I love USA, I love China, and I hope to love a SUPER SUPER SMART AFRICA someday

Very simplistic way of looking at the issues. If Nigeria could speed up her industrialization we will be looking for some resources as well.

Malaysia which you mentioned has 0% import duty on most goods and yet their industries are flourishing Even Thailand does not have high import duties on goods

All the above countries you mentioned industrialised through exportation. Only South Korea could be accused of being protectionist bit it too industrialised primarily through exportation.

China with it's massive population industrialised through exportation. As least, you do see their products everywhere.

You said that is the difference between rich and poor countries. That is not backed by facts. Where do you get such stats from? Completely flase
These countries industrialized through exportation but you think Nigeria should allow unbridled importation because it provides employment for some people?
I don't think you know what you are talking about.

Malaysia exports far more than they import, does that look like Nigeria?

Guy correct yourself. Dangote has not spent anything near $130bn on that Refinery.
Between 12 and 13 billion dollars. That is what Dangote said.

Is it really true that importers contribute little to the economy?

All one has to do is to visit markets such as Alaba, Computer village, Balogun and many others to see the benefits of imports.

The bustling markets have made thousands wealthy and wealth trickles down. When you visit these stalls, you see lots of people they employ.

Multiply this several all over the country and you realise that millions of people make a living from imports as businessmen, employers and employees

We haven't included transporters, bankers and many other sectors than benefit massively from imports.

I remember when Agangan, the minister of investment during Jonathan's term lifted duty on imported textiles and other goods

There was a visible uptick in demand for warehousing.

For instance, the US found out that for every 1cent reduction in import duty created 3cents of profits.

Imports have been Nigeria's problem but rather exports. Switzerland with only 8m people imports $200b of goods yearly and exports $220b..

Nigeria with 201m people imports about $50b worth of goods. Nigeria needs to focus on non-oil exports.
Multiply this several all over the country and you realise that millions of people make a living from imports as businessmen, employers and employees

This is precisely why Nigeria is not like South Korea or Malaysia or Thailand etc. Theses are countries that were on the same level of development as Nigeria when Nigeria became independent in 1960.
No country can survive on importing everything like we do. The effects are there for everyone to see with millions of people without jobs.
The number of people currently employed in importation are just a tiny fraction of the population. Many more Nigerians could be employed if we produce most of the things we need for ourselves and for exports. This is the difference between the rich countries and the poor countries.

And who told you importation of finished goods does not create employment?
It does, that is why millions of Nigerians are gainfully employed and unemployment is zero in Nigeria. The real rent seekers are the importers who contribute little to the growth of the economy.
Warped logic in a country that depends on importation for almost everything.
BusinessRe: Dangote Refinery: The Making Of Africa's Biggest Private Refinery - Photos by Guestlander: 5:12pm On May 10, 2019
grandstar:
And who told you imports don't create jobs? Who?
Of course, depending on what you import. Raw materials for your company for example. If all you import are finished products you are basically providing employment for some other countries.

Asking government to ban a certain product for your benefit is rent seeking .

The high cost of cement adversely affected the construction and housing industry.

A player in that industry said scores of projects where abandoned due to the high cost of cement.

More jobs were lost than was gained from that ban.
The government did the right thing. Allowing for unregulated importation is basically providing employment for some other countries while Nigerians are left poorer and jobless.
If you say the government doesn't allow anyone to set up a cement factory except for Dangote then you have a point.

Nigerians should not expect much from Dangote refinery....take a look at cement sector the guy monopolized that sector and control the price today. The price of cement never goes down always goes up......Don't expect you buy petrol at rate of #145 per litre be expecting #250 per litre
It is nothing short of amazing that he is doing all of these things with non existence infrastructure. No electricity, bad roads, epileptic train services.
All these things impact negatively on costs of production. The alternative is to import but then we will be providing employment for some other countries while millions are jobless in Nigeria.
We need our government to step up and do their part. Dangote is doing his own part brilliantly.

The country won't do too well.

As a rent seeker, he may promote policies that benefit only him and his interest.

The ban on the importation has led to Nigerians paying very high prices for cement. This is unfair
He is the opposite of a rent seeker. He is creating wealth and he must have made more millionaires than any Nigerian ever.
How then is he a rent seeker?

Such an evasive character is not worthy of even the readers digest author of the week award.
He is absolutely not on the same level as the likes of Omokriminal. The Nobel committee is not swayed by petty sentiments. They award it to the very best.

Why are you Biafrans dumb?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rhc_Kkc-vMY

The Biafrans would need this type of technology to make the type of axle you saw in the pictures. What about the flat sheet needed to make the amoured exterior? You cannibalized it from old transport buses? Use your head and think.

Most of the people shot by the police were not trying to touch them. The police more than the populace needs to learn how to interact with the people.

Nigeria's first cult group which was started by our Yoruba man Soyinka.
Confraternity, not a cult group. Most universities in other parts of the world have them. Not his fault if some people decided to bastardize it.
It is like blaming someone who constructed an highway for the activities of highway robbers.
