous years are now dumped. So where is the change coming from? NO fewer than 360, 000 security operatives as well as 25 sniffer dogs from the United States would be deployed in the states for the 2015 general elections, heads of security agencies have said. While Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, said about 300, 000 of his officers and men had been trained in partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission and development partners, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr. Ade Abolurin, said that 60, 000 of his men would partake in securing lives and properties during the elections. Abba and Abolurin, represented by the Deputy Commandant-General (Operations), Mr. Evan Ewurum, spoke on Friday in Abuja during the closing ceremony of a two-day conference on the role of the state and non-state actors in mitigating violence in elections, organised by the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development in collaboration with the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. The conference had as its theme, “Nigeria 2015 elections and Beyond.” According to Abolurin, the NSCDC has also completed plans to import 25 sniffer dogs from the US to detect explosive components during the elections. Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, had setup an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to provide security needs during elections. The committee co-chaired by the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), drew members from all the security agencies, including the military. But a representative of the Department of State Security, Mrs. Mary Otubu, who did not make public the number of officers the DSS will deploy at the event, assured voters and government officials of their safety. Abba said, “Policing the society has always been a challenge, all the police officers will be deployed in the elections; over 300, 000 officers will be used. The Commonwealth has also offered to help us in that respect of training by 21st of this month. Some of the trainings are even train-the-trainers until it gets to the last person on their roles during the elections.” The IGP stated that the role of security agencies before, during and after the elections was key to the enthronement of a viable democratic culture. According to him, the Federal Government has provided non-lethal weapons and about 2,000 patrol vehicles to ensure that the police perform their duties during elections. Speaking on when a police officer should use firearms during elections, Abba said the time to use lethal weapons would depend on the discretion of the officers “but in compliance with the Police Act.” Ewurum said all officers in the intelligent unit of NSCDC would be deployed for the elections. Participants at the event urged government agencies against partiality but to show high level of professionalism. A former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais, had, at the opening of the conference, regretted the non-implementation of the report of his Electoral Reform Committee, saying election crises being witnessed in the country would have been completely arrested long time ago if the report had been implemented. BREAKING NEWS: Defections Hit Ondo PDP As Jonathan Cancels Campaign.Former Speakers in Ondo State House of Assembly, five Commissioners in Mimiko's administration and eight local government chairmen in Ondo State are right now at a defection rally in Akure where they dumped PDP for APC. Scores of councillors are also part of the defection train. They are being led by former Chief of Staff to the late Governor Segun Agagu, Mr Femi Agagu.The greatest shock at the rally is the defection of former Speaker Victor Olabimtan, a director in President Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation and also a current member of the Federal Civil Service Commission. In all, 46 PDP leaders in Ondo are leading thousands of their supporters to dump PDP for APC at a ceremony currently taking place at APC secretariat along Oyemekun Road, Akure. The defection earthquake has forced Jonathan Campaign Organisation to cancel today campaign in Akure, the Ondo State capital, as majority of known supporters of the President have defected to APC or have traveled out of town. All mobilization efforts for the rally have crashed, forcing PDP leaders to opt for cancellation of Akure rally today(14th). I just confirmed dis position now in a program in AIT- "NIGERIA IN FOCUS"! At an interactive session, Amaechi among other things, reels out plans of the campaign organisation and also clears the air on knotty issues. Excerpts: Why Jonathan is in trouble — Gov Amaechi Says he didn’t fund Buhari’s campaign IS it true you funded the Buhari campaign for the primaries? I did not. Buhari did not spend money for the primaries. Anybody who said they spent money should come forward with evidence. We have maintained consistently that Nigerians would fund us and that is why we have launched our campaign we are hoping that people will contribute. It is there on our website; you will just look at the account and go and pay. And we are making sure that we convince General Buhari to be the sole signatory to that account. That is the way we would raise our money. We would not depend on rich men. You can’t fight the president on funds. See how much he raised from people who some of them collected the N2.3trillion on oil subsidy and are yet to pay back. If he is not prosecuting them for oil subsidy, why shouldn’t they pay for his election? Symbol of change The president is trying to raise over N200 million for power and then those people he is helping to raise the money are giving him N500million. We can’t fight the president with money, we will fight him with the people. We will fight the president by telling Nigerians that they have to vote for change and the symbol of change for us is the APC and General Buhari. I will like to reiterate again that General Buhari did not pay anybody to vote for him at the primaries and he won because Nigerians want change. How do you intend to combine your duty as director-general of the APC presidential campaign with your duties as governor? We will try. That is why there is a deputy governor. I have a deputy who is efficient and I will also from time to time go back to the state. But we need to deliver and we are all making sacrifices ?to deliver this change. I don’t know how people feel. The president and the federal government have not denied the fact that N2.3trillion was taken for oil subsidy and that was six months in 2011. Oil subsidy before that time was N300billion, so how did it rise to N2.3trillion and the people are not afraid? The federal government and all its agents were not afraid that N2.3trillion was taken. So, basically, I don’t mind what I can do legally to make sure that there is a better Nigeria. What about the controversy that you have not paid eight months salaries? Anybody who said I have not paid him salaries should come forward. We have paid up till December; you can call Rivers State to confirm. I got a Blackberry message on Tuesday, saying; “Thank God, we are going home with our salary before Christmas.” Payment of salaries What we agreed in the cabinet was that we should make sure that everybody goes home with his salary before Christmas because as a Christian, I know that December 23 and 24 are the two days that Christians like to shop. I do not owe salaries in Rivers State. I am proud to say that I will pay salaries until I leave office and I will continue to pursue development projects in the state. I was even surprised that the president’s spokesman even put it in one of his statements when he was responding to the accusation that the people who contributed to the N21billion are those plundering our economy and he said after all, Governor Amaechi funded the election of Buhari while he owes teachers eight months salary. And I asked the question, for you to be a presidential spokesman, facts and statistics must be on your palm; you shouldn’t joke with that. But the man was just reacting to gossip. What are Buhari’s programmes for Nigeria if he wins the 2015 election? The message is simple. Buhari chased away Maitasene while he was Head of State.
