Crime / Nigerian Lady Narrate How She Was Beaten Up, Stripped In Public By A Keke Driver by GistUpdates: 4:46am On Nov 15, 2019
A young Nigerian woman, Toluwalope took to Facebook to share her alleged ordeal in the hands of a Keke driver recently.

Posting photos of herself after the alleged attack, she wrote;

"For the very first time in my life I was physically assaulted by a man yesterday in public . A keke driver who got mad because I insisted he drops me at my bus stop, give me my money or put me in another keke or even take me back to where he dropped me.
A keke driver who stripped me in public because he could.
You know what, nothing will be done to him. He would walk a free man today because he's in Nigeria where criminals roam free free. (It doesn't matter that I can identify him and that I took the keke from a park, it doesn't matter that people saw him assault me, it doesn't matter ) Where people ask that we forgive and forget and leave it to God.
I've never felt this much hate for a person. I've never ever felt the urge to inflict pain on one person like I feel right now.
I can't even sleep well as I have nightmares already.
This place will break you. These animals do these things because they can and nothing, absolutely nothing will be done about it.
And please don't tell me God is preparing me for something. Don't!"

Toluwalope revealed that after she shared the post, some women rallied around her and after series of enquries and police report, the Keke driver was found. Read the rest below:

"I knew sharing my frustration on the group would make me feel better due to comforting words but never did I expect the kind of love I received even beyond Facebook.
Sister Kezie Vivian and Sis Opeyemi Iyiola showed up, when they offered help, I didn't believe they will go this far.
Sister Vivian showed up even with her baby. This touched me greatly.
I could be very shy and I knew I couldn't go to the police station to make a report myself. Sis Vivian promised to go with me. I got to the station before her, met a police woman, narratedy ordeal how the keke guy beat me up and left me with injuries and she legit asked, 'so what do you expecr us to do? ' My spirit sank and I felt this would be a waste of time till Sis Vivian came in and turned it all around. I was listened to.
Sis Vivian then followed me to the park where I took the keke from. We planned on hanging around without saying anything hoping to find him, enter his keke, make him drop us close to the station where he'll be arrested.
We stayed for hours and he didn't show up.
I went back on Saturday night and spoke to a lady who sold at the park, she was mad and asked why I didn't talk when I came on Friday with my Sis Vivian. She said she saw when it all happened. She could als identify the guy. On Sunday, he didn't show up too.
On Monday, I went back with Sis Vivian. The keke guy wasn't at work again. He obviously knew what he had done and stopped coming to work. The chairman of the park asked one of them to go and look for him wherever he was and bring him. They brought him to us.
We were taken to the keke head office at the area as they said they had to make a complaint to the union too. As soon as we got there and the complaint was made, they started beating him. I didn't asked that they beat him I only wanted him arrested but they did anyway.
He knelt at my feet begging.
Unfortunately, the keke wasn't his and it was only given to him to do business with, to remit daily. He had failed to remit for days. The keke was seized.
Guy wasn't arrested in the end but I found closure. I'm glad I didnt just sit at home crying without sharing what happened because I planned on saying nothing to anyone.
I'm glad those people at the park didn't cover him up but exposed him. I'm glad.
And I'm glad I'm a part of this group. I remember I and sister Vivian telling them when they kept begging us not to involve the police that it was not in our hands as our sisters group, Female in Nigeria is aware about this and we are representing them. The head of the council legit said he knows the group and that we should beg them.
Finsters came through for me. More were willing to get involved but I couldn't carry all along.
Just imagine if I had showed up at the keke park with 30 frowning sisters
First picture is the night I got beaten, second is with SIS Kezie Vivian on Friday when she accompanied me to the keke park."

Politics / I Sold Bread For 13 Years Before Becoming Gov ― Gov. Makinde by GistUpdates: 8:29pm On Nov 10, 2019
Oyo state governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, on Sunday, said his decision to declare free education in the state was in recognition of the huge part that education had played in his successes in life.

Making reference to his humble background, which involved him selling bread by the gate of Adeoyo state hospital, Ibadan for his first 13 years in Makinde held that only by being educated did he make headway in life.

Makinde, who spoke during the 80th thanksgiving service of his mother, Mrs Abigael Makinde, at St Paul Anglican Church, Yemetu, Ibadan, on Sunday, said he also wanted residents of the state to gain the benefits of being educated hence his declaration of free education.

He, therefore, urged parents to be much concerned about the education of their children or wards.

“For the first 13 years of my life, where we lived was not more than five minutes to where we are now. My mum was a telephone operator in the state secretariat. At Adeoyo State Hospital here, I and my brother Muyiwa also used to help her sell bread by the gate of Adeoyo State Hospital.

“What can propel a child who used to live some five minutes away from here [Yemetu] to become a governor of Oyo state is education. And that is why we have declared that free and qualitative education has come to stay in Oyo state,” Makinde said.

Speaking further, he decried that some persons were hell-bent on sabotaging his efforts to sabotage his governance.

Makinde said these efforts to frustrate the government’s efforts was epitomised in some residents who continue to intentionally dispose their waste on medians and other unauthorised places.

“Once again, I thank the good people of Oyo state for your unalloyed support for this administration. Some people don’t want this government to succeed.

‘Take for example, on my way here, I realised that some people intentionally dumped their refuse on the median. I know that it is not the people of this area that generated those wastes.

‘Some people took it as their assignment to drop those wastes there knowing that I will pass through that road today. They performed the evil act because they knew I was going to pass through the road to this place today, but we thank God for his usual support. We will continue to serve the people of the Oyo state.”

In addition, he bemoaned that some residents were keen on exploiting their religious divides to cause disaffection and disunity in the state.

He condemned those religious activists intent on causing inter-faith disharmony, assuring that the state government valued the coexistence of various religions, as it had subsisted overtime.

“I want to greet the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta state, Alhaji Dawud Akinola because he is here with us today. What this means is that those who are seeking to use religion to divide us should look for another job.

“As a government, we will do what is right and proper. There is not one family in this state that there is no Muslims or Christians, so, issues of religion cannot divide us in Oyo state.”

In his sermon titled “Occupy till I come,” Reverend Dr Samuel Osungbeju, urged leaders to serve well so as to receive the reward of God.

“Serve well and the Lord will bless you,” he said, adding the respective positions occupied by public officers are like talents given to them by God.

Though he noted that the actions and policies of the Makinde led government of Makinde were being well received by the people, Osungbeju urged Makinde not to relent in his resolve to deliver good governance.

Crime / Re: Land Grabbers Sack Landlords, Tenants From Lagos Community by GistUpdates: 4:36am On Nov 06, 2019
Crime / Land Grabbers Sack Landlords, Tenants From Lagos Community by GistUpdates: 4:36am On Nov 06, 2019
Pandemonium broke out at Mafon in the Egbe-Idimu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State last Friday when armed land grabbers, who were allegedly accompanied by policemen from the Idimu Police Division, sacked many landlords and tenants from their homes.

The action was said to have followed purported court judgment granting ownership of the land to the Frederick Ogundimu family after a 10-year tussle.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the land grabbers, while being supported by policemen, allegedly broke into houses, chased the occupants out, brought out their belongings and locked the buildings.

It was learnt that some landlords and residents, who tried to resist the land grabbers during the operation, were assaulted.

According to eyewitnesses, ever since the invasion of the community, the residents have been living in fear as the land grabbers have been doing night shifts to prevent people from gaining access into their buildings.

When PUNCH Metro visited the community on Tuesday, it was observed that many houses, shops and schools on Adekola, Akinwunmi, Monsurat Okunleye, Yomi Sofunmade and Owonikoko streets as well as adjoining streets were under lock and key.

Some displaced landlords, tenants and youths in the community were seen using the frontage of their buildings and shops as temporary abode.

A resident, Jamiu Adeyanju, alleged that a member of the Ogundimu family mobilised thugs and policemen to take over the houses, adding that landlords and tenants in the area could no longer gain access to their homes.

He added that no document was provided to back up the claim that the family had a judgment in its favour over the land.

The Oyo State indigene said, “All of a sudden, the land grabbers invaded the community with policemen from the Idimu Division and started terrorising us and said no one would enter the houses, because the land belonged to them. They chased landlords and tenants out of their houses, packed their belongings out and locked them out.

“Since Friday, we have been sleeping in front of the shut houses and shops on our streets without having access to our homes to prepare meals and bathe. The land grabbers are also watching over the area to see if anyone will act against their instructions.

“A hypertensive landlord has been hospitalised because of this issue. The Ogundimu family, which brought the land grabbers and policemen, said it had a judgment on the land, but provided no document to back up its claim. An old landlady was locked inside her house and a landlord, who was shocked by the invasion, has been hospitalised.”

Another resident, Karim Habeeb, said the land grabbers threatened to shoot anyone who dared to record the operation.

“They have been terrorising us for so many years and whenever they come, they tell us that they have taken possession; they come with thugs and the police to create tension in the community,” he stated.

Frustrated by the situation, landlords, tenants and youths in the community staged a protest on Tuesday against the uncertainty created by the land grabbers and their alleged sponsors.

A landlord, Isiaka Adeyanju, said the Ogundimu family demanded N8m from each landlord and gave a deadline of the weekend to pay N4m before they could be allowed into their homes.

The 60-year-old said, “I bought my land from the O sailorunfunmi family of Idimu and I have been living in my house for over 27 years. We were few in the community before development came to the area and it was during this period that we started hearing that another family was claiming ownership of the land. They brought a survey as proof, but when we went to check it at Alausa, the survey did not cover where our land is.

“These land grabbers and their sponsors know that we are powerless and are using their influence to torment us. They said each landlord should pay N8m or make half payment before we would be granted access to our houses. We were given this week as the deadline. We want the government to come to our aid.”

A school owner, Atinuke Adeniji, while condemning the development, said the land grabbers invaded her school premises, chased out the pupils, locked the gates and put the building up for sale.

“I was called out of my school premises to send my pupils home. I pleaded with them to allow us to close officially so that their parents could pick them, but they refused and placed the school under lock and key and mounted a banner indicating that my school building was up for sale,” Adeniji stated.

A notice on one of the affected buildings read, ‘Possession taken today, Friday, November 1, 2019, by court order,’ while another stated, ‘This is to notify the entire public that this property is hereby put up for sale by the legal owner (the estate of the late Pa Frederick Olabode Ogundimu)’, while directing further enquiries to Michael Ladipo and Co.

When PUNCH Metro contacted the Principal Partner of the legal firm, Mr Michael Ladipo, he said the due process was followed to execute the judgment after his client obtained a warrant of possession on the land.

Ladipo said, “There was a matter that was instituted in 1993 between Frederick Ogundimu and Mudasiru Amusa and four others in respect of the land in question. We got a judgment on March 15, 2002, and after the judgment, the enforcement was done in 2009.

“Everybody in the community knows about this matter. After 2009, the landlords returned and nothing happened, so we reported back to the court and got another warrant to execute, which was in 2017.

“The gates of the houses that were locked up were pasted with the second execution notice dating back to 2017, but nothing was done. So, we headed back to the court so that we could execute our warrant of possession, which was granted to us earlier this year. It was the warrant of possession that was executed on Friday and the due process was followed.

“After the execution, about 80 per cent of the landlords came for a meeting and we demanded N8m for regularisation, but they came with a counter proposal and we gave our final position to be N5m with the option of 50 per cent upfront payment.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said he would get back to our correspondent but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report despite reminders.

Politics / FRSC, Police, Military Unite Against Long Bridge Robbers by GistUpdates: 4:28am On Nov 06, 2019
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Sector Command, has said it is working with the police and the military to tackle robbers on the Long Bridge, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that robbers cash in on the gridlock between the Long Bridge and Berger Bus Stop on the expressway to dispossess motorists and commuters of their valuables.

The section is currently undergoing reconstruction by the Federal Government, hence the partial closure which causes gridlock on the ever-busy highway.

The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Hyginus Omeje, told NAN on Monday in Lagos that the corps was aware of robbery attacks against motorists on the Long Bridge and had risen to the occasion.

According to him, since the FRSC personnel do not carry arms, the corps is working with relevant agencies to clamp down on the miscreants who capitalise on the gridlock to rob people.

“Whatever we need to do to reduce gridlock across the state, we have to do it. It is because of this gridlock that miscreants attack people in traffic.

“Some of these armed miscreants dispossess people of their jewellery, phones and other valuables.

“We are aware of that and we are working with relevant sister agencies, the Nigeria Police Force and even the military, so that they can continue to provide security there since the FRSC does not carry arms,’’ Omeje said.

According to him, the corps only has pen and paper to work with.

“Ours is to ensure that the gridlock that the criminals are capitalising on is removed from the road. If the traffic is flowing, nobody will come and attack anyone.

“By the time this Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is completed and we open up six lanes, anyone that stays on the way is risking his life,’’ the FRSC boss said.
