Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka says he prefers traditional Orisa worshipping to Christianity and Islam because it fascinated him more.

Soyinka said this in an interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, where he further explained that the depth of faith in Islam and Christianity doesn’t match that of Orisa worshipping for him.

According to him, Orisa worshipping eschews violence and is more creative.

“I was fortunate to be born in two worlds – the Christian world and traditional Orisa worshippers.

“My grandfather, until he – poor man – also got converted, was an Orisa person and a chief, and his (grandfather’s) side (of Orisa) fascinated me a lot more.

“For me, it (Orisa worshipping) was more artistic, creative, and also more mysterious. I don’t find much of the mysterious in Christianity and even less in Islam. And that is for a simple reason that I didn’t grow up in a Muslim environment.

“Orisa is open, and very ecumenical and that is why these foreign religions were able to penetrate it and even distort the truth. Because of the generosity of this spirit (Orisa), it is not violent. It is one of those African religions which eschew violence.

“I don’t believe in the Islamic or Christian God and, for the adherents of these religions, if that makes me an atheist, so I say, I am an atheist.

“I insisted that all human beings have a certain spiritual core in their being. I believe myself to be a more spirit-sensitive person,” Wole Soyinka said.

The number of Nigerian universities in the top 1,000 spots of the Times Higher Education (THE) world universities ranking has decreased for the third consecutive year.

In the 2024 rankings last year, two Nigerian universities –Covenant University, Ogun State and the University of Ibadan— made the top 1,000 spot. The year before in 2023, three universities –University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Covenant University – were in the top 1,000 spots.

In the latest ranking for 2025, however, only one Nigerian university, Covenant University, made the ranking. The private institution has consistently featured in the top 1,000 spots since 2019.

Top universities in Nigeria

Among Nigerian universities, Covenant is followed by Ahmadu Bello University, ranked between 1001–1200. Other Nigerian universities ranked between 1001-1200 are Landmark University, University of Ibadan, and University of Lagos.

Bayero University, Federal University of Technology Akure, Federal University of Technology, Minna, University of Benin and the University of Ilorin are ranked in 1201–1500.

Fishermen in Kebbi state, north west Nigeria have killed a hippopotamus, and shared its parts as meat to the people.

The animal was killed on the order of the Governor and enforced by the Emir of Yauri, Zayyanu Abdullahi, after it was said to have killed one of the emir’s staff

It was put down by the efforts of 40 fishermen using bows and arrows have after an extensive search

The animal was later ferried in a local dugout canoe to the Palace of District Head of Gungu, Kasimu Aliyu, where it was slaughtered and its parts shared as meat to people.

Kebbi state has a large body of water and is renowned for its large fishing community. It hosts the annual Argungu fishing festival

However citing of Hippopotamuses are rare in Kebbi. The animal can live on both land and water.

Today, I had the honour of inaugurating the newly elected 23 Local Government Chairmen, at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi.

The people of Benue have spoken loudly and clearly, choosing a new path for progress, unity, and development. Their overwhelming support at the polls reflects the deep trust and faith they have in our shared vision for the New Benue, which begins right from the grassroots!

To our newly elected chairmen, this is a call to service. You are entrusted with a mission of immense importance: to lead with integrity, transparency, and accountability.

I urge you all to focus on the needs of the people, foster collaboration, and build upon the foundations set before you to bring democratic dividends closer to every Benue son and daughter.

Remember, leadership is not about personal gain but about service and sacrifice. As we embrace local government autonomy, I encourage you to work closely with the state government so that together, we can rewrite the socioeconomic narrative of our dear state.

The time for politicking is over; it’s time to hit the ground running. Let us join hands with all stakeholders, including the opposing voices, to build a prosperous Benue for our people. You have my full support, and I believe in your ability to lead with purpose and distinction.

JERUSALEM

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is set to travel to the US on Wednesday for security consultations as part of preparations by Israel to launch an attack on Iran in response to its retaliatory missile strikes, Hebrew media reported Sunday.

Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth daily reported that Gallant will make a quick visit to Washington to discuss security developments in the Middle East.

The Israel Hayom daily said the visit will primarily focus on Iran and aims to coordinate security efforts with the US.

Gallant will meet with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin as part of the visit, the Pentagon announced.

Iran launched more than 180 rockets at Israel in early October in response to the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah as well as Israel's actions in Gaza and Lebanon, causing casualties and material damage to military bases.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah group and Israel have been engaged in cross-border warfare since the start of Israel's war on Gaza, which has killed nearly 41,900 people, most of them women and children, following an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas last October.

At least 2,036 people have since been killed, over 9,500 injured and 1.2 million others displaced, according to Lebanese authorities.

The international community has warned that Israeli attacks in Lebanon could escalate the Gaza conflict into a wider regional war.

The spokesman of the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) said that all flights in the country will be cancelled from 9:00 pm on Sunday until Monday 6:00 am.

Speaking in an interview with Mehr news agency, Jafar Yazarlou stated that all flights of the country's airports will be canceled from 21:00 tonight until 6:00 am tomorrow due to the operational restrictions.

All passengers are asked to get in touch with the flight information of airports and airlines in order to reschedule their flights, he added.

Yazarlou ensured air passengers not to worry about the cost of flight tickets and the airlines will act according to the instructions of the Civil Aviation Organization.

Flight changes and the way of refunding the air tickets will be announced subsequently, the spokesman added.
