norrisman: Moronic Nigerians. The grounding of the airline was a precautionary measure whilst investigations into the June 3 crash were ongoing. Now the airline has been given a clean bill of health, I see no reason why one shouldnt fly with DANA. If everyone switched airlines after a crash no major airline will exist today as every one of them has had major crashes in their history. If you like fly Sosoliso that's your own palaver |

They remained defiant even as they faced the formidable group of media reporters and an equally stern looking formation of armed police personnel. One of them, Promise Okafor, who claimed to be a lawyer insisted he was innocent. Another, the only female member of the suspected group of exotic car snatchers, Amarachi Ene kept insisting she was also innocent. She claimed being drawn into the gang by a ‘boyfriend’ who is unfortunately now at large. Only the leader of the group, Chimezie Emanere owned up to committing the crime. Even at that he refused the ignoble title of ‘gang leader’ and insisted he only supplied members of the group with master keys which they utilised in starting the cars they earmarked for stealing. But commissioner of police, CP Shinaba Aderenle emphasised that the arrested gang was responsible for series of crimes in and around Abuja and specialised in stealing exotic cars. He also added that they were arrested after months of intensive investigative operations that took its toll on police personnel and resources. He, however, added investigations were still on to determine the different levels of involvement in the crimes and the arrest of other members of the group believed to be at large. “Their arrest was as a result of months of investigations. It was made possible in the course of investigations into a particular robbery operation on the 11th of August. Thereafter a team of our anti-robbery swung into action and arrested these suspects. We believe there are still others at large and investigations are ongoing. We are investigating the assertion by one of them named Promise that he is a lawyer with a view to knowing if it is true or not. We want to make it clear by this arrests that the FCT is set to make the city inhospitable for criminals or their cohorts. It is either they amend their ways of leave the city,’ Shinaba said. Promise Okafor, the suspect claiming to be a lawyer, insisted he is a lawyer by training with a degree from one of the South eastern universities. He also said he was called to the bar in 2001. He refused to give further details. Some of the cars recovered from the suspects include Honda CRV Jeep (AL 99 BNY), Toyota Camry (BP 433 BRC) Infinity Jeep (SN 695 KJA), Toyota Hilux (SMK 680AE), Toyota Prado Jeep (BQ 406 YAB), Toyota Corolla (MUS 598 AP) and three Toyota Camry models without plates numbers. A Honda Academy (AE 324 RBC), Ford Escape Jeep (no plate), Nissan Sunny (BM 792 FKJ) and Golf (FE 537 KRD) were also recovered. In addition to these were Three AK-47 guns and ammunitions allegedly recovered from them during the police operation. The female suspect, Amarachi Ene from Anambra State told reporters that she was lured into the gang by a lover, Charles, who is now at large. She urged the police to help her locate the friend so that she could be vindicated. Also paraded were another car snatching gang members, Paul Egwu, Samuel Chukwu, Nnamdi Umeh, Ifeanyi Udoh and Aliyu Ali caught with master keys they used to pilfer vehicles. Seven luxury cars were also recovered from them: Honda accord with no plate number, Honda academy (NJ 338 AJ), Nissan sunny (LQ 546 AAA), Honda academy (AW 804 KMS), a Honda civic vehicle, a Totota Camry and a Golf car. The police said investigation continues while all the suspects would soon be charged to court. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/09/lawyer-among-car-snatchers-arrested-in.html |

Ritualists may have taken overOgere, Ogun State, on Lagos-Sagamu expressway as a female victim on her way to Lagos from Port Harcourt was kidnapped and taken away at gun point for slaughter. Her fresh corpse was later found close to the point where she was kidnapped two weeks later, with vital organs of her body, including tongue, bre.asts and clito.ris missing and Vanguard gathered that this is the second of such incident occurring in the area in three weeks The victim, Miss Tonia Ibelefa, 25, was travelling in company of two male relations in a private car when the incident occurred. Eyewitness told Vanguard that the armed ritualists blocked the expressway, dragged the University of Port Harcourt graduate out of the car and took her into the bush, adding that the two male family members with the girl surrendered her at gun point. “She is the one we want and you must surrender her,” the ritualists told the two men, according to the witness. The witness said the matter was immediately reported to the police in the area who launched a manhunt for the criminals to no avail. Messages were also said to have been sent to the girl’s family in Port Harcourt who also reported the case to the police who immediately declared a case of missing person. Thinking that it was a case of kidnap, the family waited to hear from the abductors but got no information about her whereabout. However, the ritualists last Thursday called the parents through the number obtained from their victim’s phone, advising them to pick up the corpse of their daughter at a junction very close to where the incident happened. Elder sister of the deceased confirmed that that family had since recovered the corpse, which still looked very fresh at the time of recovery, giving an indication that she was not killed immediately she was kidnapped. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/09/ritualists-kidnap-girl-remove-tongue-breasts-clitoris/ |

Tragedy was yesterday avertedat the Bonny Cantonment gate, near Ozumba Mbadiwe Street on Victoria, Lagos as a riot policeman, said to be on illegal duty, allegedly turned his rifle against a soldier, wounding himseverely. Saturday Sun gathered that the riot policeman, who is attached to Ladipo Police Division, was escorting a civilian, whose identity could not be ascertained as at press time, when the incident occurred. The police personnel, identified as Corporal Wedu Abau, with service number: SHC NO: 341012, it was gathered, was armed with AK 46 rifle, with three magazines loaded with 81rounds of ammunition, opened fire on the soldier following a minor argument. Witnesses said the soldier, identified only as Lance Corporal Mallam, and residing inside the Bonny Cantonment, was returning to the cantonment in an army ambulance when he was caughtup in the tragedy. It was further gathered that the soldier, who was in company with his colleagues, was comingfrom the cemetery, where they had gone to bury a fellow soldier who died on Friday night. The eyewitness said that the soldier had alighted from the ambulance to control the traffic, to enable a Brigadier General to gain access to the barracks, but was shot in the process. According to the witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity: “An argument ensued between the soldier andthe policeman. “All I saw was that the policeman alighted from the blue Toyota Corolla car in whichhe was riding, with registration number: Lagos EF 20 EKY, and told the soldier that he was going to shoot him. “In a split second, he cocked the rifle and shot him twice in his left leg.” Saturday Sun learnt that the policeman attempted to escape, but the quick intervention of soldiers at the cantonment gate prevented him from doing so. The policeman was thoroughly beaten before he was rescued by other Army personnel, who took him to the Medical Resettlement Centre (MRS) in Bonny Cantonment for treatment. Meanwhile, the wounded soldier has been admitted at the Military Hospital, Lagos, where surgeons are battling to save his life. When contacted, the Assistant Director, 81 Division, Lt. Col. The 35 secondary school pupils who participated in the Exposure Robotics Challenge competition at the Grange School, Ikeja last Saturday will forever be grateful to their mentors, seven Nigerian students studying at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States for turning them into computer whiz kids. Five weeks ago, the pupils, drawn from public and private secondary schools across Nigeria and Ghana, did not even know how to use the computer. But last Saturday, they had to use the programs they wrote to control robots they built to carry out specific tasks in four stages of the competition. The pupils were divided into 12 teams of three for the robotic contest which had the ordinary, amateur, tournament and championship stages. In the first stage, the teams had to use the computer programs to operate the robots to transport stationary balls to a designated location and return to their bases. They were given six minutes to complete the task. At the end of the first stage, four teams lost out, leaving eight of them to proceed to the amateur stage, which was more challenging than the previous stage. Fourteams qualified from that stage for the semi-final challenge (tournament stage). Team BEM's robot moved three balls to designated location and returned to its initial position within two minutes of the semi-final contest, leaving VIA team's robot moving without direction. At the end of the challenge, BEM and Android qualified for the championship stage which was the final lap. However, Androidteam, made up of Ben Akuagbonwu, SSS 2 pupil of Okogwu Memorial Grammar School, Nnewi, Jemimah Osunde, SSS 3 pupil of Holy Child College, Lagos and Alex Agadaga, SSS 2 pupil of Belary Schools, Bayelsa State, won the contest. They were rewarded with new Compaq laptops, medals and plaques by sponsors, Shell Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Interswitch Limited andFirst Bank of Nigeria. A member of the winning team, Jemimah, said the task seemed unachievable when she arrived for the challenge. "It was tasking because I felt how could coded computer program move a physicalobject not to talk of something we built ourselves? When we started, I was convinced that it would work and now, myteam wins the challenge," she said, adding that she would improve on the skills she acquired from the programme. Speaking at the event, the Operation Readiness and Assurance Manager of SPDC, Mr Okay Onuoha, who represented the Managing Director of the Multinational, commended the MIT students for their foresight, describing them as Nigeria's shining light. He said SPDC sponsored the competition to support technology-driven education in Nigeria. "It is instructive to note that all the pupils that participated in the contest could not use computer prior to the programme. But after about five weeks of training, we can all see that they all have written different computer programs to control the robots they built. This is the kind of education we at the Shell want to give Nigerian students and we are glad that we are part of this programme," Onuoha said. "The skills the pupils learned from operating the robots could be used to solve problems in Nigeria's economy, politics and technology," said Babafemi Ogungbamila, Divisional Head, Techquest,Interswitch, who spoke on behalf of the company's MD, Mitchell Elegbe. He advised the pupils not to underestimate their potentials, urging them to further develop their newly-acquired skills. The organisers said the contest could signal a new beginning for Nigeria's education system, "which is seen as cycleof memorisation and regurgitation." The team leader, Obinna Ukwuani, said the group wants to prove that education is not all about making good results. He said: "We are group of students who believe education should be more than grades. Exposure Robotic Challenge (XRL)seeks to drive technical and practical education in Nigeria. The progress the pupils made in five weeks of learning programming, mechanics and problem solving would prove our hypothesis in the long run." He added that Nigeria education system must be reformed to allow students to apply the theory they learn in class to solve practical problem, saying it was the only way Nigerian students could favorably compete with their peers acrossthe world. Other members of the XRL are: Obinna Ozwodu, Onyinyechi Okeke, Joseph Aboki,Philip Abel, Tobi Amos and KaosisochukwuUzokwe. Mayowa Adegeye and John Itebu, both students of University of Ibadan, acted as teaching assistants. FirstBank was represented by Mrs Bernadine Okeke at the event. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/education/58745-mit-students-turn-pupils-into-039-whiz-kids-039.html
