Massive Corruption Scandal At National Identity Management Commission; DG, Onyemenam Enmeshed In N50 Billion Fraud

•DG unlawfully spending his 9th Year in Office
•Refuses to Pay Severance Package to Sacked Staff since 3 years
•DG Under Panic to Abscond

On Monday, 25th August, 2015 Barrister Chris Onyemenam visited the Presidential Villa, at that visit it was widely reported that President Muhammadu Buhari was registered for his National Identity Card by the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC.

Onyemenam had at the villa told Journalists that from the NIMC Database, that he has been able to register about seven million Nigerians and that in collaboration with other agencies, in the next three months the number will be quadrupled.

But a NIMC staff who spoke on the condition of anonymity told this medium that the DG, should bury his head in shame, “Is Onyemenam not ashamed of himself by making such statement that he has only registered a paltry seven million Nigerians, since 2007 when he became the Director General of the Commission. Out of over 140 million Nigerians, Barrister Onyemenam could only boast of registering only seven million and he is happy to say it to the world.”

“We all know that he is mired in corruption in collaboration with senior management officials of the Organisation, but we know their time is up, the staff said.”

Universalreporters247.com learnt that some workers in the Commission such as drivers, and some technicians who are on contract with the organisation has not been paid for months, some are being owed three months, while some are being owed five months.

Meanwhile, this medium learnt that this may not be the best time for the Director General following an open letter written by Citizens United for Peace and Stability, CUPS, to President Buhari on the brazen being perpetrated by the DG.

In the letter dated 26/8/2015, and signed by Dr. Idris Ahmed, President and Founder of CUPS divulged how the Director General turned the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC into a commercial entity, using it to enrich himself.

In the letter titled: Exposed! Massive N50 Billion Corruption At National Identity Management Commission – An Open Letter To His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, CUPS, stated that they are compelled to write to the President on matters of national importance, CUPS, said; “Very senior staff at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have contacted us, raising alarm about ongoing massive corruption in the commission, which has since almost crippled its operations.”

According to CUPS, it said; “It can be recalled that NIMC was established by an act of Parliament (Act No. 23 of 2007), with the sole aim of fostering the orderly development of an Identity Sector, and building a modern Identity Management System for Nigeria. Some of the objectives of the organisation includes the followingsada) Create, operate, and manage a secure, sustainable National Identity Database for Nigeria; (b) Build and manage an Identity Authentication and Verification Service Infrastructure for Nigeria; (c) Establish Permanent Registration Centres across the country to enrol every Nigerian and legal resident at his/her convenience; and (d) Issue a chip based, highly secure and user friendly multi-application Smart Card to facilitate online/offline identity authentication and verification.”

According to CUPS, it said in spite of the benefits of NIMC to the country, it said that the commission is a shambolic white elephant; “It is saddled with grandeur corruption running into billions of Naira. As discovered by our investigation, during which we received input from many NIMC staff, corruption at the highest management level is endemic. We hereby outline some of the corruption charges raised.”

Chronicle of brazen corruption perpetrated by the current Director- General of the Commission, Barrister Chris Onyemenam, as enumerated by CUPS in it open letter to President Buhari shows how he spent over N50 billion of the Commission’s fund with nothing tangible to show for. Only a paltry 2 million ID cards have been issued since 2007. Similarly, the National Identity Database is a sham. It contains no more than 10 million records, out of a potential 180 million. Besides the DG and his senior colleagues, nobody can tell exactly where the bulk of the N50 billion went to, CUPS said.

“Without proper feasibility studies of the security implications, without due consultation with Nigerian security apparatus, and without due process of bidding, the current DG commercialised the National Identity Database. He solely handedly entered into a commercial agreement with MasterCard, which enables the National ID Card to operate as a Credit Card. Your Excellency, the security and commercial implication of this mistake are enormous.”

According to the NIMC bank account obtained by CUPS, showed that at least N400 million has been squandered in the so called National Agricultural Payment Initiative (NAPI). The N400 was paid to Cellulant Nigeria Ltd. Cellulant is a mobile e-commerce and content management company. It manages, delivers, and bills digital content over mobile telephone network. On 22/7/2015, a whopping N200 million was transferred from NIMC Zenith Bank account to Cellulant.

“The NAPI contract between NIMC and Cellulant is unlawful. It was done devoid of due process of law. There was no proper advertisement for tender, no proper bidding process, and no proper screening exercise that determined the final winner of such a significant contract. Everything was shrouded in secrecy,” CUPS said.

Speaking further, the organisation in its petition stated thus; “Your Excellency, there is also another ongoing scandalous contract between NIMC and a shadowy company called IFY EZE NIGERIA LTD, of no specific address. Without due process of advertisement, bidding for tender, and screening, this company was awarded the contract to supply NIMC with diesel to fuel its generators. Even though the highest cost of 1 litre of diesel is N150 in the market, IFY EZE is allowed to supply diesel to NIMC at the extortionist cost of N250 per litre. On 25/7/2015, the sum of N43,321,759.42 and N6,678,240.58 were transferred from NIMC Zenith Bank Account to IFY EZE.”

“Since 2012, the current DG has spent over N50 million supposedly trying to connect the NIMC offices with the national grid. Up until the time of wring this report, this project has not been implemented. Instead of prioritising the connection of NIMC offices to the national grid to save money, N50 million has been wasted with no results. And at least another N50,000,000 (N43,321,759.42 + N6,678,240.58) has wastefully being paid to shadowy IFY EZE NIGERIA LTD to supply diesel at exorbitant price per litre,” the letter said.

The letter reads thus; “Your Excellency, even the staff at NIMC are not safe from the treachery of their DG. On 18/8/2013 he sacked 3,099 staff under the pretext that they did not have degree qualifications. Not long after that, some more unfortunate staff was unlawfully laid off. These unlawful acts were supported by the then Labour Minister, John Wagu, who we learnt benefited from the illicit lay-off operations. Despite being ordered by the 7th National Assembly to settle the benefits of the sacked employees, none of them is settled as of the time of writing this report.”

In the letter CUPS made some recommendations to President Muhammadu Buhari, in the recommendation it said; “Your Excellency, we contend that it is inimical to national interest to renew the contract of NIMC DG, Mr. Barrister Chris Onyemenam. He has demonstrated propensity towards corruption, he is clearly incompetent, and is therefore not fit for purpose. He has already served two successive terms of 4 years each, and had his contract unlawfully extended by another one year by the then Secretary to the Federal Government, Pius Anyim Pius; All contracts entered into between NIMC and other parties since 2007 should immediately be cancelled and thoroughly investigated, as they were done without due process of law.”

Making further recommendation to the President, CUPS said; “The commercial partnering with MasterCard is inimical to Nigeria’s commercial and security interests. We contend that it is dangerous to commercialise the National Identity Database in this way. Therefore we advise his Excellency to terminate this senseless contract with immediate effect; The new employees hired by the DG after the unlawful sacking of over 3,099 staff are mainly people with even less qualifications. They were employed only as favours to friends and family. They should be screened and retained only on merit; The over 3,099 employees unlawfully sacked by the DG, whose benefits have still not been paid, should be settled by the Federal Government to ease suffering on them and their families; The National Identity Management Commission and the National Population Commission are serving very similar functions. Billions of Naira could be saved annually in overhead costs by simply merging the two commissions.

Meanwhile, CUPS in its latest report stated that: “following its open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on 26/8/2015, and our subsequent update on 27/8/2015, in which we reported grandeur theft worth over N50 billion by the DG National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), we are reliably informed that a witch-hunt exercise has commenced today at the commission.

“The NIMC Director General, Barrister Chris Onyemenam, seems to be in total disarray since we exposed him on 26/8/2015. He spent the whole day harassing and threatening his staff to reveal the identity of the person who leaked this attached bank statement. Of course we know that he will never succeed! This grandeur thief of billions of Naira is totally oblivious of the fact that his every move is actually being recorded, and will be used against him when he gets to the Court. The man seems to be going from frying pan to fire,” CUPS said.

According to CUPS it said; “As a reminder, Barrister Chris Onyemenam has been the DG at NIMC for the past nine years. He systematically brought down the organisation and made it worthless, despite taking more than N50 billion from the Federal Government. Furthermore, without any provocation and warning, he unlawfully sacked nearly 5,000 low ranking employees in 2013. This brought immense suffering to all the families affected, and even death to some of them. We spoke with some of the affected families. Their story is not pleasant to hear.”

More update on the revealing corruption shows that following the CUPS open letter to his Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari on 26/8/2015, CUPS said that they are in a position to reveal that more witnesses have come forward to expose the rot at the agency.”

“Meanwhile we have been reliably informed that panic has set in at NIMC. An emergency meeting was held in Abuja, the meeting which was chaired by the DG Barrister Chris Onyemenam and his senior management officials are making plans of what to do next. Even as CUPS said that absconding may be one of their options,” said CUPS.

Thought you said you were hoping to get a job with them, loved your post..but your insultive comments are enough reason to disqualify you if I am the HR manager.

I am happy you are not HR Manager, else the dream of a long-suffering young man would have been aborted.

The 'insultive comments' were a direct reaction to lies, falsehood and deliberate attempt to tarnish a reputable brand of Nigerian Orijin (sorry origin).

Celebrating Seni Adetu

Posted by: Alvin Afadama in Business November 2, 2014

It is no longer news that the erst while MD/CEO of Guinness Nigeria Plc will be moving on to another role effective January 1, a role to be announced closer to that time.

Today, we want to celebrate this enigmatic business leader who has made a remarkable impact on not just the Nigerian business landscape, but across Africa in general. It would be recalled that this gentlemen, who has had a distinguished career of nearly 30 years working for multinational companies such as John Holt, Coca-Cola and Guinness (Diageo) first had his general management experience in 2001, when he was heading all of West Africa (excluding Nigeria) for Coca-Cola based in Accra, Ghana. He later joined Guinness Ghana as the first African MD/CEO in the nearly 40 year’s history of the company. In that period, he led the company to becoming the best company in the entire Diageo (Guinness) International in 2008 and was subsequently promoted to run the East African Breweries Plc as Group Managing Director/CEO in 2009 where he further blossomed to the extent he was runner up ForbesBusiness Leader of the Year in East Africa.

Since taking over the mantle at Guinness Nigeria, where he became the first Nigeria in almost 20 years as Managing Director, whilst the company has had a tough period relating to soft topline as a result of down-trading into value segment for a company with a largely premium portfolio, Seni Adetu has led the company creditably and seems to be bowing out when the ovation is loudest. Under his watch, he has completely re-shaped the portfolio to make the company much more competitive.

Unlike in the period prior to his assumption of office, the company now competes strongly in the value segment with its Dubic and a repositioned Satzenbrau.

Furthermore, he led the renovation of core brands such as Guinness and Harp, which are now both looking so much trendier and complemented by such powerful campaigns as Made of Black.

He also justifiably prides himself in the quality of the innovation he has put into the Nigerian market. Aside from the relatively successful Snapp he launched a couple of years ago, perhaps by far the most market-defining innovation ofthe decade is the recently launched Orijin brand – which comes as Orijin Bitters and Orijin ready to drink. These brands are said to be flying and are well adored by the adult Nigerian consumers – male and female -huge credit to him for the execution of this innovation.

As a football loving executive, his support – personal and company-wise, for the Super Eagles is well demonstrated. It was he who led the corporate world through Guinness, in providing support for the national team in the run-in to the 2013 African Nations Cup (which the Super Eagles won) and the 2014 World Cup with Guinness as the official beverage. But none of these achievements is surprising considering that he has always been a career-marketer, having once being the Marketing Director for Coca-Cola in Nigeria.

Beyond his commercial astuteness, Seni Adetu is very passionate about people that work for him. It is no wonder that within weeks of his assumption of office a couple of years ago, his first instinct was to bring together all GN staff at an all-staff conference where he spelt out his vision for the company and his personal purpose in life. Since then he has proceeded in engaging key talent into Guinness Nigeria Plc atvarious levels and across functions in the organisation. But anyone that listens to Seni would know very quickly that he believes, as he says, in the “tripod” of People, Performance and Reputation. To that extent, he has always said that under his watch there must be no single case bothering on integrity or reputation.

In a phone chat yesterday he said, “I am so grateful to God that by the time I am done, we would be celebrating a Nigerian who has led a multi-national company absolutely intact. We have not had any issues that could negatively affect the reputation of the company and I humbly believe this is largely due to the “tone from the top” and the focus we have on ensuring we are always clean as it relates to controls, compliance and ethics.”

Today, we celebrate the man of integrity who has done Nigeria proud and who is poised for even greater heights.

Education / AIESEC Nigeria: A Peep Into Youth Leadership by Greycells(m): 8:51pm On Jun 22, 2015
How time flies. The famous Omolayole Annual Lecture Series that started in 1985 is already 30years, and what a way to celebrate it other than to bring up a high profile Guest Lecturer (Mr Seni Adetu), the outgoing Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria PLC to deliver a high profile and most urgently relevant topic in our present day Nigeria “Social Entrepreneurship As A Tool For National Economic Development” held at the prestigious NECA Auditorium, Ikeja.

As one of the well-known Omolayole products at Lever Brothers, and a Part Time Senior Consultant and Development Economist at Omolayole Associates. I was invited by the organizers, as always. Before we delve into the brilliant handling of the somewhat confusing lecture topic by Seni Adetu (Adetu? Is this a Nigerian name or Ghanaian? I have made some enquiries but haven’t yet got an answer!) Before we go into summarizing the Seni Adetu’s lecture let me let you into a secret.

Although we all enjoyed and benefited from that lecture, I didn’t intend to write an article to summarize my impressions. The inspiration to write came upon me on Tuesday 30th September 2014, whilst listening to that intelligent broadcaster on Inspiration FM, the glorious Gloria Maduka. On her beat for that day, which coincided with the eve of Nigeria’s Independence Day Anniversary, Gloria sent out a big question to all her listeners “Mention one or two people you know, either present or past, who have added value to Nigeria through their Leadership Traits”. The response was overwhelming as it was enthusiastic. As would be expected, most of the callers came up with those names in the realm of Politics.

Not one of them came up with a University Professor, a Scientist, or a name from that special breed of human beings, Agent of Change in their Communities, Towns, States, and none, within the ranks of Captains of Industry. As I began to ponder on that urgently relevant poser by Gloria Maduka, my mind veered towards the last Omolayole annual lectures, and there from, into the organizers, AIESEC Alumni Association Nigeria, a body comprising of young professionals in various fields, a group of young men and women professionals in various fields. Inaugurated in 1981, they made up their minds to make a major impact on their Environment, especially in the area of Management Education, Management Practice and Management Development. While still deliberating on what to do, that would best announce their arrival on the Corporate stage, Dr Mike Omolayole retired as the Executive Chairman of Lever Brothers PLC.

What a pleasant coincidence! An Annual Lecture series had already been decided upon by AIESEC Alumni Nigeria and, Dr Mike Omolayole had already been penciled down to deliver the inaugural lecture. It was not exactly, songs of Halleluyas that erupted from within the ranks of AIESEC alumni Nigeria, for Christians and Muslims abound almost in equal numbers.

Rather, it was a spontaneous and inward shout of excitement akin to those “Eureka” Moments of Discovery by Archimedes. What to do? The AIESEC Alumni Nigeria Executives (Olawale Adewoyin, now a big man in the USA, was President, the Late Herbert Awak Essien was Vice President, Sola Oyetayo a Chartered Accountant was Secretary and main coordinator for many years, Muyiwa Iwayemi, now a key player in the banking sector, also played his own part, Idris Yakubu, a top management staff of Fidelity Bank, as well as many others), all of those men and women sat down and opted to take a big gamble.

Instead of asking Dr Mike Omolayole to deliver the inaugural lecture, why not gamble on a risky No for an answer, by proposing an Annual Omolayole Lecture series in his honour, such that would focus on pressing national issues with emphasis on Management, Management Development, Business, Banking and Finance, and Institution of Government that touch on the lives of all Nigerian?
Trust Dr Omolayole, never to jump at offers that would resemble a “Greek Gift”. He wasn’t convinced that those young men and women would have the staying power to sustain an uninterrupted Annual Lecture Series and advised them not to start what they could not finish.

Undaunted by Omolayole’s justifiable pessimisism, those AIESEC Alumni Nigeria executives and members went ahead to organize the first ever Omolayole Annual Management Lecture in 1985 and was titled “Industrialization and Economic Recovery”, delivered by Chief Earnest Shonekan. Up to date 30 lectures have been painstakingly organized by the AIESEC Alumni Nigeria, and delivered by very prominent and well respected men from all over Nigeria.

By the time they organized the second lecture in 1986 and the third lecture in 1987, Dr Omolayole began to feel at ease and more confident of their ability and was now ready to give them all the cooperation and connections that would best advance their mission – a productive symbiosis that has produced the first ever 30years of unbroken lecture series in honour of Dr Omolayole.

Let’s go back to the 30th lecture in the series, delivered by the outgoing Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria PLC, Seni Adetu – Social Entrepreneurship as the Tool for National Economic Development”. Seni Adetu’s brilliant handling of the topic gave all of us present, a sample of the top quality decisions that precede the proroduction of a top quality international brand like Guinness Stout and Malta Guinness in Nigeria. He showcased himself as a brilliant and homemade Chief Executive of a Multinational Corporate Outfit. Let’s summarize his expose as follows…

Social Entrepreneurship is a dynamic and compelling need of a Developing country like Nigeria, which if focused upon, will help enhance and sustain the process of Economic Development through employment generation, reduction of unrest and social tension among the estimated 65million unemployed youths in Nigeria.

As desirable as Social Entrepreneurship is, it is often made Unattainable by an inadvertent or perhaps deliberate lack of focus by governments at all levels and by many Corporate Organizations.
Lack of easy access to funding, Environmental and Cultural factors, lack of access to appropriate and modern technology as well as a near absence of Research and Development and, above all, the fear of failure are major impediments also highlighted by Seni Adetu.

In spite of all these impediments however Seni Adetu counsels, “when there a will, there is always a way-out” That way out is for all of us, governments and parastatals at all levels, politicians, philanthropist and community leaders, to stand up and be counted in promoting social entrepreneurship. With Nigeria massive unemployment among the youths now hovering around the 64million mark (so says a recent report from New York) the time to stand up and be counted is Now!

Let’s return to our heroes and heroines at AIESEC Alumni Nigeria. Many of these young men and women who opted to pull their talents, knowledge and experience together for the common good of the larger society through honouring an Icon of Industry and Management Best Practices, Dr Mike Omolayole, have been handsomely rewarded in their various careers. Mrs Mosun Bello Olusoga is an Ex-Executive Director of GTB and now Director at Access Bank. Mrs Ifueko Omoigui-Okairu, is an Ex-Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service and now a Director of Diamond Bank PLC, Mrs Sola David-Borha is the current and well respected CEO at Stanbic-IBTC Bank.

The impressive list continues. Mfon Usoro, an FCMB Drirector, Olusola Oyetayo a Chartered Accountant, Idris Yakubu, a top management staff at Fidelity Bank and Brenda Nwagwu, a fast rising Advertising Practitioner. All of these names have contributed immensely to the 30years story of what Nigerian youths can achieve, and have indeed achieved through theses 30 painstaking years of Omolayole Lecture Series.

30years ago, these well motivated and determined young men and women gathered themselves together and asked “What can we do for Nigeria?” Organizing Omolayole Annual Lectures consistently and uninterruptedly for these 30years, is what they have achieved. Their “Young Has Grown! They all sowed a seed into nature and nature has rewarded all of them with bountiful harvest in terms of achievements and fulfillments in their private and professional lives.

What is the “Koko Inu Iwe Irohin” (summary) in all of these?
By organising the Omolayole lecture series for 30years continuously, Nigerian Youths, through the platform of AIESEC Alumni Nigeria, have indicated clearly and loudly, that there is a lot more Nigeria can tap from their bountiful energy and Thought Processes. It is my considered opinion that Nigeria has shot herself in the legs by deliberately ignoring the huge potentials of the youths, by overconcentrating attention on Politics and Politicians.

By this laudable feat of the youths of AIESEC Alumni Nigeria, a great challenge is hereby thrown on the laps of Youths everywhere to organize Programs and Events that would celebrate Leadership and Honour in all other areas of human endeavors.

There are so many Omolayole’s in Nigeria, who have dedicated their lives and talents to adding great value to Nigeria. Let us begin to celebrate them too. AIESEC Alumni Nigeria has, for 30years been rubbing minds and sending their proposals to Government.

The last of such organized meeting and rubbing of minds was through those Annual Nigerian Institute of Management Lectures, through which the Opinion and Contributions of Major Players in Government and Organized Private Sector were highlighted, debated upon, summarized and then sent to Government. Nigerian Institute of Management, Centre for Management Development, COREN, Nigerian Economic Society and all such Professional Bodies, please wake up and let your members voices begin to sound the “Alarum Bell” as to the grave challenges confronting Nigeria at the moment and offer us the way forward.

Highlights of the 2nd Annual Christopher Kolade Lecture on Business Integrity

The 2nd installment of the annual Christopher Kolade lecture series held yesterday, September 11, 2014 and it was well attended by industry leaders, regulators, academia and members of the press.

The evening started with a welcome address by Soji Apampa, Executive director of the Convention on Business integrity who mentioned that the reason why the lecture series was named after Christopher Kolade was because he exemplified business integrity as practiced throughout his distinguished career in the private and public sectors.

Christopher Kolade’s welcome remarks followed that of Mr. Apampa and he said that naming the lecture series after him was the singular greatest honor given to him. He then went on to enunciate what integrity meant to him. He said it meant always trying to do what is right and when in doubt about what the right thing is, it is avoidance of that which is wrong. Finally, to him integrity also meant resisting what was wrong, and he said this was the part most lacking among Nigerians as many of us are wont to keep quiet in the face of wrongdoing.

The Keynote speaker, Ms. Arunma Oteh kicked up the ante in the room by delivering a speech on the night’s theme, which was “ The Business case for Business Integrity”. She cited some studies that showed that on average, integrity was associated with superior business performance. She also cited examples of firms and individuals that experience the converse when they engaged in shoddy business practices. Also, she mentioned that adopting integrity was a sure way of improving Nigeria’s global competitiveness given our poor ranking in the just released World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report.

To discuss the ramifications of the theme further, the distinguished panel moderated my Mr. Opeyemi Agbaje gave their take on how their various Nigerian businesses practiced business integrity and what Nigerian businesses in general should be prepared to do. Interestingly, the participants differed in their philosophy on how to advance business integrity. For example, whilst Ms. Ayotola Jagun of Oando opined that Nigerian businesses that performed well should be rewarded and given incentives like preferred supplier status, Professor Juan Elegido said that such approach only reinforces the love for incentives and not necessarily a love for integrity. The Managing Director of Siemens Nigeria showed that organizations are able to reinvent themselves after a murky past by affirming Siemens corporation-wide change in adopting sound corporate governance practices that has been recognized as Siemens comes first for the 4th year running on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

Overall, it was an interesting night with a very lovely ambience and delicious food. The key challenge is whether the various guests will be able to turn this knowledge that “Integrity pays” into practice.

Corruption thrives in Nigeria — Christopher Kolade

MAY 3, 2015 : SAMUEL AWOYINFA

Former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Christopher Kolade, has observed that many Nigerians no longer stand on the side of what is right.

According to him, this is because corruption thrives in the country.

He made the submission while delivering a keynote address at the 13th Synod of the Egba Diocese, The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, which held on Friday at the Bishop’s Court, Onikolobo, Abeokuta.

Kolade noted that many Nigerians, including Christians, compromised their faith when faced with uncertainties of life. He said this was as a result of fear or the need to have their expectations met.

He said, “Today, the Nigerian Christian faces the uncomfortable reality that corruption seems to be the most prominent feature of our way of life.

“Due to corruption, there are many uncertainties in the Nigerian environment, which put a great deal of pressure on faith. The reason is simple. Uncertainty means that we are not sure of what to expect; therefore, the situations in our business may be out of control.

“Nobody likes to lose control, no one enjoys being caught by an unpleasant surprise. Therefore, we want to insure ourselves, to make sure that, whatever happens, we shall not fail to achieve our expectations.”

Kolade, who spoke on the theme: ‘A call to true Christian living in Nigeria,’ explained that the country was blessed with good climate, abundant natural resources and manpower, but the missing link was the failure of the people to live holy and follow the examples of Christ.

Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, who declared the synod open, commended the Diocesan Bishop of Egba, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Adekunle, for the constructive criticism of his administration, stressing that “this has really helped me a lot.”

He said his re-election and the achievements he had recorded in the last four years were made possible by the help of God.

In his charge, Adekunle said the church had recorded successes in evangelism, church planting, clergy welfare, agro-allied and rural development and construction of new administrative block.

Business / Seni Adetu: Defining Reputation Through Leadership And Action by Greycells(m): 4:41pm On Jun 20, 2015
This post is part of an online series, cohosted with Business Fights Poverty, featuring essays from New Africa: From Growth to Jobs, a recent report by IGD and Business Action for Africa.

Nigeria is a nation in transition. It is clear that while there have been instances recently which have unsettled Nigeria’s growth trajectory, there is no doubt of the long term economic potential of the country, the momentum it has gained by adopting a market-oriented approach and the reforms it is enacting through policy development and efforts to increase transparency. In a number of areas, the opportunity in Nigeria has come to symbolise a new economic era in Africa and is the focus of increased foreign investment and greater commercial competition.

Nigeria is also a nation of great diversity, embracing a wide span of religions, cultures, languages and traditions, and a people that are collectively defined by their optimism and energy. This entrepreneurial spirit embodies the pride, the hard work and the resilience of Nigerians and, together with better access to capital, has led to the emergence of some amazing success stories, particularly in private sector development where home-grown businesses have become pan regional, even global, in their ambitions. Nigeria’s reputation for being serious about business is enhanced by the success of these organisations. It is also strengthened by government taking a harder line on corruption and by more businesses adopting and demanding high standards of governance and corporate integrity. This in turn engenders trust among institutions, stakeholders and civil society.

People often talk of Nigeria’s vast deposits of fossil fuels as its greatest export potential, but in many respects, its dynamic and entrepreneurial people are its most enabling natural resource. Human capital is after all the one common factor that drives development and associated growth no matter what sector, no matter what economy.

At Guinness Nigeria, our people are our difference. They are the game changers in a new reality which sees both challenges and opportunities getting bigger for our business, and they are a source of competitive advantage in our industry. So how do we inspire them to rise to the challenges and seize the opportunities?

We have a clear vision that I regularly share with my 1,500 colleagues in Guinness Nigeria – to be the most celebrated and respected business in Nigeria and earn iconic status among investors, employees and stakeholders. It is also a powerful source of an aspiration that is translatable into everybody’s
job and a collective catalyst for our people to achieve greatness in everything we do. It creates a culture in which people can take accountability of others success and where teams can align and accelerate performance.

But what does it mean to be iconic? It may mean to many to be the biggest, the highest
performing, most profitable, the market leader. Clearly as a businessman, those measures are
non-negotiable for me, and ones by which our company will assessed both internally and externally. But as the chief executive of a Nigerian business in a Nigeria that is transforming to become a global power, a leading nation with greater visibility on the world’s stage, I envisage our business to stand and define its success beyond this. Iconic stands for greater accountability and responsibility, and generating shared prosperity. But crucially it stands for leadership.

Nigerians make for good leaders. In fact Nigeria is a net exporter of talent within Diageo with many Nigerians holding senior positions within the wider company. I myself have benefitted from developing my leadership and experience in other countries. We invest significantly in our leadership programmes at graduate, mid career and senior level to develop the skills of our future directors and managers and ensure that we have a strong pipeline of talented people that will continue to grow our brands and our company. We also strive to create the best possible conditions and freedom for people to succeed by optimising our systems and processes, developing career development paths attuned to strengths and ambitions, and providing a safe, world -class working environment for our employees and those that work with us.

Indeed essential to the engagement of our people around our vision is through the clear articulation of our corporate values and our broader reputation as a responsible corporate citizen and a contributor to society as a whole. Pride within Guinness Nigeria comes not only from the delivery of great performance and business outcomes, but from the association with an organisation that truly represents people’s values and integrity. It is why we place so much emphasis on our leadership standards in a broader sense, and why we go to great lengths in communicating and engaging around it internally.

Our reputation is also defined by being a force for good, making significant contributions to the communities in which we live and work. In partnership with other like-minded corporate organisations, we want to set the right standards for ethical behaviour and good governance in our operations and relationships.

The private sector in Nigeria has a significant and important role to play in establishing benchmarks and ways of working that encourages enterprise development, upholds good governance and accountability, attracts quality investors and positively impacts our communities. We will play our role, but we will also play it collectively as 1,500 people. This is what we certainly hope defines our legacy as an iconic business and a contributor to sustained growth in Nigeria today.

Yes, you are entitled to your own opinion but you are not entitled to spreading blatant falsehood. Always try to keep the conversation logical and believable by presenting facts (facts are sacred) not silly emotive stuff in service of a failed demarketing agenda. #ORIJINROCKS
Food / Bitter War Between Orijin And Ace Roots by Greycells(m): 10:14am On Mar 09, 2015
With the launch of Ace Roots, a bitter drink, into the Nigeria market, Olamide Bakare who witnessed it asks if this will not signal the beginning of a long awaited marketing battle between owner of the brand, Nigerian Breweries and owner of the market leader, Orijin, Guinness as the former strives to acquire a share in the already crowded bitter market.

Prior to the launch of Orijin into the Nigerian market, little was known about many bitter drinks particularly among some certain class of the society. At best, the proliferations of brands such as Osomo, Alomo bitters among others was largely considered as inferior due to the caliber of people that were attracted to them. But the arrival of Orijin, which many doubted its success, soon changed all that perception with Nigerians and beer drinkers embracing the new bitter drink. Having recorded success in attracting a large portion of beer drinkers, Orijin later launched out with three variants, including ready to drink.

However, if there is anything that continues to amaze many brand analysts, it is the manner in which the brand got acceptability, despite little effort to market the product.

Now that a new product, Ace Roots, has come to give Orijin and other known brands a run for their money in their marketplace, particularly in the area of category in which they play, there are feelings in some quarters, especially among brand handlers that the entrance is an indication that a tough battle may be lying ahead.

Although, some brand analysts believe that the introduction of Ace Roots was designed to challenge Orijin, others are of the view that it was likely going to be a huge, herculean task to fight the market leader for share of its market, considering its dominance at the moment.

One of the commentators who runs a wholly marketing magazine, Marketing Edge, Mr. John Ajayi said it was not enough to say that the product was out to displace the market leader, considering the fact that it takes a product that has a good brand essence or value to give a market leader a big fight. To him, the new product must strive to ensure that there is a clear distinction that would attract its own target audience.

Also speaking, The Managing Director of Kishi lagos, Mr Adeola Adejokun believes the new introduction is a clear knee-jerk reaction to the success of Orijin in the market.

He said, ”To me, I regard the introduction of Ace Roots as a direct response to the soar away success of Orijin, a brand that has enjoyed massive consumer uptake since it hit shelves and bars across the country in 2013. I recall a Businessday publication in which a recent Renaissance Capital (RenCap) research report based on market visits and engagements with bitters vendors and alcohol beverage distributors affirmed Orijin’s best-seller status in 2014. This best-seller status is beyond the bitters and ready-to-drink segments; it encroaches into the beer category where the Orijin brand has created a major upset. Ace Roots is an attempt to recapture market share lost to the rampaging Orijin brand by Nigeria’s largest brewer.

Adejokun noted that despite increased marketing spend by competitors such as Alomo, Orijin still remains top of the mind in the market.

He said, ”You will agree with me that Orijin is not playing in a blue ocean before now. It met a motley brand of bitters such as Alomo, Ogidigba, Pasa Bitters, Koboko etc., in the market before swiftly displacing Alomo to gain market leadership. Consumers will determine the fate of Ace Roots because increased advertising and promotions spend by the promoters of Alomo is yet to impede Orijin’s increasing uptake.

Condemning the tactics deployed by Nigerian Breweries to de-market Orijin through the mouthing of its low sugar content, he says it is at best for consumers to make informed choice.

He said, ”While the entry of Ace Roots is a welcome development as it increases the options available to the consumer in the bitters market, the commentary on Orijin’s sugar content by Nigerian Breweries executives is negative marketing. It is likely that the sustained negative whispering campaign about Orijin having high sugar content which has been largely disregarded by its consumers and adorers emanated from Nigerian Breweries. It is best that the brewer concentrates on promoting its bitters brand without de-marketing the category leader. Or is Nigerian Breweries NAFDAC? I am certain the ingredients as stated on the brand package is statutorily approved by NAFDAC before use by Guinness Nigeria. In response to this negative campaign, I am aware that Guinness Nigeria has stated without equivocation that the sugar content of Orijin is not more than that of other beer brands in the Nigerian market.”

There is something in a name

In marketing, it is said that nothing succeeds unless the name is right. In several situations, the best company, or the best product with good packaging or best marketing in the world did not work owing to the wrong name used.

While some analysts believed that Orijin as a name resonates quickly with consumers because of its local nomenclature, there are those who think the name Ace Roots may constitute a serious setback for the product to make necessary inroads owing to the fact that it appears more foreign and boring.

A global example

Take for instance, Gablinger’ beer which was launched several years ago with award winning TVC that received publicity galore never got to see the light of the day based on the wrong choice of name. Name, according to marketing experts, is not considered in isolation since it is determined in relationship to the categories and its attribute.

Likely competitive edges

However, if there is one thing that seems to be in the favour of Nigerian Breweries as the marketing battle begins, it is the huge war financial chest to engage owners of Orijin brand.

Besides, the low pricing introduced may likely be a game changer as many consumers may be forced to switch allegiance.

Nonetheless, whether Orijin will continue to be market leader remains a matter of time as Nigerian Breweries make a bold step to win the new bitter battle.
