Yes, obj is well informed yet billions meant for power projects were siphoned under his nose. grin

U sure dey naija!? grin

Whether dry season or not, with generator powering the stadiums, hotels, etc light will not be an issue. After all, we have hosted FIFA competitions despite shortage of power. Abi, you know know?

Even as developed as korea is, dey get stand by generator for stadiums, hotels, homes etcetera why? Because dem dey take light sometimes yet dem hosted FIFA world cup.

What are those infrastructures you're talking about? I think they only exist in your imagination because the ones I know are currently under construction. EOD

FiFA U17 and U20 world cups were conceived by FIFA to develop the game talent-wise and also the infrastructure in developing countries.
That is why you see countries like Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago,Nigeria, Finland and the likes host those tournaments.

Even the U17 world cup Nigeria hosted, proved to be very challenging. FIFA threatened at some point to strip Nigeria off the hosting right since we were behind schedule in preparations. Our good o'l friend Jack Warner did us a favour by collecting $omething which proved quite persuasive. Even at that, Mexico, I think was in line to replace Nigeria at a point.
The tournament itself wasn't smooth sailing.I was at the stadium when Costa Rica played Turkey and the lights went off! 15mins. Some games were held up due to waterlogged pitch.

The same scenario played out in 99. Infact Nigeria was supposed to host the earlier edition but because we were behind schedule in addition to the breakout of an epidemic disease, was it yellow fever? That right was stripped and pushed up to 99. Then came 99, we were also behind schedule that the hosting right was yet again almost stripped but for our O'l friend again (Jack Warner) coming to the re$cue. He collect wella and even went home with a chieftency title. His influence was pivotal in FIFA retaining Nigeria as host in 99.

Nigeria is a poor 3rd world country. Wheather anyone likes it or not. The much talked about 2018 budget is largely financed by foreign aids and you're here making mouth. Excuse me.

Obasanjo left seat of power 10 years ago and he is nolonger in power. We do need to talk about those irrelevant past issues.

Currently, I am in Lagos. Light is regulated in a way that everyone knows the exact time when light will be off or on.

Have you ever seen or heard that before? No! But it is gradually happening and it will get better if the power plants projects are completed.

Note, anybody can generate light by himself now. Let us see how we exploit this option to improve the light.

However, Generator is an alternative to power light. EOD

Since the numbers of countries going to taking part in the world cup, we can host the world cup with some west African countries including Morocco. Not necessary he host it alone.

The bolded are already projects on ground. We don't need $50b to host the world cup.

Ask yourself what Germany used that money for.
Obasonjo is a well informed person having been president and actually ran the economy of a country. The level of Intel at his disposal cannot be waved off by anyone with a backhand.
If he says $1B =1KMW then that's what it is.

The improvements you're noticing in electricity is simply as a result of the raining season which coincides with the peak period and high water levels of the hydro power plants.
By dry season when the water levels go down, the production output of those hydro plants will drop significantly and the national output could be hovering anywhere around 2000-3000MW.

The infrastructural challenges Nigeria will have to offset just to be ready to host the world is monumental. I have been to a world cup, I understand how much hosting countries invest to get things done.
This wishful thinking that Nigeria can host the world cup is akin to the emperor and his new cloths.

I know there is a huge challenge in hosting the world but it is not impossible to host it.

Qater hotels are concentrated in Doha. It is unlike Nigeria with hotels in major cities. Besides, they are using only 8 cities unlike 12 cities used by Russia.

The reason for that is, FIFA wants to rotate the hosting ri right of the world cup among the continents hence the need to adjust with level of continents according to their situations.

However, we can't bid for the 2022 and 2026 FIFA world cup because it have been awarded already.

Therefore, we are talking about bidding for 2030 FIFA world cup which is about 12 years to come.

Now, considering the amount of money spent on infrastructures so far and the fact that we will not remain stagnant for 12 years, how can one in his right mindset think we still need to spend $50b?

Will we use $50b dollars to build hotels and stadiums, when already billions of dollars have been pumped into constructiond of 4 international airports and local airports, construction of railway line running from North to South, East to West and South to East, constructions of inter states roads, construction of mono/metro lines, construction of power plants, construction of the biggest refinery in Africa and refineries all over, construction of 3 largest gas plant in the world etcetera?

Are we building all these things just to host the world cup or encourage inflow of internal direct foreign investment to boast our economy?

Abi, we should continue to dwell with such parochial attitudes?

You're just making mouth like a typical Nigerian.
Let me give you a little breakdown. According to Obasanjo's arithmetic, $1B =1KMW of electricity. If we are to add about 10KMV to what we already generate, Nigeria may be on the road towards generating what the country needs, this will cost about $10B. This sum is in absence of operational costs like gas supply and the additional transmission lines. So you could be looking at $10+ 20B for power generation alone and maybe transmission alone!
When you add other operational logistics like security(equipping all the security outfits), accommodation (900,000 standard hotel rooms), transportation( rail, road, airport), medicals, stadium.

If you think Nigeria wont need more than $50B, you must be dreaming. Not when Germany spent $20B to host the event while it was 32 teams. This is a country whose infrastructure is about 200yrs more developed than Nigerias.

How do you get the money to fund this project without the economy crashing? That's the question.
The infrastructures you're pointing at are being done with borrowed funds while the government hopes the incurring cost could be offset by the little increase in crude oil prices.

Infact, let me break it to you. By 2025, Nigeria maybe totally out of business as a result of the breakthroughs in renewable energy in the automobile industry.
Wake up and smell the coffee.

Prior to the 2002 world cup I toured major cities hosting the world cup in Korea. Infact, entered 1 or 2 of the stadiums and even had a feel of the grass.

That's why I can tell you that a city does need 30,000 hotel rooms before they host world cup because some of those cities I visited didn't have such numbers of hotels as at that time. You can lodge in neighbouring cities and still watch your matches.

However, 40,000 or 50,000 fans coming to support a team is normally a special case but if peradventure such happens, cities around are available.

If it is about research, I don tey for dis world cup hosting things for 8 years.

Hosting logistics have always proved to be a huge challenge for any world cup host. I know the Koreans used cruise boats to accomade fans during the world. It was also done during Olympics in Sydney. As a matter of fact, Qatar's LOC are toying with the idea of having tents and using cruise boats to overcome the challenge, since they cannot meet up with the over 600K hotel rooms FIFA mandated them to provide. Mind you, this numver will increase stratospherically with the world cup expansion. We could be looking at an additional 300-400K with the expansion.

Look, world cup is no child's play. The logistics to host the event is very steep especially for an under developed like Nigeria who still depends alot on foreign aids to cater for basic needs of the country.
Nigeria will have to borrow more than $50B just to embark on a white elephant project that is to host a world cup. This number is in absence of local debt.
How many generations will it take to pay off such huge debt deficit and incurring interest? Will there still be life after the world cup? What if crude oil prize takes a hit right after the tournament? How on earth do you cussion the recession that will follow?

The next world cup host, Qatar has as much as $340B in external reserves. With that hedge funds, they can dig themselves out of any economic recession after the world cup if crude prizes prove unstable. How much do your country have in external reserves?

Honestly, I dont know why Nigerians think too much of themselves with this big time Charlie attitude of thinking we are too big, when we have nothing.
This same delusional mindset was the reason some overrated the Super Eagles before the world cup. Even dreaming of making the semi finals, they tagged those of us who were real of having deafist mindset.

But it's the first criterion that determines hosting FIFA world cup. Abi na hotel and light dem go take play football? grin

How many 30,000 standard rooms did Jeju or Suwon have before they hosted the world cup? grin

Why must Akwa Ibom and Plateau state need 30,000 world class hotel rooms? grin

Are they hosting the opening ceremony or the final match?

Are 30,000 foreigners coming to watch group stage matches in Uyo and Job? shocked grin

Abi na hotel their residents go go rent because of world cup?

I don't think they need up to that amount of hotel rooms because the venue are only to host group stage and second round matches, and we know most fans will be from the teams playing in those cities.

We also know that there are certain numbers of tickets allocated to each teams and the host city which favours the host city. Even some teams fans no dey reach 6 while some may reach 3,000. grin Out of which many comes with their family, friend or colleague. Meaning they have to share rooms which reduces the numbers of rooms by half.

However, If that be the case then I am sure Akwa Ibom can host 5,000 fans comfortably in their hotels. Currently, they have more than 2,000 hotel rooms with more than half having world class hotels. Fact

I use to know about Jos hotels but I will leave that to those in Jos to answer you.

Beside these two places, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu, Kano etc have good hotels that can host fans.

In regards to light, generator don't finish for market?

Are the stadiums, Hotels, restaurants, etc relying on NEPA? shocked grin

How did we host the other FIFA competitions without light issues?

On transportation, roads from Lagos to East - Port Harcourt are good. The bad part along Ore to Shagamu is under construction. From Lagos to Ibadan is also under construction.

Abuja to Kaduna by train is functioning while train from Lagos to Kaduna is underconstruction.

There is remodeling and reconstruction of airports in major cities.

We don't need $30b Nada because most of these projects are already ongoing. Gbam!

Maybe you didn't realize the last world cup in Russia, countries like Peru, Colombia and Argentina had as much as 40-50k fans per game, present in the stadium.
Where will those teaming number of fans stay? You expect them to sleep in the stadium?
If hosting world cups was all about having stadium, even Equatorial Guinea can comfortably host the world cup.
Devote your time in doing a little bit of research before you engage in some debates. It makes it easier for everyone.

Yes, a host country gets revenue from sponsors and FIFA but that's not the whole story. USA lost billions after hosting 94, Germany almost went bankrupt after 2006, likewise South Africa and Brazil's economy went belly up after hosting the previous editions.
The money invested in organizing such events is so huge that it cancels out the revenue in the end.

To host the world cup, you firstly need 12 stadiums with at least 40,000 capacity.

How many of those North African countries can boast of
12 stadiums with such capacity? None

Only Morocco has 6 of those while Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria have 3, 2 & 3 respectively while we have 4 of such capacity.

If we put our stadiums side by side with all the aforementioned stadiums, they are inferior to most of our stadiums.

As you can see, are even ahead of these countries in terms of hosting football matches.

Hosting world cups is not just about stadia. The logistics to cater for tourists and visitors is even more important than your beautiful stadia.
For instance, each hosting city will need atleast 30 thousand standard hotel rooms! Can Plateau state, Awka Ibom or Taraba offer this nunber of standard hotel rooms?
How about constant power? Can your country commit to producing constant power for the 1 month tournament?
How about transportation? How good are your inter state roads? Are your trains working? How many decent airports can you boast of in the entire country?
I won't even mention security and about $30B in liquid cash needed to finance the entire project. As it stands, I will be surprised if Nigeria's external foreign reserve is up to $30B.
Hopefully, in 60yrs time, Nigeria will be ready but as it stands. We have ZERO chance!

With respect you are talking about the exceptions not the general trend.

I booked a friend in a average hotel in Lekki 1 and got to talking to one of the reception staff. She had a degree in Finance from Uniben graduated 7/8 years ago and monthly salary was 60k naira.

Maybe she was not being truthful I don't know.

But is that kind of salary not enough to cause deep depression, chronic desolation and despair.

And that's a graduate what about the multitudes who don't even have a degree and or a job of any substance.

Can you not see the depth of despair that our people are going through. Maybe you are not in Nigeria and can't empathise.

Because I certainly feel thier pain.
The average salary of a receptionist in an average hotel is not more than N25000/month. You can quote me anywhere.
N60000/month is grossly over exaggerated for a receptionist working in an average hotel, except maybe she added tips which come her way from benevolent visitors.
To be honest, I consider it a miracle seeing how blue collar workers survive in Nigeria.

Most of the players who go abroad do not even get reported as they go to less fancied places.

The best players often get the chance to go on trial abroad even before they join the league. Some never pursue football professionally. Unfortunately, those that go abroad sometimes end up with slave contracts and disappear. I have heard stories of Nigerians who went abroad to play football but ended up doing menial jobs in Europe to get by.

That's my point. Alot leave Nigeria unreported. Now compare the number of those who leave reported and unreported with the ones who justle for a contract with a local team, you will be amazed.
I'm taking my time to address this because, I've seen a lot of comments on this thread saying that Nigerian players don't even want to play in the NPFL. This very far from reality and not true atall.

If only you know the number of players who will kill to get signed up by junior Enyimba or Rangers. Not even the main team.

Sometime last year, Rangers held an open screening exercise for their feeder team. Over 2000 players showed up. Infact it took nearly 4weeks for them to conclude the screening exercise. The numbers overwhelmed them so much that they cut the exercise short. Mind you, this was for their feeder team. Not the main team.

This is the reason why I always clamor for the development of Nigerian football from bottom up. A lot of players in Nigeria are unemployed. Those "academies" do not pay them a dime. They will jump at the chance to sign for Lobi stars and earn 150k a month.
Let our comment reflect the reality on ground. That's all I ask.

West African has the best talents on the continent but the best talents do not stay long at all. Many do not even bother to play in the league.

You say this like these players are spoilt with choice deals abroad. Take it from me, for every 10 individuals who get deals abroad, 90 end up in the Nation wide league, NNL AND NPFL.
Those who are lucky to secure deals abroad obviously get reported, the rest who get signed up by amateur, NNL and NpFL sides do not get reported.

How would you compare Qfs with world cup. A world cup group game has each teams playing three matches each. After losing your first, it becomes difficult for you to come out as top of your group. Here, you fate is in the hands of your opponents. In a QFs, you have six group gamed each and a chance to redeem yourself against whoever gave you your first defeat. Five games are still left and you are seeing us dropping if it were to be one team per group. This ain't about appealing to emotions; save that line until it gets to the time calculator is needed (lets still assume it's only one team going through). As for now, anyone can top that group.

Problem is that you see it only from the Nigerian perspective.
You think the other countries ahead of Nigeria on points do not have it in their hands to qualify too? Nigeria as it is are competing already from a deficit of 3 points and - 2goals.
We would have had our work really cut out for us if only 1 team qualified. It's not about making bold claims. This is football.

Sentiments aside, it is very difficult, almost impossible to top a group after loosing your first game to direct rival in a round robbing format.

Not only that, he needs to sort out and find a stable position for himself on the pitch. The crossover playing on the wings and midfield is proving difficult for him to manage. He dropped more bad games than good ones last season on the wings.
He also needs to work on his work ethic because I hear Emery is all about press, press and press.

These days you can get that big pay check playing inythe gulf region, China or America, so why not?!

Nowadays, it is very hard to find a player who'd take a paycut to play for a big team just for the sake of it.
It only happens if the player is returning to his hometown club where he has a future beyond his playing career.

Mikel did not play a league game for Plateau and yes, i have seen this report. Unfortunately, we have no records, we could have gone back to check.

We do have records, just that it may not be online. Didn't you see the link I posted where Bitrus Bewarang, the then coach of Plateau Utd said in clear terms that they paid Mikel N20, 000 a month?
You think plateau are so buoyant that they paid their feeder team players N20, 000 a month?
