Osun State Government on Friday described as shameful Thursday’s protests by some secondary school students in the state over its refusal to pay their fees for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination. Due to the cash crunch being experienced by the state, the state government had decided that it would only pay the fees of Senior Secondary School 3 students who had at least four credits in their mock examination. The government has, however, said it was surprising that students who failed their examination and should be remorseful could “vandalise government’s property in the name of protests.” In a statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, which was made available to Saturday PUNCH on Friday, the state government said its refusal to register the students for the external examination was because of their poor performance, saying it would be irresponsible to continue to fund examination registrations of students who did not demonstrate readiness to pass. The statement read in part, “Students who fail to demonstrate their potential success at the final examination by scoring credits in at least four subjects will not be paid for by the government. Any parent who wants to gamble can register their children.” It noted that the government would expect significant improvement in the average performance of its registered students in both WASSCE and National Examination Council examination. It said, “It is this decision of government that some disgruntled few among the students went to the streets to protest against in Ile-Ife and Iwo. “Whereas government decision was first and foremost informed on the need to seek better performance of the students. Besides, the economic realities no longer permit wastage of resources.” Meanwhile, the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Najeem Salaam, has blamed the management of St. John’s High School, Ile-Ife and security agents in the state for the destruction of property belonging to the state government. Salaam, in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo by his media aide, Mr. Goke Butika, also called on the police to bring the persons responsible for vandalising public property to book. He said, “The Commissioner of Police should smoke out the students involved and their instigators for the law to take its course. Such miscreants, who vandalised the radio station are not supposed to be in conventional schools, but juvenile homes. “The state parliament would soon deliberate on what would be the fate of the school management concerned.” Salaam said that the lawmakers would come up with a legislation that would recommend severe punishment for violent attitude in public schools http://www.punchng.com/osun-condemns-students-protests-over-wassce-fees/ |
By Vincent Ujumadu Awka—A team of medical doctors based in the United States of America, USA, under the auspices of Global Eagle Foundation, has performed open heart surgeries on five patients at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Adazi Nnukwu in Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State. The doctors were led by Dr Joe Nwiloh, an indigene of the state and the operation was carried out in partnership with the state government and the Catholic Diocese of Awka. The hospital’s Heart Centre is named after Dr. Nwiloh, who attracted the project and was supported by the Anambra State Government. Of the five patients that were operated upon, four were adults, while one was a child. They were all said to be with failing hearts. The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Uju Nwogu said one of the patients was the first in the South East and South South zones of the country to undergo a coronary artery bypass surgery, adding that this was made possible by the sophisticated state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and mechanical support which the centre has for all heart-related ailments. According to her, the Adazi Nnukwu hospital has become very popular in the area of heart surgery as many people go there for routine checks and consultations. She called on Nigerians to avail themselves of the great life-saving opportunity available in Anambra State to treat their heart diseases and be healthy. Nwogu also called on philanthropic individuals and corporate organizations to contribute to the growth of the center by assisting in acquiring a cardiac catheterization laboratory to enable it complete its diagnostic capabilities. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/anambra-hospital-performs-5-open-heart-surgeries/ |
About twenty persons sustained injuries during a bloody clash among members of All Progressives Congress (APC), at Oka-Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government area of Ondo State. Also, an unconfirmed report said two persons were feared dead during the fracas which ensued between the loyalists of a Governorship aspirant, Dr Segun Abraham who were attacked by supporters of another governorship aspirant of the party during a campaign rally organised by Abraham in the town. Daily Sun reliably gathered that thugs took advantage of the intra-party clash to unleash terror on the town, as the political clash later led to pandemonium. It was learnt that two Journalists who were in the town to cover the campaign rally narrowly escaped being lynched during the melee, as hoodlums attempted to machete them. The reporters while narrating their ordeal said they trekked for several hours before they could escaped from the scene. A resident of the town who spoke with Daily Sun on telephone, Mr Wale Gidado, said the clash was caused by hoodlums who solicited for money from the aspirant. He said the refusal of the aspirant to give money to the hoodlums led to the bloody clash, adding that others took the advantage of the clash to perpetrate troubles in the town. It was learnt that properties worth millions of Naira including, two vehicles belonging to the Peace Corps of Nigeria were destroyed. Witness said that a female supporter of the aspirant was stripped naked by the political thugs, while dangerous weapons were freely used. The governorship aspirant however, linked the attack to a politician in the area, alleging that the hoodlums were being sponsored by one of his rivals from his area. “They cannot suppress peoples’ wish because I have large number of supporters in the party. It is too early for an attack and we must stop encouraging violence in politics,” he said. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/scores-injured-as-apc-supporters-clash-in-ondo/ |

Samuel Eto'o aims to help Boko Haram victims Sets up foundation to raise funds and awareness 'We haven't been affected by such horrors in very long time' (CNN)He's one of world football's best-known names -- and now Samuel Eto'o is using that fame to draw attention to the ongoing crisis that "everyone stops talking about." The former Barcelona and Chelsea star has set up the Yellow Whistleblower FC foundation to raise funds and awareness to help people fleeing Nigeria and Cameroon amid a rising tide of attacks from Boko Haram militants. Earlier this month, Oxfam revealed that more than 1.5 million people have fled their homes in Nigeria alone, while Cameroon -- to which many have escaped -- is an increasing target for cross-border terror attacks. Samuel Eto'o kicks off campaign against Boko Haram 02:55 Islamist group Boko Haram has carried out bombings, assassinations, kidnappings and abductions in its campaign to impose its strict version of Sharia law. Charlie Hebdo Former Cameroon captain Eto'o, who retired from international football last year, told CNN it was time the world stepped up its response to an ongoing catastrophe. The 34-year-old urged leaders and the media to react as they did to the terror attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices in Paris in January. "It is important for us to talk about it -- if we don't do it, who will?" said the four-time African player of the year. "We all tried to offer our support (after Charlie Hebdo). We saw African head of states coming to Paris to offer their support to France. "Why, when it comes to Africa -- when it comes to our continent -- don't we do anything? Maybe because the media are not doing what they should do. "When it comes to Charlie Hebdo, we talk about it. The media were right: It was important to talk about that. However when it comes to Boko Haram, we need to wait for the most horrific things to happen for the media to say a word. "After that, everybody stops talking about it. It is like nothing ever happened. "I think journalists should have denounced this situation. We saw what happened in France. We were very sad about this. We were asking ourselves, 'How can this happen? How can they succeed? How can these people take away lives of happy people who had families and friends?'" Most formidable weapon The soccer star's foundation has already raised more than $75,000 to help displaced victims of Boko Haram terrorism, and Eto'o said he believed Africans in a position to do so must "raise their voices to denounce these horrors and raise awareness." "I was affected, like many of my African brothers, by Boko Haram. We haven't been affected by such horrors in a very long time," he said. "We are seeing these atrocities and we seem powerless. "We need to cope with this situation. We need to denounce it and find solutions at our level while our armed forces do their own job on the ground." Samuel Eto'o and his struggle with racism 03:03 Eto'o said one of the most effective ways to defeat Boko Haram and its ideology would be through education, which he called "the most formidable weapon." "We need to create schools and give the possibility to these children to learn and understand," explained Eto'o, whose illustrious career has taken him to Italy, Spain, Russia, England and Turkey, winning three European Champions League titles. He was reportedly one of the the world's highest-paid players at Anzhi Makhachkala. "Some of these children affected by the situation are young and are easily manipulable, and they are manipulated. These children are used and join this terrorist organization." Last month, an attack by Boko Haram militants on a market and an infirmary in northern Cameroon killed around 30 people and injured 145, according to a military official. The attack provided another demonstration of the Islamist group's reach in Africa. Col. Didier Badjeck, a spokesman for Cameroon's military, said the attackers "came in from across the hills in http://edition.cnn.com/2015/10/29/football/samuel-etoo-cameroon-nigeria-boko-haram-yellow-whistleblower/index.html |

When is this nonsensical president going to settle down for work? |
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday revealed how many Nigerians and some media outfits tried to scuttle his march to Aso Rock. He described the postponement barely 10 days to the poll as one of the many plots by former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and his agents against him. The election which was originally scheduled for February 14, was shifted to March 28 ostensibly to give the Army enough time to tackle the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-east and for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the opportunity to distribute the Permanent Voters Card (PVC). But Shehu said the shift was actually a ploy to rig the election in favour of then incumbent and a coup against Buhari He specifically named the then National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki as one of the masterminds of the several plots or “coup” against him. The President who spoke during the Red Media Summit in Lagos yesterday restated his gratitude to Nigerians for his victory, which he said occurred against all odds. Represented by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Buhari said he won the election despite the use of state forces against him. “Americans say that elections are won on the dollar. It’s very improbable that anybody can win an election without money. We didn’t have advertising money on our campaign. Even when we had little money to spend on advertising, the Nigerian Television Authority was not making available to us slots, neither was AIT. “I remember on a particular night I called NTA, they had 16 slots of one minute adverts and I said I wanted to buy one minute for the Buhari campaign, they said all 16 had been sold. “Some other instances that exposed the partisan nature of the NTA. Money was returned to us, from AIT money was returned to us. They simply won’t advertise for us.” Shehu expressed the presidency’s gratitude to Statecraft, an arm on The Red Media, for “selling an unlikely candidate to a very skeptical nation.” “The day there was a security siege at my home, I woke up to see that my house had been surrounded by armed policemen in the course of the campaign. In fact it was the cocking of their guns that rose me and my family members from our sleep. Only to discover that tens of policemen, police vehicles, and some other unidentified vehicles darkened our windows around my home. “The first thing I did was to say ‘Who will help me out of this situation?’ I needed to expose what was going on, and the first man I reached was Adebola Williams of Statecraft. Adebola began to announce on Facebook and Twitter from that moment until the security elements realized that the whole world was looking at what they were doing, because I remained indoors throughout the siege. “Of course it was much later that we came to know why they had come. Even the APC Presidential Campaign was penetrated by fifth columnists, and I will make this confession, because a day before that siege we had had a meeting with the security committee at which we agreed that we were going to run a story announcing that the National Security Adviser at that time, Mr. Sambo Dasuki, was staging a second coup d’etat against Muhammadu Buhari. “The former National Security Adviser was involved in a coup that threw out Muhammadu Buhari as military president in 1984. “This time around, all the things that followed, the postponement of the election on account of this and that and a lot of the thinking of the campaign was that this was yet another coup being hatched by the National Security Adviser and we eventually discovered that this siege on our homes was to pre-empt the story.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/coup-against-me-during-2015-elections-buhari/ |
