Crime / Fulani's Herdsmen Invade Enugu Town !!!!!!!!!! by gogochocolate: 9:18am On Dec 28, 2016
Nsukka- Anxiety and confusion has enveloped Abbi Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Enugu State, following the invasion of the area by Fulani herdsmen who unleashed mayhem on the people, killing a brother and sister apart from razing down about seven houses and several motorcycles. Herdsmen… as death merchants Altogether, 19 persons were declared missing in the community even as several others were also wounded with machetes by the invaders. It was gathered that the Fulani herdsmen numbering over 30 emerged from the bush, and began to attack the people in the community last Thursday, killing their victims and maiming others with machetes before fleeing into the bush unharmed. The two relations who were killed were identified as Fidelis Okeja, 45, and his sister Mercy, 50. Fidelis and Mercy were sitting outside their compound around 6.30pm discussing when suddenly, about 30 masked Fulani herdsmen emerged from nowhere and them instantly. They later went ahead and attacked other members of the community with machetes, burnt some houses before retreating into the bush. Investigations by Vanguard, revealed that sporadic shooting by the suspected Fulani herdsmen sent shivers into the inhabitants of other parts of the community who scampered for safety amid confusion. A reliable source in the community said that the people were taken unawares by Fulani herdsmen, adding that the police and members of the local vigilante group were yet to respond to cries of the people before the invaders escaped into the bush. ‘’The most worrisome aspect of the Fulani invasion of the community was that about 19 people are still missing as nobody can give account of them. Those missing were last seen on the fateful day. The community formed search parties in groups, combing bushes within and outside the community for days now, yet no sign of success has been recorded,’’ he noted. ‘’We have lodged formal complaint at both Adani police station and Police Area Command Nsukka, but no arrests have been made over the matter. The Fulani herdsmen were armed to the teeth with dangerous weapons when they invaded us. “Two people killed while 19 missing, several others brutalised with deep machete cuts now lying critical down at different hospitals. “The corpses of the deceased Fidelis and Mercy have been deposited at Bishop Sanahan Hospital, Nsukka while the search for the missing 19 people continues,” he said. A senior officer at the Police Area Command, Nsukka who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed the story describing the attack on Abbi community as pathetic and sorrowful as two biological relations were killed and several others wounded,” among others He, however, said that full scale investigations has commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the barbaric attack on the community. The Officer, however, said that the police were yet to receive the report of missing persons in the community on the account of the incident, but appealed to the community not to take laws into their hands by engaging in reprisal attack. Meanwhile, a team of anti-riot policemen has been drafted to the community to beef up security in the area and beyond.

I disagree with the first advice though about driving. If you came to canada from the UK, Ireland, Japan or Australia. The only test you will need to take is an eye test, and you would be given your advanced license straight away. Whereas if you come from Nigeria, you would need to take a road test to even get your basic license. I have driven in countries using both RHD and LHD, there is not much difference... The most important thing is understanding the road rules. In a country like Nigeria..road rules hardly exist and irrespective of whether you move to canada or australia. You would need to take a driving road test.

Bros imagine you coming straight out of the plane and given a right hand drive car to drive in a new country, be frank would you feel confident to drive it ? Add that to coping with various signs you see in on the roads in Canada, different road design (separate demarcation for turning traffic) and having to depend fully on the GPS of the car because you don't know your way round anywhere. It could be disconcerting for any new immigrant coming from Nigeria where there is basically no form of road signs or traffic laws. I had driven for several years in Nigeria but the first time i drove in Canada with it was almost like i lacked confidence driving for the first time. My first trip my whole family just de pray because for the first time you have to drive and depend on a strange GPS voice for direction. The first time i heard " Keep right or left of the Forth" grin grin grin grin i was slightly perplexed but after about a three days i was driving my family everywhere in Canada. In the UK, fear never gree me to touch any right hand drive because the move in opposite directions to us in Nigeria. It takes a lot of the mental orientation to be able to cope and deal with that. My experience as a new immigrant with a family showed me that you have to learn to fend for yourself from day one as everybody is so busy to help you and believe me driving is key to settling down. Some kind of interviews i attended during my first few days in Canada the main area of concern for the job agency was if i could drive. Once i said yes, i got the job.

I though about trying both countries then both i have a family it and it would have cost me about an additional two million naira for flight tickets to Australia aside having to source for apartments and pay for them and maintain my family for that duration. The costs were seriously adding up in such a short time. I had to pay close to 1.3 million naira for Aussie visa for i and my family asides the medicals which cost about 180 thousand naira at Lagos (This expenses where done at the old exchange rate) now the cost would have been probably twice. Travelling to Australia and Canada for this type of experiment would have meant serious more expenses and i would still have to choose one at the end so i simply stuck to Canada and choose my life in the deep freezer. grin grin grin grin grin grin. For months i dey find sweat wey i no dey see. Bros no matter what decision you take you would still feel the other one might have been better grin grin grin grin grin. take is from me.

OP, I was in the same shoe like you about two years ago. I applied, paid for and got both the Australia PR and Canadian PR. My own take s that the choice depends on you entirely. You would find it easier to integrate into Canadian system than the Australian because of certain similarities between Nigeria and Canada.
1. You would find it much more easier to drive in Canada than in Aussie. Believe me driving a car in the western world is so critical to survival and to getting certain key jobs. Australia uses right hand driving while Canada uses what we have in Nigeria. I was able to start driving comfortable in Canada barely a week after arriving Canada. You would have to learn driving again in aussie.
2. You should also look at where you have people that can give you soft landing and put you through the system as this is always critical for a new immigrant.
3. Australia has an excellent weather and Canada for me feels like living in a deep freezer virtually all year round.
4. Canadian system have many provincial regulations and just by moving from one province to another you have to start redoing things from the scratch again. Each has its own pros and cons but whatever you choose you will keep day dreaming about the other and wondering if the grass at the other side is not greener. grin grin grin grin. Anyway, i choose Canada in my case and still wonder in my moments if Aussie would not have been better option but only God Knows.

shinarambo1:

Your course content will not make you fit as a steam operator. Steam/power engineers are hands on like trades e.g electrician, millwright, plts e.t.c You would need plant hours(steam time) and several certification exams as you progress through the classes(5th-4th-3rd-2nd-1st). A degree would not also grant you waivers in the certification exams.

For the real engineering, you would need to write fundamentals of engineering exams and some other regulatory ones since your engineering degree is not from North America. If you have a masters degree+verifiable work experience in engineering from a developed country, some or all of the exams could be waived.

Concerning internship, you need to clear all the exams(if any) before you would be given the go-ahead by the province to seek an employer for internship so that you can get your engineer-in-training designation. Co-op differs from internship. What you would get in-between school terms are co-op and employers are strict about student returning back to school after the work term. If you are lucky and did a good job, you could be given an offer to return after your studies, then you can now begin an internship which will grant you EIT status. Co-op does not count towards internship hours.

Note: requirements (although similar) may vary across provinces.

With regards to power plants, it's just like any other engineering firm out there. You have all dept from production, field, engineering, IT, HR, management e.t.c. Pay are determined by union and varies across province..In canada, even with our small population, provinces are like seperate countries. They have their own rules and regulations.

Power engineers(steam operators) are still the best paid cos of longshift, overtime hours, dirty and hot work enviroment, remote locations e.t.c but entry into a power plant is very competitive for PEs since there are very few power plants that make use of steam boilers. Most plants in Canada are going green or being shut down for hydro, solar, thermal and wind. For example, Ontario has shut down all its coal fired plants. I believe they still have nuclear plants though.

Shinarambo i need to reach you as soon as possible. i immigrated to Canada last year under the federal skilled worker program. i was a telecoms engineer in Nigeria but am still trying to fit into the engineering profession here. i am getting ready to write the Professional Practice Examination under APEGA but you seem to know so much about the power engineering profession which i am interested in going into. I would inbox you to see what materials i can get from you for both the fundamentals of engineering exams and the PPE practice questions.

They said the mistake was from the way the name was written on the long form birth certificate. i would have loved to use your contact but they surprised me by been very efficient and sending the documents immediately my application got to them,

Madam Hotstepper thanks again for all the help. My wife managed to get the emergency travel certificate for our baby from the Nigerian embassy yesterday. There was a topographical error on the travel certificate as my baby's surname was mis-spelt on the form even though it was just a minor one. i would like to know if this could pose a problem to baby and prevent her from traveling ? We have sent several emails to the Nigerian embassy but they are yet to respond. Her remaining documents and Canadian passport bears her correct name just the emergency travel certificate contains the error. Thank you.

You made the right choice. I dont know whats wrong with thebppl there . I think they even close at 1:30 while other embassies close at 4:30 lol.

If i tell u my experience with my son in 2011 ehh. Went to ottawa by road in the decembwr winter . Each time i go they tell me i am missing sumthing yet it is not on their website they first told me i should chexk and do my application and payment nd bring it with documents and come.

I alwqys leave around 4 am by raod with a child not up to 3 months old and rebooked flight up to 2 tines. The 3rd time i went there, told them my fligjt is in 2 days and i am not going to book it again cuz its money i am spending and time. God just brought one woman like that and helped me ooo. That was how i got the passport on thr 3rd day.

Whike in uni. I knoew friends who sent their passport for renewal in june cuz they wanted to go home in for xmas and never got it and no letter. After calling countlews times before getting someone, they were told that their passport in is Naija cuz they dont have the machine here to do it .

Nothing works oooo. Na so i just made friend there ooo. The person will charge u but it will be way easier, cheaper and faster if u were to go there in person.

I thought I was just unlucky. Those guys in Nigerian Embassy make mockery of what a consular service is supposed to provide. Imagine putting up phone lines on your website and not picking up your calls. Yet the embassy does not even have much traffic in terms of visa applications. Imagine if they were like the USA embassy that handles thousands of applications only God knows how they would cope. For crying out loud they are in Canada and not Nigeria and they see how things work here.

Hotstepper. I have opted for the emergency travel certificate for my child as I understand it is much faster to get for my baby. However, I have tried reaching the Nigerian Embassy visa section for two straight days and believe me those guys are not picking their calls. The calls are just routed to voice mail without anyone picking it.I was even thinking the Canadian attitude and life style would have changed them but they keep proving me wrong. Please I would PM you for the guys number that has direct access to the embassy so that I can process it. Fly ticket to Nigeria has already been booked. Thanks again for all the work.

Madam hotstepper. Thanks for the lovely work. My wife recently put to birth and has to travel to Nigeria wirh the baby in 3 weeks time. Please what document would-be easy to get from the Nigerian embassy in ottawa quickly to allow the baby travel to Nigeria due to time contraint. Should she get apply for an emergency travel certificate or Nigerian visa or get a Nigerian passport outrightly for the baby. Please I am a PR based in Halifax Nova Scotia and would not have time off work to make the trip to Ottawa for the passport or can the passport be issued without the baby being physically present at the embassy.
Politics / Re: NNPC Is Now 'northern Nigeria Petroleum Company' - Nigerians Slam Buhari by gogochocolate: 2:07pm On Jul 05, 2016
plaetton:

Whereas the above statement may be construed as being tribalistic, the GLARING FACTS of Nigeria's sordid history ATTESTS to it's VERACITY.

That both OBJ and GEJ united Nigeria by running truly pan-Nigerian administrations where merit took priority over tribe really really annoyed the northern elites.

That both OBJ and GEJ expanded the middle class ( dominated by southerners) really really annoyed the northern elites.

That both the OBJ and GEJ invested so much on education , Northern education especially, was taken as an unforgivable insult to the northern feudal elites.
How dare OBJ and GEJ remind them of the their glaring failures against their own people.

The irony is that the type of hatred that the northern elites have GEJ or anything related to GEJ administration is oddly directly proportional to the high level of attention GEJ paid to northern education and economic development.

Again, this might appear like a tribalistic rant, but let's do away with the political correctness and call a spade a spade. After all, Buhari and brethren have absolutely NO pretences about political correctness or their agenda.

Let's take a minute and reflect, for those old enough, that anytime things appear to be getting good in Nigeria , the northern elites intervene to take us back a few decades.

Look back at 1983, when this same Buhari committed treason against his fatherland by overthrowing a Democratic government, a growing and maturing democracy.
What happened to Nigeria thereafter ? undecided

Let's look back at 1993 when the whole nation united and voted for a new Democratic government, MKO Abiola.
Again, what happened next?
The same northern elites scuttle that peaceful transition that would have united Nigeria in more ways than imagined.

Then came Abacha, and the tyranny of that feudal Despot took Nigeria back another 2 decades.

Was it an accident that after POWER shifted to the South for the better part of the last 16years, that our economy began to grow, debts paid off, boost in education, boost in agriculture, boost in trade, the largest economic expansion since the colonial days, the largest expansion of the middle class ( the backbones of any economy) since the colonial era ?

Wow!
And what an odd coincidence (?) that the same Buhari is back, and is quickly taking Nigeria back to the LOCUST years, the years of hunger, despair and desolation.

What an odd, but very very sad coincidence indeed.
cry

God bless you my brother for aptly describing the Nigerian problem

Most Nigerian families I know here, that are Canadian Permanent Residents are generally issued 10 years (120 months) if visa is granted. I was surprised at first when I arrived but considering the close knit relationship between Canada and USA it definitely makes sense. Some of my Nigerian Friends that are Canadian Permanent Residence have what they call Nexus card that allows them enter the USA without a visa by just flashing the card that the USA / Canada Border. Quick question, so six of my friends from Rwanda got 10 years Visa to the States, My Visa just got approved (waiting for passport), any chance a Nigerian can get 10 years too? (Bearing in mind that one Rwandan got just one year and another Nigerian got five years)??

We r students in Canada.
Thanks.

A Nigerian passport holder that is a permanent resident in Canada automatically gets 10 years US visa when they apply and if approved. They have different visa policies for different visa offices in various countries depending on the certain classification. The maximum visa tenor Lagos or Abuja Visa Office can issue anyone applying from Nigeria is 24 months . The Visa offices in Canada can issue up to 10 years depending on the visa officer perception of the applicant and circumstances. I just checked Rwanda passport holders and found out that they qualify for 10 years visa validity and what it means is the USA visa office in Kigali Rwanda can issue 10 years visa to a Rwandan . Nigeria is still better than some countries like Congo and Chad with one month and three month maximum visa validity.

It is dangerous when politicians or bloggers take advantage of a challenge to create non existing crisis that could destroy the country and cause ethnic cleansing. I am writing as a concerned citizen who knows how dangerous such actions could be.

The herdsmen vs farmers crisis predates colonialism. It is an issue of misunderstanding between cattle rearers and subsistence farmers as a result of inability of the herdsmen to control animal intrusion into people's farmlands which leads to heavy losses on the part of the farmers. The farmers usually in retaliation kill the intruding animals to avenge destruction of their cash crops and the uninformed herdsmen view that as a declaration of war hence the resultant invasions and communal clashes.

You are a disgrace to your self and community for coming out to defend this evil regime. Even the presidential spokesman who are highly paid have kept quiet because they understand these are precarious times. Do you know what it means to lose loved ones to this Fulani marauders without help from any security agents. This ethnocentric government will lead this country to destruction. People like you should keep quiet as a mark of respect for the dead if you don't have anything meaningful to say. Rationalizing the killings of these people is spitting on their corpses
I feel deeply pained over this incident because the intelligence was available and all the security were giving prior information about the incident but they choose to look the other way.

The farmers failed to fence their farms with barbed wire to prevent trespassing of their farmlands.
