Politics / If A Fulani Is Not Safe In Sokoto, I Don't Know Where He Will Be Safe - Dr. Umar by Gjrich(m): 2:10pm
If A Fulani Is Not Safe In Sokoto State, I Don't Know Where He Will Be Safe In This Country- Umar.

Dr. Salim Musa Umar, the President-General of the Fulbe Global Development and Rights Initiative (FGDRI), emphasized the urgent need for action to address the ongoing conflict between Fulani and Hausa communities.

He called for the establishment of a committee tasked with engaging the Sultan to prioritize leadership and resolution of the feud.

Dr. Umar highlighted the existential threat faced by the Fulani people, stressing that if they are not safe in Sokoto State, it raises concerns about their safety nationwide.

According to what Dr. Umar said in the report by Vanguard, "It’s high time we set up a committee that will take us to the Sultan to take leadership seriously and settle the Fulani and Hausa feud.

As a race, we are facing an existential threat. If a Fulani is not safe in Sokoto State, I don’t know where he will be safe in this country.

The criminals among us are not representing us; they are not our ambassadors; we didn’t ask them to go and do banditry or kidnapping on our behalf; they are criminals and must be identified as such."

Politics / Somebody With ₦80 Billion Can Spend ₦1 Million A Day For 80,000 Days- Seun Kuti by Gjrich(m): 5:43pm On Apr 30
Seun Kuti, the son of the renowned Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has raised concerns about Nigerian politician Yahaya Bello's alleged financial mismanagement.

Kuti pointed out the gravity of the issue by explaining the reported embezzlement of ₦80 billion. He clarified that this sum is massive, equivalent to 80,000 million.

To put it in perspective, Kuti illustrated that someone with ₦80 billion could spend ₦1 million daily for an astounding 80,000 days, which amounts to a staggering 219 years.

Kuti highlighted the excessive wealth accumulation and questioned the necessity of amassing such immense amounts. He emphasized that these funds could have a far greater impact if utilized to aid others instead of solely benefiting a select few individuals.

In a video Seun Kuti shared via his YouTube Channel, He said, “They said Yahaya Bello has stolen ₦80 billion. Let’s go into the mathematics of what ₦80 billion is. ₦8 billion is 8, 000 millions. ₦80 billion is 80, 000 millions. Meaning somebody with ₦80 billion can spend ₦1 million a day for 80,000 days. I want to know who needs this kind of money? Is it that you need it?

So now, ₦1 million a day for 80,000 days. 80,000 days is 261 years (219 years actually). 80,000 days is 219 years of spending ₦1 million everyday. Are you telling me that this person needs this money or this person just want to make sure that that money is not used for the betterment of your life.”

Politics / Adebayo Adelabu: Accept Electricity Tariff Hike Or Face Total Blackout by Gjrich(m): 7:50am On Apr 30
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu on Monday warned that there would be total blackout in the country in the next three months if the proposed electricity tariff hike is not implemented.

The minister disclosed this yesterday in Abuja when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Power at an investigative hearing over the recent electricity tariff hike by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

This followed the rejection of the new tariff regime by the Senate committee, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.

Adelabu said, “The entire sector will be grounded if we don’t increase the tariff. With what we have now in the next three months, the entire country will be in darkness if we don’t increase tariffs.

“The increment will catapult us to the next level. We are also Nigerians, we are also feeling the impact.”

He said the sum of $10 billion is needed yearly for the next ten years to revive the nation’s power sector and nip in the bud the challenges bedeviling it.

“For this sector to be revived, the government needs to spend nothing less than 10 billion dollars annually in the next 10 years.

“This is because of the infrastructure requirement for the stability of the sector. But the government cannot afford that. And so we must make this sector attractive to investors and to lenders.

“So, for us to attract investors and investment, we must make the sector attractive, and the only way it can be made attractive is that there must be commercial pricing.

“If the value is still at N66 and the government is not paying subsidy, the investors will not come. But now that we have increased the tariff for A Band, there are interests being shown by investors,” he said.

Adelabu said the inability of the government to pay outstanding N2.9 trillion subsidy was due to limited resources, hence the need to evolve measures to sustain the sector.

He appealed to the lawmakers to support the process of paying the debt owed operators across the value chain of generation, transmission and distribution.

But the Senate Committee on Power, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, expressed concerns over the suffering of Nigerians, and asked the minister and other key players in the sector to explore other options.

Senators Simon Lalong (Plateau South) and Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), said consultations were not made before the tariff increase, stressing palliative would have been provided in the process.

Abaribe, who is Chairman of the Committee said, “What Nigerians wanted was a solution to the issues and ways to ensure liquidity in the sector.”

He also decried the nonappearance of a company “ZIGLAKS” over the failed agreement to provide prepaid meters for Nigerians, alleging that the company had received N32 billion in 20 years to meter Nigerian electricity consumers.

Other stakeholders who made presentations at the investigative hearing were the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (NAN), Association of Power Generation (Gencos), Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) among others.

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the appointment of Finidi George as new Super Eagles head coach.

The former international beat Emmanuel Amuneke to the job.
George, who spent 20 months as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro before the Portuguese voluntarily left the post following the accomplishment of Africa Cup of Nations runner-up position at Cote d’Ivoire 2023, took charge of the squad in an interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan, respectively, in a little over five weeks.

The matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles lagging behind in third place in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.

Obaseki Goes Tougher On Shaibu, Demands 15 Govt Cars In His Custody

It is no longer news that Comrade Phillip Shaibu has been impeached as Edo State deputy governor and replaced with Engr. Marvellous Godwins Omobayo, also from Edo North Senatorial district, but the lingering succession struggle between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his embattled former deputy has continued unabated.

Shortly after Shaibu was impeached by Hon.Blessing Agbebaku led House of Assembly, government agents, obviously not done with the disgraced former deputy governor, demolished his security outpost in front of his private residence in Benin, claiming he is no longer in government to enjoy such privileges.

Word leaked out that the governor had ordered his Chief Security Officer (CSO) to seize government cars and hold them in his custody since he (Shaibu) was no longer in office, just as the deputy governor's allies were considering their options.

Shaibu's close friend begged to remain anonymous, saying only God knew when the illegalities against his principal would end. He said, "It is a part of the lawlessness and impunity against my principal (Shaibu).

Even though the impeachment case is still pending in court, they dismissed this person, who had only five months remaining in his second term after serving for four years as deputy governor in his first.

Hon. Chris Nehikhare, Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, responded by refuting the idea that Obaseki ordered his CSO to seize 15 official vehicles from the impeached deputy governor.

Following the impeachment of the former Deputy Governor, the Permanent Secretary overseeing Government Assets sent him a letter requesting that he return the official cars affixed to his office, as is customary practice worldwide.

You are undoubtedly aware that commissioners will also get their official automobiles back when their terms are up. Thus, it is standard procedure.

Politics / No Short Cut To Naira Appreciation, Says Ned Nwoko. by Gjrich(m): 8:47am On Apr 28
No Short Cut To Naira Appreciation, Says Ned Nwoko.

Nwoko, who represents Delta North, advised in a statement he signed and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja on Saturday.

He advised them to concentrate on tackling the main issues responsible for the Naira depreciation, saying there was no short-cut to success.

He said the quest for economic freedom and the strength of the nation’s currency was an ongoing journey.

Nwoko also said the continuous revisit to previously implemented policies and considerations of new ones were imperative.
He also said the value of a sovereign nation’s currency was the cornerstone of respect and collaboration among nations, while reiterating that Nigeria must stimulate Naira demand.

According to him, as a nation that exports crude oil and other commodities globally, it is imperative that all transaction on these items be conducted exclusively in Naira.

“This will incentivise buyers to seek out Naira, thereby driving its appreciation due to increased demand and scarcity.
“Moreover, the foreign reserve policy warrants reassessment. The practice of maintaining reserves in foreign jurisdictions, termed “foreign reserves,” is not only objectionable but also counterproductive to Nigeria’s economic sovereignty.
“Unlike other nations like the United States, Britain, France, and Japan, which hold their reserves domestically, Nigeria’s adherence to this practice raises questions about its colonial legacy.

“If our early indigenous leaders acquiesced to this approach due to colonial influence, why should we perpetuate it? The primary rationale often cited to justify foreign reserves is trade balance maintenance“, Nwoko said.

According to him, this argument lacks merit when considering the limited number of traders involved in importing goods into Nigeria, which constitutes a negligible fraction of the nation’s population.

“Therefore, the notion that foreign reserves are indispensable for trade balance equilibrium falls short upon scrutiny”, he said.

The lawmaker who is a Solicitor, Supreme Court of England and Wales, there was the need to acknowledge that the recent appreciation of the Naira was not solely attributable to the CBN’s new measures.

“Rather, it can be attributed to the decline in refined oil imports following the production and distribution of refined petroleum from the local refinery – the Dangote refinery.

“Now envisage if other heavily consumed products were locally produced instead of imported. The success would be monumental and conspicuous,” he added.

In January, in a statement, he had preferred crucial measures to be adopted by the federal government CBN to combat dollarisation and stabilise the Naira.

Nwoko said that since the dissemination of that statement, various measures have been implemented to bolster the value of the Naira.

“However, the efficacy of these measures is yet to manifest fully, as the root cause of Naira devaluation remains unaddressed.

“Until we confront the underlying issues head-on, our efforts against dollarisation will be in vain,” he said.

Politics / FG Grants Air Peace Approval To Start Abuja-London Flight After Lagos-London by Gjrich(m): 9:20pm On Apr 27
The federal government has announced its approval for Air Peace to initiate flights from Abuja to London.

This follows the airline's recent introduction of direct flights from Lagos to London's Gatwick Airport on March 30, 2024.

The Minister of Aviation emphasized that Gatwick Airport serves as a starting point for the airline, with Heathrow Airport being the ultimate target.

In a statement, Minister Keyamo revealed that he granted authorization for Air Peace to extend its London route to include Abuja on April 24.

He emphasized the significance of this decision by noting that British Airways also operates flights to Abuja, and allowing Air Peace to compete benefits Nigerian travelers.

Addressing concerns about Heathrow Airport, Minister Keyamo explained that while the British government has been hesitant to permit operations there, the federal government has agreed to commence operations at Gatwick Airport.

However, he stressed that Heathrow Airport should be the preferred destination for Air Peace and other Nigerian airlines.

Minister Keyamo underscored that Gatwick Airport is viewed as a starting point and a relatively accessible opportunity.

He mentioned that his decisions regarding airport choices would be guided by a review of the bilateral air service agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

It's worth noting that Air Peace initiated its direct flights from Lagos to London's Gatwick Airport on March 30, 2024.

The airline offers economy class tickets for the London route at N1.2 million and business class tickets at N4 million.

Stanley Olisa, the airline's spokesperson, confirmed the ticket prices and availability for London services, which commenced on March 30, 2024.

Politics / FG Tell Abuja-Lokoja-Benin Road Contractors: Sign Contract In 2 Days Or Lose Job by Gjrich(m): 6:57pm On Apr 26
FG To Abuja-Lokoja-Benin Road Contractors: Sign Contract In Two Days Or Forfeit Job.

The federal government has set a deadline of Thursday 25 and Friday 26 April 2024 for the construction companies working on the Abuja-Lokoja-Benin highway to sign a N870b contract, saying that failure to meet the deadline will result in their removal from the project.

The minister of works, David Umahi, said that the previous 480km-long project contract, which was under the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPCL) Tax Credit Scheme, has expired, necessitating the new contract.

He however gave conditions to the signing of the contract that the contractor must work the basic rate, adhere to the timetable, deploy men and equipment on three sections of their stretch

Umahi handed down the warning on Thursday in Abuja during his meeting with the contractors handling the Abuja-Lokoja-Benin highway where expressed the government’s dissatisfaction with the contractors’ repeated delays and non-compliance with the contractual timetable, stating that Nigerian road users have suffered enough.

The contractors present at the meeting were Mothercat Nigeria Ltd, CGC Nigeria Ltd, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), and Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company Nigeria Ltd.

The contractors in attendance at the meeting are Mothercat Nigeria Ltd, CGC Nigeria Ltd, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) and Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company Nigeria Ltd.

The decision to issue a new contract was due to the behaviour of foreign contractors, according to Umahi, who revealed that the recently reviewed contract underwent due diligence, and the augmentation was approved.

According to him, the contractors accepted the review without objections, leading to the issuance of contract award letters, however, weeks after accepting the offer, most contractors have yet to respond, except for RCC, which raised certain concerns.

The Minister said upon assuming office, he discovered that the total contract sum for the 284km Lokoja-Benin road was initially N121b, but it was later reviewed by the last administration to over N870b, which he believed was excessive.

This led to his refusal to present the Certificate of No Objections to the Federal Executive Council (FEC), he said adding that after conducting an inspection tour of the road, he found that some sections could not support asphalt overlay.

As a result, the project was re-scoped after several months of meetings with the contractors and it was decided that concrete overlay would be used on the new lanes, while asphalt would be used on the other sections.

This led to the retention of the old cost of over N870b which the contractors signed after assuring that they could do the job, he added, saying, “the arrogance of contractors in the country is annoying, a country where contractors are dictating what happens is insulting.

“In the Ministry of Works, we have contractors with 17 contracts who have no personnel or equipment to do the job, they are just playing politics, staying on a job for 17 years that is what is playing out.

“The position of the government is that if you are not signing the contract between today (Thursday) and tomorrow, you will forgo the jobs, you can go to court. We will not enter into any conditions for negotiations.

“This contract is over N2b per kilometre, what else do you want ?

“If you are signing the contract, you sign it along the basic rates, and timetable and deploy in three sections or I will terminate the job. Enough of this insult, enough of this politics, enough of playing with the psyche of the people”.

The Minister reiterated the directive for the Ministry to profile all ongoing road projects across the country within seven days to assess the qualifications and number of contractors’ personnel and equipment on site.

He said it has become necessary to evaluate the capacity of contractors handling Federal Government road projects to ensure the successful completion of the projects.

Despite some contractors requesting additional time to review the new contract, the Minister remained firm, saying, “Sign the contract or leave the job; you don’t need to do the job”

Foreign Affairs / Saudi Arabia Breaks 70-year Alcohol Ban, Opening Shop For Diplomats by Gjrich(m): 5:36pm On Apr 26
Saudi Arabia Breaks 70-Year Alcohol Ban, Opening Shop for Diplomats.

Saudi Arabia has announced the opening of an alcohol shop in Riyadh, breaking a 70-year-long prohibition on the sale of alcoholic beverages in the kingdom.

This decision marks a significant shift in the conservative nation’s stance on alcohol consumption.

The alcohol shop, set to be located in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, will exclusively serve non-Muslim expatriates, particularly diplomatic staff.

This is the first time since 1952 that alcohol will be legally available for purchase in the kingdom.

The initiative aims to provide a legal avenue for diplomats who have previously relied on importing alcohol in sealed diplomatic pouches.

The decision comes as part of the Saudi government’s efforts to address the issue of illicit alcohol trade within the country.

By offering a legal means to access alcohol, authorities hope to mitigate the risks associated with underground alcohol markets.

However, the shop’s operations will be subject to strict regulations. Only diplomatic staff with prior registration and government clearance will be allowed to purchase alcohol.

Also, patrons must be over 21 years old and adhere to a prescribed code of conduct while inside the shop.

The introduction of the alcohol shop is a part of broader societal reforms under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative, aimed at modernizing and diversifying the kingdom’s economy.

While the move represents a significant departure from traditional norms, it aligns with the government’s broader agenda of liberalizing certain aspects of Saudi society.

While the alcohol shop signifies a progressive step forward, it’s important to note that the sale and consumption of alcohol remain strictly prohibited for Saudi citizens under Islamic law.

Violators of these laws are subject to severe penalties, including fines, and imprisonment.

Overall, the opening of the alcohol shop marks a historic moment in Saudi Arabia’s social and economic landscape, signaling a willingness to adapt to changing global norms while navigating the complexities of religious and cultural traditions.

Foreign Affairs / Hamas Officials Say Group Willing To Disarm If Palestinian State Is Established by Gjrich(m): 1:11am On Apr 26
Hamas Officials Say Group Willing To Disarm If Palestinian State Is Established

Some Hamas officials are signaling that the militant group could give up armed struggle against Israel if the Palestinians get an independent state in territories captured by Israel in the 1967 war.

The messaging suggests a softening of Hamas’ position as its fate hangs in the balance with Israel’s pummeling of the Gaza Strip, which Hamas ruled before the war.
The Palestinian militant group has long called for the Jewish state to be destroyed.

Basem Naim, an Istanbul-based member of Hamas’ political bureau, told CNN on Thursday that the group would agree to disarm if an independent Palestinian state was established.

“If an independent state with its capital in Jerusalem, while preserving the right of return for refugees, (is created) Al Qassam could be integrated into (a future) national army,” he said, referring to the group’s armed wing.

Hamas has traditionally rejected a two-state solution that would see a Palestinian state established alongside Israel and has instead advocated the creation of a Palestinian state in all of historic Palestine that today encompasses Israel, the occupied West Bank, occupied East Jerusalem and Gaza.

Mustafa Barghouti, President of the Palestinian National Initiative, said he wasn’t aware of Hamas offering to lay down its arms before, but said it would be a significant move if true.

“It’s significant in the sense that Palestinians are resisting occupation because there is an occupation,” he told CNN. “If the occupation is not there, they don’t need to resist it,” he said, referring to Israel’s military control of territories captured in 1967, where millions of Palestinians live.

Offer criticized as PR stunt
Efraim Inbar, president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, said the demand for Palestinian refugees’ return to their ancestral homes in what is today Israel would be a non-starter as it would amount to “the destruction of the state of Israel” where Jews form a majority.

He characterized Hamas’ offer as a public relations stunt aimed at Western nations.

“They see that there’s a lot of support in the Western world (for the Palestinians)… and they try to show that they’re the good guys, and Israel are the bad guys, and Israel will say no,” he said.

The United States and European states may use this to ask Israel “to give them a chance,” he said, but Israel is likely to take the gesture “with a grain of salt.”

Palestinian factions seek unity at Moscow meeting as Russia vies for greater role in Gaza war
The Netanyahu government has vowed to eliminate Hamas after it led an attack on Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping another 250.

On Wednesday, senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya told The Associated Press in Istanbul that the group would accept “a fully sovereign Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and the return of Palestinian refugees in accordance with the international resolutions.”

Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza in the 1967 war. Those territories are considered under international law and by most of the international community as occupied, and they are where the Palestinians want to establish a future state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long opposed such a prospect, arguing that it would endanger his country’s security.

Hayyah also told AP that Hamas would join the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to form a unified government for Gaza and the West Bank. Hamas refrained from joining the PLO, an umbrella grouping of Palestinian factions that signed peace agreements with it in the 1990s.

Barghouti said Hamas indicated as far back as 2007, when it led a Palestinian national unity government, that it is willing to accept a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders. Hamas, he added, has also been in favor of joining the PLO, but such a move wouldn’t automatically amount to recognition of Israel or the Oslo Accords that the PLO signed with it in the 1990s.

Hamas has not issued an official statement outlining the concessions its officials have touted and it is unclear if statements made by its officials abroad reflect the thinking of its military wing on the ground in Gaza.

A man looks at the destruction in a ravaged neighbourhood in the Gaza Strip Jabalia refugee camp on October 11, 2023, following overnight Israeli airstrikes amid continuing battles between Israel and the Hamas movement.

Six months into the war in Gaza, Israel has no exit strategy and no real plan for the future
Asked if Hayyah’s statement to AP amounts to a shift in Hamas’ position, Naim told CNN his remarks are reflective of the group’s messaging since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

Israel has so far failed to achieve its stated goal of eliminating Hamas from the Gaza Strip, with no top leaders from the group captured or killed, but it has significantly diminished its military capabilities and its ability to rule there as its bombing campaign leaves the enclave in ruin.

Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said at a news conference in the Qatari capital Doha that Hamas is willing to function solely as a political party once a Palestinian state is created, citing meetings between the group and Turkish officials.

He called on Hamas “to express their stances clearly.”

Inbar, from the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, said that after October 7, Israelis treat Hamas as a hostile entity and want to see it defeated. “We understand that they will try to rebuild the military infrastructure” after Israel destroys it, he said, adding that Israel will continue to “mow the grass,” a reference to occasional military operations to diminish Hamas’ military capability.

Foreign Affairs / Breaking News: Israeli Missile Hits Iran, U.S. Officials Confirm. by Gjrich(m): 8:01am On Apr 19
Israeli Missile Hits Iran, U.S. Officials Confirm.

Two U.S. officials confirm to CBS News that an Israeli missile has hit Iran. The strike follows last weekend's retaliatory drone and missile attack against Israel, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed to respond to.

Officials were tightlipped about the location or extent of the Israeli strike. When reached by CBS News, the Israel Defense Forces had no comment on the attack.

A senior Israeli official told The Washington Post the attack "was intended to signal to Iran that Israel can attack its territory."

The Iranian state-run IRNA news agency said air defense batteries fired across several provinces. It didn't elaborate on why the batteries fired, though people across the area reported hearing the sounds.

In particular, IRNA said air defenses fired at a major air base in Isfahan, which long has been home to Iran's fleet of American-made F-14 Tomcats — purchased before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The semiofficial Fars and Tasnim news agencies also reported the sound of blasts, without giving a cause. State television acknowledged "loud noise" in the area.

Isfahan is also home to sites associated with Iran's nuclear program, including its underground Natanz enrichment site, which has been repeatedly targeted by suspected Israeli attacks.

However, state television denied any attack on nuclear facilities, describing all sites in the area as "fully safe," and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it "can confirm that there is no damage to Iran's nuclear sites."

State television said three very small drones were shot down in an area east of Isfahan and was running what it said were live pictures showing a calm and normal Isfahan.

Three Iranian officials told The New York Times the attack on the airbase included small drones that may have been launched from inside Iran, saying radar systems didn't detect unidentified aircraft that entered Iran's airspace.

There has been no urgent meeting of the Iran's High National Council, state television added.

It appeared Iran was trying to downplay the impact of any Israeli attack.

Dubai-based carriers Emirates and FlyDubai began diverting around western Iran about 4:30 a.m. local time. They offered no explanation, though local warnings to aviators suggested the airspace may have been closed.

Iran then announced it had grounded commercial flights in Tehran and across areas of its western and central regions, but Iranian state television later said flights were operating normally again.

Regional tension continues to escalate
Iran last weekend launched an unprecedented retaliatory strike against Israel in response to a deadly attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria that killed seven officers, including two generals, from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iran's attack on Israel included 170 drones, over 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles, according to the IDF and U.S. officials. None of the drones crossed into Israeli territory before they were shot down by Israel and its allies, including the U.S., the IDF said.

Five of the ballistic missiles struck Israel, with four of them hitting Israel's Nevatim Air Base, where Israeli F-35s are based, U.S. officials told CBS News. The officials believe the base was likely Iran's primary target, as the strike against the consulate in Syria is believed to have been carried out by an F-35.

The U.S. and other Israeli allies have urged Netanyahu to exercise restraint in any possible response to Iran. U.S. officials have said the U.S. would not participate in any Israeli retaliatory strike.

In the aftermath of Iran's attack, which the IDF said caused "very little damage," President Biden pressed the Israeli prime minister,"to think about what that success says all by itself to the rest of the region," according to National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby.

United Nations, ECOWAS recognise Yoruba Nation – Arrested agitator.

Abiola-Onitiri
One of Yoruba Nation agitators arrested when they invaded the Oyo State Government Secretariat Ibadan, on Saturday remained adamant on Monday when the police paraded them.

He said he had no regret for his action and that the action was not treasonable.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the suspect, whose name was not given, argued that the action of the agitators was legal and that their sponsors had documents stating that the UN and ECOWAS had given recognition to Yoruba nation’s existence.

Another suspect said the agitators were promised jobs and good conditions of living if Yoruba nation became a reality.

A statement by the Yoruba Nation group, Emeritus Prof. Adebanji Akintoye, had, however, said that the Democratic Republic of the Yoruba, a group under Mrs. Dupe Onitiri-Abiola, which claimed responsibility for the attack, had no connection with the Yoruba Nation organisation in any way.

But the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr Adebola Hamzat, paraded 21 of the agitators arrested before newsmen in Ibadan on Monday.

The Oyo State Police Command Police in Oyo State are on the trail of sponsors of Yoruba nation agitators who invaded government secretariat in Ibadan on Saturday.

The agitators invaded the Oyo State House of Assembly complex located inside the secretariat and hoisted their flag there in an attempt to take over the assembly

According to the police boss, some of those arrested had been listing the names of their sponsors and that police had visited some locations within Oyo State where some incriminating items were recovered.

Hamzat recalled that a member of Amotekun Corps (the security network of states in the Southwest) was injured during the invasion just as one of the agitators who resisted arrest got injured in a gun duel with the police.

He stressed that police were not aware of any death during the incident.

“On Saturday, at about 8:55 a.m., information was received that some men, dressed in military-like camouflage and armed with pump action semi-automatic rifles were sighted on motorcycles around Olomi and moving into Ibadan.

“At about 9:15 a.m., the hoodlums, later known as Yoruba Nation Agitation Group, were trailed to the State Secretariat and to the premises of the governor’s office.

“They hoisted their flag at the House of Assembly, proclaiming the creation of a `Democratic Republic of the Yoruba.

“With police reinforcement, the miscreants were warned to disperse. The agitators turned violent and opened fire on the police and a detachment of Amotekun Corps present,’’ Hamzat said.

He said the police responded and were joined by operatives of other security agencies who suppressed the treason.

The police commissioner also told newsmen that five pump action semi-automatic rifles and two wooden double barrel guns and other exhibits were recovered from the agitators.

Also recovered were two jackets, 30 pieces of torch lights, 49 bells, five horse whips, seven pieces of walkie-talkies and accessories, four generators, 72 pairs of camouflage uniforms and 405 live cartridges.

Hamzat described the action of the suspects as criminal, unpatriotic and a clear case of treasonable felony and terrorism to be meted with adequate sanctions through purposeful prosecutions.

He assured that the police would remain steadfast in the protection of lives and property.

“The continued existence of Nigeria as a sovereign indivisible entity is a task that must be accomplished.

“The labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain. Police in Oyo State will be unrelenting in ensuring the continued united corporate existence of Nigeria as a country,’’ Hamzat stressed.

Politics / Tinubu: We Will Transform Police By Fixing Institutional Mentality Of Officers by Gjrich(m): 9:32pm On Apr 16
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Monday night, said complete overhaul of institutional mentality and memory of police officers were fundamental in his administration’s ongoing bid to transform the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) into a modern, professional and accountable institution.

Tinubu explained that since coming on board last year, his government has initiated wide-ranging reforms to revitalise the nation’s police force. He declared every April 7 as ‘Police National Day’.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony in Abuja, the president stressed the need to engage men and women of the force in training and capacity-building to equip them with the requisite expertise to carry out the arduous task of modern policing.

Tinubu, who was represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, listed part of the comprehensive reforms of his administration to rejuvenate the police force to include investment in training and capacity-building.

He said this would ensure that police officers were equipped with the knowledge, skills, values, and expertise required to tackle the complex challenges of modern policing, assuring them that the government would upgrade equipment and technology to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency of the force.

“This includes acquiring fit-for-purpose equipment, weapons, ammunition, and armoured carriers to provide cover and protection for officers in combat situations.

“These endeavours will be supported by suitable measures to enhance the status of our officers and personnel both during their service and after retirement,” he further stated.

The president also explained why the federal government approved the first week of April as police week and the last day of the week as National Police Day.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in our tradition of honouring the Police Force in the life of this great nation, we have approved the adoption of the first week of April as Police Week. Furthermore, the last day of the week, the 7th of April, is hereby declared National Police Day in Nigeria.

“Tonight, I must remind you that we don’t see you as just the shields of the nation. We don’t see you as robots. This is why we are here. We are here to humanise you,” he declared.

Delivering the president’s speech titled: “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” the vice-president said at a time in Nigeria’s history when the nation’s security architecture was being stretched beyond elastic limits, the citizens had been able to endure in the face of security threats as well as attacks on their lives and livelihoods due to the commitment of the police.

“Your exemplary valour doesn’t only represent the pinnacle of patriotism that binds us but also instils confidence that brighter days lie just beyond the horizon,” President Tinubu added.

According to him, this administration had been unequivocal about its resolve to transform the Nigeria Police Force into “a modern, professional, and accountable institution that mirrors the aspirations and values” of the nation.

He said, “Our idea of a modern police force goes beyond superficial changes like repainting office buildings and residences or simply procuring firearms.

“True reform of our security doctrine and its architecture necessitates recognising the importance of administering justice and adhering to our ethical values to foster stability and order in the nation.

“The transformation we seek must transcend mere policy and infrastructure; it requires a fundamental overhaul of our institutional mentality and memory.”

In his goodwill message, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for recognising the hard work, resilience and patriotism of the officers and men of the police force.

Expressing his delight and that of the National Assembly for celebrating the well-deserved officers of the force, the Senate President said the decision to celebrate the nation’s unsung heroes would pave the way for a new police force in the country.

His words: “The leadership of the police understands the role of police force in a democratic dispensation. I commend the Inspector General of Police and I commend the police officers for the work of sacrifice and for maintaining peace and order in our communities.

“As we commend the good officers, let us weed out the bad ones among the police force,” Akpabio stated, adding that, ‘to whom much is given, much is expected’.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Egbetokun applauded Tinubu for his support to the force, as well as his administration’s efforts in ensuring the nation’s security forces were up to their game.

To the recipients of the awards and commendations, the police IG assured them that their “dedication, courage and selflessness are truly inspiring,” adding that, their contributions to the force would be remembered for many years to come.

Speaking, also, Chairman of the Police Service Commission and former IG, MrSolomon Arase, advocated improved welfare package for men and women of the Nigeria Police Force, noting that enhanced wellbeing of the personnel would improve their overall performance in securing lives and property.

He commended the Tinubu administration for the support so far given to the police force, even as he pledged the cooperation of the Police Service Commission for the transformation of the force.

Those who also delivered goodwill messages included the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; Chief of DefenceStaff, General Christopher Musa; and former IGP, Chief Sunday Ehindero.

BREAKING: Obaseki Appoints 38-Year-Old Omobayo As Deputy Gov After Shaibu’s Sack.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State appointed Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as his new deputy, following the impeachment of the former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, by the Edo State House of Assembly.

Omobayo Marvellous Godwins is currently 38 years old and hails from Akoko-Edo, Edo North Senatorial District.

Shaibu’s impeachment came after the State Assembly adopted the report of a seven-man panel that investigated allegations of misconduct against him.

The panel, led by retired Justice S. A. Omonuwa, held its inaugural sitting last Wednesday in Benin, concluding on Friday after Shaibu or his counsel failed to appear to defend the allegations.

Despite being given multiple opportunities to respond to the accusations, Shaibu did not attend the hearings, prompting the House of Assembly to proceed with the case.

Shaibu’s counsel, Oladoyin Awoyale, initially attended the inaugural sitting but later withdrew from the proceedings after the panel declined his request to suspend the hearings pending the outcome of a suit filed in Abuja challenging Shaibu’s impeachment.

Politics / Aba Geometric Power Plant And Yoruba Omoluabi - Dr. Adeniran by Gjrich(m): 6:54pm On Mar 27
Aba Geometric Power And Yoruba Omoluabi - Dr. Adeniran

The whole nation has been over the moon since Vice President Kashim Ibrahim commissioned the Geometric Power Group on Monday, February 24, 2024, designed to generate 188 megawatts and supply power to the Aba industrial city and the environs in Abia State as a ring-fenced area. The nation has been agog for three principal reasons, namely, the first time a part of Nigeria will have constant and quality electricity; Aba will serve as a model to be used in other parts of Nigeria, as Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu stated during the commissioning; and the Geometric Power takeoff shows the tenacity of its chief promoter, Professor Bart Nnaji, who has battled all manner of people in government and their minions for a whole 20 years to get to the Aba Independent Power project to this level.
I join millions of Nigeria in congratulating Professor Nnaji, whose one-year tenure as the Minister of Power from 2011 to 2012 achieved unprecedented heights in power development in Nigeria.

After reading Nnaji’s speech, I came out with a strong conviction that the Yoruba omoluabi has always been at play from the inception of Geometric Power.
The omoluabi principle made the Aba IPP possible. Omoluabi is a philosophical concept among the Yoruba that makes working for the common good a supreme good.
Omoluabi is the direct opposite of parochialism or self-centredness.
Therefore, the new attempts by some politicians to sow seeds of enmity between the Igbo and the Yoruba since the 2023 general elections do not reflect who the Yoruba people are.

In the nationally well-received speech, Professor Nnaji noted that though the seed to build the thermal power plant was sown by the late World Bank President, James Wolfensohn, and Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, when they visited Aba on March 17, 2004, to see firsthand the potential of Aba as an industrial city, it was the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo which made the seed planting possible.

Until 2005 when the Power Sector Reform Act was enacted, the Federal Government, through the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), had the monopoly of power generation, transmission, and distribution.
Still, President Obasanjo carved out Aba as a kind of island for the Geometric Power team to generate its own electricity and distribute it.
The whole idea was to accelerate Abia’s rapid development as Nigeria’s foremost indigenous manufacturing place. In taking this far-reaching and unprecedented measure, Obasanjo, a Yoruba, did not care about the part of the country from where Professor Nnaji hails.

As Nnaji revealed in his speech at the commissioning, ex-President Obasanjo has continued to support the Aba IPP with infectious enthusiasm even out of office.
In recognition of his preeminent role in the emergence of the project, the IPP promoters insisted that the statesman commission the imposing building of the Aba Power Electric Company, their electricity distribution subsidiary.
Even when Obasanjo was not going to attend in person because he was in Namibia for the funeral of the country’s president, Hage Geinob, the Geometric Power team expressed satisfaction that Obasanjo could be represented by a member of his family.
Today, the Aba Power complex, which houses the corporate headquarters of the Geometric Power Group, proudly bears a plaque stating that it was commissioned by Obasanjo, who was represented at the commissioning ceremony by his son, Dr Seun Obasanjo.

It is regrettable that during the privatization of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) successor companies in 2013, certain powerful individuals in the government of the day bluntly refused to recognize the agreement signed between the Federal Government and Geometric Power in 2005 and, consequently, sold it as part of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to a consortium of core investors.
The sale was despite the fact that the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) stated clearly in all documents presented to the EEDC bidders that the Aba Ring-fenced Area was not part of the EEDC.
Analysts point out that the National Council of Privatisation (NCP) took this strange stance because of Nnaji’s opposition to secret moves by top government officials during the PHCN successor companies’ privatisation to corner the national assets when he was the Minister of Power.

The Yoruba omoluabi was demonstrated fully again during the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company’s privatization.
Bola Onagoruwa, the Director General of the BPE, one of the FG agencies that signed the 2005 agreement between the Federal Government and Geometric Power, put her foot down against perversion of justice, arguing that the NCP must respect the agreement over the Aba IPP. Ms Onagoruwa, a lawyer and niece of Nigeria’s former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Olu Onagoruwa, SAN, is imbued with conscience and a fighter for justice.
She was fired instantly for her insistence on justice and due process.
The senior Onagoruwa had earlier in 1995 been fired as the justice minister for opposing Sani Abacha’s dictatorship gravitation towards malevolent dictatorship.

The Yoruba omoluabi came to play again in the resolution of the nine-year-old legal battle between the Geometric Power Group and interstate Electrics over the ownership of the Aba Ring-fenced Area which comprises nine of the 17 local government areas in Abia State. In his speech at the commissioning ceremony of 26 February 2024, Prof Nnaji noted the resolution was done during the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, and quickly attributed the heavy lifting to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Power Minister Babatunde Fashola.
In other words, these two Yoruba persons ended, at least legally, the mess that became the EEDC privatization in 2013 which caused Geometric Power a decade of waste. Interestingly, the mess occurred during the presidency of the man some politically exposed Igbo persons used to call an Igbo when he was in office because of their private gains.

The story of the Yoruba omoluabi at Geometric Power continues.
Power Minister Adelabu disclosed at the commissioning that he had always intervened on the Geometric Power side on President Bola Tinubu’s instructions anytime agencies under his supervision didn’t quite agree with the private sector operator.
Tinubu understands Geometric Power’s critical role in Nigeria’s electricity history. On the same occasion, Chief Adelabu revealed that Prof Nnaji was the only ex-minister invited to address senior members of the Tinubu administration when the new government came into being last May because Tinubu appreciates Nnaji’s mastery of the electricity sector.
It may be noted that when Nnaji resigned as the Minister of Power in August 2012, Tinubu described Nnaji as “the only performing minister in this government”.

This article has only sought to establish that the Yoruba are a liberal people, and liberalism has always been a critical development driver everywhere in the world.
Our omoluabi philosophy has made them contribute significantly to the Geometric Power success, an important Nigerian story.

Politics / Alex Otti Ignites Excitement In Isuikwuato LGA As He Kickoff Road Construction by Gjrich(m): 4:13am On Mar 27
ABIA: Excitement In Isuikwuato LGA As Gov Otti Kicks Off Long-Awaited Road Construction.

There was excitement in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State on Tuesday as Governor Alex Otti flagged off the long-awaited construction of an 11.7-kilometer road in the LGA.

Hailing the road’s significance, Hon. Lucky Johnson, representing Isuikwuato State Constituency, called it “the heart of Isuikwuato” and a vital link connecting Enugu State to Port Harcourt and Umuahia.

When completed, the road is expected to reduce travel time and boost the sale of farmers’ agricultural products by enabling easier access to markets in Umuahia and Aba.

The project’s impact is anticipated to extend beyond transportation, with Hon. Johnson pointing to a new fuel station already under construction near the road as a sign of the potential development projects in the LGA.

“We are in governance, the election has come and gone. This is about good governance, not partisanship,” the lawmaker stated.

The project is being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Company Ltd (CCECC).
