Justice Yetunde Idowu of the Ikeja High Court,  Thursday, has asked the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA,  to pay Nigerian comedy actor, Babatunde Omidina, commonly called Baba Suwe, N25 million  as compensation for unlawful detention and breach of right.

Baba Suwe who was granted bail November 4, had gone to court to seek redress over an alleged suspicion of ingesting substances believed to be hard drug and detention in the custody of NDLEA for 24 days.

Justice Yetunde Idowu also asked the NDLEA publicly apologies through two national dailies within 21 days for unlawful detention and breach of right of the comedian, Baba Suwe.

AdvertsInvestment Company To Fund Your Business Idea: (limit Of 1m) by Grassroot(op): 2:11am On Nov 19, 2011
I'm writing on behalf of some friends, we are trying to raise an investment company.
Here is the deal. We can fund your business idea if it is convincing enough. In addition, we can give you the opportunity to run it, but under our supervision. The constraints are:

- you should be able to run the business idea with less than 1M. Of course, we'll select those with better profits and better guarantees.
- for ease of management, we want it based in Abuja (this is because we live and work in Abuja, so we might have to do some routine checks)
- the business idea should be simple. We have a bias towards IT investments, since that's our expertise. (other businesses can be funded too if we can understand it)
- you should be willing to run the business (we will have to set up a meeting to discuss and agree on compensations).
- send all proposals as attachment (in pdf or word; including the CV(s) of the facilitator(s)) to proposals@zenithedge.com

Although we strongly encourage you to send details of your proposals, you can send a summary if it contains some very valuable information. In general, all proposals should contain a scope, cost estimate, how you intend to run it, projected profits and expected compensations(periodic, like monthly, 3 months, etc), human resource requirements, and any other details that you think we should know (like your background, CV, partners, etc). If the idea appeals to us, we can call for a face to face meeting to discuss how to proceed. All proposals should be sent to proposals@zenithedge.com (we'll close this email as soon as we get the right proposals). For a start, we are willing to fund at least 3 businesses.

We'll prefer proposals that can be started as soon as January 2012.

IMO, the brightest students go to federal universities. In most cases, state universities are second choices. That was the case in my time. Everyone wants to attend UI, Uniben, Unilag, FUTA, FUTO, leaving schools like AAU, LAUTECH, as second choices. I'm not saying students in SUs are dull, the best students just prefer federal schools. Maybe you can add quality of teaching to that, but its bad everywhere anyway.

IN apparent response to calls for amnesty for the deadly Boko Haram, President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, stated that government was prepared to reintegrate and rehabilitate those who took arms against the state provided they lay down their arms.

The President who renewed earlier calls on those who chose to live on the fringes of the law to retrace their steps as government is prepared to work with them to facilitate their reintegration and rehabilitation, however, warned that they should also be prepared to face the wrath of the state should they fail to lay down their arms.

Well of course. They probably granted her tenure so as not to lose her to a higher bidder another University. She is an Achebe after all.
but 39 isn't all that young. that's basically 40. still a bit young for your average tenured professor though.
Please do not undermine her achievement. She was given a FULL professor position and not a tenured position. She must have been granted tenure a long time ago. Being a professor at 39 is very young, also considering the discipline. So she has done very well, and she didnt buy it or its not politically related like in some Nigerian universities.

@OP, Congratulations. Like most persons have told you, it depends on your personal bias. From your story, you are smart and I believe you would do well in any path you decide to take. The fact that you applied for PhD positions shows that you have a likeness for academics. In your shoes, I'll go for that. IMO, academiccs/research is a good career and at the same time you have the opportunity to nurture young ones. The truth is it is persons like you that we need in our educational instutions. And if its any motivation, you can make more impact and get more recognition in research/academics (I think). Wish you the best bro, and please dont forget to keep us updated on how it turns out. Your experience might be helpful for those that come after.

99% truth + 1% poison is still poison. Your summaries are biased and misleading but worst of all  FALSE.
@quest55, in what ways are my summaries biased and false? I challenge you to proove that. JWs belong to a very closed religious group. If as a JW, you discover something in the bible that does not conform to the society's teachings, can you challenge what they teach? Can you apply independent thought without considering the society's teachings? Or are you telling me that all their teachings are correct? I dont want to debate this. Just tell me where I am wrong::::

Grassroot:
Belief is a very powerful force, and if you choose to join any religion, the best approach is to completely believe -- close your mind. Only that way can you find relative happiness. Because, if you continue to search for this truth by seeking peoples opinions, you would end up in total confusion because everyone has a personal concept of truth. This is what JW help you do. They give you logical explanations of the bible, call it truth, and ask you to shun whatever. To be sincere, you would be very happy if you are able to accept this. As a JW, you would be confined to their teachings and you are not "scripturally permitted" to consider other beliefs. If you dont have that kind of mind, I mean if are "humble" enought to receive instructions from the society without questioning, you would be happy as a JW. As a JW, even if you question, you must do it within the confines of the society's teachings, or you risk being disfellowshipped.

I'll advise you to read the books: Crisis of Conscience and A Search for Religious Freedom. IMO, they would give you objective history abt JW. If after reading, you are willing to continue. You would be very happy as a JW. I must warn you because they might be dangerous books. I doubt if any true JW can read such books since they are classified as apostate doctrines. But if you are a true seeker of truth, you would want to know about the history of what u consider truth. Reading them will give you two sides to the story and you can make your choice. I'll restate it in clear terms, the moment you agree to be a JW, you close your mind to all other teachings. Have you ever wondered why JWs cant attend other churches? (they can be banned for this act). And if you decide to leave, you risk your happiness with guilt that many cannot recover from.

That said, JW are fine people and they are "cleaner" than most other churches. I dont think they are perfect.

cap28:
western international banking corporations like the world bank and IMF  loan money to third world countries to enable them carry out multi million dollar infrastructure projects - the only problem is the loans come with various conditions attached eg: devaluation of your currency, privatisation of govt owned companies which are then sold to foreign investors at grossly reduced prices, the loans also come with massive interest rates which always go up never down so that borrowers sometimes never repay what they borrowed in the first place - this is known as debt slavery or debt peonage - which is a cunning way of keeping african economies enslaved economically.  Nigeria is currently adhering to the conditions of the various loans they borrowed many years ago - loans which they repaid ten times over - there is no way out of this mess apart from refusing to honour these conditions - this is why okonjo iweala was sent in by the US to ensure that nigeria implements the conditions that they signed up to when they borrowed all those loans - she is a stooge and traitor.
I understand your points. The loans had conditions attached. The government should be faithful enough to take responsibility for the commitments they've made in the past. If only they used the loans for the development projects, the suffering would have been reduced and we wont be having this discussion today. That said, I'm still not convinced that she is a traitor or a stooge. Her integrity has never been questioned, so let us give her the benefit of doubt. I want to assume that she understands the implications of her economic policies. Its our leaders (especially the past ones) that are traitors. They are the ones that have enslaved Nigeria to the west long time ago. I think Nigeria is rich enough to sustain itself. Looking at it from the economic perspective, removal of oil subsidy is a good policy. Even the US called for it. Of course, we cant be compared to the US. Maybe the timing is the problem. Like @tobiecxs said, its between the devil and the deep blue sea.

tobiecxs:
Subsidising the petroleum sector is not in any way beneficial to the growth of the economy, subsidy is only a means of masking our problems; like feeding from hand to mouth. Subsidy may be beneficial only if there are functional domestic refineries that are being protected from international competition. Where is the sense in subsidising imported petroleum?
Subsidy also prevents foreign direct investment in the subsidised sector, except you expect the goverment to subsidise a foreign company.
Nonetheless, subsidy appears to enhance a more effective allocation of resources to households, the removal of subsidy will most likely result into increased corruption as the allocation of resources will be tied up with the elite citizenry.
The situation of subsidy removal in Nigeia is a case of being between the devil and the deep ocean. sad
Good luck Nigeria
stagger:
So you want to tell me that companies like Michelin that moved to Ghana did not do their homework, or that me that wants to take my business to where I will not be subject to buying expensive fuel to generate power because my government cannot provide it in order to stop losing business is probably silly, abi?

Or that the Reverend father who owns Songhai farms in Benin Republic is silly for taking his business there when all the banks and governments in Nigeria he approached for funding in 1985 refused him, right?

HMMMM! angry angry angry
@Stagger, I feel your pain. Its sad sometimes to think of how things are run in Nigeria, especially if you are a business man and you are into manufacturing. It is people like you that would be affected more. Benin Republic is heavily dependent on subsistence agriculture and are still one of the very underdeveloped countries in the world. Cotonou is ranked as an extreme hardship location with a hardship index of 40%. Their power is imported from Ghana and Nigeria and their industries are limited to very light manufacturing. Obviously, their development is strongly connected to Nigeria. Although, membership of the CFA franc zone offers reasonable currency stability. Before you move, please reconsider. Nigeria is not so bad as we say it is. I know the conditions are harsh, but Benin Republic is not better naaaaaaaa. Maybe you should move to Ghana instead. But before that, wait and monitor the outlook and see if its really worth moving. I'm also pleading on behalf of your employees. If you and people like you move, the unemployment situation becomes worse. This is your way of helping Nigeria. Please, keep it up (you should be expanding your business in Nigeria). Abeg brossssss

Pls NL b4 your react to any treat, do your home work well. stop abusing people.

Am  a Nigerian  like u guy working in private sector. Have not benefit from any government  either the present or the past one, so am not supporting one, but i want to make the following clear.

- The three refineries are all working at their optimal capacity. I have been to these refineries at least 3 to 4 time in the last 2 months, so the problem is not fixing the refineries, but their out put can not meet with Nigerians consumption rate, that why we are importing. Also remember that we are not a capitalist economy but rather a mixed economy, but the government want to move into a socialist economy, by so doing the private sector will be the major controller of our economy where price will be determine by the force of demand and supply. so it will be the responsibility of the private sector to build the refineries as is done in most socialist economy in the world.

- Secondly i want state here that i support the removal of the subsidy, we should be able to embrace change, every great economy in world pay one price or the other, for instance like China. Just imagine for every liter of fuel we are buying the government is paying  almost 80 naira to the importers, who will not even want our refineries to work so that they can continue to enslave both the government and the masses. So this is what is going to happen at the initial stage, like the coming of gsm, a Sim card was almost sold at 30k while Nokia 3010 was 40k+, but Sim card are almost free, with 27k you can buy the lowest grade of BB, why is this so, because the force of demand and supply are in place. With the subsidy gone the fuel will be sold at 150 naira per liter at the initial stage but with time we will be buying fuel at 18 to 20 naira per liter, the private sector will be force to build refineries to reduce the cost of importation instead hiding under the umbrella of subsidy to make their huge profit . they will be room for competition and the three refineries will be privatise like the case of NI TEL.
igbogolo:
I am still working on the cost of fuel to the pump were crude oil refined and processed in Nigeria. My rough estimate is N43 naira.
My calculations show that we are over paying for fuel by about 50%  even at N65 per litre. So, i am inclined to believe that there is really no subsidy in place in the first instance.

I think petrol is very expensive in Nigeria even as we have no amenities, no social net, nothing.

For those that voted Jonathan and not PDP, please continue to smile and suffer. A man who wants to remove increase fuel prices at this time is simply clueless!
I still dont understand how NOI is a puppet of world bank. How is Nigeria's money going to world bank? (Somebody should tell me). From all I know, Nigeria has had more benefits from WB than WB has had from Nigeria. Practically, she's one of the best economist in the world (I know some will raise their eye brows, but that's a fact). I'm sure she has a good plan for the economy. We just need to be more informed of them. Let's focus on the positives.

For the poster moving to Benin Republic.  grin grin grin Beninhuhhuhhuh?? I want to believe that's a joke. Nigeria is not that bad. Business men in Benin want to move to Nigeria instead. Besides, as a business man, you should know the demerits of doing business in a foreign land, especially when its manufacturing.

Romance60% Of Prostitutes In Italy And Belgium Are Nigerians by Grassroot(op): 8:11am On Oct 19, 2011
Dont know where to post this, I hope this section is appropriate.

Trafficking of under-aged girls from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia is now in the rise, Executive Secretary of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other related Matters (NAPTIP) Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba has said.

She also said that “Available statistics indicate that 60% of the prostitutes in Turin, Italy and Antwerp in Belgium are Nigerian girls.”

Speaking before the House of Representatives committee on Diaspora yesterday, Mrs. Jedy-Agba said her agency has uncovered new route of trafficking under the cover of pilgrimage.

“It appears from the report of our staff who have participated in Hajj operations that there is an increased trafficking activity under the cover of the annual pilgrimage. Traffickers have devised an insidious plan to desecrate the Holy Land of Mecca with trafficked victims,” she said.

The NAPTIP boss said the agency has identified two major trafficking routes – the Lagos-Cotonuo-Moussa- Ouagadougou-Mali route accounts for about 75% of trafficked victims to Europe and the Sokoto-Bori Koni in Niger Republic and Katsina Maradi-Niamey-Agadez-Libya.

She told the committee that there was increase in internal trafficking at the border towns of Calabar, Port Harcourt, Uyo Badagry, Benin, Kebbi, Sokoto and Maiduguri, with about 8million children at the risk of being trafficked.

Reports equally showed that there are large numbers of Nigerian women regularly taken to other West and Central African countries of Gabon, Cameroon, Ghana, Chad, Togo, Benin, Niger, Burkina-Faso and the Gambia for sexual exploitation under the guise of taking them abroad for employment opportunities.

A recent fact finding mission conducted by the agency confirmed the existence of many brothels in Bamako, Mopti, Kayes, Sikasso, Gao, all in Mali populated by young Nigerians between the ages of 14 and 17 years being used as sex slaves,” she said.

Rep Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN, Lagos), who chairs the committee, promised that the National Assembly will look into the possibilities of amending the constitution to ease the process of domesticating international protocol on human trafficking.

A Nigerian accused of trying to bomb a US-bound flight on Christmas Day 2009 is changing his plea to guilty, his lawyer has told his trial in Detroit.

The attorney told the second day of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's trial that the 24-year-old would admit terrorism and other charges.

Mr Abdulmutallab caught fire when a bomb sewn into his underwear failed to detonate fully, prosecutors say.

Nearly 300 people were on the flight to Detroit with Mr Abdulmutallab.

If convicted of the most serious charges, he would face a life sentence.

The former student faces a series of charges, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which is based in Yemen, said it was behind the attack on the Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam on 25 December 2009.

@pato405

i am not making sense because this is the truth.

i will do my PHD.this is not the problem.what i am saying is to tackle the rot in the system.

u are a typical nigerian that likes acquiring big degrees but with empty upstairs.

i tell u that if PHD holders can make use of their research knowledge, then unemployment will be greatly reduced.

instead they take pride in dumping their thesis in a bookshelf and be showing to students.

i can tell u that the only thing a PHD knows very well is to be able to write well.

alot of PHD holders are pursuing me now for me to help them write their PHD thesis application software.

i personally will not aid anyone because if i do this, i will be contributing to the rot in the system.

i respect PHD holders that are in academics and also doing private practice.

how can u explain university churning out PHD holders in computer science who cannot even develop a software to compute results for students.

i bet u go and check any exam officer,u will see him/her using microsoft excel to compute results.some even do manually.

it is a shame!!!
You are really funny. Reading through your post, I can clearly see the difference between a PhD holder and a Master degree holder. Doing a PhD is a highly intellectual training. The kind of skills a PhD holder acquires are analytical and problem solving skills. For example, I don't think a PhD holder would make such comment. You sure know how to write well, but reasoning well is more important.

I happen to know about computer science, and if you plan to do a PhD in computer science, don't think you are going to be learning programming languages. I advise you to pick up your discrete mathematics, formal languages, compilers, algoritms, and all those abstract concepts you have done in the past. Don't expect to be writing php, java, or python. You will be involved in building new programming methodologies instead. So dont think you are better because you can program in 10 languages or use excel to compute results. I seriously doubt your claim that "a lot of PHD holders are pursuing me now for me to help them write their PHD thesis application software." Just wondering where you met a lot of them.

I agree with you saying that if researchers use their knowledge well, then unemployment will reduce drastically. Afterall, projects like Google were offshoots from PhD researches. That said, what we need most are more researchers with genuine interest in research, not because they want to have 2 free days a week or for lack of other juicy jobs. I encourage you to do your PhD, the intellectual experience is worth it. You can see the salaries are not so great, so dont let that be your motive.
