A senior Nigerian academic has said most Nigerian graduates cannot write, speak and think, and cannot function properly as professionals. They lack the requisite skills and are largely unemployable. Dr. Doyin Salami, an Associate Professor and Faculty Member at the Lagos Business School, made this assertion at the 2017 TAMS Summit in Lagos recently where he was the Keynote Speaker. The university don, who delivered an address on the theme, “Boosting Employee Performance beyond Pecuniary Benefits”, described as pitiable the inability of most Nigerian graduates to either write, speak or independently think for themselves, as experienced from the several job interviews he had conducted. maryjan8:Please see below initial action before now: Last year, Nigerian government dragged Turkish Airlines before a Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged criminal violation of the enabling law of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) and for impunity. The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), filed a three-count charge against the airline and two of its principal officers, Liker Ayci and Rasak Shobowale, the airline’s board chairman and commercial manager, respectively, before court. The prosecution was as a result of the refusal by Turkish Airlines to respond to the lawful requests from CPC for a full situation report on the airline’s alleged shoddy treatment of passengers on Flight TK 623 from Istanbul to Abuja on 25th and 31st of December 2015 and 9th of January 2016, which prompted the council to approach the Office of the Attorney General for the prosecution of the airline. Rather than take the rights of the Nigerian consumer seriously, the same airline once again allegedly abandoned meted out same shoddy treatment to students and teachers of Glisten International College, Abuja in Istanbul, Turkey, over the inability of Turkish Airlines to airlift them back to Nigeria as scheduled. |

I have a BA in Philosophy and have worked in sectors that include the media, bilateral trade, information and communication technology, aviation, investment banking, consulting, FMCG and development finance. My wife also studied philosophy - she works for a tech firm. My course-of-study/degree certificate did not get me my first job. Fledging writing skill and extra-curricula activity in the university working on several editorial boards did. The rest as they say is history. My thoughts: Seek professional certification in PR (NIPR), Advertising (APCON), Marketing (NIMN), HR (CIPM), Digital Marketing (Free Google trainings), Journalism (NUJ) etc. While seeking your choice certification, volunteer for free with an organisation in your area of interest to build capacity and acquire requisite skills... And everything good will come! |

Ghanaian University Sends Out Bayelsa Undergraduates From Hostels, Bars Them From Writing Exams ![]() Scholarship students from Bayelsa State studying at King’s University College, Accra, Ghana, are facing trying times. They were denied access to examination halls and the institution’s hostels, according to a Punch newspaper report. This is happening more than three weeks after the Bayelsa State Government said that it had approved the payment of school fees for its stranded students studying abroad. The government had on November 24, 2016, indicated that Governor Seriake Dickson released £300,000 and $450,000 for the payment of tuition for students of the state on scholarship abroad. The Commissioner for Education, Mr. Markson Fefegha, was quoted then as saying that the release of the funds, despite the sharp decline in the revenue accruing to the state, was a show of the government’s commitment to the education of its people. The commissioner had said the release of £250,000 was made to offset tuition and other fees of Bayelsa students studying for their doctorate degrees in the United Kingdom. He had also said the sum of $150,000 was approved for Bayelsa students studying at the Lincoln University in the United States, as well as the payment if $40,000 to some Bayelsa students studying in Ghana... http://www.jalupon.com/ghanaian-university-sends-out-bayelsa-undergraduates-from-hostels-bars-them-from-writing-exams/

Kohistani Case: For Dancing Together, Five Girls And Family Members Of Boy Killed In Pakistan What is now globally known as the Kohistan case unfolded in a conservative rural region where social mingling between genders was taboo. Young girls’ participating in a co-educational singing party was risky enough, but someone posted the video on the Internet, where it spread rapidly, bringing shame on their community before the vast virtual world. The head of the local jirga, a Muslim cleric, allegedly issued a religious decree ordering the five girls to be killed for dishonoring their tribe, along with the boy seen dancing and every member of his family. There was no resistance from the community. After the girls were disposed of, several brothers of the boy were also caught and killed. The rest of the family, including Afzal Kohistani, fled the area. There things stood for more than a year. No crimes were reported and no one came to investigate. Kohistani, a college graduate from one of the area’s wealthier families, said he repeatedly approached local and provincial officials, reporting the killings and seeking protection, but was chided for opposing the jirga’s verdict... http://www.jalupon.com/kohistani-case-for-dancing-together-five-girls-and-family-members-of-boy-killed-in-pakistan/ www.jalupon.com - Thought leadership articles, soft and hard news from Nigeria, Africa and the World
