Education / Meet Lucy Akwawa, Nigeria's Most Beautiful Student, Who Sold Indomie & Egg by Goldpen: 6:36pm On Mar 29, 2019
Nigeria's Most Beautiful Student, Lucy Akwawa in an interview with The Bug magazine revealed that contrary to popular belief, a good number of students in Covenant University are from average and below average families who struggle like most Nigerians to foot their bills. She explained how she managed a petty trade through school.

She is the very first winner of the elite pageant, crowned Queen at the event which took place on the 21st of December at the prestigious Lekki Coliseum.

Excerpt from Lucy Akwawa's profile on The Bug magazine:

Lucy started school at Our Lady's Nursery and Primary School, but it was Immaculate Conception Secondary School (both in Bauchi) that she develop her ambitious personality which has kept her success-bound ever since. When she got into Covenant University, she was already ready to take on the academic and social rigour the school is known for. In Lucy's words: "Covenant University is a very disciplined school and it takes alot to comply with all the rules. All these made me more accountable, responsible and self disciplined".

"Going through C.U was a miracle because sometimes it seemed like the school fees was not gonna come. People have this mindset that All students in C.U have wealthy parents and are more than capable, financially. But that's not true; there are the rich, the average and the financially challenged.

"I had to take up responsibilities for myself when monthly allowance wasn't coming in steady as usual due to some financial challenges we had at home. The most eaten food in C.U is Indomie as that is the only thing we are allowed to cook. So i came up with a business idea of selling eggs and cooking noodles for people just to have an alternate source of income - yeah i love cooking and people loved my noodles. Covenant University added to my life positively, the teachings of the chancellor are still engraved in my heart. And i feel more than proud saying 'I attended Covenant University'"

Celebrities / Shola Fapson Vs Taxify Driver: Sad Reality Of Rape Claim by Goldpen: 9:28pm On Jan 26, 2018
I would let this be, had it happened at a different time, but this is one too many rape accusations. They say injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere; keeping quiet about it just because we are not victims is tantamount to accepting the act and being accomplices to it.

Few days back, an actress, Shola Fapson accused a Taxify driver of kidnap and rape. Her own story however, had nothing close to an intention to rape in it. Rape is defined by dictionary.com as: "unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim."

Going by the above definition, even an attempt to rape isn't sufficient to call anyone a rapist; just as someone who takes up a weapon in a fight can't be called a murderer till they commit murder. The weight of her allegations is worrisome, even more troubling when one considers that she is a self acclaimed Criminologist who should know better. Rape is not a word that was hitherto used carelessly, it was rarely and responsibly used but its growing reckless use by regular people and encouraged by socialites as a trend, is a threat to everyone.

It threatens everyone because every man is now at risk of being labeled rapist; including us, our fathers, our brothers, our friends, our colleagues, our leaders, etc. It threatens everyone because abusing the word "rape" trivializes the act and put women at risk of being overlooked when the genuine victims go public with their ordeals. When rape stories make the news, we ought to be furious and take it seriously, and not treat it as a normal thing - subconsciously. I understand that many ladies come face-to-face with sexual assault and other forms of threats on a daily basis, hence the reason why many feel obliged to lend a voice against it in any form - I really empathize. However, what we all need in the end is a more secure society, and we can't have it if the "media court" pronounce negative judgment on any man accused of rape, we can't win the war if we create the impression that the only logical thing for a man to do when he is threatened by rape accusation is to silence the supposed victim before it makes the news. By guaranteeing the safety of the accuser and the accused in a criminal matter till both side explain well enough, we protect other victims, we protect ourselves too. We want to encourage more victims to come out of the closet, but we also need to make people know that false accusations won't be condoned.

I know very little about Shola Fapson, but her indiscriminate strong words in virtually every statement captured by the media so far, oozes arrogance and of course recklessness. Going by this first impression and her story, as well as the story of the accused and defamed driver, gives me a summary of the root of their ugly encounter. Simply put, she booked the taxi for a ride and - whether or not she wanted to ride without giving destination or the driver tried to do the job off records - she spoke in a manner that didn't sit well with the ego of the driver. They both wanted to prove to each other that they were more stubborn than the other, and the rest is history. Shola woke up the next morning not satisfied after exhausting all her physical defense tactics over the night, coupled with her close attachment to social media, decided to take her rival to the gutters once and for all - using her popularity online. There wouldn't have been a confrontation in the first place if it was a regular taxi, because it would have been easier to intimidate them due to their lower financial power and higher level of tolerance. Fortunately/unfortunately most drivers on the new online cab services use cars worth over a million naira, are less tolerant and quick to want to prove that they are not desperate.

For a girl that has "Part time crazy lady" on her Instagram Bio, I'm not surprised that despite briefly blinding a taxi driver who she has so far not shown any evidence of bodily injuries he inflicted, goes on to rain curses on people who didn't buy into her story of the incident on social media. Good thing they seem to be heading to court, I hope they find justice and they keep us posted. Until then, "I hope that with these few points of mine, I have been able to convince you and not confuse you that the word "rape" should not be used without caution".

Politics / The Truth You Need To Know: Buhari And Wife Drama Was Planned by Goldpen: 10:55am On Oct 15, 2016
Nigerians Nigerians Nigerians, can we all have sense? Can we stop being political pawns and read between the lines?

How can you believe that the wife of the president will wake up one morning and run to international media to talk against him?

This is not just impossible to think of a wife of a president, but in this case, a northern Muslim president who is way older and evidently don't forgive or forget.

Do you know that before a wife of the president does anything, the president is aware? Do you know the amount of security details ordered by the president, that monitor all that she does? Do you know how well anyone in the corridor not to talk of "bedroom of power" is prepared before talking NTA, not to mention BBC?

An average Igbo being is arrogant, full of empty pride and

to be honest the eze ndi-igbo messed up in akure
incidence instead of him to respect the oba and lay low
for a while and pull strings while at it, he decided to turn
the deji of akure's levity to stupidity and the youths
decided to protect their culture/heritage their tradition
but instead of e-igbo warriors to correct their brothers
they seem to have deliberately, blindly toed the eze's
path.
The fact that you spit on a Yoruba man 7 times and he
did not react does not mean he is weak, we are peace
loving people but I can promise you one thing fear is not
in our dictionary but my Igbo brothers will see every calm
reaction as trait of weakness that's a wrong notion.
secondly the Igbo community pounced so hard on oba

apologised on behalf of the oba, its not cause we are
weak it cause we are peaceful in nature need I remind
you no Yoruba man living and working in Onitsha will
insult the obi of Onitsha and go scot free but you Igbos
have such leverage why try to use it against us in Yoruba
land??
now the akure youths having observed you people are
rude kids that needs to be flogged to their right senses
you Igbos now play victims,
please to avoid another flogging... respect the Yoruba
culture, obas and laws then you will have nothing to
worry about,
cause now the igbos are painting a bad picture of them

Education / Madonna University Set To Unveil Gigantic Exam Hall To Curb Malpractice (photo) by Goldpen: 3:45pm On Jul 25, 2015
Madonna university prides itself as "university with a difference" and indeed they are living up to that daring motto as they unveil a gigantic examination hall in Elele campus on Monday as the semester exams begin. This they hope will cut down on the worrisome level of examination malpractice and misconduct currently prevalent.

The Bug reports that the said hall stretches a massive kilometer of land which can not be accurately measured yet. The Bug correspondent in the premier private university who provided analogy however States that the entire university can write exam in the hall at once. It begins behind the university's Engineering building and ends just before the Registrar's office.

At time of this report, seats are being lodged into the conference hall  examination hall ahead of Monday's examinations scheduled to take place there.

Previously, exams in the university were organized in few selected halls with about 3 departments writing their exams at once.

The new development has sent shock waves down the spine of students who are now jostling to be prepared to stand alone. A student told The Bug, she felt betrayed. She also added that another worry will be the issue of missing-script which has been a reoccurring decimal in the institution and may now likely skyrocket.

It was also gathered that the hall is not all that will be changed in the upcoming examination; the questions asked which was previously theoretic will now be mixed (theory, subjective, and objective questions).

Education / LASU Postpones Exams Indefinitely, SUG Prepare For Another Fight by Goldpen: 7:42pm On Jul 03, 2015
The management of Lagos State University Ojo, today circulated a bulletin in which it stated clearly that the First Semester examinations which were initially scheduled to start on Monday, 6th July, has now been postponed Indefinitely.

In the bulletin which was obtained by The Bug correspondent in the university, it was stated that the reason for the postponement is the poor compliance of students to the religious course registration. Out of the schools 11,333 student population, 7,774 has registrated and the rest are either yet to register or pay their fees.

Consequently, the university claims on that basis and the fact that the University Senate are unable to meet to reschedule the examinations, it has decided to postpone it.

In an immediate response, the university's Students' Union Government made a press release. See below.

Celebrities / Nollywood Actress, Uche Ogbodo,Fights Over Champagne In A Club Cossy Took Her To by Goldpen: 2:25pm On Jun 29, 2015
This weekend was not the best for Nollywood actress, Uche Ogbodo, given an exclusive information obtained by The Bug. She was ridiculed in a club she and Cossy Orjiakor went to on Friday, we gathered from an informant who witnessed the ugly incedent.

The Bug's informant said that Uche Ogbodo accompanied Cossy Orjiakor to Trace Lounge (Ogba-Lagos) where Cossy was long scheduled to be hosted by the club, thanks the club's Public Relations person, simply known as Ken.

Uche who wasn't invited was welcomed just as the special guest, Cossy, and offered seat. The club PR then served Cossy a bottle of Moet Brut amongst other drinks and she gleefully accepted. Everything was going as planned as Cossy was full of life doing her usual thing, which everyone enjoyed. Shortly afterwards Uche was noticed to be unsettled, poking Cossy and signaling that they should leave the club and that was where the problem started.

Ken as we were told, approached Cossy to find out what Uche's problem was, and Cossy told him that it was because there were no more drinks on their table. Ken then talked to Uche, asked her if she would want a drink and she said yes. He asked her of the drink she wanted and she said Moet Rose. Ken told her that was not possible as Moet Rose was an expensive drink which he didn't have the power will out (by the way, she wasn't the person they were hosting).

He then got her a bottle of Moet Brut and she rejected it, she said he either get her a Moet Rose or he should forget about it. As The Bug's Informant quoted, Ken said "please as a fan of your movies please take the Moët Brut from me as my love for your work". Uche simply replied that he should get out.

Angry Ken lost his mind and told Uche to get out of the club. And then a marathon of words between them ensued. Uche told Ken that he will never be famous in his lifetime and he replied that if not for fans she would be a broke b*tch. Furious Uche didn't digest that, she reportedly said, f*ck Ken and f*ck the fans.

At that point Cossy intervened and tried to calm them down. Ken who was already boiling told Cossy that if she knew she was a famous celebrity, why didn't she buy the Moet Rose herself? He added that "does a beggar have a choice?" When it became obvious that the hatchet wasn't going to be buried that night, Cossy had to leave with Uche and friends since they came in her car.

Cossy confirmed the ugly incedent in an Instagram post she made later

Politics / PDP Declares Nationwide Prayer For Buhari by Goldpen: 7:50pm On Jun 28, 2015
After an evaluation of the first 30 days of President Muhammadu Buhari and All Progressives Congress’ administration, the Peoples Democratic Party says it has become obvious that Nigerians need to join hands in prayers to save the government from further inaction and dithering.

President Buhari assumed office on May 29, 2015.

The PDP said the call for prayers has become necessary given the fact that the Buhari administration is finding it difficult to locate its bearing and even take off and face the challenges of governance at the center.

It described the last 30 days when Buhari took over as “30 days of all motion and no movement.”

The former ruling party said this scenario does not augur well for the polity.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said the enormity of the confusion surrounding the government and party in the last one month makes it imperative for Nigerians to pray as the success or failure of the Buhari administration will not only affect the President and his party but also the entire nation.

His statement said, “We urge Nigerians to join hands in prayers and offer useful suggestions to President Buhari and the APC because with what we have seen in the last 30 days, the present administration is finding it very difficult to get its bearings right while showing no inclination towards implementing its numerous campaign promises for which they were voted into office at the center.

“We are deeply worried that the President who promised to unveil his cabinet two weeks after his inauguration, has not been able to decide on key appointments such as ministers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, a Chief of Staff and advisers in key sectors of the economy.

“This is more so as the delay has brought government business in ministries, departments and agencies to a dangerous standstill with coordination of important policies vested on ministers and the SGF now in tatters while the system drifts.

“This situation also creates loopholes through which overzealous persons around the President can connive with unscrupulous elements in the bureaucracy to siphon public resources in addition to possibly misleading the President to violate due process by spending beyond and outside his statutory limits.”

Metuh added that the economy was already suffering due to the action and inaction of the President.

Already, he said that the stock market has lost over N238 billion while the All-Share Index fell by 849.87 basis points as of June 19.

According to him, “The situation is taking its toll on the economy sector, which has in the 30 days witnessed unprecedented decline with a terrifying crippling of foreign and domestic investments including activities in the money and capital market sectors.

“Under President Buhari, the stock market has lost over N238 billion while the All-Share Index fell by 849.87 basis points as of June 19.

“In security, apart from the directive to relocate the counter terrorism command center to Borno State and seeking assistance from foreigners, no other concrete step has been taken in the fight against insurgency which the President, in his April 22, 2015 CNN interview, promised to end within his two months in office.

“Instead, the anti-terrorism effort has completely lost steam in the last 30 days, with insurgents, who had already been pushed to the verge of surrender in the Sambisa forest by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, now surging back and spreading into the country.”

In this regard, he urged the President to confront insurgency and issues of national security with all the vigour they deserve while calling for restrain from actions capable of destroying the fabrics of security intelligence.

He also called for adequate respect for all organs of internal security such as the Directorate of State Security, which, he said, is answerable to the Nigerian state and as such should not be publicly ridiculed by an aide of the President.

Metuh said his party was worried about happenings at National Assembly and urged the APC not to undermine that arm of government

Education / 5 Anambra Students To Represent Nigeria In Singapore For The 27th World Debate.. by Goldpen: 2:12pm On Jun 24, 2015
Five students from various secondary schools in Anambra will represent Nigeria in the 27th World Schools Debating Championship scheduled for Singapore between June 27 and July 3.

The students are: Adachukwu Onyekwena (Girls Secondary School, Amaenyi, Awka), Nnamdi Udoji (Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha) and Chinemerem Oguaba (Awada Secondary School, Obosi).

Other s are: Chukwuebuka Obichi (Army Day Secondary School, Onitsha) and Nneka Chigozie(Mater Ammabillis, Secondary School, Umuoji).

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview in Awka on Wednesday that the students had qualified for the world competition.

She said that after coming tops in the various national debate competitions at the secondary schools level, the five students were now set to slug it out with their mates at the international level.

The commissioner congratulated them for being outstanding among their peers and urged them to be good ambassadors of the state while in Singapore.

Omenugha said their success was a positive manifestation of the premium Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra placed on education, which she said had been revolutionary.

She said the state government would provide all the necessary support to facilitate the students’ journey to Singapore, as well as ensure that they had a brilliant outing as she urged them to remain focused.

NAN reports that the successful students included three females and two males from five secondary schools in Anambra.

Politics / We Have The Cure For AIDS, Ebola, MERS, Cancer, Etc - North Korea by Goldpen: 7:51pm On Jun 19, 2015
North Korea says it has developed a vaccine that is “very effective” in treating MERS, Ebola and AIDS, the state mouthpiece KCNA reported, as well as a range of other diseases that modern medicine is yet to find a cure for.

The drug, known as Kumdang-2, is reportedly able to treat everything from AIDS to tuberculosis and cancer, as well as “harm from the use of computers” and morning sickness, according to the drug’s website.

The isolated country’s news agency KCNA is notorious for making hyperbolic claims about North Korea’s achievements — from scientific breakthroughs to the sporting prowess of its leaders — and has previously trumpeted the efficacy of the drug.

Developed by North Korea’s Pugang Pharmaceutic Company — and promoted under the tag line “Everyone has the right to be healthy” — the vaccine is made of extracts from ginseng with the injection of rare earth elements, KCNA said.

“The Kumdang-2 injection, a strong immune activator, which is produced in DPRK (North Korea), is very effective in curing diseases caused by malignant viruses such as SARS, Ebola and MERS,” said the report.

The impoverished communist state, known to have a weak health infrastructure, claims to have been testing this cure-all drug since 1989.

South Korea is currently battling with an outbreak of MERS, which has killed 24 people while 166 cases have been confirmed — the largest outbreak of the disease outside Saudi Arabia.

North Korea has taken drastic measures in the past to guard against viral diseases, and it has recently intensified screening and vowed “watertight” measures at airports and border crossings to ward off the MERS virus.

Last year it imposed a four-month ban on foreign tourists, purportedly due to concern over the spread of the Ebola virus.
