An Army Officer told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday that four suspects ofthe Suleja bombing were promised 72 virgins each as incentives.
The officer, whose name was not given forsecurity reasons, was testifying in the case filed by the State Security Service against the six accused Suleja/Madalla bomb attack.
He said in his evidence-in-chief that the information was contained in a cell-phone confiscated from the suspects at the pointof their arrest in Gumel Junction, Kachia inKaduna State.
The witness explained that a total of four mobile phones were ceased from the suspects. According to him, one of the mobile phones carried the promise of incentives and the secret code to arrange and detonate an explosive.
The suspects are: Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana-Umar, Mohammed Ali and MusaAdam. They were arrested on July 28, 2011 in Kachia, on their way to Kaduna where the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, and other dignitaries were to attend a sporting function on July 29 at the township stadium.

“Save you from the greatest fear. Allow you save from hell fire. 70 members of your family shall marry you 72 virgins in paradise, gives you a crown of respect, which even the prophet will be impressed with.
“Keep your soul in the green birds of paradise and your wish to return to the World and die as he died because of the good blessings and reward you encounter after such noble last deed. I pray for you to do such a noble deed,’’ the message stated.
Mr Emeka Okoro, the counsel to the accused persons, however, applied for a short adjournment to enable him to access the officer’s statement which was not before the court.

CrimePoliceman Molests Woman In Presence Of Baby by gramci(op): 8:51am On Nov 24, 2012
A police corporal with the Imo State Command is currently in trouble for raping a nursing mother, who had gone to the station to seek refuge.
Saturday Sun gathered that Mrs.Maureen Anyalebechi, from Umukabi Autonomous Community, in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area, Imo State, had, on November 10, 2012, gone to Umuguma Police Station to pass the night, when she could not locate the residence of her brother in the World Bank area of Owerri West Local Government Area.

Owing to the fact that it was latein the night, Mrs. Anyalebechi went to the police station with her seven-month-old baby, where she met Corporal ChigozieOdenigbo and another female police officer.
The victim told Saturday Sun: “When I discovered that it was late to continue searching for my brother’s place, I decided to go to the nearby police station, to beg them to accommodate mefor the night because it was already late.

“As I went in there with my baby, I met two police officers, a lady and a young man, and afterexplaining my situation, the male officer asked me to follow him to one officer’s house, where he claimed mosquitoes would not bite my baby and I thanked him and followed him innocently, but to my greatest surprise, the policeman pouncedon me. He hit me from behind and before I knew what was happening, he snatched my baby from me and flung him away. He was holding me by the throat to stop me from shouting for help and started raping me.”

She revealed that after the police officer had satisfied himself, he helped her to her feet and also picked up her babyand took her back to the police station. Mrs. Anyalebechi further narrated that when they came back to the police station, the female officer was alarmed when she saw that her clothes were torn and asked Corporal Odenigbo to explain what happened to her. The corporal, she said, denied ever doing anything to her.

Mrs. Anyalebechi said that she had to report the matter to the Divisional Police Officer, when hearrived for duty in the morning, who promptly ordered the arrestand detention of Corporal Odenigbo. She told Saturday Sunthat to her surprise, the policeman was released. Sensingthat the police wanted to cover up the crime, she had to contact a lawyer, who took her to the Imo State Police Commissioner, Bolanta

Adisa, last Friday, who summoned the DPO of Umuguma Police Station.
Saturday Sun learnt that upon the confirmation of the rape assault on the nursing mother, CP Bolanta ordered the arrest of Corporal Odenigbo, promising that thorough investigation would be carried out.

He said that if found culpable, the policeman will be prosecutedand dismissed from the Force.
Meanwhile, the police spokesman, Mr. Vitalis Onugu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said that Corporal Odenigbo will face administrative trial.
Saturday Sun also learnt that Corporal Odenigbo was alleged to have sexually assaulted a female officer some months back.

CrimeNigerian Nanny Jailed 80 Years In The US by gramci(op): 8:22am On Nov 24, 2012
Appeals for leniency failed to move a Texas judge who delivered a harsh sentence of 80 years behind bars for Nigerian-American Jessica Tata, convicted in the death of a childkilled in a fire at her home day care in Houston, Texas.

Eight witnesses testified for Tata in the punishment phase ofthe trial on Friday. Twenty two witnesses testified for the prosecution, alleging that she ran an unclean facility where dirty diapers and vomit were strewn on the floor. The deceased child, 16-month-old Elias Castillo, succumbed to a fire ignited when Tata went shopping and left a pan of oil cooking on the stove.

The incident, which took place in February 2011, also left threeother children seriously injured.

During the trial which began Oct. 24, surveillance video was presented that showed her shopping at Target just before the fire occurred. A former Target manager told jurors that Tata did not seem to be in a hurry even after realizing she had left the stove top burner onwhile the kids were at the day care.

Neighbors testified they heard the children crying during their unsuccessful attempts to rescue them from the blaze. Parents of the children who died or were injured told jurors they had trusted Tata, believing she was qualified.

Tata’s attorneys say she never intended to hurt the children, who ranged in age from 16 months to 3 years old, and that she tried to save them.

Among those testifying at the trial was Jessica’s sister Jennifer who defended her sibling but acknowledged she was “hard to handle” as a teenager and didn’t get along with their parents

Tata fled to Nigeria after the fire but was captured there after about a month and returned to the U.S. in March 2011. She has remained jailed since then. Tata was born in the U.S. but has Nigerian citizenship.

Her brother, Ronald Tata, told jurors it was his idea for his sister to go to Nigeria to get advice from their father, who lived there. He said their mother didn’t want his sister to go because “it would look bad.”

Ronald Tata said his sister should be held accountable for what she did, but he also asked the jury for mercy. “I believe in justice and not vengeance,” he said.

Tata also faces three additional felony murder counts and other charges in relation to the other children killed and injured in the fire.

PoliticsExclusive: Video Shows Nigerian Troops Shooting Captives by gramci(op): 8:45pm On Nov 18, 2012
A video obtained by Reuters shows Nigerian troops shootingunarmed captives in broad daylight by the roadside in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the bastion of an Islamist insurgency.
Nigeria's military has long beenaccused of human rights abuses, including summary executions, in the troubled north but there has been no video proof since the first crackdown on the Islamist sect Boko Haram in 2009.
A spokesman for the army said it was "impossible" for Nigeriantroops to do such a thing.
Boko Haram is fighting to carvean Islamic state out of Nigeria, and its fighters have killed hundreds in bomb and gun attacks, many of them from thesecurity forces, since beginningthe uprising three years ago.
The video was taken by a soldier who said he was present while the shootings took place two weeks ago. The soldier, who requested anonymity, passed it to Reuters on Sunday.
In the grainy footage, a man sits down next to three or four corpses piled together on the roadside. He pleads for his life while soldiers shout at him anda crowd looks on a few meters away. "Please don't fire," the man says in pidgin English.
He tries to stand up and get onto the back of a pick up truckto the left. A Nigerian soldier shouts "come out", and drags him off it, shoving him on the ground.
One of them kicks him in the head. Then he and another soldier aim assault rifles at him. Four gunshots are heard and the man lies still next to the others.
Nigerian army spokesman Colonel Mohammed Yerima said he had not seen the video but that the events must have been staged.
"How can they do that? It is notpossible. This is the Boko Haram tactics," He said. "They will do the killing, say it's the military and then Amnesty International and so on will blame us. It's not possible for Nigerian troops to act in this way."
Nigerian forces have repeatedly denied accusations of such abuses, saying the onlytimes they kill suspected militants is during combat. Those captured are questioned or freed, they say.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Michael Posner said on Friday that the United States was seriously concerned by reported abuses committed by Nigerian securityforces in their efforts to quell the insurgency.
Such alleged abuses usually occur shortly after members of the security forces have been killed or wounded in an attack by the sect. The killings in this video happened after a bomb attack on a military patrol further up the road, the soldier who provided the footage said.
Another video from the same source, which he said was taken after the executions, shows soldiers piling up about two dozen bodies in two bloodyheaps on the ground from the back of a military truck.
The videos could spur renewed calls for Nigeria's security forces to change their approach to the insurgency, which critics say is prompting desperate, angry youths to joinBoko Haram and encouraging the northern population to shelter them.
That uprising was sparked by amilitary crackdown on the sect in which hundreds were killed, including its founder and spiritual leader Mohammed Yusuf, who died in police custody.
President Goodluck Jonathan has been accused of treating the conflict as a security problem that can be solved with force alone, rather than addressing the root causes of the insurgency.
Amnesty International issued a report this month in which it said human rights abuses committed by security forces were fuelling the conflict they were meant to end.
The report said a "significant number" of people accused of links with Boko Haram had been executed after arrest without due process, while hundreds were detained without charge or trial and many of those arrested disappeared or were later found dead.
The Nigerian military rejected that report, including accusations that they execute suspects, as "biased and mischievous."

Politics‘How Lam Adesina Prevented Another Civil War’ by gramci(op): 5:13pm On Nov 18, 2012
• Ex-CPS recalls the late gov’s encounter with Buhari

But for the maturity and wisdom of the late former Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Lam Adesina, Nigeria could have been plunged into a second civil war.
A former Chief Press Secretary to the late Governor, Chief Kehinde Olaosebikan, yesterday said in Abuja that a conflict between Yoruba and Hausa-Fulani would have thrown the country into another war.
He told our correspondent that a former Head of State,Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, had led a combative delegation of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) to meet Adesina in 2000 in his office.
According to him, “Preciselyon the 13th of October, 2000, former military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, in company with former Military administrator of Lagos State, General Buba Marwa, had led a heavy team of Arewa ConsultativeForum in a combative moodto the office of the governorin protest against the alleged killings of over 69 Fulani cattle herders in SakiArea of the state.
“General Buhari whose arrival to the Secretariat complex was preceded by scores of lorry loads of Hausa men and boys said pointedly at the executive council chambers of Oyo State that his team came tomeet the governor to seek reasons why the people of Saki should not be dealt with for killing Fulani herdsmen. He did not stop at that, Gen Buhari accusedGovernor Lam Adesina of complicity in the killings and using his position as governor to pervert justice.
He quoted the former Head of State as accusing the former governor of shielding the culprits. According to the General, they therefore wanted immediate stoppage of the killings, justice and compensation for the mass killings of the Fulanis or vengeance across the country.
Olaosebikan added: “As weighty, indicting and provocative as the General’s allegations were against the governor, AlhajiLam Adesina remained unperturbed as he only fired back with his own well-coordinated arsenals inform of refined strategy, robust explanations and effective engagements.
“Lam Adesina identified all the points raised by the General and simply asked the heads of the organisations directly involved to respond.”
He quoted Lam Adesina as saying: “ Before I thank youfor this visit, you have come to tell me something, I also want to tell you something and that something is to make an appeal. General Buhari has been a former Head of State, Brigadier Marwa has governed Lagos for some time and with credibility… so you are national leaders of this country. Even though, by accident of birth, you are from the North, so you can be born anywhere, may be next time when I am coming to the world I will be born in the North or the South South.’
He attributed the manner inwhich frayed nerves calmedto the level-headedness of the late governor, thus preventing what could haveled to another civil war.
