Over 800 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom, on Saturday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). APC & PDP Leading the defectors to the PDP, the APC Chairman in the council area, Mr Aniefiok Ekah, said that the defectors had endured severe hunger in APC and could therefore no longer continue to tolerate such. Ekah, who submitted every document belonging to APC in his possession for destruction, however, appealed to the PDP not to treat the returnees as outcasts. He explained that some of them left PDP in 2015 due to cheating by some party leaders, who refused to protect their interests. “This is the membership register, registration forms and every other item in my possession. “They were all given to me by APC, please burn them to ashes, there is nothing like APC again in Nsit Ubium. “We left PDP in the first place because of cheating, middle men were short-changing us of what was meant for party supporters, but we have suffered so much hunger in the APC,” Ekah said. The state Chairman of PDP, Mr Paul Ekpo, while receiving the defectors, thanked them for the bold steps taken and pledged to fully integrate them into the PDP family. Ekpo said that PDP in the state would continue accord importance to the interest and welfare of members, adding that the deflectors would be full integrated into the party. In his remarks, the Speaker, Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Mr Onofiok Luke, said that stakeholders of PDP in Nsit Ubium would continue to hold side by side the philosophy of building industries and empowering the people. Luke, who is also member representing Nsit Ubium state constituency, frowned at some stakeholders, who refuse to report back progress to the people at the grassroots in their constituencies. He assured the people that he would not rest on his oars in delivering the dividends of democracy which spans through educational support, agricultural support and empowerment in numerous sectors. Luke called on Nsit Ubium people to support the state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel to continue in office after 2019. The speaker urged party supporters in Nsit Ubium to receive the defectors with open arms, advising the youths to abhor all forms of criminality and violence by promoting peace in the area. Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, on Sunday refuted reports that he said President Muhammadu Buhari won’t return home because of faulty aircraft. Lai Mohammed, in a terse statement issued by his media aide, Segun Adeyemi, insisted he did not speak with anyone on Buhari’s movement. It reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a report quoting the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, as saying the President’s return to Nigeria may be hampered by a faulty aircraft. “The minister has not spoken to anyone on the issue of the President’s return, hence this report is another from the stable of the purveyors of fake news and should be disregarded”. Recall that the pesidency had announced that Buhari was proceeding to the United Kingdom as part of his annual leave and that he would undergo routine medical check-ups. A statement issued said: “In line with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the President of the Senate, and Speaker, House of Representatives, have been duly communicated. “While away, the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, will perform the functions of the Office of the President.” Osinbajo is currently attending the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. Days before his departure, the President had no public engagements while the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting was also cancelled. Buhari had previously undertaken medical trip twice – February 5, 2015 and June 6, 2015. http://dailypost.ng/2017/02/06/buhari-lai-denies-lying-nigerians-presidents-return/?utm_source=snap_dp1&utm_medium=twitter

A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has berated the Nigerian government for the cancellation of the planned anti-government protest. Popular Nigerian hip-hop artiste, Innocent Idibia, better known as Tuface, who had been at the vanguard of a much-publicised February 6 anti-government protest, cancelled the plan on Saturday, citing “security challenges”. “Dear Nigerians, after due consultations, it has become clear that the #OneNigeria protest scheduled to hold in Lagos and Abuja on Monday the 6th of February is under serious threat of hijack by interests not aligned with our ideals,” the multiple award winning musician said. “The point I am intent on making is not worth the life of any Nigerian. It is, in fact, motivated by the need to demand a better deal for the ordinary Nigerian. “I therefore announce the cancellation of the planned protest. We’ll share further information in due course,” he added. The planned protest gained traction with several public figures and civil society groups pledging to be part of it on Monday. Tuface called for nationwide protest against Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis that has seen costs of goods and services skyrocket, with many families struggling to survive. But police warned against the protest after initially promising to provide security. Police authorities said on Friday they had “credible intelligence” that other groups were planning a counter protests on the same day and at the same venues, saying the event could turn violent. But in a series of tweets on Sunday morning, Mrs. Ezekwesili, a vocal member of #BringBackOurGirls campaign group, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to allow Nigerians cry out their pains. On her verified twitter handle, @Obyezeks, she tweeted, “Mr. Pres @MBuhari Mr. VP @ProfOsinbajo Allow the people of your Land CRY OUT their pain on Monday. LISTEN, EMPATHIZE & RETHINK POLICIES.” Explaining further, the former minister decried the claim of Nigerian Police that it could not secure participants at the protest. “Mr. Pres @MBuhari Mr. VP @ProfOsinbajo Your Govt CANNOT SECURE YOUR CITIZENS THAT WANT TO GATHER AND SPEAK THEIR PAIN TO YOU? Haba. Haba,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said. “Mr. Pres @MBuhari Mr. VP @ProfOsinbajo The people of your Land are CRYING OUT in PAIN. Ask God for WISDOM to GIVE THEM A GOOD ANSWER,” she added. She also implored the Nigerian government to listen to citizens’ plight and not bully them into silence. “Mr. Pres @MBuhari Mr. VP @ProfOsinbajo When the people of your Land CRY OUT in PAIN saying, “Lighten our yoke”, you listen NOT REPRESS,” she wrote. In its reaction to the announced cancellation by Tuface, a civic group, Enough is Enough Nigeria, has said it will proceed with it without the pop star. In a tweet through its official handle, @EiENigeria, at 11:19 p.m. on Saturday, the group announced its resolve to go ahead with the protest without Tuface, adding that it respects the artiste’s decision. “We respect @official2baba’s security concerns but the marches in #Lagos & #Abuja will go ahead. #IStandWithNigeria #OneVoiceNigeria,” the group said. Meanwhile, mixed reactions have trailed the cancellation announced by Tuface. Ogo chris, a twitter user, said: “2baba was just a voice. Nigerians are stronger than the forces that be. Common Nigerians we can!” Toni bliss, another follower, tweeted, “thanks for the leap. will never take tubaba serious for anything in my life. the protest must GO ON. #ISTANDWITHNIGERIA.” Another user, opposed to the rally and tweeting via @Woye1, said ” no March again. Better go to ur office on Monday. Security officers should do d needful. Go and make money.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/222572-tuface-protest-ezekwesii-blasts-buhari-osinbajo-civic-group-pledges-continue-rally.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter
