Security operatives on Saturday sealed off the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja, the proposed venue of a special convention organised by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, where former President Goodluck Jonathan was expected to be ratified as the party’s consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Police officers barricaded all access routes leading to the facility, deploying several patrol vans to block entry from both the Wuse and Maitama axes of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The action effectively prevented party members, delegates, and supporters expected at the convention from gaining access to the venue. Other motorists and road users were also affected by the restrictions.

A police officer stationed at the entrance of the event centre told LEADERSHIP Weekend that no political event had been approved to hold at the facility.

“There is no such event holding here today,” the officer said when asked about the planned PDP gathering.

The development came barely 24 hours after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, warned hotels, event centres, and owners of public facilities against allowing their premises to be used by what he described as illegal organisations.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister stressed that land allocations within the FCT were meant strictly for lawful activities and warned that violators risked losing their property titles.

“Going forward, the title documents of any event centre, hotel, or public building used for the gathering of illegal organisations will be revoked,” the statement said.

According to Olayinka, the directive forms part of efforts to strengthen security and support law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and public order within the nation’s capital.

He added that authorities would closely monitor the use of public venues to prevent gatherings capable of undermining security or disrupting public order.

With political activities ahead of the 2027 general election gathering momentum, the FCT Administration also urged owners of hotels and event centres to transact only with the leadership of political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and to maintain proper documentation of all bookings.

“Owners of these facilities are therefore urged to take cognisance of the legality of organisations seeking to use their facilities and their intended purpose before letting them out,” Olayinka stated.

“Failure to comply with this directive will result in the revocation of the title documents of such properties.”

The warning came a day before the Turaki-led PDP faction scheduled its convention to formally endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan as its consensus presidential candidate at the Abuja venue.

The factional move is expected to deepen divisions within the opposition party, as another bloc reportedly aligned with Wike has already adopted Sandy Onor as its preferred presidential candidate.

Former Minister of Transportation and presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress, Rotimi Amaechi, on Thursday, pledged to transform Nigeria within four years if elected in the 2027 general election.

Amaechi made the promise shortly after submitting his nomination forms at the national headquarters of the ADC in Abuja, where he also took a swipe at the administration of President Bola Tinubu, blaming it for the country’s worsening economic hardship.

The former Rivers State governor said the 2027 election should be based on competence, experience and performance rather than ethnic or regional sentiments.

What Nigerians should do is assess all of us who are running for office based on our records,” he said.

“Nearly everybody who is running for the office of the president has served Nigeria in one way or another. Let this be a referendum. If you have performed, whoever has outperformed the other, vote for the person.”


Amaechi argued that his years in public office had prepared him for the task of leading the country, citing his tenure as governor and later as Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The next thing is, who is capable of delivering the votes? Who is capable of beating the incumbent? Who has the experience? I believe I am the most experienced.

“I am young, I am the most experienced, and I believe I have the capacity. Go back to Rivers State and see what I have done. Go back to the Ministry of Transportation and see what I have done, and assess it and see whether I can turn the country around. And I will, in four years, turn the country around,” he declared.

Amaechi, who served as governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, was a key figure in the formation of the All Progressives Congress and later served as Director-General of late President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2015 campaign council.

As Minister of Transportation between 2015 and 2023, he oversaw major railway projects, including the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan rail lines, although critics questioned the rising debt associated with some of the infrastructure projects.

Speaking on the state of the nation, the former minister criticised what he described as the growing hardship under the Tinubu administration, saying Nigerians were bearing the brunt of economic policies that had worsened living conditions.

“Nigerians should vote for merit, not vote for those who say, ‘I’m from this place’ or ‘it is our turn.’

“It is the ‘Emilokan’ mentality that brought us here. It is our turn that brought us here. Now Nigerians are suffering,” he said.

According to him, the country’s economic realities cut across religious and ethnic divides.

“There is no market for Christians, nor is there a market for Muslims, nor a market for northerners or southerners. The market has only one purpose — the naira. Nigerians are suffering.

“The current president has put us in this suffering. I don’t know why he wants to run again. I don’t even know why the APC wants to participate. They should be ashamed and allow other Nigerians to participate and change the country,” Amaechi added.

On the forthcoming ADC presidential primaries, Amaechi said he preferred a direct primary process but would accept a consensus arrangement if it favoured him.

“I’m going for primary. If the consensus is me, fine. But if it’s not me, I’m going for primary,” he said.

Amaechi’s declaration comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties seeking to build stronger coalitions capable of challenging the ruling APC.

The ADC has recently attracted several high-profile politicians positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle, as debates over economic reforms, insecurity and governance continue to dominate the political landscape.

The Enugu State Government has unveiled plans to commence construction of a 660-megawatt coal-fired power plant in July, in a move aimed at boosting electricity supply, industrialisation and long-term economic growth in the state.

Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah disclosed the plan during a solidarity visit by the Organised Private Sector Nigeria (OPSN) at the Government House in Enugu, describing the project as a critical pillar of the administration’s strategy to transform the state into a major economic and industrial hub.

The governor said the project would be completed within 24 months, with the target of commissioning the plant by 2027.

“But we have gone beyond just setting up the electricity market to now being interested in producing the electricity here. I am pleased to inform you that in July we are going to be breaking ground for a 660MW coal-fired power plant,” Mbah said.


“The outlay in terms of time for building the plant is 24 months. So, our target is to commission that power plant 24 months after the groundbreaking in July.”

According to him, the project is expected to significantly improve electricity reliability for both residential and industrial consumers in the state while reducing energy costs.

“What that simply means is that post-2027, you will not have your power go off in Enugu, whether for businesses or for residential. You are also going to have affordable electricity because it is going to be by far the cheapest in the country,” he said.

The planned plant will leverage Enugu’s extensive coal deposits, historically one of the state’s key natural resources, to support power generation and broader industrial expansion.

Mbah noted that the state had already taken steps to establish its own electricity market following constitutional and legislative reforms that decentralised aspects of Nigeria’s power sector.

He said Enugu was the first subnational government in Nigeria to establish an electricity market after amendments to the Constitution and the Electricity Act transferred electricity from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List, allowing states to participate across the power value chain, including generation, transmission and distribution.

The governor also addressed environmental concerns often associated with coal-fired plants, arguing that Enugu’s coal reserves are among the cleanest globally due to their low sulphur content and high calorific value.

“The interesting thing about our coal is that we have the best quality of coal in the world. Our sulfur content is less than 0.5 percent. With 1 percent you are happy, but this one is 0.5 percent. The only country that comes close is Japan,” he said.

“So, instead of just exporting our coal, we are going to be benefiting from it by adding value, generating electricity with it.”

Mbah added that the project followed about two years of technical studies and strategic planning, including the acquisition of coal assets to guarantee long-term fuel supply for the facility.

Industry analysts said the development could position Enugu as a major regional energy hub, particularly as Nigeria grapples with chronic power shortages, weak grid infrastructure and rising demand for reliable electricity from industries and households.

The project is also expected to stimulate investment inflows, create jobs and support manufacturing activities across the South-East region.

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest businessman, says Dangote Group is planning to invest in power generation with a target of up to 20,000 megawatts.

Dangote spoke in an interview with Makhtar Diop, managing director at International Finance Corporation (IFC), on Wednesday.

“We are now going into power — 20,000 megawatts,” he said.

Nigeria currently generates about 4,000–4,500MW of electricity, far below its installed capacity of over 13,000MW.

Dangote further listed the planned investment alongside other ongoing projects, including fertiliser production, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and port development.

He also spoke on the evolution of his refinery project, noting that it faced scepticism at inception.

“At the time when I started this refinery… I have never ever seen crude oil in my life,” he said.

“People openly said this refinery will never happen.”

The Dangote refinery, valued at about $20 billion, is now producing fuel, with capacity estimated at 650,000 barrels per day.

Dangote also said the experience has reinforced his approach to investing in large-scale projects across the continent.

“How do we open up Africa? We will open Africa by demonstrating that we believe in Africa, by investing our money in Africa,” he said.

“Because if I don’t invest my own money, I can never go to any conference and convince people that Africa is a good place to come and invest. But right now, I have a voice, I have demonstrated that these things are possible.”

He added that his group is expanding fertiliser production capacity to about 12 million tonnes annually, alongside investments in mining, agriculture, LNG, and a deep-sea port.

“And the needs of Africa are petroleum products, fertilisers,” Dangote said.

“Today, in about two and a half years, we will be the largest fertiliser company in the world. We are putting up 12 million tons of urea. We are opening up mines of potash and phosphate in Congo and Brazil. We are building the biggest deep-sea port with an 18-meter draft. We are doing LNG.”

He added that the expansion is being driven by stronger cash flows and increased financial flexibility.

“We are now actually free of assets, and we can actually raise more money. Our cash flow now is very, very strong,” Dangote said.

He added that the projects are aimed at addressing critical infrastructure and industrial gaps across Africa.

Dangote, however, said investments will make sense if Africa addresses its structural trade barriers.
