Guy...to get the Igbo variant of Bini names starting with E,just change it to I
For example eweka is iweka in Igbo, esama is isama though it doesn't apply in all cases.
We are not looking at names after mixing with yorubas took place but before and the implications.

We have towns with names like Okoro in Edo state, Igueze and Co. How did that come about except through interaction.

Thanks for that very valid contribution. The first Oba of Benin was an Igbo man from Nri.

Just like Nigeria, the First President was an Igbo Man.

But why do most Anioma towns and settlements have a very different ettlement pattern from that of Igbo towns and villages in the SE.
Checking from Google maps, most Anioma places are compact and nucleated like Benin and Yoruba towns, unlike SE towns that are just like connected string of houses built along road paths.
Densely populated.

Let me go further and explain.

The Nri people pushed west in search of land and some pushed north. Others went south.

The Nri people got to their location from the East of Africa, some will say Israel.

In the west they met the yoruba and produced the Bini, from this association another migration south started to present day Bayelsa(Urhobo and Ijaw) and up North to present day Kogi(Esan and Ebira).

The Igalas and Idomas are products of a further mix with the igbos that migrated North.

Anyway, if you have bothered to read any of the books about Bini history, there wouldn't have been any need to ask me what Eweka means, because it it clearly stated in Bini history.
Answer the question and stop all this diversion tactics. Wat does Eweka mean in Bini?

would have made more sense if you had said Iweka instead of Emeka like Eweka Street in Onitsha was changed to Iweka Street
Either way, Iweka and Emeka are igbo words, the question is wat type of coincidence is it that the first Oba of Benin name is Eweka and not the usual urhuokhokhor?

I dispute the Nri bit. Very much. Ogboli-Issele may have some connections with Nri. But Issele people will disagree strongly and tell you all of Issele, including Ogboli-Issele is from Benin. Anybody saying Issele is of Nri origin is definitely not from Issele or even Anioma.

Again, Wikipedia can never be a reliable source. If i want I can go now and edit Wikipedia so that it will read that Kano was founded by the Japanese.
If this is ur assertion then it is probable that Benin was established by the Aniomas and the aborigines of Bini were Igbos from Nri that migrated west.

They met other tribes (yorubas) mixed and created the lingua franca u call bini.

My guess is that an Igbo woman gave birth to the Binis as is the case with the Igalas. Mind u Igbo men also fathered some of them too.

This is probable given that similar circumstances exist in Rivers with the Ikwere.

U have not yet answered wat Eweka means in Bini language.

Known King/Emperor (Oba)
• 1180–1246 Eweka I [1]
• 1440–1473 Ewuare (1440–1473) would expand the city-state to an empire
Ovonramwen (exile 1897)
• 1978–2016 Erediauwa I (post-imperial)
• 2016- Ewuare II (post-imperial)

U will also notice that the time frame of Eweka reign is wrong becos of the gap between his reign and that of Ewuare 1440-1473.

Ewuare was credited with building the City of Benin and expansion of the empire both, North, East, West and South.

Clearly after his reign, the British showed up and it was no longer business as usual. Ovonramwen had to go into Exile. grin

That was the End of the Benin expansion program.

On wikipedia, the first Oba name is registered as Eweka

Cant help but notice that the name is similar to the Igbo name called Emeka.

Wat does Eweka mean in Bini, does anybody know?

Could the name be a corrupt version for the igbo name Emeka?

Could igbos from Nri have founded the bini kingdom and due to mixing with yorubas created the bini dialect?

There are different variants of Agbor origin. The ogele version , the Ominijie version and the Agbon version. They are all correct. These migrations happened at different times and the Agbon's was the most recent of them all.
We cannot write or rewrite history on nairaland and oral history are hearsay, hence not credible. however wat we can work with are evidence and the facts on ground.

First a credible timeline has to be placed on the Benin Kingdom.

Second, y did Benin not expand into Anioma wen their were no natural barrier, but the Nri Kingdom was able to overcome the River Niger to settle in Anioma?

Thirdly, Y is the Benin linguistic cultural sphere limited to Bini in Edo? Are their other groups that speak similar language to Bini as we have with igbos and yorubas?

Answer these three questions first.

Yes, this is what I've been saying all along. I don't believe that any Igbo person originates from the West but many migrated there probably for trade and lived under the Benin Empire. I believe that many of the people in Anioma, Onitsha, Ogbaru etc are the descendants of these people.

This is Wikipedia. Probably edited just a few minutes ago by a southeasterner. No Issele indigene will say his people came from Nri. None.
That is highly unlikely, the source that i was going to refer u to was not credible, neither is wikipedia but at least we get some basics from wikipedia.

Do u dispute these facts? if u do then specify the particular one that u dispute.

The community of Issele Ukwu is related to Kingdom of Nri.

Oral traditions said that the founders of Issele Ukwu and the people of Nri came from the same source.[1]

Issele Ukwu is part of the ethnic territory of the Igbo people.

The area is growing with immigrant communities of Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko, Ijaw, Hausa and Yoruba people .

I never said that the Igbos weren't in the East before the Anioma people. I said that my ancestors once lived under the Benin Empire, which they did. I agree with the theory of reverse migration; the Igbos were gradually migrating West but something caused them to go back to the East. It's the theory that makes the most sense to me but it's not concrete.
Nice to have u finally contributing to the board.

Igbos are from the east always never from the west. Igbos settled in the west and traded with the East and other western tribes.

In the 15th century, the western igbo fell to the Benin Empire, during an attempted expansion of the kingdom.

This soon ended after a bitter confrontation with the British and Aniomas

The Benin empire relegated to the shores of the South west.

Whether everybody in Anioma are from Nri is highly unlikely, but the majority are from Nri.

Did people from the other western tribe end up across the Niger in places like Onitsha and Ogbaru, most likely.

COMMON SENSE IS NOT COMMON, THIS IS WAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING.

I HOPE NGOZI123 IS STILL FOLLOWING.

BINI ONLY HAPPENED AFTER THE COLONIALIST ARRIVED IN THE 15TH CENTURY. ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG CONFIRMS IGBO WERE IN THE EAST BEFORE ANIOMA. THE EXPANSION TO PRESENT DAY ANIOMA WAS AT THE HEIGHT OF NRI KINGDOM.

It has its own post office and is served by the nearby new Asaba International

This same guy was the one saying how Bini city was ruled by Igbo kings called ogisos and Ile Ife was ruled by Igbo kings called ogene. If this people can go as far as claiming Bini and Ile Ife, why wouldn't they claim Anioma that's a stone throw from them? Continue. Nobody is taking you serious anymore.

Its clear you're one of the descendants of the Bini army the Anioma resistance crushed in the great Ubulu war of 1755 and scattered their remnants all over Anioma. Every Anioma town from agbor in the West to onicha in the East to abo in the South all sent reinforcements to help defend Ubulu Ukwu during that Bini war of aggression. The only town that did not was Isele Ukwu.
You Edo descendants are recent settlers to Anioma... So when issues concerning Anioma are raised,it's pertinent that you allow the aborigines make the decision. As for your stance on Biāfra I'd appreciate that bkos outside the Igbo tag, Biāfra is another identity common to all "bia" speakers undecided
This is the point, i was making to Ngozi123. They have migrants from Bini amongst them. Similarly in Bini, u will find western igbo migrants from Anioma. Migration is as old as mankind.

No single Anioma person has the right to speak for the whole Anioma because Anioma is divided on this Igbo thing. The relationship and affinity Anioma has with Bini spans into millenium and you can't just wish that away. throw away Bini shit? you must be kidding. and you even agreed there are some Bini shit?

As for Biafra, there is difference between Biafra and Igbo. Even some Yorubas fought for Biafra, so tell me why Anioma's case is different? I am not Igbo but if war should break up in Nigeria and I were a soldier, I will fight for Biafra. I want Biafra but this doesn't mean I should throw away my Bini heritage.
Wen u put it like that we are finally making progress.

I respect everybody culture and understand that certain western igbos share in the bini heritage.

It is so easy 4 people to share a common believe but due to mis understanding draw swords.

Biafra is not about igbo but changing the present system were the north take all and murder everybody else, supported by afonja.

It is not cultural but institutional. Every culture and language will be celebrated and protected under Biafra constitution.

Every ethnic group will have a right to produce President. In today Nigeria if i may ask, wen will a bini man be President?

Nigeria simply is not working. We will like Bini to join becos that means other tribes in Kogi can also be invited alongside the Igala.

There is nothing like igbo domination as igbo have no history of ever dominating anybody. That was just Nigeria propaganda to divide and rule us.

everybody on nairaland says things that shock and intrigue readers and that is wat makes the site exciting.

alot are mere rhethoric that are not practicable or realistic.(fiction)

on every thread their are two groups, the for and the against. the battleline is drawn and swords drwan. grin

that is the only reason we come back every day. so if i post a comment to shock and intrigue it is for entertainment.

to stimulate and enrage the contenders to post their own comments and before u know it audience are gathered and the thread is a hit.

it is all entertainment and not practicable or personal, people shouldnt be dumb enough to take it personal.

alot of us get bored and go on nairaland.
