Get a professional vet not road side guy that sells dogs food and accessories to do a proper diagnosis of the dog and don't rule out parvovirus. The earlier you start a proper treatment,the better for the dog.

How do you take care of your dog's tick problem. It's driving me nuts. My dog sleeps in my room, doesn't go out except for walks and waste removal.

I have used tick shampoo, tick powder and even a solution for local breeds but my dog nearly died that day so I stopped immediately.

I pick the ticks one by one with tweezers, I have tried apple cider vinegar, taken it to the vet, shaved the hair, fumigated my home, done everything. But it's like they just keep coming back.

We have enough qualified vet in the country. Last month when my puppy had parvo virus, I immediately called the usual vet guy to check up the puppy and urgently commence treatment.

I wasn't too comfortable with the treatment and I contacted my pharmacy brother who resides in another town. He told me point blank that he doesn't trust all those guys we refer to as vet and advised I observe the puppy condition for the first day of treatment and report back to him.

The following day the puppy health worsen and I was virtually chasing the so called vet guy with multiple calls and messages,only for him to show up at about 3pm for day two treatment.
I couldn't stand the nonchalant attitude and immediately place a call to my pharmacy brother who helped in consulting with his professional qualified vet friend. Surprisingly the qualified vet refuses to even prescribed any medication but gave two options 1. A pet ambulance service to pick up the puppy for immediate treatment which could cost about 50,000. 2. Referred a qualified vet within my environ for urgent treatment at the cost of 30,000 and initial deposit of 20,000 with survival chance of 50/50. I gladly accepted the second option. Long story short the puppy survived after 5days of intensive care by the referred vet.

Its so sad we dont do things right in this part of the world. a non qualified personnel shouldnt assume or claim to be a vet just because you own a shop selling dog accessories, foods and can administer injection. We encourage those guys by patronising them cos of the cheap price and expect a quality service which isnt possible.

Exactly bro, most of them are just selling dog food and accessories and probably dey learn how to inject dogs and they start calling themselves VET. Them full my area, in fact qualified vet in Nigeria no reach 100, So annoying.

It's very annoying the way and manners those guys conduct themselves. The Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), a body charged with the responsibility of coordinating and overseeing the practice of the Veterinary profession in Nigeria should wake up to it's responsibilities of monitoring Veterinary Practice in Nigeria.

Those guy are dog killers and not vet. A vet will always follow up with you no matter the schedule. It's high time we stop referring to them as a vet cos they truly aren't professionally certified. Settings up a business for dog accessories,feeds and medications doesn't qualify one has a vet.

Either ur vet lives in mango street inside banana island or ur dog na rare breed like husky weh ur vet know say no get choice.. my only parvo experience was in 2017, it was a friend that helped me cure it, d guy I bought d pup from, he wasn't responsible for d virus though as d dog was with me for about a month or 2, we went to d pet shop there in festac n all I spent there didn't amount to 7k, which included buying drugs for my rabbit as well, I left the dog with him n picked her up a week later, a bb.. u can get a low budget gsd puppy for as low as 25k, are u saying parvo treatment will buy 2pups?? I don't know the price of the treatment but I mentioned 15k because that was what a breeder said he was billed by his vet for the treatment this lockdown on a facebook or whatsapp dog group, cant remember d one

From my experience, the 50k wasnt the charge for treatment from the vet. My dog vet prescribed some drugs which I bought myself about 5k. He treated the dog for about 2 days and there wasnt a significant improvement. A family medical personnel suggested a new vet for treatment who charged 30k which I wasn't bothered cos all I was after was survival not minding the cost . The new vet did a great job and in few days the puppy health improved drastically. Mind you the former vet incurred some expenses for drips and other injections administered for the two days duration which I still have to offset.

No amount is too much to revive a dying dog but 15k charge isn't possible

Op.. most of these people saying u can't either spend excessively on their dogs, or they dont even own one.. a fully grown guard dog can live healthy on a 10k-15k budget a month, it's not until u waste money on over priced dog foods.. this is something I've learnt being a livestock producer, it's not about the brand of feed but it's composition, u can get mixed noodles at the rate of 300-350 per kilo 10kilos =3500, budget another 3500 for other foods bcoa you'll need to give him something z differen every now ans then, dats 7k weh go still enter d next month, budjet d remaining 8k for medications which u might not need.. most kennels have their recipes, most vets use crushed noodles, all des foreign foods are being used by pple that own dogs as pets or security, the pple they bought those dogs from make use of local recipie.. I know of a guy with a massive Caucasian, and a rot/gsd mix.. he got them as pup and na leftovers weh he dey feed dem everyday since puppy ooh, leftover from a booker in his street he pays 500naira a week and he gets more than enough food for 3 massive dogs on a daily bases.. ignore what thos pple saying u can't are talking about.. they didnt even ask what u have to budget for d dog dem just dey shout u cant, d major concern is parvovirus, juat save up like 15k for that just incase.. otherwise ur good

I agreed with your suggestion but budgeting 15k for parvo treatment is a big NO. I'm still treating my puppy who had parvo and I have spent over 50,000 now . No standard vet will collect 15k for parvovirus treatment.

The cost varies. First vet prescript some drugs which cost about 5,000. He administered drips and injections for two days which I was only charged and no significant improvement so I engaged another vet who charged 30,000. Sum total I have spent more than 50,000. But the virus can be preventable and unfortunately the preventive vaccines didn't work in my case.

You can maintain a dog depending on your budget. Same way some children attends private university and some government owned University and still do far better ... Ironically, i have a 4months old Boerboel puppy well feed with booster can food and booster puppy dry food. All vaccines regularly taken. And my landlord owns a mix breed of Boerboel and a local breed. Never vaccinated, feed on eba or garri mixed with milk once daily. The dog was very active and security alert. Recently my puppy manifest parvo signs and was immediately treated by two different vet which cost me a whole lot of money.

Hello nairalnaders I’m moving to my new apartment soon, a self con after my service year ends and I’ve always been a lover of dogs but never had the chance to own one yet, due to their cost of manintenace . So now I’m on a salary scale of 75K and really really plan to get a dog for my self preferably a germane Shepard to start with, I have no experience on how to maintain one So I really need you people help on this. Can I get one with my salary range. Like how much can I assume to budget for the dog monthly and what’s the best breed to start with? I basically knew nothing than I love dog pls help me

You can have a dog with such amount of income. People over hype the cost of maintaining a dog. Though it's sometime very expensive to maintain especially when you experience unforseen medical challenge which might necessity emergency spending. You can opt for home made food to feed your dog and occasional Cann food which are sold in units as well . . People even maintain a family with less of your income and heaven didn't fall.

Update on Kim
Another vet handled the treatment for days. Daily administring drips and injections for 5 days. On day 7 of treatment , she showed some signs of improvement. Getting better now but still trying to regain her appetite.

Tragically, my landlord lost his dog today due to neglects. The dog has minor bruises on her body and was sprayed with a mix of pest insecticide. Unfortunately the dog died few mins into treatment.

Having a mixed feelings ... On one hand I'm happy my dog is getting better and on the other, felt so bad we lost a very healthy and active dog.

Yeah, I gave her pap using the syringe. Mainwhile the vet visited today to administer a drip and also gave some injections. Im also giving her glucose with water.

The vet gave her (kim) two injections and one drip this morning. He also administered antibiotics and others drugs . He instructed I watch the dog closely and give the drugs later in the evening while he check up tomorrow again to examine. The vomiting and stooling has stopped for now but the dog looks so weak and not active in any form.
