A young soldier Ifeanyi Sunday and two others died reportedly on Wednesday August 14, when troops of Operation Lafiya Dole averted a Boko Haram attack on Molai village in Borno State. According to a friend of the slain soldier, they had chatted on Tuesday August 13 and on the said day he was killed. "It is very difficult for me to believe we just chatted on Tuesday and even yesterday. I don't know it will be the last one. God protect the living heroes and may the souls of Falling one rest in peace. Anyi may Your Soul rest in peace ." he wrote. The troops engaged the insurgents in a gunfight on Wednesday night in Mammanti, a deserted village near Maiduguri. The insurgents who came in large numbers were on their way to attack Molai, a settlement barely two kilometres away from the capital city before the gun duel broke out. Molai residents were thrown in panic as sounds of explosions and ammunitions in the dead of the night were heard even in some parts of Maiduguri where the people found them disturbing. Soldiers around Mammanti who had been on red alert had, however, faced the assailants squarely, foiling their plans to infiltrate Molai village or go beyond. The gun battle which begun at about 10pm is said to have lasted till 2:30am on Thursday when the last gunshot was heard. Justice Abiodun Adesodun of the Ekiti State High Court, has convicted a former cashier officer with Fidelity Bank, Ado branch, Ado Ekiti, Michael Adedayo Ihinolurinjon, and sentenced him to ten years in prison for stealing money from the bank’s vault and diverting customers’ deposits to personal use. . . Ihinolurinjon was on Thursday, August 15, 2019, found guilty of a two-count charge of stealing in a criminal case filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, #EFCC, Ibadan zonal office. . . The offence, according to the charge sheet, was contrary to Section 390 (g) of the Criminal Code Laws Cap 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012. . . The bank had written a petition to the EFCC alleging that while still a staffer, Ihinolurinjon stole the sum of N8,891,000 (Eight Million, Eight Hundred and Ninety-One Thousand Naira) from its vault, and also failed to remit a total of N7,251,600 (Seven Million, Two Hundred and Fifty-One, Six Hundred Naira) he collected from customers to the bank’s account. . . “Our preliminary review showed that Michael fraudulently diverted the sums of N8,891,000 and N7,251,600.00 of the branch vault and customers’ cash respectively. The cash deposit of N7,251,600 received by Michael from various customers between 1/9/16 and 19/9/16 were neither posted to their respective accounts nor the cash accounted for,” the bank stated in its petitioned dated October 17, 2016. . . The bank also accused Ihinolurinjon of absconding from duty ‘upon sighting one of the customers whose cash he had fraudulently diverted’. . . Following the petition, the Commission went into investigation after which the accused was originally charged with obtaining through false pretence in a one-count charge filed in 2017. . . The charge was later amended to a two-count, bordering on stealing, upon which he was re-arraigned on June 24, 2019. . . While prosecuting the case, the EFCC, through its lawyer, Abdulresheed Lanre Suleman, called nine witnesses and also tendered several exhibits. A 35-year-old man died in mysterious circumstances while having sex with a 50-year-old widow in a maize plantation in Sachangwan-Chebyakwai, near Eldoret International Airport in Uasin Gishu County on Monday. The deceased identified as Julius Kiptoo is said to have been on a drinking spree until late night at a local bar on Sunday before hooking up with the woman whose name could not be immediately established. When journalists toured the area on Monday morning, shocked residents were seen trooping to a maize plantation where the duo had their romp to view the lifeless body of the young man. The woman narrated to detectives who arrived at the scene how the young man became obsessed with nonstop sex after swallowing a sex booster pill. “We were headed to the house but he became impatient and demanded that we do it at the maize plantation. However, he started becoming sick in the process before dying instantly,” said the woman. She said that she later called neighbours who confirmed that the young man, who does menial jobs in the village, had died. Police from the nearby Kiambaa Police station who arrived at the scene moved the body to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Mortuary. The woman was on the receiving end from irate villagers who blasted her for being a bad example to young women in the village by moving with younger men. “This is very embarrassing. We look up to such women for guidance but they are the ones spoiling young people,” said Susan Jerotich, a resident told Nairobi news. Operatives of Enugu State Police Command have arrested one Sampson Nwaobasi, an Enugu-based farmer, for allegedly killing his business partner, Friday Ani, over proceeds from farming business. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement, yesterday, in Enugu that the incident happened on July 31 in Agbani community, while the suspect was arrested on August 7. He said the deceased and one Paul Eze were all partners in the farming of cucumber, as the deceased and Eze raised money for the suspect, who did the farming, sold the produce and shared profits. Police statement According to the statement, “it was gathered that his victim, Ani, a student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, and his business associate met his untimely death when he demanded his share of the proceeds. “It was gathered that they were to share N6 million as the business thrived for four months. However, the suspect allegedly started avoiding his partners, which made them believe that he may have craftily reinvested the proceed without them knowing. “The deceased traced the suspect to the farm to find out what has been happening. In the farm, an argument arose between them, which allegedly resulted in the killing of Ani by the suspect, who buried him inside the bush. “The deceased was said to have been reported missing by relations, who could not immediately find out what happened. “Following suspicious ways the story appeared, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sulaiman Balarabe, ordered an investigation during which the suspect was nabbed with the help of neighbourhood watch group members from the community, where he was hiding.” He came to kill me in the farm—Suspect The Police spokesman said the suspect had been helping police operatives in their investigation in relation to how he allegedly killed his victim and quickly buried him inside the bush. Amaraizu noted that the suspect had, however, maintained in his statement that the money in question was not N6 million, but N300,000. He said the suspect also maintained that he never wanted to kill the deceased, but that the deceased wanted to kill him over the money, but he (Nwaobasi) struggled to get the knife and stabbed him to death. A housewife, Mrs. Uju Ifejika, has reportedly lost jewelries worth a whopping sum of N1.5b to thieves believed to be domestic staff in her Ikoyi home in Lagos. Source reports that the thieves allegedly burgled her home on 26th May, 2019, entered her bedroom and carted away the items comprising diamond and gold jewelries including a cash of £30,000 and escaped. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the theft namely, one female, Nnenna Anari, 25, Babalola Olaitan, 42 and the buyer, Bashiru Yahaya, 32. The alleged theft was reported to the operatives of State Anti-Robbery Squad at Ikeja Command, Lagos, who moved in to investigate the theft and arrested the suspects. So far the three suspects, who were arrested including the buyer of the suspected items, were detained at the Command for investigation. Source gathered that the confessional statement by Nnenna and Babalola led to the arrest of the buyer, Yahaya. They were charged before the Ogba Magistrates Court for conspiracy, burglary and stealing. The Police alleged that the defendants and others now at large, conspired and burgled Mrs. Ifejika’s home and carted away the items when she was not around. When she returned home and discovered that her home was burgled, she went where she kept the items only to discover that they were no longer there and she then reported to the Police. However, when they were arraigned the defendants denied and pleaded not guilty before the Court. The prosecutor, Supol Peter Nwaogwugwu, asked the Court to give a date for hearing to enable the Police to prove the allegation before the Court. Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Y.O Aje-Afunwa, granted them bail in the sum of N19m with two sureties in like sum. They were remanded in prison custody pending when they will perfect their bail conditions. The matter was adjourned till 29th August, 2019. A security guard at a residence on Gabriel Okoyi Street, Ikate-Lekki, Springbay Estate, Lagos State, Bitrus Peter, has died from injuries he reportedly sustained in the hands of two naval ratings. The 29-year-old man was reportedly beaten up by the naval ratings and two security guards on the order of one Seun, a tenant at a house manned by Peter. City Round learnt that Seun accused the deceased of stealing a piece of his jewellery and invited the naval officers attached to a landlord on the estate to probe him. It was gathered that Peter led the naval ratings to a man he sold the necklace to for N40,000, but the man also claimed to have resold it N100, 000. The money was said to have been recovered from the man. Afterwards, the naval ratings and two of the estate guards stripped Peter half-Unclad and descended on him heavily in Seun’s presence. He reportedly went unconscious when one of the officers booted him in the head. Peter’s younger brother, James, who is also a guard in one of the houses on the estate, told our correspondent that he got wind of the incident from a friend and he rushed to the scene. He said the assailants and Seun ran away by the time he arrived there, adding that he and a relative rushed Peter to the Lagos Island General Hospital where he later died.
