Russian President Vladimir Putin is to miss the funeral of the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, denying the man who failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet empire the full state honours granted to Boris Yeltsin. Gorbachev, idolised in the West for allowing eastern Europe to escape Soviet communist control but unloved at home for the chaos that his "perestroika" reforms unleashed, will be buried on Saturday after a public ceremony in Moscow's Hall of Columns. The grand hall, within sight of the Kremlin, hosted the funerals of Soviet leaders Vladimir Lenin, Josef Stalin and Leonid Brezhnev. Gorbachev will be given a military guard of honour - but his funeral will not be a state one. State television on Thursday showed Putin solemnly placing red roses beside Gorbachev's coffin - left open as is traditional in Russia - in Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital, where he died on Tuesday aged 91. Putin made a sign of the cross in Russian Orthodox fashion before briefly touching the edge of the coffin. "Unfortunately, the president's work schedule will not allow him to do this on Sept. 3, so he decided to do it today," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. He said Gorbachev's ceremony would have "elements" of a state funeral, and that the state was helping to organise it. Nevertheless, it will be a marked contrast to the funeral of Yeltsin, who was instrumental in sidelining Gorbachev as the Soviet Union fell apart and hand-picked Putin, a career KGB intelligence officer, as the man most suited to succeed him. When Yeltsin died in 2007, Putin declared a national day of mourning and, alongside world leaders, attended a grand state funeral in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Russia's intervention in Ukraine appears aimed at reversing at least in part the collapse of the Soviet Union that Gorbachev failed to prevent in 1991. Gorbachev's decision to let the countries of the post-war Soviet communist bloc go their own way, and East and West Germany to reunify, helped to trigger nationalist movements within the 15 Soviet republics that he was powerless to quell. Five years after taking power in 2000, Putin called the breakup of the Soviet Union "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century". It took Putin more than 15 hours after Gorbachev's death to publish a restrained message of condolence that said Gorbachev had had a "huge impact on the course of world history" and "deeply understood that reforms were necessary" to tackle the problems of the Soviet Union in the 1980s. Gorbachev's foundation said the funeral would begin at 12 noon (0900 GMT), not 10 a.m. (0700 GMT) as previously announced. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-will-not-attend-gorbachev-funeral-due-scheduling-constraints-kremlin-2022-09-01/

Soldiers from the Indian army have landed in Russia for a week-long military exercise, India's defence ministry said on Thursday, days after the United States said it had concerns about any country exercising with Russia now. The Indian government said that its forces have regularly participated in multilateral exercises in Russia, along with a number of other countries. Russia is the biggest supplier of military hardware to India. An Indian Army contingent "arrived at the exercise location and over the next seven days will undertake joint manoeuvres to include joint field training exercises, combat discussions, and firepower exercises", the Indian defence ministry said in a statement. Moscow announced in late July that it would hold the "Vostok" (East) exercise in the east of the country, despite waging a six-month-long war in Ukraine, where it has suffered heavy losses of personnel and equipment. China, Belarus, Mongolia and Tajikistan are the other participants. The United States, which has deepened its military partnership with India in recent years, has indicated its discomfort with Indian troops joining the exercise in Russia. The United States has concerns about any country exercising with Russia while Russia wages a unprovoked, brutal war against Ukraine," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday. "But, of course, every participating country will make its own decisions." The previous Vostok drills in 2018 took place on a massive scale with nearly 300,000 troops reported to be involved, including for the first time from the Chinese army. https://www.reuters.com/world/indian-troops-join-russian-military-exercise-despite-us-concerns-2022-09-01/

searchlight:Iran has created a credible deterrence conventinally without nuclear weapons. It has a powerful conventional military that can incur heavy casualty on any invader or aggressor. Iran's Nuclear weapons are for Israel a nuclear armed enemy. The way Iran talks whenever Israel bring the issue of striking Iran's nuclear programme makes me think they have untested nukes. Anyway Israel has a small land mass it shouldn't take much time to destroy major critical infrastructure in the country in a conventional warfare. |
Whobedatte:What are you saying? You said "U.S might not send troops but has its flagship there" so if war starts and U.S start using its flagship you think China and US won't get hurt. U.S will never get in between China and Taiwan fight. |
Lols |
LLSAINT:Iran nuclear programme is so diverse. They have what it takes to enrich Uranium to weapons grade level. Israel won't be able to handle the aftermath of an unprovoked attack on Iran. Hell will let loose. It will be a war that will shake the whole of middle east as Iranian proxies all over middle east would join Iran. Israel cannot sustain such war. It will have a devastating impact on israel's economy and it will damage a lot of things inside israel. Israel has a small land mass. You can't just attack Iran and think you will sleep with your two eyes closed. Iran is not Palestine. |
LLSAINT:Lols... Israel has been threatening to strike Iran nuclear facilities since 2010 and nothing has been done other than sabotage and assasination that made no difference yet Iran's nuclear programme keeps waxing stronger Israeli Mossad should be tired by now. Diplomacy is the only thing that can curb Iran's nuclear programme not military action or sanctions. US knows this already. That's why U.S and its western partners are using the diplomacy route. |
Tunjibalogun:Yes it is a closely guarded secret that's why no country knows about it. |
Whobedatte:That's the truth. America won't sacrifice any of its soldiers for tiny Taiwan in fact it would be stupid of America to do that. They should tread carefully and be wise. They shouldn't allow the west use them they way they pushed and used Ukraine. |
Shoot it down and let the war start jor |
inspirator1:I swear they have it. But they haven't tested it yet if they test it, it will be known to the world and that's what they are avoiding. They are only waiting for a day Israel would launch a first nuclear strike and they in turn would now test those weapons by delivering a decapitating strike on Israel. And it will be a sorry case because israel has a small land mass. |
I believe Iran has untested nuclear weapons. I strongly believe that. The reason the world thinks they don't have them is because they have not tested it. It is a closely guarded secret. |
