The advancement of science and technology is surely one of the greatest organized, creative activities of humankind today. The material world we see around us, and the way society functions today are direct manifestations of these advances. The origin of science lies in the evaluation of the human beings, and the intrinsic sense of curiosity in human beings to explore, to know and to understand nature and the world around. Historically, origins of science go back to the beginning of civilized existence. From its earliest days, science has been embedded in society, there has been a continuous learning process in the society as a whole, based on day to day activities/experiences and this can become the body of the knowledge from which applications and understanding have grown. In the early sixteenth century, early scientist such as Sir Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, Albert Einstein, John Dalton, Lord Rutherford, among others were pioneers and fathers of modern day technological advancement. These early scientists were concerned about the primitiveness that had gradually engulfed the society in those days. Their curiosity and zeal for science opened doors to new discoveries and theories. Sir Isaac Newton, commonly known as the father of modern day physics, studied motion extensively. With these, he was able to come out with three theories on motion, which was later made a law after being tested and confirmed by co-scientists at that time. The first law was centered on a body at rest (inertial). He explained that the body would continue to be at rest or uniform motion on a straight line unless it was acted upon by an external force. Sir Newton also stated that action and reactions are equal and opposite. These laws are being applied extensively in the manufacturing and automobile Industries. Sir Francis Bacon wrote: “Human knowledge and human power are co-extensive, for ignorance of causes prevent us from producing effects. Nature can only be ruled by being obeyed; for the causes which theory discovers, give the rules which practice applies”. Bacon’s words bring out the purpose of scientific activity. It is to discover the laws of nature so as to widen human kind’s perspective and understanding of the world we live in, to increase the basis of our material existence, and to help us fight the physical and biological calamities that beset us in our progress through life. The Nigeria of today, is no doubt gradually been engulfed by the technological advancements in the world. This is evident in the number of manufacturing industries sited at strategic places in the country, which ranges from food processing industries, automobile industries, steel industries, oil refineries e.t.c. Therefore, the desperate need for young and educated scientist cannot be over-emphasized, owing to the level and speed at which the world is growing. The Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry students in particular are trained specifically to work in industries ranging from textile industries, lather factories, petro-chemical industries and refineries to metal industries. All these use chemicals and simultaneously produce pollution. Now-a-days chemical effluent treatment plants use chemicals to control or neutralize the hazardous impact of pollutants produced by the industries. Petrol and diesel emit out greenhouse gases dangerous for the survival on earth which damage the ozone layer that protects us from UV rays. As a result global warming has taken place which is a destroyer of the planet earth. But again chemistry paves the way with bio-fuels. In conclusion, science and technology will continue to advance rapidly as we move into the next millennium. What is important is to ensure that these advances benefit humanity as a whole parochial considerations of narrow commercial interests, nationalism, fundamentalist religious aspects and inflexible ideological divides have to give way to the basic ethnics of human dignity and human rights and harmony with mature; value systems that are outside the realm of science but have to guide its applicatioons. MY POSTULATION ON KOGI GUBER LOGJAM: HAVING REFLECTED DEEPLY ON THE KOGI STATE GUBER LOGJAM THE BEST SOLUTION OUT OF THIS CONUNDRUM IS A TOTAL CANCELLATION AND A FRESH ELECTION CONDUCTED BY INEC TO ELECT A NEW GOVERNOR. THE SPEAKER OF KOGI STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY IN THE INTERIM SHOULD ACT AS GOVERNOR AT THE EXPIRATION OF GOVERNOR IDRIS WADA'S TENURE IN JANUARY, 2016 PENDING WHEN FRESH ELECTION IS CONDUCTED AND NEW GOVERNOR EMERGED. AT THIS JUNCTURE, A COURT ORDER STOPPING THE SUPPLEMENTARY ELECTION SCHEDULED FOR 5TH DECEMBER CANNOT BE OVEREMPHASIZED AND SHOULD BE OBTAINED BY ANY OF THE POLITICAL ACTORS WITHOUT DELAY. THIS IN MY OPINION WILL PUT AN END TO VARIOUS AGITATIONS BY ALL CONTENDING CAMPS FOR A SHORTCUT TO VICTORY OR JACKPOT MANDATE. THE KOGI STATE GUBER LOGJAM WHICH WAS ORCHESTRATED BY THE SUDDEN DEATH OF APC CANDIDATE PRINCE ABUBAKAR IS A VERY DICEY SITUATION, NO WONDER THERE ARE AVALANCHE LINE OF ARGUMENTS AND COUNTER-AGREEMENTS OR PERSPECTIVES BY LAWYERS, PUBLIC AFFAIRS ANALYSTS, JOURNALISTS, BLOGGERS, FACEBOOKERS NAME THEM. IF INEC PROCEED WITH THE SUPPLEMENTARY ELECTION WITHOUT A SUPREME COURT PRONOUNCEMENT ON THIS PRECARIOUS SITUATION, WHO EVER EMERGE AS WINNER I FORESEE HIS ELECTION BEEN NULLIFIED AND A FRESH ELECTION ORDERED BY THE TRIBUNAL; IN ORDER TO AVOID FURTHER WASTE OF FUNDS FRESH ELECTION IS THE BEST ANTIDOTE TO THIS QUAGMIRE. FINALLY, I CALL ON OUR LAWMAKERS TO COMMENCE IMMEDIATE REVIEW AND AMENDMENT OF OUR ELECTORAL ACTS AND CONSTITUTION IN ORDER TO ADDRESS THIS SEEMINGLY LACUNA AND OTHER HIDDEN AND INHERENT UNFORESEEN SITUATION AND CIRCUMSTANCE THAT MAY BE SIMILAR TO THIS THAT MAY ARISE IN FUTURE. GOD BLESS NIGERIA! |
