Mr El-Rufai was detained by the EFCC over corruption allegations on Monday morning and held till Wednesday night. Armed operatives from ICPC on Wednesday night arrested former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as soon as he was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Mr El-Rufai was detained by the EFCC over corruption allegations on Monday. He was granted bail at about 8 pm on Wednesday but was immediately picked up by armed operatives from ICPC, who laid an ambush for him at the premises of the EFCC headquarters, witnesses said. It is clear that ICPC law enforcement agency rearrested the politician. A source had told our reporter that the operatives who picked him up were from the Agency. But some other sources said the agents came from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, which is also investigating the former governor for alleged corruption. The SSS recently picked a battle with the politician over allegations that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu. On Monday, the SSS charged him with cybercrimes before the Federal High Court in Abuja over the phone-tapping allegation. Phone interception allegations The case, filed as FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026, followed Mr El-Rufai’s remarks during a live Arise TV interview on Friday. He claimed that the NSA’s phone was tapped and that he heard the NSA directing security operatives to detain him. He alleged that the directive prompted an attempted arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday, where he exchanged heated words with security personnel. Witnesses said officials briefly confiscated his international passport before escorting him out amid chants from supporters. In response to the interview, SSS prosecutors filed cybercrime charges against Mr El-Rufai on Monday. The prosecution said he admitted to intercepting the NSA’s communications, failed to report others who conducted unlawful interceptions, and compromised public safety and national security by using technical systems to tap the NSA’s phone. The alleged acts were said to violate provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024, and the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003. No arraignment date has been fixed, and Mr El-Rufai has not publicly responded to the charges. Mr El-Rufai’s arrest came amid fast-paced developments following his recent return to the country from Cairo, Egypt. It started last Thursday when security operatives attempted to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, shortly after he arrived from Cairo, Egypt. Videos circulating online showed a brief confrontation between security personnel and the former governor’s entourage. His international passport was reportedly confiscated during the encounter. Mr El-Rufai later alleged that the arrest attempt was carried out at the instruction of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, through the State Security Service (SSS). Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Friday, he claimed that the NSA’s phone was allegedly tapped, allowing him to hear instructions to detain him. Mr El-Rufai’s lawyer, Ubong Akpan, condemned the attempted arrest, describing it as arbitrary and in violation of constitutional rights. According to him, the EFCC invitation was delivered to Mr El-Rufai’s residence while he was abroad, making immediate compliance impractical. The lawyer said his client had formally communicated with the EFCC to ensure voluntary attendance upon his return, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday. Mr Akpan further demanded the immediate return of Mr El-Rufai’s passport, describing its seizure as an infringement on his dignity, freedom of movement, and constitutional rights. He warned that legal action would be taken against any unlawful attempts at detention. On Monday, the State Security Service (SSS) filed cybercrime charges against Mr El-Rufai at the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged unlawful interception of the phone communications of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu. The case was filed barely three days after Mr El-Rufai said during a live interview on Arise TV, focusing on the airport encounter, that the NSA’s phone conversation was intercepted, and that he heard the NSA directing security operatives to detain him. Mr El-Rufai has faced mounting scrutiny since leaving office, including allegations of diverting N423 billion in public funds. In 2024, the Kaduna State House of Assembly demanded investigations into his administration. He has also been summoned by the ICPC for questioning. The former governor previously backed President Bola Tinubu’s emergence as the APC presidential candidate in 2023. Mr Tinubu won the presidential election and was subsequently inaugurated to office in May 2023. Both he and the president parted ways politically, with Mr El Rufai becoming Mr Tinubu’s fierce critic after the president’s initial move to appoint the former Kaduna State governor as a minister fell through. Mr El-Rufai has since joined the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), vowing to work with like-minded politicians to ensure Mr Tinubu is not re-elected in 2027.

Son Of Libya’s Late Dictator Gadhafi shot Dead By Gunmen, Political Team Says. Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son of former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, has been killed in an apparent assassination at his home in the city of Zintan in northwestern Libya, the head of his political team said on Tuesday. He was 53. Saif al-Islam Gadhafi was once seen as the heir-apparent to his dictator father, who was killed after his regime was toppled at the height of the Arab Spring protests in 2011. In recent years, he had been making a play to return to politics in Libya. Four masked assailants stormed Saif al-Islam Gadhafi’s residence and disabled security cameras before fatally shooting him in a “treacherous and cowardly” attack, his political adviser Abdullah Othman said in a social media statement. Libya’s Attorney General’s Office said Tuesday that Gadhafi died of gunshot wounds and that a full criminal investigation is underway. There has been no immediate comment from the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has long sought the younger Gadhafi’s arrest on charges of crimes against humanity. Born on June 25, 1972, in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, Saif al-Islam Gadhafi was the second son of Moammar Gadhafi, who ruled Libya from 1969 until his overthrow and death in 2011. A fluent English speaker who was educated overseas, including at the London School of Economics, Saif al-Islam Gadhafi was widely seen as a potentially more progressive figure than his father, who ruled Libya for decades with an iron fist. But on February 21, 2011, as protests spread across Libya, Saif al-Islam Gadhafi delivered a televised address warning of civil war, chaos and poverty if the uprising continued. The speech marked a decisive break from his reformist persona and aligned him publicly with the regime’s violent crackdown on demonstrators. In June 2011, the ICC issued arrest warrants for both Saif al-Islam Gadhafi and his father for crimes against humanity committed during the suppression of the revolt. Ahead of his death, Saif al-Islam Gadhafi had aspired to one day return to political life and in recent months had begun to put together “a proposal for reconciliation,” a source close to him told CNN. In Tuesday’s statement, Saif al-Islam Gadhafi’s team urged the Libyan judiciary, the international community, the United Nations and human rights organizations to launch an independent and transparent investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Akiolu’s statement is coming barely a week after he publicly humiliated the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi at an event. In a statement from Akiolu’s palace, the monarch traced the historical background of the state and why it should not be regarded as part of Yoruba land. The statement reads: “Coming from the palace, with what I was told by my late paternal grandmother who is a descendant of Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi and also reading from factual Historical books, let me share this Knowledge with you all on Eko/Lagos. “Modern day Lagos was founded by Prince Ado, the son of the Oba of Benin, Prince Ado was the first Oba of Lagos, the son of the Bini King, Prince Ado, named the town Eko until the Portuguese explorer Ruy de Segueira changed the Maritime town to Lagos, which at that time from 1942 was Portuguese expedition center down the African Coast. “It was a major centre of the slave trade until 1851. Lagos was annexed by Britain via the Lagos treaty of cession in 1861, ending the consular period and starting the British Colonial Period. The remainder of modern day Nigeria was seized in 1886 when the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established in 1914 Lagos was declared its capital due to the struggle of the Bini King. “Lagos experienced growth prior to the British Colonial rule and even more rapid growth during the Colonial rule throughout the 1960s, 70s, continued through the 80s and 90s till date. Thanks to the Awori’s, Bini’s, Yoruba’s, migrants across the nation and world at large, as no particular group of people can take the glory alone. “Lagos is made up of Lagoons and creeks. The Lagos lagoon, Lagos Harbour, five cowne creeks, Ebute-Metta creeks, Porto-Novo creeks, New canal, Badagry creeks, Kuramo waters and Light house creeks. “The Awori’s and Bini’s are known to be the first settlers of the Eko land. The Awori’s are speakers of a distinct dialect (Olukumi) close to that of the generative Yoruba language with a rich Bini mixture. Traditionally, Awori’s were found in Ile-Ife, they were known to be the Bini’s who followed their self-exiled Prince, the first son of the Ogiso (now called Oba) of Benin Kingdom, whose step-mother was after his head. “The exiled Benin Prince Izoduwa known to the Yorubas as Ooduwa (Oduduwa) was made ruler of the Ife people due to his powers and followers from the Great Benin-Kingdom. “Izoduwa (Ooduwa) was made the first King of Ile-Ife in 1230 AD. His followers from his father’s Kingdom in Benin are the today’s Awori people who settled in Eko now called Lagos. “In the 1300, the King of Benin-Empire heard from one of his traders who was a settler in Eko on how the Bini’s were treated by the Awori’s who lived in their area. Upon hearing this, the King of Benin commanded the assembling of a war expedition, led by his son, Prince Ado, which headed the settlement of the Awori’s and demanded explanation. “On arriving Eko, Prince Ado and his Army were more than received. The Aworis asked the Bini Prince to stay and become their leader. Ado agreed on the condition that they surrender their sovereignty to the Oba of Benin, to which the people agreed. Hearing this, the King of Benin gave his permission for Prince Ado and the expedition to remain in Eko. “The Oba of Benin sent some of his chiefs including the Eletu, Odibo, Obanikoro and others to assist his son, Oba Ado in the running of Eko. “From the crowing of Prince Ado as the first Oba of Lagos (then called Eko), Lagos served as a major center for slave trade from which the Aworis, the Oba of Benin and his son the Oba of Lagos and all the children/descendants who took over as his successors for over four centuries supported the trade. “The Oba of Benin was the head of the Benin Empire which are the present day Western, Southern and Eastern modern day Nigeria. The King never obliged anyone to speak the Bini language as he believed everyone was entitled to their own choice of language. “The name Eko was given to it by the first king of Lagos, Oba Ado, the young and vibrant Prince from Benin. Eko was the land now known as Lagos Island, where the king palace was built. “The palace is called Idugaran meaning “palace built on pepper farm” Oba Ado and the warriors from Benin together with the early Bini’s settlers in Eko and the Awori people settled in the southern part of Eko called “Isale Eko”. “Isale literally means bottom “. Must have been used to indicate downtown (as in down town Lagos) “Until the coming in of the Benin’s 1300AD , Lagos geographical boundary was Lagos mainland, Lagos Island, the seat of the Oba of Lagos then consisted of a pepper farm and fishing post. No one was living there. “About 1450 AD some Yorubas who hailed from Isheri in Ogun-state and Ekiti were allowed by the King to settle in Eko during a war, they came in a very large numbers thereby surpassing the numbers of the Awori’s and Bini’s. (Hence Yorubas claim to own Eko due to their numbers). “Oba Ado fell in love with a beautiful woman whose father was Awori and mother a daughter to one of the chief; they had two sons and also a daughter Erelu Kuti, who begot Ologun Kutere who later became King.” Awori were never known as Yoruba at their time of meeting with the Benin in Eko Lagos. The Benin were referred to as the Eko tribe. When the first census was taken in Lagos nothing ever suggested that anything Yoruba to be everybody in Lagos. Nowadays, faked Yoruba historians are not different from the stooges of the Colonial Masters implementing the British template of subjugation over Benin. Fabricated history is the trade of modern Yoruba historians. The Benins are not surprised because Yoruba would never give credit to the Benin, because they are serving the interest of the British and nothing more by their superiority complex of their intelligent dishonesty. The ethnic Eko tribe were the Benin. They were greater in number than the Awori and others who were later later called Yoruba. Yet Oyo and others were not Yoruba in 1891. According to both oral Edo and Awori history, the territory known today as Lagos (Eko) was founded by the Great Benin Kingdom during the reign of Oba Orhogbua in the 16th century. The name Eko, meaning “war camp” in the Edo language, was given to the island by Oba Orhogbua himself, who established it as a military base during his westward naval expeditions that stretched to Dahomey (present-day Port Novo). Prior to the colonial creation of the term “Yoruba” in the 19th century, the Awori were a distinct group with strong Benin royal connections. Oral history holds that the Awori migrated from Ile-Ife, but their roots can be traced even further back to Ubini (Benin). They were among the followers of Prince Ekaladerhan (later deified as Oduduwa), the exiled son of Ogiso Owodo, the last ruler of the Ogiso dynasty of Benin. When the Awori migrated from Ife after internal conflicts, they moved under the leadership of Olofin Olufunminire and settled first at Isheri. There, a mystical incident involving a floating or disappearing bowl earned them the name “Awori” meaning “the ones who floated/sank.” From there, they journeyed southward and eventually reached the Lagos Island. Upon arrival, the Awori found signs of prior occupation food wrapping leaves floating on the lagoon. Upon investigating, they discovered that the Benin army under Oba Orhogbua had already established a base on the island. This reinforced the claim that Eko (Lagos) was a Benin outpost and not an unclaimed land. Historically, the Awori acknowledged Benin sovereignty over the territory and paid Isakole (royalty or tribute) to the Oba of Benin, which is documented up until the colonial period. This act confirms the authority of the Benin monarchy over Lagos prior to British interference and subsequent political restructuring. Before the 1800s, there was no unified Yoruba identity as it is known today. The Awori spoke a mixture of Benin (Edo) and Olukumi, not the standardized Yoruba language we know today. The term “Yoruba” was coined and popularized in the 19th century by Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther to create a common language for missionary and colonial purposes. This language eventually absorbed various dialects Awori, Ijebu, Oyo, Egba, and others forming the modern Yoruba linguistic identity. It is important to note that the Egba were among the last groups to accept the “Yoruba” identity, and this was mostly for political convenience, not historical or ethnic lineage. Early colonial censuses even listed the Awori separately from the Yoruba until recent homogenization efforts. The name “Benin” is a Portuguese adaptation of the Edo name “Ubini”, which was institutionalized by Oba Ewedo, the fifth Oba of the Benin dynasty. He renamed the kingdom from its older names (like Igodomigodo and Ile Idu) to Ubini, following his victory over Chief Ogiamien and relocation of the royal palace from Usama to Ogbe, near the ancient gateway of Utantan. Over time, Ubini became colloquially pronounced as Bini, and eventually recorded by Europeans as Benin. By the 2006 Palace Memo, the use of “Bini” has been officially phased out in favor of the historically and internationally recognized “Benin”, reaffirming its imperial identity. The misconception between “Ibinu” (said to be coined by Oranmiyan in an Olukumi dialect) and “Ubini” stems from linguistic confusion or misrepresentation. According to Edo historian Jacob Egharevba (1968, p. 10), it was Oba Ewedo who formalized the name Ubini, not Oranmiyan. In fact, Oranmiyan never ruled Benin as a crowned Oba, and he eventually left, leaving behind his son Eweka I, the founder of the current Oba dynasty. The long-standing myth that Obas of Benin are descendants of Oduduwa is a historical inversion. Edo oral tradition and documented history affirm that Oduduwa (Ekaladerhan) was a Benin prince, not the ancestor of Benin royalty. His departure from Ubini and rise in Ile-Ife happened after the Ogiso dynasty, not before. Therefore, the connection is Benin to Ife, not Ife to Benin. "In Nigeria: America is in charge of security. France is in charge of taxes. UAE is in charge of healthcare. In his post, Odinkalu listed several areas of national life and linked them to foreign countries or individuals. He suggested that security matters appear to be influenced by the United States, he also implied that France plays a major role in Nigeria’s tax system, according to him, healthcare decisions increasingly favour the United Arab Emirates. These statements were not presented as official facts, but as criticism of government direction and dependence. Odinkalu also mocked Nigeria’s intelligence system, he referred to a controversial reports of Onitsha based someone overseeing intelligence that lead to bombing of parts of Sokoto. He accused President Bola Tinubu of encouraging political defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and suggested that this strategy weakens opposition parties and limits democratic competition. The United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs has reacted to the recent abduction of 166 worshippers from two churches in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna by some suspected terrorists. The House committee in a post on X reiterated President Donald Trump’s proclamation that the US would not stand and watch the continued persecution and killing of Christians in Nigeria by Islamic terrorists. According to the House, these killings by terrorists operating in the northern part of the country will not be tolerated It said, “This past Sunday, Islamic terrorists in Nigeria raided churches and kidnapped more than 168 Christians. “President Trump made it clear: We cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria. The United States will not tolerate the massacre of innocent Christians,” the committee noted. Trump had in the past made proclamations on Nigeria over the alleged persecution of Christians across the country. Having declared Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern, the US government on December 26, also carried out an air strike which targeted terrorists in their suspected enclave in Sokoto State. Weeks after the airstrike, terrorists carried out a large-scale abduction in Kajuru, with a total of 177 worshippers kidnapped from the Cherubim and Seraphim Church 1 and Cherubim and Seraphim Church 2 in Kurmin Wali Community, Kajuru LGA on January 18. Sources privy to the incident said 11 of the victims who were kidnapped managed to escape leaving 166 others – including women and children – in captivity. While the police and the Kaduna state government have confirmed the abductions, the leadership of the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for the immediate rescue of the worshippers.

Peter Obi Leads As ADC Kicks Off Campaign Ahead Of FCT Elections. The 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Peter Obi on Wednesday, led members and supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on a campaign tour within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). With the FCT council elections slated to hold on February 21, Obi, who recently defected from the Labour Party to the ADC, visited the popular Kugbo furniture market, which was recently affected by a fire outbreak. The election will take place in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali – the six area councils across the FCT. According to Obi, he was in Kugbo in solidarity with the traders who suffered devastating losses running into millions of naira following a recent fire incident. He wrote on X, “At a time when many Nigerians are grappling with deepening hardship and poverty, such losses are especially painful. The traders shared their experiences and the circumstances surrounding the incident, and I appreciated their resilience and warm reception. I reassured them that, despite the setback, they will recover and thrive again with the right support. “This incident once again underscores my consistent call for a comprehensive reform of our emergency response systems. A nation that truly cares for its people must invest in efficient, well-coordinated emergency services that respond promptly and effectively to crises, saving lives and livelihoods,” Obi noted. The former Anambra State governor visited the market alongside Moses Paul, the chairmanship candidate for the ADC in the Abuja Municipal Area Council poll. Obi said the team used the opportunity to strengthen engagement ahead of the election “We must work towards a Nigeria where preventable tragedies are prevented, and where institutions function as they should for the benefit of all,” he added.

Speaking to New Telegraph on Thursday, Adamu dismissed the claims as false and an attempt to gain attention via social media. He firmly stated, “I am not an ungrateful politician,” emphasizing his loyalty and commitment to his political journey. Adamu, a two-term governor of Nasarawa State and Senator under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has a long-standing political career, having served as the Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) during the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. This is because it is the only contender that fully meets the provisions of Section 8(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The said section mandates that any state creation request must carry the endorsement of two-thirds of elected representatives from the proposed area across all legislative tiers and local governments. The proposed Adada State which is located in the northern part of Enugu state and has boundaries with Kogi, Benue and Ebonyi States, also ranks highest in several other key variables being considered for the creation of a new state. Information from sources within the National Assembly committee handling the creation of the additional state in the South-East geopolitical zone reveals that #ADADA #STATE is the only area at the moment that has met both the constitutional requirements and other factors of consideration. It is important to note that since the concept of Adada State was conceived and championed by Senator Isaiah Ani between 1979-1983, it has consistently enjoyed the endorsement of two-thirds of elected representatives from the proposed area across all legislative tiers and local governments that make up the proposed state. At the 2014 National Conference, Adada State also ranked first among other contenders from the South-East geopolitical zone and would likely have been created if not for the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election. However, key actors in the committee are attempting to undermine the fact that Adada State is the most constitutionally favoured option, seemingly due to their personal interests. The good news, however, is that their efforts are proving difficult, as the areas they are projecting for creation as the sixth state of the South-East geopolitical zone do not meet the requirements of Section 8(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). It is no longer news that the proposed Anim-Oma State, being promoted by Senator Osita Izunaso of Orlu zone in Imo State and Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta North zone in Delta State, has effectively hit a dead end (Rock of Gibraltar). This is because elected representatives of Delta North, across all legislative tiers and local government areas, have vehemently opposed any arrangement that seeks to merge Anioma with any part of the South-East for the purpose of state creation. They described suggestions of merging Anioma with the South-East as “non-negotiable,” and contrary to the historical and cultural identity of the Anioma people. The statement, endorsed by all elected representatives from Delta North, follows renewed national conversations and legislative engagements on the creation of additional states across the country. Meanwhile, the proponents and sponsors of Etiti State are also facing a Herculean task in convincing stakeholders from the areas that are expected to make up the proposed state. Many of these communities are satisfied with their current status within their respective states and fear the possibility of being shortchanged or reduced to a minority position in the new arrangement. It is therefore worrisome that the key actors in the committee responsible for presenting the most constitutionally qualified area in the South-East geopolitical zone for the creation of a sixth state have chosen to align themselves with a setback position, rather than recommend Adada State, which remains the most constitutionally qualified area for state creation. Those close to Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu should advise him to take the path of honour by respecting the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandate that any request for state creation must have the endorsement of two-thirds of the elected representatives from the proposed area across all legislative tiers and local governments. It is important to note that presenting #ADADA #STATE as the most constitutionally qualified area for creation as the sixth state of the South-East geopolitical zone remains the easiest and most straightforward route for the committee. Any attempt to promote an alternative option only complicates the process. Undoubtedly, the refusal to acknowledge this fact is a major reason for the delay in the creation of the long-awaited sixth state, despite the readiness of Mr. President and the National Assembly to ensure that the South-East is brought at par with other geopolitical zones.

Another house was also demolished in Anoguele Street, Iyakpi, South-Ibie, belonging to a cultist named Kuwat, who was said to be a member of the Eiye Confraternity. When security agents arrived at his residence, Kuwat had already fled. The suspect was named as the main mastermind of the recent killing of the barber. A property in the Ogodomiza Area in Ibie-Nafe belonging to another cult leader was also demolished. The house was earlier raided a day before, which led to the arrest of two young men, Momoh Austin (17) and Joseph Oyazojo (21). The suspects confessed that they were brought to the area to engage in cybercrime activities commonly referred to as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’. Authorities also conducted a related sweep at Hybrid Hotel and Suites in Elele, Uzairue, where suspects were arrested. Speaking after the demolition exercise at Egbiadokhai Street, Secretary of the State Security Squad, John Izegaegbe, said the Governor gave 166 days of grace to all cultists to renounce, offering soft loans and skills training. “That window was ignored. Now, desperate times call for desperate action. This demolition is a warning to all landlords and cultists, stay out of cultism or face the full wrath of the law.” He emphasised that the house was directly linked to the murder in Auchi earlier in the week, with evidence including weapons and cult insignia found on-site. Another member of the security squad, Eribo Emwanta advised parents and hotel owners to be vigilant. “We are cleaning out these communities, and hotels harboring criminals are next,” he vowed.
