A student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Grace Opeyemi, who allegedly committed suicide due to poor academic performance, once attempted taking her life before she eventually consumed an insecticide, Sniper, on Friday.

A course mate of the deceased at the Department of English in the institution, who preferred anonymity, told PUNCH Metro on Sunday that early in July, Grace attempted suicide but was unsuccessful.

She, however, did not give details of the failed attempt.

She added that the late student was rushed to the OAU Health Centre on Friday after taking Sniper, but was referred to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the OAU Teaching Hospital, where she died.

Another course mate of the deceased, Adekola Oluwasetan, said Grace was a poet and wrote many poems, especially on depression.

She stated, “I am not particularly close to her. I only knew her through some of her literary works. Most of her works in poem and prose were on depression.

“To me, she acted against what she preached in most of her works. I also do not believe that she died as a result of poor academic results alone.

“Her original course mates graduated last session and she could not, because she failed 12 special electives and five core courses.

“She took the papers again but she failed some of them for the second time; that is the reason I believe that her action was as a result of depression.”

The Public Relations Officer, OAU, Abiodun Olanrewaju, told our correspondent on Sunday that contrary to information in the media that the late student committed suicide because of poor academic performance, findings showed otherwise.

Meanwhile, a statement signed by the class representatives of the English Department, which was issued after a meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and other top officers of the faculty on Sunday, said the late Grace did not have outstanding courses as of the time of her death.

The statement signed by the part four representatives, Igbecha Chukwuebuka, Ifeoma Nwude and Ruth Olafenwa, read in part, “The Dean, Faculty of Arts and Head of Department, English, summoned the exam officer, the immediate past President, Faculty of Arts Students’ Association, who happens to be the course mate of the deceased, and the incumbent FASA President, alongside the English part four class representatives to a meeting in the dean’s office this evening.

“A review of her result was done and it was discovered that she didn’t have five outstanding courses, neither did she have outstanding 12 special electives.

“She had 10 units of special electives passed already and she only had LIT 420 (project course) yet to be approved or graded. Only her SER result is still being verified. In fact, she carried no course over until her demise.

“We can then deduce that the deceased, Grace Dara Opeyemi’s death is not to be attributed to poor academic performance.”

A senior management staff of the university, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the content of the statement.

Veteran Nollywood actress, Nse Ikpe-Etim has revealed that herself and her husband, Clifford Sule, will not be considering adoption, although she had wished to have twin babies earlier.

Nse had earlier disclosed that her doctors discovered that she has no womb (uterus) and can medically not become pregnant.

She said three- years ago, she was diagnosed with Adenomyosis, a condition whereby the inner lining of the uterus breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus.

“

I was told I couldn’t have kids. And so, I had to have a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) to make me have a life again and to stop going through what I was going through. And I’m literarily telling women and men, it really doesn’t matter if you can’t bear children. What really matters is what you would do for the world, for the universe.” she said at the event.

However, recently, Nse was a guest on TVC where she spoke about her condition and how she has been able to get by without allowing the condition weigh her down.

Asked if she will ever consider adoption, Nse who spoke in a definitive tone said : “No and I am not going to have a conversation about it”

When asked if she ever desires to the miracle of having a child of her own as God could give her a new womb, Nse who got married to her hearthrob, Clifford, in February 2013, said “Why hasn’t God replaced my missing tooth? I have been asking him for it. The truth is that I believe that if in religion we use our sense, we would understand it. You see this thing called miracle, it is a miracle I am alive and that is all I stand for”.

Nse spoke on how she has been able to move on with life after her womb was removed.

“

If you broke your tooth today, would you carry on with life? It is a part of the body. That is what it is. So I had a condition, I had to face my fears. I had an amazing partner who thought we have to chose life and then I went ahead and got treatment for it.
When things happen in life, you get on with it. We seem to always want to put thing on a scale and weigh it and say this is so heavy, my heart can’t take it. Of course your heart can. We are built to be resilient but we chose when to be weak and when to be strong. It is a choice to be happy in this situation” she said.

On her childlessness regrets Nse says she has no regrets.

“Someone asked me if I had any regrets in an interview years ago and I answered I wished I had kids and I was like I hope to have twins. Actually right now, no I don’t have any regrets. I have accepted everything that I have come across in life and everything has been a learning curve. It’s either to make me a better or make me achieve greater heights. I am happy with where I am at”.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Ilorin Zonal Office on August 2, 2019 secured the conviction Olorunwa Okikiola and Adebisi Toheeb, both students of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin for offences bordering on internet fraud.

The Charge against Olorunwa reads: “That you, Olorunwa Okikiola, sometimes in June 2019 or thereabout at Ilorin, Kwara State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court attempted to commit an offence by pretending and representing yourself to be a white man in love with a white woman, Pearl Mills as it is contained in your gmail account:Okikiola293@gmail.com and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 95 and 321 of the same Penal Code law and punishable under Section 322 of the same law.”

The charge against Adebisi reads: “That you, Adebisi Toheeb Adedayo, (alias James Read) sometimes in January 2019, at Ilorin within the judicial division of the High Court, did attempt to cheat by personation, when you pretended to be one James Read , a white Caucasian male, with gmail account,James.read086@gmail.com and in a love relationship, a representation you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 95 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 324 of the same Penal Code.”

Olorunwa was convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment by Justice Sikiru Oyinloye while Adebisi was sentenced to six months imprisonment by Justice Mahmood Abdulgafar, both of the Kwara State High Court, sitting in Ilorin.

They were also ordered to forfeit mobile phones recovered from them to the Federal Government, while authorities at the Madala Prison were ordered to facilitate how Adedayo would write his second semester examination.

Pandemonium broke out in the Coconut and Tin Can Island areas of Lagos on Thursday as members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the National Association of Road Transport Owners clashed.

It was learnt that four truck drivers were seriously injured in the fracas, which lasted for nearly one and a half hours.

The Chairman of the dry cargo section of NARTO, Alhaji Innua Mohammed, said the clash, which started in the morning, threw many port users into panic and unable to access the port through the Tin Can Island area.

Mohammed alleged that officials of the union were attacked by hoodlums, who were members of the NURTW.

He stated, “At night, these area boys mobilised themselves and police escorts from the Trinity Police Station; some of the drivers, who were sleeping in their trucks, were shot at and attacked with machetes and their trucks were destroyed; the hoodlums wanted to burn some of the trucks.

“Apart from the driver shot with a locally-made pistol, we have four people attacked with machetes.”

One of the drivers, who craved anonymity, said the attackers were annoyed that trucks were hindering the free movement of their buses from the Ajegunle area.

According to him, the NURTW members got help from LASTMA officials and blocked the main road from the Tin Can Port in order to make way for buses coming from Ajegunle.

He said, “We were in the trucks and didn’t know what was going on; all of a sudden, we saw area boys coming out and attacking us with machetes and shooting at us. I have personally taken three people to hospital.

“My conductor is currently in hospital and doctors have extracted 18 bullets from his body already.

“The area boys were escorted by the police and they were shooting repeatedly, while the police were firing teargas canisters in our direction.

“These area boys are members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers; they said the attack was because their bus were not moving freely.”

Mohammed alleged that the hoodlums were extorting as much as N80,000 from the truck drivers trying to pass through Ajegunle in order to beat the traffic.

It was gathered that the NARTO officials were trying to calm down the aggrieved drivers as of the time of filing this report.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Bala Elkana, told one of our correspondents that the crisis was caused by NARTO members, who invaded the territory of the NURTW members to collect dues from commercial bus drivers.

He said, “The problem was between members of NARTO and the agberos. The NARTO men from the Tin Can first gate and crossed over to the Okoko North area, which is not their jurisdiction, to collect dues from truck drivers. Then the agberos from Okoko North blocked them, saying that they could not come to their area and be collecting dues. The two groups were throwing stones at each other.

“Four truck windscreens were shattered with stones; nobody was killed, but four people were injured. The situation was brought under control. We sent reinforcement made up of personnel of the Rapid Response Squad and regular policemen, who quickly restored normalcy in the area.

“Investigation has commenced. The leaders of both groups have been invited for questioning.”
