Two brothers, Olanrewaju and Kolawole Afuwape, yesterday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing the N1.3 million a pastor realised as rent on his property.

Olanrewaju, 44, and Kolawole, 35, pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and theft.

Prosecuting Sergeant Tope Adegbie alleged that the defendants committed the offence between 2018 and July 2019 at Alimosho area of Lagos.

Adegbie alleged that the defendants forged an August 18, 2000 document through which they stole the cash realised as rent for the 24-rooms and two shops, belonging to the complainant, Pastor Lawrence Idowu.

Magistrate Y. O. Aro-Lambo granted them N50,000 bail with one surety each in the like sum.

He adjourned till October 17.

Students Union Government of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state has expressed worry over recklessness of commercial bus drivers plying within the school and its environs.

Director of Transport in the institution, Mmesirionye Patrick stated this on Saturday during the 1st Annual Transport Summit, themed, “A Good Transport Network: A Panacea to Accident Minimization”.

He said the ugly trend has led to increased cases of road crashes with attendant loss of lives of students and staff of the university.

According to him, the institution lost three students and a staff within three months, blaming the deaths on overspeeding by the drivers, many of who he said, lack basic training.

He said the Summit was to address incidences of road accidents and other challenges confronting transportation in the university.

“We decided to organize this Summit in collaboration with the state government, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation and other relevant stakeholders to sensitize and educate drivers on proper road usage.

“Most drivers of the shuttle buses that ply within the school and environs don’t only lack basic training, but drive recklessly.

“Since most of the buses have automatic gear, they feel there’s no need for training as long as the buses are easy to drive.

“Some of them speed as far as 80km per hour even within the school environment, instead of the stipulated speed limit of 40km.”

Mmesirionye also lamented high cost of transportation fare students were subjected to, blaming it on high rate of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by the state government.

“Some drivers pay up to N800 daily as revenue besides the daily remittances they make to the owners of the buses. So they don’t have option than to hike fares,” he added.

Earlier, the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Andrew Kumapayi called for attitudinal change among motorists, including alcohol and drugs intake before driving.

Kumapayi, represented by the Public Education Officer, Pascal Anigbo stressed the need for passengers to ensure roadworthiness of the vehicles before boarding.

One of the speakers, Chief Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, maintained that reduction in road crashes was a collective responsibility of the government, regulators and the motoring public.

Onunkwo, founder and Chief Executive Officer, Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation, pledged to erect new bus stand for the institution, which the students described as their biggest threat and that of the university staff and bus drivers.

A girl has been left with serious bruises after being assaulted by a military officer who accused her of putting on a camouflage top.

The incident happened, today, in Sango Otta, Ogun State. The lady works at Nipco filling station and the soldier was there to buy fuel, when he spotted and assaulted her.

A yet-to-be-identified man has commited suicide in a shop along Nnebisi road Asaba Delta State.

The body of the deceased was dicovered by passersby in the early hours of today August 9th.

The police have been alerted and his corpse has been evacuated and deposited at the morgue.

Dr. Joseph Imoter Ukpanya was crushed to death by a truck along the Makurdi-Lafia road last weekend.

According to reports, late Ukpanya, who was pursuing his PhD in History and War studies at the Nigerian Defence Academy, was on his way home from Jos, Plateau state, when he ran into a gang of armed robbers.

The robbers forced him at gunpoint to lay face down on the road as a barricade for vehicles. However, an oncoming speeding truck refused to stop and ran over him. He wrote his last Exam on July 16th, 2019.

Ukpanya was laid to rest on Thursday, August 8, in Gwer West local government area of Benue State after a wakekeep at his family compound, Adikpo Street, Ankpa Ward, Makurdi.

When he decided to get married in 2013, he made me his Best man. He was always fond of introducing me to a lot of persons, not just as his friend, but also as his Best man. He once said to me " Dada, you are a part of me that can never be forgotten." I will tell you one thing about Maradona, Maradona was a damn good man. His death has created a vacuum in the lives of many, that can never be filled. Forever in my heart. Adieu Maradona. May the Almighty God bless your soul. Amen."

A Zimbabwean born woman has become the first ever black woman to be crowned Miss London.

24-year-old Vimbai Chapungu, a Masters student at a top university in London, was crowned Miss London 2019.

She recently took part in the Miss England Final held in Newcastle where the contestants were put through different rounds of tests, including a Sports Round and Talent Round, an eco-wear round and a general knowledge quiz.

Two persons including a student of the Department of Business Administration in the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Amos Ehis Asuelimen and Kelvin Ogashi have been arrested for impersonating Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and wife of the President, Aisha Buhari.

They were arrested during a tactical operation carried out by the Edo State Command of the Department of State Security.

Amos was arrested at Ubiaja, Esan South East local government while Kelvin aged 18 was arrested at old Agbor Road, Ikpoba-Okha local government area.

Amos, aged 30, was alleged to have created a fictitious facebook account with the photograph of Prof Osibanjo with the purpose of scamming people and Kelvin created an Instagram account with the name and picture of Aisha Buhari

Parading the suspects before journalists in Benin City, State Director of the DSS, Brown Ekwoaba represented by the Deputy Director Security Enforcement, Mr. Galadima Byange, said the suspects have confessed to the crime.

Ekwoaba said; “Asuelimen confessed to have defrauded not less than five persons.

“He admitted defrauding not less than five persons whom he told to send money and recharge cards, in order to process their registration and subsequent eligibility for a loan of one hundred thousand naira each.”

“Ogashi confessed to have created an Instagram account with the name and picture of the wife of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari for the purpose of swindling unsuspecting members of the public.

“He further confessed to have created the account in May 2019 with a message that the First Lady was empowering Nigerian youth with cash to start up their business and that interested persons were required to register with money. His accomplices are currently at large.
“You can see that the two suspects and even those listed to be at large are youths of productive age. While the two suspects will be charged to court shortly, this Service wishes to advise youths engaged or contemplating to engage in act(s) of this nature or other fraudulent behaviours, that there is no short cut to wealth. They should engage themselves in decent productive venture or risk being “guest” of law enforcement agents.

Ogashi said he is a tailor by trade but only used the image of the first lady and that he has not defrauded anybody with it.
