Fans of social media comedian and actress, Steph Isuma, better known as Calabar Chic, were taken by surprise months back when she narrated her rape experience and how she had to battle with depression after the ordeal.

Speaking more about the incident in a chat with Saturday Beats, Isuma said, “I shared my story to inspire hope. I want people to know that depression is real and that they are not alone in whatever they are going through. I battled depression for a long time after I got raped at the age of 14 and I attempted suicide on a number of occasions. Since we don’t take issues of depression and sexual abuse as seriously as we should in our society, I decided to shed more light on the matter by sharing my story with people.”

The entertainer added that speaking up was therapeutic for her. “For me, speaking about it was therapeutic. While trying to help others, I was also helping myself. I decided to share my story because I had spent so many years in hiding, and I felt if I could inspire just one person, I would feel fulfilled. I didn’t want my story to be untold when it could inspire some people to help themselves. I have come to understand that living is an act of bravery, and as happy as I appear to be now, there were times I fought hard to get through the day. The truth is that some of the people we look up to, who appear to be the strongest, are also fighting some tough battles.”

On what she considers to be her greatest achievement, Calabar Chic said, “I believe that life is a constant work in progress and the small and big moments all make up who I am. But, one of my greatest achievements so far would be getting my university degree. My parents wanted that so much for me and I made them proud as I graduated with a good result. All their struggle and hard work paid off, so it was a win-win for all of us.

She also described self-discovery as the greatest achievement one could have in life, “because if one discovers oneself and accepts what one is, one would be able to live up to one’s true potential and be happy,” she added. “For me, surviving the last 14 years of my life and being able to stay happy is one of my biggest accomplishments. And I am immensely proud of myself for that.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested 30 students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, as well as those of Olabisi Onabanjo University.

The anti-corruption body arrested FUNAAB, MAPOLY students on Wednesday, after storming the Ibogun campus of the OOU in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State to arrest some students of the school.

A student of OOU, Samson Adeyemi, who is also the students’ spokesperson, claimed the EFCC agents took away 18 students from the Ibogun campus.

According to him, the agents arrived at some students’ hostels around 12am on Tuesday and broke in through the windows and the doors before making arrests.

Our correspondent learnt that operatives raided student apartments, claiming that they were Internet fraudsters. Some cars, laptops and phones were taken away.

It was learnt that they carried out the operations in Safari, Abule-Ojere, Gbokoniyi, Kemta and Alabata, all in Abeokuta, reportedly dominated by MAPOLY and FUNAAB students.

An eyewitness, who recorded a 25-second video of the raid on a building in Abule-Ojere, said the operatives carted away from a car, laptops, but could not get the suspected Internet fraudsters living in those apartments.

A student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was accosted on his way home by EFCC officials, but was later released after they searched him and could not find any incriminating material on him.

Our correspondent also obtained a 50-second video from one of the victims whose apartment was allegedly raided by the EFCC.

In the video, the victim believed to be a student of MAPOLY lamented that he was not a fraudster, but his apartment was raided.

The victim claimed that the operatives broke into his room through the windows and ransacked his apartment.

Our correspondent also obtained a video where a vehicle carrying the EFCC operatives was moving around Abeokuta.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Student Union, Johnson Idowu, said the school had not received any report of arrest of MAPOLY students by the EFCC.

He said, “We learnt that the EFCC came to Abeokuta, but there was no pictorial evidence to prove that.

“We have not received any report that our students are among those arrested.”

However, spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the operations.”

Uwujaren told our correspondent that they arrested about 30 people over alleged Advanced Free Fraud.

He said, “Yes, our people are there for an operation and made some arrests.

“At the moment, they are screening them and once they finish the screening, those who are not linked to the crime will be allowed to go home while we will continue with further investigation.”

When asked of the whereabouts of the students, Uwujaren said “I don’t think that is an issue. They are safe. About 30 people are involved.”
