Hello everyone, here is my 2cents, i am currently leaving in dubai (working), and i read the article and started discussing it with my collegues who are (westerners), thou some of the points highlighted are TRUE about the indigenes, But the story is DUBAI was colonized (permit me to use that word) by the British and it hurts the BRITISH so much that the city is GROWING FASTER than they would ever have imagine, thats ONE OF THE MAJOR reason for the BEEF!!
I have lived in the UK before also, a BRITISH is highly respected in this country that it annoys every other nationality, there are other forums here in dubai that complains about the extra treatment being given to the BRITISH, In dubai or UAE generally if you are a British/English (meaning having a British passport) you get a job ASAP! I mean as fast as you can ever dream of INRESPECTIVE of your qualification, check most recruiting websites here they specifically mention " British and prolly other westerners" as far as you are from this countries, your qualification doesnt matter one bit.
I am just trying to point out the extra treatment this so call British, westerners get here,
And their life styles here is somthign they would NEVER DREAM of having in the UK, so when ever they seems not to get their way, they start throwing tantrums, like currently there is a brit lad, that is sleeping on the streets and the whole papers are on about it, but the same asians (INDIANS) that this same article wa strying to portray as being poor, sad, helpless come here via agencies and this agencies charge the company a minimum of 500dollars per worker, so the little money being paid to the workers is from the agencies and must i say the AGENCIES are Indians like them.
I am not saying the country is good, or whatever but compared to other few countries i have worked, in teams of standard of living its about the BEST!

Its all media, i live and work in dubai and i have been in the middle east for quite sometime now, yes qatar is about the best in the middle east for now, but the news about dubai in crisis is more of media, the recession really hit alot of people and there was lots of job losses but now things are really picking up, maybe not so fast but they are, by Dec 2009 (couple of days) banks would start issuing loans again, yea maybe of abit stiffer levels like more of the middle class income earner unlike before where anybdy and anyone can get a ln, and speculations are by March 2010 things would pick up much better,
Am not saying Dubai isnt in debts dnt get me wrong, but what ay saying is that the worst is kinda over now, so its on its was to slow recovery,
About people abadoning their cars and all that, that was late last year and ealry this year, for now not one single car has been found in the airport been abadoned,

The TRUTH of the matter is that the AD was a very in-appropriate one,
We all might not be able to understand the STIGMA of this AD, but for the ones that leave outside the  country you might understand abit of it,
When you are in NIJA the majority of the people around you are Nijas so it doesnt matter,
I might have to bow my head in shame when i get to work and a collegue of mine (WHOE MIGHT BE WHITE SKINNED OR FROM A DIFF COUNTRY) is asking me if i had seen the sony AD, or if i wanted a SONY GIFT,
The AD is very very offensive and i must say Nijas are BABIESIN SCAMMING, there are a whole loads of countires out there that do better in hacking than the best SCAMMER in Nija,
Recently i had my yahoo email hacked just because i went to use to cafe nearby the salon i was in and the hacker not only kep checkin my emails but also changed my password and i no longer have access to the email i have been using for almost 8years,
I know Nijas sebd emails and what not but d, n!!! we are not the only country i bet some of you know one of the Asian countries are gurus in this thing,
Recently i had an ASSUIE ask me why i should complain about my email been hacked that i am a Nigerian i should be used to it, the good thing was that i HAVE IT BACK TO HIM HOT,

this is quite a very funny thread, let me explain what i think, some of the people on this forum eithe dnt live in 9ja, and some do, when u dnt live in 9ja it might be a challenge when pther nationalities have to pronounce your name,
I have lived in diffrent countries, before i came to my present destination , i went for a job interview, which i got the offer // The lady that was interviewing me, (very vast and expereinced in her field i must say) and a canadian, asked me what my name was, i told her OLUWASEYI, but i had an english name , which sounds quite english, but i dnt use it only on my official cards e.t.c, and she was so excited because she handt heard such before and it was a panel interview so i had a polish also on the panel and they asked me what the meaning was and i told them, you wouldnt belive that un until now she calls me that name, even thou she doesnt pronouce it well, i got the job and i was the only balck and of course nija, but all the other nationalites (and there quite alot of them in that particular organisation) called me OL, , even thou when they try to start bitting their tougue and am like just call me Tr, (my english name ) but they still wanna know the meaning of my name,
So i think it depends on which side you are coming from, in 9ja its normal but outside the country its abit diffficult for them to pronouce and if u dnt hv an English name just shorten the name, there are many smart ways to do that,

Anyway i dnt live in Nija and i have been doing some research ,
I have gotten quotes from 2 places on the island, Federal Palace hotel is 600k, feeding/dinner buffet is 5,500 per person and beverages(non-alcoholic) is 2500 per person, And they said they dnt use the garden again, because that was what i really wanted they said they use their INDEPENDENCE BALLROOM only for occassions,
Then Protea hotel (Oakwood) very close to chevron, very nice atmosphere really, quotes as follows, 180k for the ball room(VERY FAIR PRICE I GUESS) and 4,400 per person for a dinner buffet,
So wedding for nija expensive no be small,
