One of the earliest demands of Alhaji Tanko Mohammed, the CJN appointed by president Buhari was for Islamic sharia criminal laws be included in Nigeria's Constitution. Tanko further boasted, "after all, we have the numbers to include Sharia criminal laws in the Constitution.
Nigeria's Muslim military dictators who supervised Nigeria's Constitution refused to include Sharia criminal laws in the Constitution, unarguably, because they knew the catastrophe its inclusion could cause in Nigeria of plural religious faiths. But beginning 1999-2001,
12 northern Nigeria' states adopted unconstitutional sharia criminal justice system. Sharia criminal laws include death for blasphemers on the Muslim prophet, stoning women to death for adultery, cutting the hands of thieves, among other harsh punishments.
