Politics / CBN Policy: “Next Few Months Will Be Difficult For Nigerians” – Gov. Obaseki by Gjrich(m): 11:18am On Mar 05 |
CBN Policy: “Next Few Months Will Be Difficult For Nigerians” – Obaseki, Gives Reasons. Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has criticized the recent decision by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to raise the interest rate to 22.75 percent, labeling it as ‘detrimental’ to the nation’s economy. Addressing attendees at the annual Edo Zone Bankers’ Committee Dinner in Benin, Obaseki expressed concerns over the potential negative impact of the CBN’s decision on businesses and the overall economy. He attributed the anticipated tough times ahead to what he deemed as unfavorable economic policies implemented by both the federal government and the CBN. “The next few months will be difficult because the policies rolled out by CBN will unfortunately not support growth in our economy. The interest rate is already high and jacking it up will not allow small businesses access to credit to make them grow,” The CBN’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) had recently announced a significant increase in the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by four hundred basis points, from 18.75 percent to 22.75 percent. Obaseki emphasized that the policies adopted by the CBN would hinder economic growth, particularly by limiting access to credit for small businesses. He advocated for a shift towards policies that prioritize increasing production and reducing dependence on imports, emphasizing the importance of focusing on productive activities beyond just exchange rates. The governor expressed concerns over the potential negative impact of increasing cash reserves on the economy, suggesting a focus on fiscal measures to foster economic growth instead. Furthermore, Obaseki urged commercial banks to innovate and introduce products and services aimed at alleviating the economic challenges faced by the majority of citizens across the country.

Politics / Abia Power Project's Success Can Be Replicated In Lagos And Others- Barth Nnaji by Gjrich(m): 5:26pm On Mar 04 |
Geometric Abia power Project’s Success Can Be Replicated In Lagos, Other State-Barth Nnaji A former Minister of Power, Prof Barth Nnaji, has said the newly inaugurated 181 megawatts power plant in Aba, Abia State can be reproduced in Lagos and other states of the country. Nnaji, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Geometric Power Limited, the owner of the Aba power plant, in an interview with Sunrise Daily said replicating the project across the country will be a good way of getting out of the reliance on the national grid. He said: “It’s a blotter, an ink approach. So, if you drop ink on a part of a blotter, then it begins to spread. And if you drop it at various places, then eventually the entire blotter will have ink. If I look at the project that we have here, you can do the same thing in Lagos. “You can do it in Eko, you can do it in Ikeja, you can do it in Kano, you can do it in Kaduna, various places where you have economic activities, industrial activities. “If you begin to look at the possibility of all of them eventually expanding, then that’s what can help the country. You need to have a tight generation and distribution, not a generation that has no direct relationship between generation and distribution. “It is possible for this to be replicated throughout the country. And it will be a very good way to not have to rely on the national grid power arrangement.” A new electricity distribution company, Aba Power Limited Electric has started taking electricity from the plant and supplying it to about nine of the 17 local government areas in the South-East state. According to Nnaji, the power plant’s 188 megawatts capacity is more than the required power needed for the nine LGAs. He said the capacity is almost two-thirds of what Enugu Electricity is currently serving the five South-East states. “By the time we finish installing, we have 188 megawatts capacity, that’s almost two-thirds of what Enugu Disco is serving five states in the East. The way to ensure reliability is that you have to have more than just adequate power. “You have to have more than the requirement of the area. It must be more. So, because you cannot predict peak load for power always, people can just decide to do something and drop power.”

Lagos State Govt To Enforce Monthly House Rent Payment. To Be Implemented In December, 2024 The Lagos state government has made it known that it will enforce monthly rental payments. In a recent press briefing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Housing, shared exciting news about the upcoming monthly rental system. Set to be implemented by the end of 2024 or early next year, this initiative aims to transform the way rent is collected Barakat emphasized the inspiration drawn from other countries where rent is collected regularly, and the plan is to follow suit. According to her, monthly leasing will be rolled out based on tenants’ earnings, making it more adaptable and fair. The first phase will be a trial run within the public sector, ensuring a smooth operation before extending it to private rentals. Reassuring the public, Barakat mentioned that the N5 billion allocated for the monthly rental plan remains untouched. She explained that the slow start is a sign of the government’s dedication to perfecting the system, emphasizing that the initiative is progressing steadily despite the challenges. The overall goal is to bring positive changes to the housing sector in Lagos. She stated, “The previous government that launched the monthly leasing program was about to end when the system was to be implemented. Now that we have a new administration, the governor wants the program to go into action by the end of the year or early next year.”

Politics / Abia State Governor Proposes Statewide Light Rail Project In Abia State by Gjrich(m): 6:20am On Mar 03 |
Abia State Governor Proposes Statewide Light Rail Project following Power Generation Milestone. Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionize transportation infrastructure with the proposal of a groundbreaking light rail construction project spanning the entirety of the state. This significant announcement comes hot on the heels of the inauguration of the 181-megawatt Geometric Power plant in Aba, the bustling commercial hub of Abia State. In an exclusive interview on the Thursday edition of “Politics Today” on Channels Television, Governor Otti disclosed his administration’s ongoing discussions with a prominent Chinese company to materialize the ambitious light rail project, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to fulfilling key campaign promises. “We are discussing with a Chinese company and the discussions are going on well. It is not going to be easy, but it is going to be done. It is not something that you will just start and finish today,” Otti affirmed during the interview. The revelation was prompted by a question from the program’s anchor regarding Otti’s electoral pledge to initiate the construction of a light rail system if elected as governor of Abia State. Governor Otti further expounded on the progress of the project, emphasizing that while challenges may arise, his administration is resolute in its determination to see the project through to fruition. “Currently, the designs for the light rail project are in the process of being developed. We will move from there to address commercial issues, and at the end of the day, we will do it,” Otti asserted with confidence. The proposed light rail project is poised to usher in a new era of economic development and connectivity for Abia State, which has long grappled with infrastructural deficits under previous administrations. Meanwhile, Governor Otti has declared an end to the era of chronic power outages in the state following the recent commissioning of the 181-megawatt Geometric Power plant in Aba. “Power outage will be the exception rather than the rule,” Otti declared emphatically during the interview, underscoring the transformative impact of the power generation milestone on the lives of Abia State residents. The $800 million power project, spearheaded by Geometric Power Limited, boasts the capacity to generate and distribute sufficient electricity to significantly ameliorate the state’s power supply woes. A critical component of the project is the 27-kilometer natural gas pipeline vital for the plant’s operation. Governor Otti recounted the project’s tumultuous history, shedding light on his involvement in securing funding for the initiative back in 2010. Despite encountering unforeseen challenges such as the sale of the Aba Invest Island and shifting priorities in gas supply, Otti remained steadfast in his commitment to overcoming obstacles and delivering on his promise of reliable electricity for Abia State. Since assuming office in May 2023, Otti has prioritized resolving the lingering issues surrounding the power project and fostering collaboration with the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to ensure a consistent supply of natural gas. Currently, the Geometric Power plant generates 141 megawatts of electricity, with plans underway to expand capacity to the full 181 megawatts upon the installation of the final turbine. Residents have already begun to experience the tangible benefits, enjoying extended periods of uninterrupted power supply. This monumental achievement marks a turning point for Abia State, heralding a future characterized by reliable electricity and the potential for economic growth, particularly in Aba, the state’s industrial nerve center. Governor Otti has been lauded for his visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to progress position Abia State on a trajectory towards prosperity and sustainable development.

Politics / Re: Foreign Investors Are Moving To Aba, Thanks To The 24/7 Geometric Power Supply. by Gjrich(m): 10:48pm On Mar 01 |
What surprised me most was the inability of Genco and Disco to merge to generate and supply light to Nigeria. 2. Why is the federal government of Nigeria finding it difficult to set up a power plant like Geometric IPP of just (880 million dollars) in every state capital? 3. Now that Power has been removed from the Exclusive list to the Concurrent list. Why State Governors can not build a power plant? If a private individual can do it. |

Politics / I Will Restructure Nigeria, But A Good Foundation Must Be Laid - Tinubu. by Gjrich(m): 11:01pm On Feb 29 |
I Will Restructure Nigeria, But A Good Foundation Must Be Laid - Tinubu. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday, assured Nigerians that his administration would restructure the country as earlier promised, but noted that a good foundation must be laid. The President gave the assurance during a visit to the National Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, the Ondo State capital. After the closed-door meeting with some selected leaders of the group, the National Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr Jare Ajayi, quoted the President as having assured Nigerians that he would still restructure but that certain structures need to be put in place. Quoting the President, Ajayi said: “On the issues of restructuring, the President said that he is aware of the need to restructure Nigeria but that a good foundation must be laid before bringing the restructuring in place such that if it is done in a rush without a proper foundation, the restructuring may collapse very soon but it would be done. “He (Tinubu) said that when he took the oath of office, he (Tinubu) pledged his allegiance to Nigeria, that he knows what he is facing. “Tinubu said: “I prayed for it, I danced for it, I campaigned for it and I got it. I know the enormous responsibility. So, don’t pity me, Baba (Fasoranti), just sit down and relax. “He (Tinubu) assured Nigerians that he understood the struggle and that he is trying to build the structures that will not be reversed. “The President said that the structure he is trying to put in place in Nigeria economically, socially and politically would be such that it would bring Nigeria back to where it is supposed to be. “On the hardship Nigerians are facing, he (Tinubu) appreciates the pains Nigerians are going through and said that very soon, Nigeria will overcome it; that is a matter of time. He said that the kind of the policies government is implementing will bring positive solutions to the challenges. “He said that Nigerians should grow our foods. That we should eat the food we grow. Doing so would wean us from depending on foods from foreign sources.” In his response, Pa Fasoranti said: “Your performance so far has shown that you understand the full gravity of your mandate which is to show the Nigerian people that a good government is possible. “In Yorubaland, we do not seek for any special treatment or unfair advantage. We know you are our own, but you now belong to all Nigerians. Your mandate was freely given by the people of Nigeria and blessed by God. Therefore, Mr President continue to govern fairly and courageously and with the fear of God. That is what we expect, that is what we know you will do. “You know that since the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, the Yoruba people, led by Afenifere, have been at the forefront of the campaign for the restructuring of Nigeria. “It is now incumbent on you to address this issue of constitutional reforms with courage, fairness and determination. “We know we cannot return to the past, but we have to seek a future where regional competitions would bring out the best in our country as it did during the First Republic. “We seek, therefore, a true Federal Republic that would reflect fiscal federalism. We believe a review of the 2014 National Constitutional Conference would help you in charting the course. “For the people of the South-West, restructuring also has a more pressing meaning. Today, Nigeria has a population of 200 million which would double in the next 25 years to 400 million. “However, the South-West is facing an avalanche of migration from the other zones of the country to the extent that in 25 years, if the current trend continues, the South-West would be home to 50 per cent of the population of Nigeria. “We need to be prepared so that our region would not be overwhelmed by imported challenges. “We want each of the geopolitical zones to have greater responsibilities for security, food production and infrastructural development. “Since the removal of fuel subsidy, which was costing Nigeria $10 billion yearly, the state governments have been receiving hefty allocations from the Federation account. “Mr President should persuade the governors to allow this change of fortune for the states to reflect at the grassroots so that life can be better for our people. They should not just buy rice and yams for the people. “Mr President, thank you for this visit. You owe a duty to posterity to serve Nigeria with all your strength and wisdom.” 1 Like

Politics / JUST IN: FG Bans Cooking Gas Export To Crash Price. by Gjrich(m): 9:48pm On Feb 24 |
The Federal Government has banned the exportation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, popularly called cooking gas, in a bid to increase its volume domestically to warrant a crash in price. It stated on Thursday that LPG producers in Nigeria and key stakeholders in the industry had been told to stop exporting the commodity out of Nigeria, following the recent jump in the cost of cooking gas. Findings showed that the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas in Abuja, Lagos, Kano and some other states had climbed to about N18,000. It was specifically N17,500 in Abuja on Thursday, a product that sold for less than N9,000 in November last year. LPG dealers under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers had predicted mid-last year that a 12.5kg cylinder would cost N18,000 going by the incessant hikes in its cost. To tackle this, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, constituted a committee in November 2023, headed by the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed. But up till today (Thursday), the cost of the commodity has maintained a northward movement, as many LPG users are gradually shifting to the use of charcoal. But while speaking on the sidelines of the internal stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja on Thursday, Ekpo stated that the Federal Government had asked LPG producers to stop exporting the commodity. He named some international oil companies including Mobil, Shell, and Chevron as producers, stressing that the government was interfacing with them to crash cooking gas prices. In November 2023, a kilogramme of cooking gas was about N700, but the product is now sold at about N1,400/kg. Some operators stated that the cost would increase further if the government failed to intervene. Ekpo said, “With the issue of gas, you have seen the demonstration of the Federal Government by withdrawing all taxes and levies from the importation of gas-related equipment. It is a big incentive. “On the issue of LPG (cooking gas), we are interacting with the critical sectors to ensure that there is no exportation of LPG. All LPG produced within the country will have to be domesticated. And when this is done, the volume will increase and, of course, the price will automatically crash. “I’m in contact with the regulator, NMDPRA, we have meetings almost daily with the producers of the gas like Mobil, Chevron and Shell. So there is that hope that things will turn around. “And that is also why we are having this engagement to know exactly what the problems are so that we can address them once and for all.” 1 Like

Health / 42,000 Nurses Have Left Nigeria Since Tinubu Become President- Nursing Council R by Gjrich(m): 9:15pm On Feb 21 |
The Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Faruk Abubakar, revealed on Tuesday that a staggering 42,000 nurses have left Nigeria over the past three years. His comments were in response to the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) protest against the new certification verification guidelines issued by the Council. According to a recent circular from the NMCN, candidates who want their certificates verified by international nursing boards and councils must have two years of qualifying experience in addition to paying a non-refundable application fee. According to Faruk Abubakar, the move is in line with international best practices, emphasizing the need for retaining skilled nursing professionals within the country. Abubakar expressed concern about the significant number of nurses leaving Nigeria and emphasized the responsibility of providing quality healthcare services to the Nigerian population. He cited instances where nurses with fake documents were found abroad, highlighting the need for a rigorous verification process before nurses leave the country. The Registrar affirmed the Council’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerian nurses are adequately equipped and registered before working abroad, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the quality of healthcare services within the country. |
Politics / Bola Tinubu Has No Clear Ideas On How To Avert Naira’s Free Fall – Atiku by Gjrich(m): 8:44pm On Feb 21 |
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said President Bola Tinubu has no clear ideas on how to solve the foreign exchange crisis which has affected the naira and exacerbated the economic crisis in the country. He proffered several ways the government can save the currency from further fall. Atiku spoke yesterday against the backdrop of Tinubu‘s meeting last Thursday with governors and other stakeholders to address the foreign exchange crisis and the problem of economic downturn. On his handle on the X platform, Atiku canvassed a managed-floating foreign exchange system and ensuring sufficient FX reserves as contained in his policy document titled: My Covenant With Nigerians”, with which he campaigned as presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023. The former vice president stated that when the government is ready to open itself to sound counsels, control internal bleedings caused by corruption and poorly negotiated foreign loans, the Nigerian economy would begin to find a footing again. Atiku said Tinubu failed, yet again, to showcase any concrete policy steps that his administration is taking to contain the crises of currency fluctuation and poverty that face the country. “Rather, he told the country and experts who have been offering ideas on how to resolve the crisis that he and his team should not be distracted and allowed time to continue cooking their cocktail that has brought untold hardship to the people of Nigeria. I don‘t agree with that,” he noted. The PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election said Tinubu‘s wrong policies continue to cause untold pain and distress on the economy and „the rest of us cannot keep quiet when, clearly, the government has demonstrated sufficient poverty of ideas to redeem the situation.” Offering solutions, Atiku said, “If the government will not hold on to their usual hubris, there are ways that the country can walk out of the current crisis. “After a careful assessment of the state of our economy at the twilights of the last administration, I knew full well that the economy of the country was heading for the ditch and came up with a number of policy prescriptions that would rescue the country from getting into the mess that we are currently in. “Those ideas, encapsulated in my policy document titled: My Covenant With Nigerians made the following prescriptions: “I had signed on to a commitment to reform the operation of the foreign exchange market. Specifically, there was a commitment to eliminate multiple exchange rate windows. The system only served to enrich opportunists, rent-seekers, middlemen, arbitrageurs, and fraudsters. A fixed exchange rate system would be out of the question. First, it would not be in line with our philosophy of running an open, private sector friendly economy. Secondly, operating a successful fixed-exchange rate system would require sufficient FX reserves to defend the domestic currency at all times. But as is well known, Nigeria’s major challenge is the persistent FX illiquidity occasioned by limited foreign exchange inflows to the country. Without sufficient FX reserves, confidence in the Nigerian economy will remain low, and Naira will remain under pressure. The economy will have no firepower to support its currency. Besides, a fixed-exchange rate system is akin to running a subsidy regime! On the other hand, given Nigeria’s underlying economic conditions, adopting a floating exchange rate system would be an overkill. We would have encouraged the Central Bank of Nigeria to adopt a gradualist approach to FX management. A managed-floating system would have been a preferred option. In simple terms, in such a system, the Naira may fluctuate daily, but the CBN will step in to control and stabilise its value. Such control will be exercised judiciously and responsibly, especially to curb speculative activities.” He added that Tinubu’s new policy FX management policy was hurriedly put together without proper plans and consultations with stakeholders. Atiku noted that the government failed to anticipate or downplay the potential and real negative consequences of its actions. The government did not allow the CBN the independence to design and implement a sound FX Management Policy that would have dealt with such issues as increasing liquidity, curtailing/regulating demand, dealing with FX backlogs and rate convergence. I firmly believe that if and when the Government is ready to open itself to sound counsels, as well as control internal bleedings occasioned by corruption and poorly negotiated foreign loans, the Nigerian economy would begin to find a footing again,“ Atiku said. 1 Share

If you have knowledge of advance fiscal and Monetary ECONOMICS, you will understand that the hardship in Nigeria is just starting. No sane country will float their currency as a national policy and remove subsidy in a sector like ENERGY at the same. These two policies at the same time is like trying to conserve OXYGEN by holding someone’s noise tight hoping that the person can also breath through the anus. On the issue of subsidy removal, Tinubu acted like a promiscuous Nigerian male undergraduate who simply rushed out to buy CONDOM and changed his bedsheets simply because someone told him that he sighted his girl friend in their neighborhood. On the issue of subsidy removal, Tinubu acted like a promiscuous Nigerian male undergraduate who simply rushed out to buy CONDOM and changed his bedsheets simply because someone told him that he sighted his girl friend in their neighborhood. No plan of the said girl friend's visiting initially. No consideration of whether the girl is in that neighborhood just to buy sanitary pads. Acting before planning at the extreme. With time tissue paper may be sold at N12,000 per unit. Ph. Ph.D. or professorship can not guarantee the quality of economic advice or policy implementation. |
