There’s more than 250,000 flowering plants on Earth, but until now the only fool-proof way to identify them was to ask your friendly, neighbourhood botanist. A project by an ECU computer science researcher aims to automatically identify plants using high-tech image recognition software. ECU School of Computer and Security Science PhD candidate Oluleye Hezekiah Babatunde has developed a computer program which can identify the species of a plant based on a digital photo of a single leaf. “The program uses a combination of highly complex mathematical algorithms and artificial intelligence to identify leaves based on their colour, shape and texture,” he said. “In testing so far, the program correctly identifies leaves more than 93 per cent of the time.” The software could have extensive applications in the agricultural sector. The same processes used by the software to distinguish between different species could be used to monitor damage to crops by pests, weather and herbicide according to Mr Babatunde. “There’s potential for farmers to use this tool in an app form to get real time updates on their crops with a simple smartphone image,” he said. The project is a finalist in the prestigious Fresh Science program. Fresh Science trains early-career researchers to tell the story of their scientific discoveries to a general audience. Mr Babatunde will present his research at a free event on August 19 at the Brisbane Hotel in Perth. http://www.ecu.edu.au/news/latest-news/2015/08/plant-recognition-software-branches-out Nigerians representing all over ![]() Will update you guys on the presentation Oya, where the Mods at? A 31 year-old man was arrested Friday in connection with the slaying of a woman who was walking with her boyfriend in Hollywood earlier this month when a gunman walked up behind them, aimed a shotgun at her head and pulled the trigger. Ezeoma Obioha, 31, was arrested at 7:15 p.m. on suspicion of murder in the death of Carrie Jean Melvin, said Lt. John Radke of the Los Angeles Police Department. Obioha remains in custody and is being held on $1 million bail. Carrie Jean Melvin and her boyfriend were walking along McCadden Place when she was shot dead the night of July 5. "We have been working hard around the clock on this and we didn't want to draw attention to the leads we developed," Radke said. "This was a terrible crime and it is one of those scenes you'll never forget." Investigators believe that the motive was “financial” and that Obioha was lying in wait for Melvin when she was shot on the night of July 5. He said search warrants were served at Obioha’s home on Friday. Melvin and her boyfriend were walking along McCadden Place near Sunset Boulevard around 10 p.m. on their way to get some food when the shooting occurred, police said. The gunman jumped into a black sedan and drove off. Melvin died at the scene. Melvin’s father called his daughter’s death “incredibly senseless.” Bernie Melvin said she had studied film at UC Santa Cruz and moved to Hollywood about four years ago to break into the entertainment industry. Like many young Angelenos, he said, Carrie Melvin worked several jobs — waitressing, bartending — while pursuing that dream. “She was really kind of spreading her wings,” he said at the time. “It’s an extreme loss to us. She had a lot to give, and her life was cut short.” http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-suspect-arrested-in-shotgun-slaying-in-hollywood-20150724-story.html

When you place a stooge in a position of power who's only "ability" is been able to carry out any order no matter how nonsensical, then you are in for a blame game roundabout. Emeifele is an incompetent person and this isn't a tribal rant, its a statement of fact, people on nairaland and Nigeria as a whole should face reality and stop siding tribally with leaders who add nothing to your personal bottomline. Look at me for example, I supported buhari at the last elections, I thought he was the saviour, do I still think so? Hell no! Because I expected him to hit the ground running! Its not a bad thing to change your mind about a position when you reconsider and find it untenable somewhere down the line, but sticking with a position on ethnic principles Is plain madness. Emeifele is an unmitigated disaster, and it seems pmb/gmb will be too |
