ManiCypher: Major Hamza Al-Mustapha yesterday challenged Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to produce evidence on his claims that President Jonathan interfered with the murder trial of the late General Abacha’s former chief security officer. Al-Mustapha, who is abroad, also denied being used to run an assassination squad to target Jonathan’s political opponents ahead 2015 elections. In his December 2 letter to the President, Obasanjo said Jonathan interfered with the court process to set a murderer free, and organised a presidential reception for him. The former president did not name names, but it was obvious he was referring to Al-Mustapha who was freed by the Court of Appeal in July over the murder of the late Kudirat Abiola. Al-Mustapha’s counsel Barrister Olalekan Ojo yesterday challenged Obasanjo to produce evidence to support his claims. In his 18-page letter to Jonathan, Obasanjo said: “Presidential assistance for a murderer to evade justice and presidential delegation to welcome him home can only be in bad taste generally but particularly to the family of his victim. “Assisting criminals to evade justice cannot be part of the job of the presidency. Or, as it is viewed in some quarters, is he being recruited to do for you what he had done for Abacha in the past? Hopefully, he should have learned his lesson. Let us continue to watch.” In his reaction, Ojo told Daily Trust: “To the best of my knowledge, President Jonathan never organised or sponsored any welcome rally to Al-Mustapha after his release.” Al-Mustapha had been in detention for 14 years before he was acquitted by the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal, after being sentenced to death by a Lagos High Court. Ojo said, “The impression (of Obasanjo’s letter) is that the Court of Appeal caved into pressure from President Jonathan, to that extent, the comment is disturbing, worrisome and unwarranted. “The judiciary should be left alone and not be dragged into politics. The Justices of the Court of Appeal in Lagos that sat over the case are jurists of impeccable character and it is not fair for anybody, no matter how well-placed, to attack the integrity of these judges. We challenge Obasanjo to produce evidence of such interference to make it available to the public.” He added: “My client was discharged and acquitted on the merit of his appeal. Majority of those who commented on the judgment expressed satisfaction. It is most unfortunate that a person like OBJ could accuse the President of using his exalted office for such a sinister and morally reprehensible thing. It must be stated that if OBJ has any issue to settle with the President, he should not drag Al Mustapha into it.” On the allegation that Al-Mustapha is being used by Jonathan to run an assassination squad, Ojo said that the accusation was a demonstration of the enormous hatred Obasanjo harboured for Al-Mustapha. “At no time has he been involved in any such thing. It is totally false. Al- Mustapha is earnestly committed to the promotion of peace and harmony in Nigeria. It is most unfair that such an allegation should be made against him. It is an attempt to give a dog a bad name to hang him. When Al-Mustapha returns (from abroad) he will make a fuller response,” Ojo said. Meanwhile, Obasanjo and Jonathan met yesterday at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, where they had a private breakfast together. This was the first time they are appearing at the same place since Obasanjo’s letter became public on Wednesday. Jonathan and Obasanjo were in Kenya to attend its 50th Independence anniversary which was held yesterday. Immediately after their breakfast, Obasanjo left for the venue of the independence anniversary. No official statement was issued on the meeting. Mind of Nigerians The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) yesterday said Obasanjo’s letter to Jonathan represented the views of Nigerians. ACF spokesman Anthony Sani said: “While it may be indecorous for the former president to leak altercations between him and a sitting president well known to be his political vassal, it is more indecorous for the presidency to resort to uncouth language for replies. “And that is why I plead with the media and the public to concentrate on the issues raised and not on how they have been presented. On the whole, except perhaps the aspect of Mr President arming snipers, the former president has said what most Nigerians know.” Also yesterday, Vice President Atiku Abubakar urged leaders who Obasanjo said he consulted before writing his letter to intervene, to “reduce the tension created by former President Obasanjo’s weighty allegations.” In a statement by his media office, Abubakar said he was nervous about the allegations made by the former President and that those elders mentioned by “Obasanjo had a moral duty to add their voices to the issue.” The statement said “the allegations were too disturbing to be treated with apathy by any political stakeholder like him. (Abubakar) said at a moment of national anxiety or uncertainty, leaders across the country should rise to the occasion and reassure fellow Nigerians about the future.” Abubakar added: “That said, it is on record that I have firmly fought for a democracy where the voters choose their future leaders, not political party bosses. If the incumbent President insists on continuing to destroy his own party with vindictive internal wars and thinks his record of rising youth unemployment, never-ending violence, corruption and scandals is worthy of another term, then he is welcome to run. We are confident Nigerians will exercise their democratic right to choose new leadership in 2015.” Constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, also expressed anxiety over the content of Obasanjo’s letter. On the alleged watch list of 1000 Nigerians and training snipers, Sagay said, “It is a very serious allegations and it could set the whole country on a state of alert and anxiety… the one that even frightens me most is the allegations snipers are being trained in the same school where the Abacha killer squads were trained and there are some Nigerians under political watch list. “That is very frightening because it is not something you expect under a under a civilian democratic regime except under a military dictatorship. So, it is very frightening and I am very unsettled about it particularly given what happened to Prof. Iyayi whose cause of death has not yet been resolved. It is very, very disturbing.” Also, senior lawyer Femi Falana urged the Presidency not to dismiss Obasanjo’s allegations. “Instead of dismissing the contents of the letter the Presidency should respond to the allegations raised therein seriatim. In particular, the allegation that the Federal Government is setting up a Presidential Strike Force to carry out terrorist attacks on political opponents should not be swept under the carpet,” he said in a statement yesterday. But Falana said Obasanjo was also guilty of the kind of offiences he accused Jonathan of, including condoning corruption, ethnic politics and insincerity in covening a national conference. Also speaking, Chief Ladi Rotimi- Williams urged Jonathan to take the corrections offered by Obasanjo in good faith and act fast to prevent the nation from drifting further. “The President will be doing a great disservice to himself if he considers the content of the letter as insultive rather than taking appropriate action on the issue discussed,” he said. Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja branch, Mr. Monday Ubani, said Obasanjo’s allegations were grievous. “And if those allegations are true, then something needs to be done very fast in order to nip all those things in the bud. “Clearly, Nigeria is on the verge of liquidation and if you place over 1,000 people on watch list and you are going to use snipers to eliminate them as the President of the country, then that is very grave for this country,” he said. Former Lagos State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, said the letter was quite “timely and appropriate.” Tsav, who spoke in Makurdi, urged the National Assembly to commence impeachment process against the president. “The letter by Obj is timely and appropriate considering the deterioration of the quality of governance in the country and astronomical rise in corruption and the enhancement of the culture of impunity,” he said. “It is not malicious, self serving or hypocritical. Obasanjo has spoken the truth. He brought in Jonathan and has the right to advice and correct him if he veers off the path of honour as he is now doing.” by the Court of Appeal in July over the murder of the late Kudirat Abiola. Another fear am nursing is that how are we sure that most important places in the country have not been rigged with sophisticated bombs? On many occasions we heard of containers of arms and ammunition being impounded. Where are they? Kano and kaduna are military stronghold of the country, specifically military stronghold of the North, but with incessant bombardment of the military facilities at both states by purported boko Haram I don’t think they are as strong as ever to withstand possible militant attacks in future. The $50b diverted could be part of monies for arms and ammunition acquisition. If things remain like this till this time next year, well, start praying to your God for advance protection. |
Activists, lawyers and others have likened former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s letter bombing President Goodluck Jonathan as that of a pot calling kettle black, saying the former leader is guilty of the same offence. Obasanjo had in an 18-page letter accused Jonathan of plunging the nation into darkness. He accused President Jonathan, among others, of promoting corruption, ethnicity; having a killer squad; tackling Boko Haram with kid gloves and aspiring for a second term in office when he said he will only run for a single term. Reacting to Obasanjo’s letter, National Publicity Secretary, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said Obasanjo was as guilty as Jonathan as he did worst things than President Jonathan when he was in power. “Nigerians should be weary of Obasanjo whenever he said something; it is either he is trying to settle scores, even though Jonathan is facing challenges,” he said. Odumakin urged Nigerians not to allow Obasanjo to deceive them with his frank talks as whatever he did “is self-serving but that does not mean Jonathan should not address corruption.” Convener, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, Comrade Debo Adeniran said Obasanjo’s letter is like that of a pot calling kettle black. “It is unfortunate that it is now that Obasanjo sees the fight against corruption as waning. In his days, he frustrated the fight against corruption. “The ICPC under Obasanjo was underfunded. The EFCC under him was used to suppress the voice of political enemies. Obasanjo came to power with less than N20,000 and left power as a multi-billionaire,” he said. According to him, “Obasanjo has no moral right to criticise Jonathan even though things are bad with this government. He should keep quiet and allow people with integrity to talk.” A member of the House of Representatives, Lanre Odubote said Obasanjo is not different from Jonathan as the former president promoted the culture of lawlessness and impunity. “They are birds of the same feather. He is only talking now because he has misunderstanding with the president but this is good for our democracy,” he stated. Activist, Bamidele Aturu described Obasanjo’s letter to Jonathan as damning, saying what the former president had revealed was what Nigerians already knew. “The letter shows there is a big crisis now and it is time for Nigerians to act to change this government. This is not a matter of pot calling kettle black, they are all black. What they are saying is that they cannot deliver. “Obasanjo made valid points in his letter to Jonathan. These people are incapable of governing this nation. Our president is now dishonourable, corruption is high and it is time to purge the system,” he said. Prof. Lakin Akintola, Director, Muslim Rights Concern said Obasanjo’s letter to Jonathan was a little belated. “Jonathan is highly disturbing and has contradictory character. He made promises and will not fulfil and it is better they call him to order. “He renerged on agreement to run for only one term. Jonathan is misleading the PDP. For five governors to defect from a party, that has never happened. 2015 may not be what it should be,” he stated. A civil society activist, Biodun Sowunmi, said the letter showed that it had reached the point where people within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have become frustrated about the style of the President they installed in the country. “With the unprecendented level of corruption, even Obasanjo, a sinner, knows that a greater sinner is in power. Obasanjo is worried that Jonathan is bleeding the country to death. “The government has suddenly become inept and rudderless and this should make people like Obasanjo worried even though he shares from the blame of forcing Jonathan on us,” he said. The content of the letter, according to him, is a summary of the frustrations among Nigerians conveyed by just one person. A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Ipoola Omisore, said Obasanjo only expressed his frustrations in the letter to Jonathan. “Obasanjo has no moral right to condemn Jonathan. Jonathan was a docile Deputy Governor in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, when Obasanjo used him to displace the then Governor Dipreye Alamieyeseigha and also used him to defeat Atiku by pairing him with the late Umaru Yar’Adua against the PDP’s choice of Donald Duke and Peter Odili. “You remember this same Obasanjo backed Shagari against Obafemi Awolowo. He has been giving us presidents we do not want and the result is what Nigeria has become today,” he said. Omisore further stressed that every sin he accused Jonathan of committing, he also committed during his era as President. “During Obasanjo’s time, he never forgave anybody, he played god, he wanted third term, he seized federal allocation to Lagos, he used the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against his perceived enemies and many more,” Omisore said, adding that he did what he did because he witnessed the recent encomiums poured on late Nelson Mandela of South Africa. “If Nigeria should collapse today, Obasanjo should be blamed. I just pray he quit politics quickly and repent so that he does not pay for his sins,” Omisore said. Another lawmaker, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, said the PDP can no longer hide the fact that there are serious crises within the party threatening to devour it. NBA Chairman, Ikeja Branch, Barr. Onyekachi Ubani, in his own comment stated: “ Obasanjo cannot be exonerated from the problem at hand because he was the person that forced President Goodluck Jonathan on Nigerians. But he must be commended for coming out with this at this time. The allegations and level of corruption contained in that letter are what people like us already knew. Every Nigerian knows that this government is monumentally corrupt, but for someone like Obasanjo who is a member of the same political party with the president to come into the open with this allegation clearly justifies what everybody has always known. I must say that the allegations he made are very grievous and must not be swept aside. The information in the letter must be used to nip the destruction of this country in the bud.” —Kazeem Ugbodaga |

An electronic dealer at Alaba International market, Lagos State, Darlington Oleunne, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for attempting to export 450 grammes of methamphetamine to Malaysia. Oleunne, who was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International, Airport, Ikeja, was said to have ingested the drugs. NDLEA Lagos Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, who confirmed the arrest, said, “The scanning machine revealed that the suspect ingested drugs during screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight to Malaysia. During observation, Oleunne excreted 450 grammes of substance that tested positive to methamphetamine.” Oleunne, however, said, “I was assured that I could make a profit of N5m if I invested N900,000. It was a trial business for me because it is my first time. I also did it because of financial predicament.” Chairman of the NDLEA, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, called for stiffer punishment for drug traffickers. He said, “Stiffer punishment would help in reducing cases of drug production and trafficking. We shall prevent drug traffickers from using the country as a transit point for their illicit business. It is sad that a businessman will prefer to invest in criminality when there are countless legitimate businesses. “I am glad that Oleunne was arrested in Nigeria because of the capital punishment for drug trafficking in Malaysia. His arrest abroad would have added to the number of Nigerian drug convicts in foreign prisons.” http://www.punchng.com/metro/alaba-trader-caught-with-459g-drug/ |

Obasanjo we all know Obasanjo regime as a leader and head of government can best be characterized as catastrophic failure. The 8 years he served as Nigeria’s civilian President were nightmarish and can best be described as “government of the leaving dead” - using a borrowed statement from David Cameron (UK Conservative Party leader) while referring to the remaining last seven weeks of government of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the UK Labour Party leader who will step down as British Prime Minister on June 27, 2007. Why did this happen and how will the future remember President Chief Obasanjo? Inordinate and blind ambition and greed – these few words can best be used to answer the above question. However, a deep analysis can explain clearly how and why this happened. First, it is not the length of time in office which matters but what he did and did not do in office during his 8 years tenure. Secondly, the quality and integrity in terms of accountability and transparency of what he did and the vision and maturity exhibited while providing leadership of the country counts in any assessment of his legacy. Having said that, it is pertinent also to briefly examine the political history of Nigeria since independence to buttress some points here. For example, it is a known fact that once in office the first thing Nigerian leaders do is to whittle down drastically, the constitutional powers and authority assigned to the other tiers and layers of governance of the country. When the military is in power for instance, the first thing they do is to disband the parliament or National and State Assemblies and constrain the judicial arm of government while assuming supreme executive authority over everyone else. Similarly, under Nigeria’s democratic experimentations since 1979, the executive arms of government both at the federal and state levels try as much as they can, to have domineering influence on the legislative and judicial arms of government. For example, from 1999 to 2007, almost all the State Governors exercised power and authority in their respective domains with very minimal oversight by the legislative arm of government. At the federal level, the story is even worst. The reality is that what Nigeria went through during the 8 years of President Obasanjo’s supposedly democratic government was not fundamentally different from what Nigerians experienced during the over 35 years of military dictatorship in Nigeria since independence in 1960. The national assembly was treated with disdain by President Obasanjo and his cohorts. This is one of the reasons why we found ourselves in the present mess where for example, President Obasanjo can tyrannically. stripped Nigerians of their hard earned civil liberties; democratic rights to freely elect their leaders and unleashed the worst form of excruciating and awful economic and social reforms in Nigeria since independence. By the way how can we run our country when we can’t even conduct credible elections? Therefore, the best starting point of assessment of President Obasanjo’s legacy is the April 2007 “charade” in the name of general elections. No matter how one would like to put the blames for what a shambles that elections were on April 14, 2007 and April 21, 2007 respectively, the Presidency must be blamed squarely for shabby preparations, conduct and the outcomes of the elections. But should we be surprised? Of course not – it was continuing in the tradition of Nigeria’s previous elections set by our greedy and dishonest politicians and inept leaders. However people interprets the results of the shambled elections, it is clear that overwhelming Nigerians and the international observer groups have condemned the elections as severely flawed and do not meet the standards of acceptability anywhere in the democratic world and traditions. Nevertheless, President Obasanjo and his cohorts are hell-bent on forcing the results of the charade on Nigerians. This has already opened the doors for protracted opposition against the in-coming governments both at the States and federal levels. But any attempt by the out-going and/ or incoming administrations to go against the wishes of the majority of Nigerians will be met with strong resistance from the opposition groups. Therefore, the April 2007 general elections (presently disputed in election petition tribunals nationwide) are President Obasanjo’s lowest point of the legacy he bequests to Nigeria. The first positive legacy of Obasanjo’s 8 years that stands above all others, not begrudge even by Obasanjo’s fiercest critics is largely paying off our sovereign debts to the Paris and London Clubs of creditor nations. This singular act was achieved largely by the political will Obasanjo provided to his economic team led by the indefatigable World Bank Vice President whom Obasanjo convinced to relinquished her cosy prime position in Washington, D.C USA to join his cabinet as finance and later foreign minister – Mrs Ngoji Okonjo-Iweala. This showed the highest point and the very best of President Obasanjo’s legacy of 8 years of Nigeria’s leadership. In between the above mentioned lowest and highest points of Obasanjo’s legacies are to be found other areas of achievements and failures as the case may be. However, within this spectrum, there seems to be more failures than achievements. For example, some other major achievements and failures are highlighted and summarized in the table below. |

Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has presented a budget estimate of N93,287,000,000 for the 2014 fiscal year to the state House of Assembly.
