Nairaland General5 Mentalities Nigerian Youths Must Drop To Succeed - Experts.ng by H100(op): 7:25pm On Nov 09, 2019
From https://experts.ng/blog/nigerian-mentalities/
Here is a list of 5 of such mentalities Nigerian youth must drop to succeed:

Written and Shared by Rosemary Egbo

1. The “Starting small takes too much time.” mentality

I have conversed with a lot of Nigerian youth and the mentality of not wanting to start small is common. Some believe that starting small is time-consuming. These youth see the benefits that starting small can bring, and yearn for the fruits without the growth process. Some will rather dodge meaningful things that take patience to grow.

This mentality is why a lot of these youth celebrate and boldly defend cyber fraudsters who choose to cut corners when these fraudsters are apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

The be honest, Nigerian youth know what they want, they know the price to pay to reach their goal, but the issue with the majority is that they are unwilling to start from square one and go the whole nine yards.

Hey, if you feel three years is too long to dedicate to grow a business or career at twenty-seven, remember that you will still be thirty years in three years’ time with little or nothing to show for it. So it is better to be thirty and have a three-year-old business or career than to be thirty wishing you had taken that bold step three years earlier.

The start of anything is not always easy because the start (foundation) is where the strength lies. The foundation of any building takes time and resources, and the more time and resources put into the foundation, the stronger the structure.

2. The “If you’re not talking money be brief.” mentality

A lot of Nigerian youth are not succeeding yet due to this mindset. It is the reason behind their nonchalant attitude towards training, seminars, boot camps and conferences. They think attending these events is a waste of time.

Money doesn’t grow on trees. It comes when we have the right mentalities and consciously make the right efforts towards success. There is a need to look beyond money to see the greater opportunities that lie ahead. But Nigerian youth see any job, discussion or activity that its immediate reward isn’t money as “invalid.”

If I had focused on the money when I started as writing some years ago, I am sure I won’t have had a writing career now. I did a lot of free jobs to hone my writing skills, and I always looked for opportunities to learn and grow. I was rejected by so many editors despite the fact that I offered to write for free.

As a rookie writer, I understood the concept of seedtime and harvest, so I didn’t lose focus of the bigger picture I had in mind. Am I still writing for free today? No, because I have paid my dues, and I’m reaping the harvest now.

The ‘money-love’ is seriously stagnating a lot of vibrant youth.

3. “Tech is for men” Mindset

Many young Nigerian ladies aspire to become young entrepreneurs in the youth-dominated tech industry in Nigeria but decided to let go of their dreams because of the mentality that the tech industry is male-dominated.

The thought of what family and friends might say about their supposed career choice kept them from living a life they are passionate about.

Some years ago, I approached a glazier to teach me glaziery, but he refused my apprenticeship because he believed glaziery was for men.

Many Nigerian youths share this mindset and it is one of the reasons why we have few women making marks in the Nigerian tech industry.

4. The “If it’s Nigerian, it’s substandard.” mindset

Recently, Innoson Motors (Nigeria’s first automobile manufacturer), trended on social media platforms for the 25 million Naira car prize won by the winner of season 4 of Big Brother Naija.

Some youth took to social media to belittle the vehicle because it wasn’t a foreign brand. How can our manufacturing industry grow if youths have such a mentality?

The mentality that a locally produced product is substandard has crippled many businesses and led to depression among local manufacturers. Some of these Nigerian youth would rather promote foreign products at the expense of our own products. They spend their savings patronizing foreign companies instead of buying locally made products.

We need to drop this mentality if we must grow. The result of emancipating our thoughts from such mentalities would subsequently bring in the era of the much-needed growth in the Nigerian entrepreneurial ecosystem.

5. The “Salary is the money they pay you to forget your dreams” mindset

This mindset is common among young corporate workers and entrepreneurs. I wonder how such an untrue sentiment became viral in the first place. Some young Nigerian employees in the corporate sector rarely put in their best because they believe they are forgetting their dreams by working for someone.

And this is the reason many of them run out of paid employment and jump into entrepreneurship without knowing what entrepreneurship entails.

Everyone can’t be an entrepreneur and not everyone can be in the corporate world either, so I don’t know where such a mindset came from.

We all have our role to play in making the world a better place, and the most important thing is identifying your strength and positively utilize it.

Talking down a person for choosing to be in the corporate world doesn’t make any sense. I’m an entrepreneur, but I think it is wrong to see someone as less for choosing where to be legally productive.

A lot of Nigerian youth must re-evaluate their mentalities regarding so many things. Our mind is the engine of our life, and it does not function optimally when clogged with the wrong mindsets.

So, what is your thought on the author’s position on Nigerian youths and their success mindset? Unfortunately, these mindsets spread across sub-Saharan Africa, and it is not limited to Lagos or Nigeria. It affects millions of people.

Nairaland GeneralThe Mentality For Moving On From Your Demoralizing Past by H100(op): 8:17am On Oct 29, 2019
A great future does not require a great past, It doesn't at all! it's a good idea to shut the door lock it and leave it, Just as long as you remember why you locked it. Every single day is a gateway to our future and a better tomorrow can happen on any of these days because Life's easier and nicer when you let go of the past and look to the future. Lesson enough, those that have struggled in life are the most resilient people. If you can turn around things... make adversaries of the past as opportunities. It's an effective approach still.

We tend to get stuck in whatever past we are due to the social surrounding and how they communicate with us. We somehow forget that we are not today what we once were yesterday, You can't change your past but you can shape your future with past experiences. Sometimes we focus on future too much and lose the importance of momentum. We must learn to better keep the balance between right now and future otherwise it will become a putting off entirely.

People are allowed to have negative thoughts, feel discouraged, have bad attitudes, and ill thoughts too when they are rejected by anyone or anything due to a past error or experience. It's human nature and always expected. So, don't assume the best case scenario alone, dispel the negative, take the wipe and move into a positive mental space regardless. Most often the negative views are temporary or situational and can be fixed easily but it takes someone to genuinely care by asking how to fix it.

No doubts, The past is an important ingredient to your future. However, do not be limited by the realities of it... You can make lemonades out of lemons, learn from that past, devote full strength and concentrate on the future with full attention. Our past is relevant but does not equal our future. It's not our conditions or circumstances that determines our destiny, it's our decisions which come from our beliefs.

Sometimes, pictures of the bad period from our past moment will appear to drag the beautiful prospects ahead of you to the mud. The truth is, we can change ourselves from bad to good but in whatever we do, it wont change or delete the errors from our lives. There's always a memory for us and others whether its good or bad. Unfortunately, this is a 'bad news world' where most probably people tend to forget our good side more,  but will remember our bad times. Painfully, we cannot change every human's mentality but the great thing about the past is that it shows you what not to bring into your future.

If we have a positive attitude, we have joy and can grow, becoming stronger. Now, a positive attitude doesn’t mean we are happy when we lose our job, it just means that we rely on God instead of ourselves to move forward. Be strong and courageous today! Take it in stride and be grateful for the things you do have!

Every day is a great opportunity where you get to learn something. Life is a process of self discovery and there is nothing right or wrong in it. When your mind is full and heart is empty, you are forced. When your mind is empty and heart is full, you allow the truth to come into being. It is there as sudden as the sunlight and so pure as the night.

CrimeWhat Is The Difference Between Evidence And Proof? by H100(op):
The terms “evidence” and “proof ” are often used in public discussion and debate as if these terms were interchangeable or synonymous, but such a usage is ambiguous and contributes to much confusion and misunderstanding.

The following clarification is offered in the interest of facilitating public discussion and debate. I will endeavor to clarify the meanings of – and the differences between – “evidence” and “proof” as these terms are used in Epistemology, the field of Philosophy which studies knowledge, and in which the precision of language can be quite important.

Evidence” is a term applicable to the physical world of our senses, what might be called “the world of empirical sensory perception.” This is the natural world studied by natural or empirical science.
Proof” is a term applicable to the world of thought untrammeled by the senses, what might be called “the world of pure concepts (or ideas).” This is the eidetic world studied in pure (as opposed to applied) mathematics and logic.

There are certain very general criteria which something proposed as evidence or proof must meet. These criteria are shown below:

Evidence is:

1. empirical
2. public (among those with normal senses)
3. repeatable
4. probable

Proof is:

1. conceptual
2. public (among those who speak a particular language)
3. repeatable
4. conclusive

Proof is (or can be) conclusive in the sense that its results are certain, beyond any possible doubt; however, this certainty is arguably a product of the fact that propositions in pure logic and pure mathematics are tautological (if true)* and contradictory (if false). Hence, “proofs” tell us nothing about the physical or empirical world in which we live; only evidence can do that, and truth derived from evidence is always only probable.

Properly credential authority can take the place of item #1 in either case, because properly credentialed authorities have performed the necessary observations or solved the requisite equations; hence, the importance of education. That’s how one becomes familiar with properly credentialed authorities, and becomes one oneself.

Note that tautologous statements are logically vacuous and tell us nothing about the world. An example of a tautology would be, “It is raining or it is not raining.”

This statement is true regardless of the weather, and it conveys no information about whether or not it will be necessary to carry an umbrella.

FamilyWhat Inspiration Do You Get From Your Childhood Days? by H100(op): 9:45am On Oct 25, 2019
Many adults voice their disappointment about their life, expressing nostalgia for their childhood care free days. Childhood is the time of life when all of us spend days trying, falling and standing stronger, learning something, at school, at home, on the street, and having intense emotions because of it. Fear, shyness, excitement, heart breaking disappointments and pure joy.

I draw so much from the toddler stage - Falling and trying to stand up again not minding if i will fall again.

I learned to stand up quick every time i fall or at worst keep trying my best. You must make mistakes and fall in order to learn to stand firm. You can only watch so many videos and listen to so many people talk perfection before you take the leap and try for yourself but that doesn't take out the probability of falling down to zero. We all didn't learn how to talk or walk in a day. Just because you fall doesn't mean you fail. It just gives you the opportunity to dust your knees, check for blood, then keep going.

And i think that, if more people carried that child like intense approach to their adult life, and explored, tried and tried again just like children do, more people could live a full filling life. Maybe that is how we are meant to live, and most of us are being sedated and ignore the urge, and are not so happy and satisfied because of same childhood. this is the thought i have shared on my blog

EventsHow Do You Feel When A Billionaire Speaker Makes Very Short Speech At An Event? by H100(op): 9:26pm On Oct 23, 2019
Personal Experience

Last week, someone in my family informed me that an extremely well-known billionaire (who will not be named) was going to be in town for a speaking event - and my family member had tickets. I remember thinking: "How cool is this? I always see them on TV! It will be amazing to see them speak in person!" The event was marketed towards people seeking success, and it seemed like it was going to be a motivational/uplifting occasion.

The day of the event came and it was a full house. We were lucky and got there early - we were sitting in the second row! The energy was palpable and I kept thinking to myself, this is going to be great. The time finally came. The host came out, introduced himself, gave some background on his success, and tied in how he works with the billionaire who will not be named. I will say this host was the epitome of what a speaker should be: high-energy, and intriguing. It made me even more excited.

The grand moment arrived, Billionaire stepped out onto the stage and I could not believe it. He was right. there. Spoke of his rags to riches story, which I will say is truly inspiring. He told stories. Made us laugh. And exited the stage after about 10 minutes.

I quickly began to grow disappointed, realizing most of this event will be with other keynote speakers - none of which I (or my family member) was familiar with. However, I wanted to give these speakers a fair chance. Maybe they'd say something that was of value. Maybe there was at least one golden nugget they could give me. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Most of this event came to be a real estate seminar, to put it simply. No disrespect to anyone in real estate, but I have zero interest in making a career of it. Sparing you all the frustrating and boring details, this seminar came off as an awful pitch for a (pricey) 3-day course on real estate. I thought to myself: "You have got to be kidding me".

My family member and I ended up walking out of the event, as we realized this was not going to be what we expected. It did make for an interesting conversation on the ride back home.

This person is a billionaire. They are highly-respected and yes, famous. Why would they feel the need to prey on people by selling them this perfect image? That if they attend this 3-day course, they WILL be able to purchase real estate and they WILL make lots of money from it. This Billionaire has money - why feel the need to continue feeding his wallet in such a seedy manner?

I felt like a fool. The event had been marketed in such a way that was 100% misleading. It led me to wonder why people who reach Billionaire level come to this? If I was someone with success of that magnitude and had the platform to reach such a large number of people, I wouldn't want to sell fake dreams. I'd use it to truly, genuinely inspire people. Give them that small push they may just need. No fluff, no nonsense. No "classes" or seminars. Just a straight-forward, real conversation. Maybe a story I share or something I say could inspire someone to go out and do it.

I don't know if I will ever have that kind of reach, but I'd like to think that if I did, I wouldn't lose myself or my integrity.

Nairaland General3 Simple Steps To Stop Thinking Negative Thoughts by H100(op): 6:25pm On Oct 22, 2019
You can't stop negative thoughts by just wishing they would go away, pushing against them, or feeling bad about having negative thoughts. Any focus on negative thoughts gives energy to them and increases them! Your mind has to be set on positive thoughts and good thoughts because then you're giving energy to that.

There're basically 3 steps on how to stop thinking negative thoughts and change someone's negative behaviors

1 - Take responsibility for your thoughts and actions.
2 - List negative things in your life and begin to change them.
3 - Forgive yourself and others.

It is clear that personality traits are formed by our past experiences.

Energy flows where attention goes. The more you focus on the negative things that have happened in your life, the more you relinquish your power to those things. Learn how you can start to become aware of negative thought patterns and begin to focus your attention on things that are important to you.

"When you change your energy, you change your life." Fear isn’t what is keeping you down, your mind is. When we’re trapped in fear and don’t take action, it can sound something like this:

What if people make fun of me?
What if I’m rejected?
What if I lose respect?
What if I’m not good enough?

What if ____________? (followed by any negative statement)

What if I put myself out there and fall flat on my face, everyone thinks my idea is stupid and turns against me, I become so depressed that I lose my job, my family decides I’m too pathetic to live with and leaves me, I lose my home and end up living on the street, ALONE! It sounds silly, right? However, you might be surprised just how far our minds will go to keep our love, safety, and belonging intact. I’m being facetious here only to prove a point, not to make light of your fears. Fear is often just poor management of the mind.

Write out your worst-case scenario.

Next, explore your thoughts in a different way.

What if I don’t lose anything but gain the things I really want?
What if the process teaches me I’m stronger and more capable than I thought?
What if I inspire people to take their own action steps towards their dreams?
What if it turns out great?

Now that your mind is a bit calmer, and feels safer, take some action!

According to professional speaker and author, Tony Robbins, it’s the getting ready to change that takes time. In the end there’s a single instant when the change occurs.

CareerRe: Don't Fall For The Pressure, Everyone Has A Different Timeline by H100(op): 12:59pm On Oct 22, 2019
MountainView:
He said one can't achieve everything in life, It's not true Bro

You may say here in Naija, but over there in the western world everything is already set for you, just the right mindset.

So, don't say you can't achieve everything
You are not going to accomplish everything in your life:

A) as you’ve always planned and
B) at the same pace as everyone around you.
CareerDon't Fall For The Pressure, Everyone Has A Different Timeline by H100(op): 10:19pm On Oct 21, 2019
Everyone has a Different Timeline

I remember in my early days in UNIZIK I was frequently antsy to get somewhere. When will I finally graduate after my certificate was withheld for years in FCE(T) Umunze after NCE to starting afresh in UNIZIK (BSc) ? Get that dream job? When will I meet “the one”? Be where I want to be? To make matters worse, with this thing called social media, it’s real easy to feel like you are behind everyone else.

So and so got their Master’s degree! Eye roll.
So and so got promoted to Manager! Eye roll.
So and so got engaged! Eye roll.
Yes, this was me. And I know some of you probably have done this or currently do.

I’m going to tell you something from experience and it was something I did not understand until several years later. You are not going to accomplish everything in your life:

A) as you’ve always planned and
B) at the same pace as everyone around you.

I’ve always been a “planner”. I knew what career I wanted by the time I was 5 (and never changed my mind) and thought I’d reach certain milestones at specific points in my life. Reality ultimately smacked me hard in the face. That is just not how life works. None of it turned out as planned.

Years later, even when I found myself starting to get “somewhere”, I grew impatient. I was constantly seeking the next thing. Eventually, I was frustrated because I saw others getting things before me. This is the cold, hard truth: there is no defined timeline for success. Some people step into a company and grow exponentially in a seemingly short amount of time, while others…. Take a little longer. And that is 100% okay. You could see other great inspiring stories on my blog

Your value does not diminish just because you are not exactly where you want to be. Stop focusing on what others are doing and focus on YOU. What are you doing today, right now, to get to where you want to be? I can’t guarantee you when you will get somewhere, but I guarantee you will get somewhere if you keep persevering. Yes, there are a lot of unknowns in life… and when you will get the things you want is one of those unknowns. It’s all a part of the adventure of life. And take it from me, it is the unknowns along with years of hard work and sacrifice that will make you appreciate things so much more when you do have them.

CareerBetween Innoson, The Car Maker And Farouq Osuolale, The Logo Maker by H100(op): 11:32am On Oct 19, 2019
NB. This Writeup belongs entirely to Funso Williams

You don't need to wait to pitch your business idea.

You must have heard of Farouq Osuolale University of Ibadan student, who redesigned the Innoson vehicle Logo. He's like every other struggling designers out there, but he is smart, he made use of the right channel to get his idea to out.

Many businesses won't call you to pitch your idea to them, they might not even know they need that idea of yours until they see it.

It's a win win for both Farouq and Innoson. Innoson is using this as a marketing strategy to show Nigerians they are supporting Nigerian talents which in turn communicates to Nigerians the need to patronize Innoson (it's Naija made). Farouq on the other hand is getting a career breakthrough.
The Logo is a modern classic logo which is well structured and definitive, it embodied every minute details of what the company stands for.

As a Brand Designer it is very important to note that presentation matters in every Design. If Farouq had displayed this logo in a flat 2D version it might not go viral or get the recognition.

In conclusion, nobody is ready to push or support if they don't see the drive. Today's businesses won't sit down with many to hear your business ideas, they want to see what you're capable of, not hear it. Congratulations to Farouq Osuolale

CareerPractical Advice On How To Start And Maintain A Startup by H100(op):
Passion is not something you find in life; it’s something you do. When you want to find the passion and inner strength needed to change your situation, you have to force yourself to step forward whether it's on how to start a startup or otherwise

Many of us are still hopelessly trying to “find our passion”— something we believe will ultimately lead us closer to happiness, success, or the life situation we ultimately want. And we say “hopelessly” primarily because passion can’t really be found.

When we say we’re trying to find our passion, it implies that our passion is somehow hiding behind a tree or under a rock somewhere. But that’s far from the truth. The truth is, our passion comes from doing things right. If you’re waiting to somehow “find your passion” somewhere outside yourself, so you finally have a reason to put your whole heart and soul into your life and the changes you need to make. You’ll likely be waiting around for an eternity.

On the other hand, if you’re tired of waiting, and you’d rather live more passionately starting today and experience small positive changes, it’s time to proactively inject passion into the very next thing you do. Think about it: Check out the referenced blog to see how to develop yourself and brace up for the task but first:

Questions to ask yourself

When was the last time you sat down and had a conversation with someone nearby, with zero distractions and 100 percent focus?
Do you remember the last time you exercised and put every bit of effort you could muster into it?
When was the last time you truly tried—truly tried—to do your very best?

Like most of us, you’re likely putting a halfhearted effort into most of the things you do on a daily basis.

Because you’re still waiting. You’re still waiting to “find” something to be passionate about—some magical reason to step into the life you want to create for yourself. But you need to do the exact opposite!

The challenge of funds when deliberating on how to start a startup

A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for. Get that Idea off your skull and Start

Many people think that money and a good idea is all it takes to create a successful business. Money helps, but the lack of it is not the reason for a business to succeed or fail otherwise entrepreneurs with deep pockets or startups that were flushed with funds or cash would never have failed.

It does help to have a good idea and money in the bank while starting a business, but realistically the most important thing is good timing.

Let’s imagine a scenario where you have a theoretically brilliant business idea, a robust business model, a remarkable team, and adequate funding to ensure a successful business venture. But if your big idea, product, or service is ahead of its time or comes too early and consumers aren’t ready for it. They won’t easily accept your product or service.

Alternatively, If your big idea, product, or service is behind the times or comes too late in a highly competitive market, you will struggle to make it a profitable business.

While the idea, business model, funding, and the team running the business are important factors responsible for startup success. The greatest make-or-break point in a startup’s development is: “Good Timing.”

Remember good timing is everything. If you can get your timing right, you can afford to get a few things wrong.

Ignore the hype of the startups that you see in the press when you search on how to start a startup or related queries on successful businesses and startups. Mostly, it’s a pack of lies. Half of these startups will be dead in a year. So, focus on building your business so you can be the one left standing.

A lot of young startup founders are ecstatic. Feel like they have the best idea in the world. Feel like they have the next big billion dollar product.T end to romanticize their product. They focus too much on its features and functionalities. They put all the bells and whistles because they think that would entice customers.

But more often than not, they are wrong.

Even if you have the best idea in the world, if it doesn't meet the customer needs, then it won't sell. If your product doesn't solve customer pain points, then you won't gain traction. And no big investor will back you up.

When you're beginning a startup, no one tells you to think about your customers yet. But you should. As early as having that great idea, you have to sell it immediately.

Successful startups know that formula. For you to be successful, it has to combine user/customer research with building your product. Customers must have an input to your product at every step of the way.

As a startup founder, you must be able to handle criticisms to propel a successful business. Don't just look for positive reinforcements. Embrace negative feedback. But don't sulk. Take that feedback and make the necessary changes. Adapt the ideas of your customers.

When you prioritize the insights of your customers, then you have a better chance to survive (or possibly, to succeed) in the highly competitive market that we have today.

Weird – Unique

Mindful communication is important for effective team work, Here are phrases that seem positive but sounds as bad business power words:
No problem – Definitely
No worries – My pleasure
Can’t complain – Doing great, thank you

Phrases focused on complaints rather than the solution:

I’m exhausted – I need to rest
I forgot – I’ll make sure to set a reminder

Words with negative connotations. Replace the phrase by a solution-oriented sentence:

Unfortunately
Impossible
Problems

Example: Unfortunately, it is impossible to send you the report now because of the problems we have with our analytics team. – Can we send the report by Friday so that we have time to follow up with the analytics team?

I miss you – I’m looking forward to seeing you
I missed you – It’s so great to see you!
Negative orders replaced by suggestion with a clear reasoning
Don’t tell me excuses – I like it when you are responsible
No… – I suggest you rather…, because…

Words indicating a fixed mindset, and not so good business power words and phrases:

I’m not good at this – I am not there yet. What can I do to get there?
I will never be that smart. – I will learn how to do this.
My friend can do it, not me. – I will learn from my friend.

Onegoodhead.com has been following Zulfat Suara after this post 'Meet Zulfat Suara - First Muslim Set To Be Elected In Tennessee US" on August 9 here on NL

Onegoodhead in the post reported that she contested for one of the five Nashville Metro Council advanced seats in Tennessee on August 1 2019, Suara is also running in the general runoff election on September 12, 2019, after advancing from the general election on August 1

ZULFAT SUARA biography can now be spiced with ‘member of the Nashville City Council’, member of the Tennessee Women’s Political Caucus and the American Muslim Advisory Council, The Election Board after her victory confirmed her as the first Muslim lawmaker elected to the Metro Nashville Council.

Excited Zulfat Suara after her victory For the Metro Council at Large reacting to her history-making win, saying she’s proud of her diverse support-base which she takes as a mandate for the council to help create a “NASHVILLE FOR ALL”

Suara finished second in the general election, falling just short of avoiding this runoff. She said she hopes her election sends a message of unity to the city and to the country.

Popular opinion suggest that Cities are known to have a different culture than the rest of the state, and even country. They are more educated, diverse, and therefore more tolerant of each other. and here is a testimony from a voter.

“I voted for her because she is a CPA – good person to have around when budgets are being prepared- and because she cares about our schools, and they need caring about. I am glad she won and hope she serves us well on the Council. You folks that are freaking out about her religion have much to learn.”

Health"We Do A Lot To Prepare This Empty Bed" by H100(op):
I leaned over you as you we tried to pump life back into your soul again.
The look in your eyes was indicative that you were already gone, but we tried against the reaper to win.

Your family wept and told us to keep trying, they didn’t want to let you leave.
So we continued on, with all of us in a silent conversation with the others knowing it wasn’t something we could achieve.

Finally, after rounds and rounds of medications, shocks, and pumping so hard on your chest, we have sweat pouring down our faces.
The family said, “Please quit, that’s enough.” Tears filled my eyes as I tried to hide it by staring at my shoelaces.

They said goodbye to you and we took the appropriate steps to clean you up, call the funeral home, and prepare for them to pick you up in the middle of the night.
Your eyes were glazed over and shiny, as if the next thing you saw was what we all dream of …. that mysterious light.

I wondered if you had been a teacher, a pastor, a truck driver, or maybe you worked on cars for a living.
I hoped you met your maker with all the love you deserved and feeling of forgiving.

I try to remember you were someone’s dad, husband, brother, son, and friend.
It hurts me to know you were surrounded by strangers in the end.

But those strangers would give anything to bring you back to how you were before you met us in this place.
They lovingly take care of every gender, ethnicity, color, and every race.

We watch the life leave your body and go to a place none of us know and understand.
We did everything in our power to keep you alive and well and heal you with our hands.

We then eat lunch, we laugh and play, as if nothing ever happened, and we try to prepare ahead.
For the next soul to come in who needs us, the next soul to fill “the empty bed”

Next time, you wonder why you come across nurses with that look that is always on their face and in their eyes.
It’s because we give up everything to save you and lose a little of ourselves every time we lose one of you guys.
