Igbo civilisation dates back to 3000 BCE — New archaeological finding

A new archaeological discovery has revealed that Igbo civilisation began as far back as 3000 BCE.

This was disclosed by Engr. Obi Barth Oyibo Thompson, a member of Igbo Leaders of Thought, during the launch of his book titled “Centuries of Igbo Civilisation: Origin, Cosmology, and Epistemology of the Igbo People.”

The event, which also marked his 80th birthday celebration, took place at Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State over the weekend.

Thompson stated that long before the arrival of colonial powers in Nigeria, Igbo civilisation had already emerged in Southeastern Nigeria by 3000 BCE.

“Evidence derived from archaeology—specifically iron artifacts—shows that by 2000–1500 BCE, even before the Sumerians, the Igbo people had developed iron-working skills,” he said.

He urged the Igbo community to sustain their ingenuity in science and technology, which has historically set them apart.

The octogenarian emphasized the need for Ndigbo to appreciate their rich history and narrate their own stories, rather than relying on colonial perspectives that often distorted African civilizations in favor of Western narratives.

He called on the Igbo people to be proud of their culture and history and to disregard distorted narratives that undermine their heritage.

Thompson also stressed the importance of preserving the Igbo language and culture, which he said are under threat from Western influences.

“Colonialism destroyed every facet of life and identity of the Aboriginal Igbo,” he remarked.

Thompson announced that his book would be distributed free of charge to students across Igbo land, to ensure that the authentic history of the Igbo people, supported by anthropological and archaeological evidence, is made accessible to every Igbo person.

“The greatest profit I want to make from this book is for a child to read it and gain knowledge from it. I want our people to understand Igbo history and culture,” he said.

He further lamented the erosion of Igbo language, culture, and history due to Western civilization and called for a cultural awakening among the people.

Thompson also expressed concern over the hate and mutual suspicion that had been introduced among Nigeria’s various ethnic nationalities, which, according to him, coexisted peacefully before colonial interference.

The ceremony was well-attended by friends, family, and

PoliticsRe: Tinubu's Reforms: States Significantly Reduce Debts In One Year by Good2go1: 7:28am On May 04, 2025
You don't know this people, all his wrong doing will be attributed to other people, while others achievement will be attributed to him even when he leaves office.

that is how he built Lagos without making any significant contributions to the development of the state
PresidObi:
Are they counting this as an achievement? grin

I thought it should be attributed to states financial efficiency and not Federal government efforts? A wasteful governor must be wasteful.

Federal government should do their own savings and not claim the achievements of states as their own. Show us how much the Federal government saved.
