NEW YORK (AP) — Time magazine selected
Pope Francis as its Person of the Year on
Wednesday, saying the Catholic Church's
new leader has changed the perception of
the 2,000-year-old institution in an
extraordinary way in a short time.
The pope beat out NSA leaker Edward
Snowden for the distinction, which the
newsmagazine has been giving each year
since 1927.
The former Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario
Bergoglio was elected in March as the first
pope from Latin America and the first Jesuit.
Since taking over at the Vatican, he has
urged the Catholic Church not to be
obsessed with "small-minded rules" and to
emphasize compassion over condemnation
in dealing with touchy topics like abortion,
gays and contraception.
He has denounced the world's "idolatry of
money" and the "global scandal" that nearly
1 billion people today go hungry, and has
charmed the masses with his simple style
and wry sense of humor. His appearances
draw tens of thousands of people and his @
Pontifex Twitter account recently topped 10
million followers.
"He really stood out to us as someone who
has changed the tone and the perception
and the focus of one of the world's largest
institutions in an extraordinary way," said
Nancy Gibbs, the magazine's managing
editor.
The Vatican said the honor wasn't
surprising given the resonance in the
general public that Francis has had, but it
nevertheless said the choice was a "positive"
recognition of spiritual values in the
international media.
"The Holy Father is not looking to become
famous or to receive honors," said the
Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico
Lombardi. "But if the choice of Person of
Year helps spread the message of the Gospel
— a message of God's love for everyone —
he will certainly be happy about that."
It was the third time a Catholic pope had
been Time's selection. John Paul II was
selected in 1994 and John XXIII was chosen
in 1962.
In Argentina on Wednesday, Padre Toto, one
of the many "slum priests" the pope
supported for years as archbishop of
Buenos Aires, praised Time magazine's
selection.
"I think the recognition of Time magazine is
good news, because Pope Francis embodies
one of the values of a church that's more
missionary, closer to the people, more
austere, more in keeping with the gospel,"
Toto said. "He had the genius of knowing
how to express this sense of the church and
hopefully his way of being will catch on with
other political leaders, business executives,
sports figures. His leadership is inspiring."
Besides Snowden, Time had narrowed its
finalists down to gay rights activist Edith
Windsor, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and
Syrian President Bashar Assad.
President Barack Obama was Time's
selection for 2012.
Time editors make the selection. The
magazine polled readers for their choice,
and the winner was Egyptian General Abdel-
Fattah el-Sissi, who didn't even make the top
10 of Time's final list.

Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday (today) in Rome, Italy, announced the appointment of Archbishop John Onaiyekan of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja as a Cardinal-elect.

Bishop Emmanuel Badejo, of the Oyo Diocese and Chairman, Social Communications Committee, Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, (CBCN) confirmed the appointment in an e-mail sent to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Badejo, who is currently attending a conference alongside other Bishops and lay faithful in Rome, said that the Pope would formally inaugurate the new Cardinals-elect on Nov. 24 in Rome.

He disclosed that five other Cardinals were appointed, including Archbishop James Michael Harvey, Prefect of the Pontifical Household; His Beatitude Bechara Boutros Rai, Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites (Lebanon).

Others are His Beatitude Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal, Major Archbishop of Trivandrum of the Syro-Malankars (India); Archbishop Ruben Salazar Gomez, Archbishop of Bogotá (Colombia); and Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle, Archbishop of Manila (Philippines).

NAN reports that Cardinals have the task of helping the Pope who is Apostle Peter's successor carry out his mission.

NAN also recalls that it is from the College of Cardinals that a new Pope is usually elected after the death of the incumbent.

Cardinals below the age of 80 are eligible to vote and be voted for during the election of a new Pope.

NAN reports that before now, the Catholic Church in Nigeria had produced three Cardinals including, the late Dominic Cardinal Ekandem, Francis Cardinal Arinse and Anthony Cardinal Okogie.

Both Arinse and Okogie had resigned after they had attained 75 years, the age set for Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops to retire from their pastoral care, as head of their dioceses.

It would also be recalled that the two Cardinals were appointed by late Pope John Paul II.

While Arinze was appointed in April, 1985, Okogie, on his part was appointed in Oct. 2003. (NAN)

You make an unwarranted assumption that I am a Christian or that I have pastor. Unlike you, I think for myself.
But something occurs to me, why has so much time and space been wasted on such a stupid question?
Surely, the poster such be able to read what the bible says about listening to secular music. Afterall, it is claimed, on a regular basis, that it has all the answers.
The fact that such a question has to asked, and the fact that there has been no definitive answers shows that Christians just make up the rules to suit them.

In determining whether to listen to any secular music, 3 factors are to be considered: the purpose of the music, the content of the music, and, the style of the music. If you're not convinced in this three areas about a particular music, just stay clear.

Here's what I read on a site concerning the content of a secular music: Philippians 4:8 is an excellent guide for musical lyrics:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

If we should be thinking about such things, surely those are the things we should invite into our minds through music and lyrics. Can the lyrics in a secular song be true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy? If so, then there is nothing wrong with a Christian listening to a secular song of that nature.

However, much of secular music does not meet the standard of Philippians 4:8. Secular music often promotes immorality and violence while belittling purity and integrity. If a song glorifies what opposes God, a Christian should not listen to it. However, there are many secular songs with no mention of God that still uphold godly values such as honesty, purity, and integrity. If a love song promotes the sanctity of marriage and/or the purity of true love—even if it does not mention God or the Bible—it can still be listened to and enjoyed.

Whatever a person allows to occupy his mind will sooner or later determine his speech and his actions. This is the premise behind Philippians 4:8 and Colossians 3:2, 5: establishing wholesome thought patterns. Second Corinthians 10:5 says we should “take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.” These Scriptures give a clear picture of the kind of music we should not listen to.

Trust me many Pastors groove to Sunny Ade & Oby's song. It shuld be more about the lyrical content- if its clean.

Zodiac61: In my experience, it is sinful for a christian to do anything not approved by his pastor.
Whilst the rest of us just get on with life and enjoy the little pleasures, the christian spends all his life wondering whether everything he does, or even thinks, is sinful.
Poster, get a life. If secular music bothers you, do not listen to it.

* Freeze - He always been my all time fav OAP, but he has started becoming boring. The management should also tell him to stop that ''who is Ur daddy?'' that he always says.

* N6 - I just love his swag. He knows what entertainment is all about. List to him weekends in the afternoon.

* Joyce - this chick just has a soft, calming & sex.y voice. Listen at night & forget about your sleep.

* Amaka - Just love her voice. Her shift is at night. She has a strong voice & always keeps it real.
