Politics › Curfew On Christmas Day Shows El-rufai’s Bias – SOKAPU by gratiaeo(op): 9:42pm On Dec 24, 2016
The National Youth Wing of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, SOKAPU, has accused Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai of bias for imposing curfew in three local government areas on Christmas day.

The group maintained that ‎for the governor to insist on enforcing curfew right in the midst of the celebration of Christmas simply showed his biased mind and acute insensitivity to the feelings of people of Southern Kaduna.

In a statement signed by Nasiru Jagaba, SOKAPU Youth Coordinator, the group said “Governoe El-Rufai insisted that he will continue to pay herdsmen who have been killing and terrorizing people in Southern Kaduna, but has he deemed it fit to pay a single person in Southern Kaduna who has been killed by his kinsmen?

“How can a governor of a sensitive state like Kaduna open his mouth to allege that the protest in Kafanchan was planned in a church? Where do the herdsmen sit and plan theirs – government House?”

“El-rufai claimed that men of Southern Kaduna cowardly sent their women to protest instead of them but the governor has also cowardly flooded Southern Kaduna with security to arrest curfew breakers instead of sending them to go and arrest the killers of our people,” the statement explained.

SOKAPU said it was height of ‘cowardice’ for a governor to instigate the security men to arrest those who were trying to defend themselves rather than arresting those who have been killings them.

“Suddenly, Jema’a, Zangon Kataf and Kaura local governments have been flooded with security men, why were they not brought earlier to defend the people of southern Kaduna?

“Since emerging as the governor of Kaduna state, El-Rufai just couldn’t hide his raw contempt for the people of Southern Kaduna. Because for the first time, this flagrant discrimination bears no surprise as same El-Rufai once said on national- Channels TV during the Kad-Invest program that Kaduna state has a 70/30 percent of Moslems-Christians ratio.

“The Governor lied when he alleged that Southern Kaduna parents indoctrinate their children to hate Muslim rulers, but what he is currently doing and saying is worse than creating division in Kaduna state.

“He is deliberately fanning the embers of an ethno-religious crisis in Kaduna state. He has been the worst thing that has happened to Kaduna state in terms of statesmanship.

“His insistence that the killings in Southern Kaduna were a reprisal is the worst of all lies ever uttered by a governor. There was no record of any foreign Fulani killed in 2011.

“Come to think of it, how did Southern Kaduna become the meeting points of herdsmen from 14 different countries? The 24-hour curfew slammed on these three local governments isn’t anything but a punitive action.

“How did Zangon Kataf local government even get included? What did they do? Since the governor said the 24-hour curfew was due to credible security report of the possibility of a further breakdown of order, why didn’t the security also get credible report of impending attacks on our villages all these while?

“The Governor is aggrieved, nay, very angry that our people are rising up to defend themselves against those who have been attacking them at night.

“No one in his/her right senses will sit by docilely while criminals kill him and his family. That will be tantamount to committing suicide. No! So, Mr. Governor, since you have given compensation to your brothers the Southern Kaduna people will not sit down and allow themselves to be killed by your brothers.

“No amount of threats of arrest will stop our people from defending themselves against murderers and arsonists. If the Governor doesn’t want us to defend ourselves, then he should do the needful,” the statement noted.

Politics › Re: 2017 Budget’ll End Nigeria’s Economic Woes – Buhari by gratiaeo(m): 8:08am On Dec 12, 2016
DAVECENA:
ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari last night expressed optimism that the proposed 2017 budget would not end the current economic recession facing Nigeria but would also shoot the country into economic prosperity.
He also enjoined Nigerians not to be deterred by the reality of the “temporary challenges” but should be strengthened by them.
The encouragement were the highlights of the president’s address to Nigerians on the occasion of 2016 Eid-el-maulud celebrations today.
Meanwhile, the president who wished Nigerians especially muslims a happy Eid-el-maulud celebration is billed to lay the budget estimates before a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday.
The address read in full: “Dear Compatriots, again the calendar of life has brought us into another period of celebration, and deep reflection. Celebration, because we are marking the birth of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him), and deep reflection, because it is another opportunity of pausing, taking a deep breath and reflecting on the current realities before us.
“First of all, I wish all Muslims a happy and memorable celebration of the birth of the great Prophet, through whose teachings, particularly on peaceful living, tolerance, sobriety, generosity, sacrifice and honesty, and wisdom, the nation has gained immensely in building a harmonious and prosperous society.
“The universal truths of the Prophet’s values remain unchanged.
“Against all odds, we have used these pillars of strength in securing a just and fair society, and our efforts are beginning to yield dividends in curbing terrorism, corruption and other crimes that devalue our humanity.
“The reality of the temporary challenges should not undermine our hope, reverse our collective will to succeed, or divide us; rather it should remind us of why we need to stay together, fight together and succeed together.
“As we look forward to 2017 with hope and huge expectations, let me assure you that with collective dedication and hard work, we will overcome the mountain of economic difficulties, and return our country to the path of prosperity.”

Politics › Man Arrested For Smuggling Rice As Dead Bodies by gratiaeo(op): 6:59am On Sep 02, 2016
By Isaac Anumihe

The ban on rice importation and biting economic conditions are forcing daring smugglers to freight bags of rice as coffins carried in ambulances.
This unprecedented antic of moving rice in an ambulance under the guise of corpses from Benin Republic into Nigeria was uncovered yesterday at the Seme Border by the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) who promptly arrested the vendor.
According to Customs officials at Seme Border, the suspected smuggler, Moses Degbogbahun, arranged 11 50kg bags of rice in place of a corpse in his Volvo ambulance with Lagos registration number DV 74EKY. Luck, however, ran out on him when he was subjected to a rigorous search by an officer who had observed him move “corpses” across the border regularly without being searched.
His frequent movement across the border made the officers at Aradagun area of Badagry to suspect foul play prompting them to insist on seeing the “corpse”. But they were, however, amazed to see that they had allowed so many “corpses” across the border without knowing the identities of the dead (rice).
The Customs mobile patrol team leader stated that the frequency of the said ambulance patronising the international route with the “dead bodies” had become alarming making it necessary to ascertain the identity of the dead.
Rice smuggling across Seme Border became a lucrative trade to warrant such antic when the Federal Government banned rice importation into the country in its attempt to boost local capacity.
Meanwhile, over 50 million bags of imported rice, worth over N1 billion, are currently trapped in various warehouses in Cotonou, Benin Republic, following the ban on foreign rice import into Nigeria.
Many importers who violated the import restrictions by government are now regretting because they can no longer push the imported commodities into Nigerian markets.
One of the importers told Daily Sun that many of them have lost their collaterals to banks because they cannot service their loans.
“We have lost a lot. The banks are not giving us breathing space. They have confiscated all our belongings,” he said.
Daily Sun’s checks revealed that the new Controller General of Customs (CGC), Colonel Hameed Ali, had threatened to discipline the Customs Area Controller in charge of Seme Border, Victor Dimka, if any grain of imported rice finds its way into the Nigerian market.
To demonstrate his seriousness, Ali, three weeks ago, signed an agreement with the Beninoise government to the effect that any ship from Benin ports must be escorted by the Benin Customs and handed over to Nigerian Customs. He threatened to stop trade relations with Benin Republic if the government continues to allow contraband goods into Nigerian markets.
This tough stance by the Nigerian government had pitted the importers against their bankers because most of them borrowed to import the goods. They had targeted the ‘ember’ months – the Eid-del Kabir and Christmas festivities – to flood Nigerian markets with imported rice. These bags, it was discovered, have been warehoused for over six months under an unwholesome condition

Politics › Why I Named My Dog ‘buhari’ — Trader by gratiaeo(op): 7:14am On Aug 18, 2016
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/named-dog-buhari-trader/

By Emma Nnadozie, Crime Editor

The Police in Ogun State, yesterday, released unconditionally, the 30-year-old trader, Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, who was arrested last Saturday for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari’.

The embattled trader, Chinakwe.
The embattled trader, who was visibly angry after his three-day incarceration in police cell, was let off the hook around 5pm on Tuesday after the intervention of both the Serkin Hausa and President-General of non-indigenes in the state.

It was learned that the prompt intervention of the elders made the complainant to withdraw the case he reported against the trader at Sango-Ota division which was later transferred to Police headquarters at Eleweran.

However, police sources said both the complainant and suspect were made to sign an undertaking not to cause any breach of peace again.

Speaking to Vanguard after this release, the trader, a father of two from the Niger Delta, who trades on second hand clothing lamented that he was made to suffer for no just cause.

Complainant from Niger Republic

Narrating his ordeal, Chinakwe said “It is annoying because the complainant is from Niger Republic and I am sure he is one of those illegal aliens in this country. He connived with one Police Sergeant from the Northern part of Nigeria called Musa, who works at Sango Police division to humiliate me. Worse still, the Divisional Police Officer there, did not help matters as he refused to entertain any plea from me after I was arrested that Saturday night. He simply ordered his men to throw me into the cell.”

Why dog was named Buhari

Continuing, he said “I did not commit any offence. I named my beloved pet dog Buhari, who is my hero. My admiration for Buhari started far back when he was a military Head of State. It continued till date that he is a civilian President. After reading his dogged fight against corruption, which is like a canker worm eating into the very existence of this country, I solely decided to rename my beloved dog which I called Buhari, after him. I did not know that I was committing an offence for admiring Buhari.

Ordeal with Police

“I was intimidated and thrown inside the cell with hardened criminals for about three days. While I was there, the complainant from Niger Republic and Sergeant Musa from the North kept on taunting me saying people from my part of the country are trouble makers and that after detaining me, they will throw me into prison where I will die unsung.

”Even when my wife came with our baby on her back, they stopped her from giving me food. One of my friends that came to see me was also maltreated.

“While taking me to Eleweran the next day, they handcuffed and chained me together with that my friend. Fortunately, when we got to police headquarters, both the Commissioner of Police and other officers were angry with their colleagues at Sango-Ota.

”They were wondering loudly why I was brought to the headquarters over such a minor case. It’s very unfortunate that I have to be so humiliated in my own country because of the antics of a foreigner in connivance with my brother from the North.”
