Sadly, my school doesn't defer till Spring. The cohort is for fall only. But I would rather stay on my job for another year than go to a lower-raking school that admits for Spring, especially now that there is an offer that is ready to send you to even MIT. Most top schools don't admit fresh students for Spring semester but it also varies by departments.

congrats Boss may more big things come your way, Gracais.

This is funny, just by typing KAUST in google would have shown you KAUST means King Abdullah University of Science & Technology. You need to be proactive.

Noted thanks.

You are quite right. It is a good platform for crossing over to the west. The visa processing is easy but these days, it can take a lot of time for your visa to be sent to you even after being admitted (months-years). This may derail your plans. For those planning to apply to Saudi or related Middle East countries, I would advise you to either make it your alternative option (because you may not be issued visa early) or apply very early, like in your final year or immediately you finish your BSc (there are usually two application cycles in a year). This is so that before you finish NYSC, everything will be ready.
For those with competitive GRE scores, you can try KAUST. It is a very nice (relatively) new school with excellent funding and top research facilities. But it is super hard for Africans to get in. Apply anyway, it's free and you might be the exception.
On a side note, the admissions committee really doesn't care whether you are Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Agnostic or whatever....I think

Thanks for the information but it will be of great help if you state the full name of school you are referring to than abbreviating it, thanks.

POE EXPERIENCE! cool

I checked in EGYPT Air (TO JFK) online to make life easy for myself and choose my own Seat for the whole trip.
JFK to Destination (DELTA Airline). GTB Card.(pls take this card to US ohhh )

So i finally got the UBER ride after the third try!! trip to the airport was awesome and cool nice conversation with the UBER driver.
however when we got to MMIA departure, my guys were not allowed to com in embarassed embarassed embarassed i really felt bad.
Passed through their CBP officer/metal Detector/ Bag Scanner. omo those officers there no get chill abeg; i wish Our police officers were that tough.

When to the EGYPTAir Stand and weighed my Luggage. You guest right, they were dam heavy!! i had to buy ghana must go(to reduce the weight) and still tip the guy self to allow me.. (at the end of the day i should have just bought lighter and more flexible Bags with rollers)please don't buy boxes for Yanga OHH... just get something light that you can roll in the Airport.
lesson learnt: if you have alot of load, try to carry four bags 2Check in Bags, a carry on Bag and a School Bag, this combination would help you sort out and over weight issues.dont carry any thing like indomie (Onion;though they never checked it self), kilishi, cellotape, scissors or any perishable in carry On, put them in Check-in Bags (thank me later).

So filled some pointless card and went through Immigration.. they almost seized my KILISHI but i begged like a baby... lol
plus i gave out some cash just to offload m naira notes. but the CBP at the scanner don't smile ohh (don't try tipping self).

EgyptAir make Sense Abeg, nice experience, Decent food too. Egypt Air lodged us at Le Passage Hotel Cairo really cool place, Men plus two meal vouchers for Dinner and Breakfast. omo na buffet OHHHH!! chop and DIE chikena (fear come dey catch me sef). the hotel room fine sef.
EGYPTAIR rocks..my only issue was one spoilt black lady that sat near me spoilt kid.... SMH. and yeah on the 10:55 hrs flight from cairo to JFK you get two meals.... All in All USE EGYPT AIR Abeg if you are on a Budget.... cool

Congrats boss all the best in your career

If you are looking at fall 2018, and you want to write in January, that means you may not meet the deadlines for top US schools. Some of them have December as their deadline and others January. So do your research.

I think the starting point is to get off the fear from your heart. GRE maths are basic maths and doesn't even have complex numbers of calculus. And the English can be surmounted too given adequate and right prepping.

I wrote the GRE when I was fully employed too so I understand your position but let me share some of the tips that worked for me.

1. Use only great GRE books. I suggest in the following order; ETS GRE official materials plus the Powerprep 2 b. Manhattan 5lb and the texbook (use if you have time and if necessary) 3. Magoosh GRE and Videos 4. NOVA GRE Math Bible.

2. Set a realistic time table and stick to it.

3. Begin preparation with a full diagnostic test. This will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. Then face your weaknesses squarely. Ensure you learn strategies and not just keep practicing questions blindly.

4. Download Magoosh GRE flashcards. I used it on my phone everywhere I went to learn GRE words.

5. Read tedious and challenging articles from the NYT, The New Yorker, The Economist, Arts and Literatures Daily, rtf

6. Be patient with yourself. Sometimes you will feel you are getting nowhere but if you keep learning techniques and practicing, you will see your scores improve.

7. Take some time off to cool off.

8. When you solve practice questions, take the pain to review the answers both the correct and wrong ones. Sometimes you learn a faster trick from the solutions. And sometimes you would see that you were lucky in getting the answers.

9. Periodically take full length practice tests online from Manhattan, Magoosh or Crunchprep or the two Powerprep 2 tests. This will help you acclimatize with the real lengthy and gruelling GRE. I realized that Manhattan was the toughest of them all, so your real GRE score may be slightly higher. Note than none of the tests is closer to Powerprep 2 in terms of proximity to the actual GRE, so use the Powerprep judiciously. The only downside is it doesn't show solutions to the questions.

@ no 4 please how do i get the GRE FLASHCARDS thanks for your anticipated reply.

While having a 330 or + is impressive, it guaranteees you nothing;

On this thread, 3 people hit that mark with other aspects of their applications being equally stellar yet I would go out on a limb and say they "settled" for what was given to them.

On the other hand, someone with a 307/309 got accepted into Berkeley. Another with 315, into UCLA. In fact, 2 other great guys on here got into fully-funded MSc programs with a 314!

I am not shading anyone. The message I bring is, even as you aim to re-write, why don't you start doing your own personal research on the school you want and then reaching out to POIs?

In my honest opinion, getting a solid advisor on your side is one sure way of getting admitted and funded into any program. At least, it is definitely better than getting a 330.

Proving you can fund yourself (for Master's applicants and to some degree PhDs too) can go a long way. Don't be surprised to see for e.g that someone with a 319; average GPA and TOEFL; 0 publications got into UT Austin because she had an external scholarship (True story!!) Yet the BGS of her faculty with 4.86/5, 325 GRE, 113 TOEFL was bounced by the same school.

Another thing is the nature of one's previous degrees and schools (countries they trust or schools they easily recognize as well as the program you are applying for). And as far as I am concerned, you have that on lock.

Lastly, you already have a master's degree which would convince any Prof that you are really interested in the PhD (as against using it as a means to getting a master's and dumping the program right after). So you should have no reservations about contacting profs.

The reality is, any Prof. that is willing to accept you would do so regardless of the GRE score. So do not overstate the importance of the GRE as all applications are differen.

[quote author=itzvictor post=59091567]Good evening house, please am a lauctech student but due to the strike my dad told me to research on schools abroad (US)and get back to him ASAP because he wants me to be out on this country this year or early next, the problem is i only have my passport and i have been silently following this tread not know i am going to be needing advice soon. Please, i know nothing so treat me like an amatuer that i am. I wanna know which batch is still on for this year and if am gonna make it or not and what to do first and also the school that is affordable and also offers scholarship. I can leave my emai

You can do this by yourself just make a little research by using google, then return with names of schools you are interested in and the gurus will help you with adequate selection , you don't need an AGENT, at least that's one thing i learnt from this thread, wait for the gurus to comment.

I think it's important to make distinction between magoosh video lessons and the video solutions. For preparation the video lessons in my opinion are better especially for those who are struggling with creating time for prep plus the video lessons are well structured and thus allow concentration on areas where one might be having difficulties.

That said, I observed that most links posted here stopped working after some time, so I don't know if I should post d link or the PM route is better. The video lessons is around 1.4GB COVERING all sections.

I'd suggest you start by watching Magoosh videos, then to the Manhattan 8 series, then pick up the Manhattan 5lb and solve from chapters 7-29. Magoosh videos helps with understanding and revising the basic concepts you may have forgotten, the Manhattan series gives lucid explanations on all the quant topics (and there are lots of questions to play around with), then the 5lb is just the icing on the cake; if u can solve and review all the quant questions coupled with taking some full-lenght practice tests,a perfect score shouldn't be a far cry. It's not as easy as it seems o, but u just have to keep going at it. All the best bro.
PS: Whatever you do, never forget that the ETS official guide i s the bible of the GRE (read it as many times as you deem fit).

please how do i access this videos and can i download and watch them with my phone?

[quote author=teepee4Him post=58469875]Greetings and Congratulations to all Fall 2017 Students. Just thinking I should drop few words in a bid to assist those travelling in here. I will tag it - THINGS I WISH I DID/KNEW BEFORE TRAVELLING TO THE U.S.

1. I wish I knew a student in my school : By all means, PLEASE get at least two 'CORRECT' students in your prospective school that can advice you. Information sometimes can be more useful than thousands of dollars as a new student. I never knew any student in my school then and I still regret a little till date. To make matters worse I entered when school wasn't in session. So, I met no 'CORRECT' student until orientation day.
Likewise, make plans to attend the Orientation. I know some will tell you it is not important BUT I THINK IT IS. Apart from the valuable information you will get, you will also get the opportunity to meet new people. I will never forget the Guy that 'gingered' me after orientation to knock at doors and speak directly with Professors for Jobs - TAs, RAs and the likes. That paid off for me.

2. I wish I learnt a handiwork : To some that are financially comfortable, this might not be necessary but to others on the street this might aid to ease of some stress - Learn a trade. (Fashion designing, Hair dressing, Barbing, even Mechanic). My fisrt day in U.S, after picking me from the airport, my uncle drove me to a restaurant and then to have his hair cut. Lo and Behold - I was shocked to learn he had just had an hair cut for $20 (especially because I just had mine cut two days ago in naija for less less than #300.) I did calculation immediately and was kinda shocked

3. I wish I knew how to drive and came with an International Drivers License. Imagine me - I had access to a small car at home then in naija and wasn't working BUT I JUST DECIDED NOT TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE. That's one of my foolish decisions. Public transportation in the U.S is 'Zero in some cities' and if you dont have a car, it is as simple as you dont have a leg - YOU WILL BE CARRIED ABOUT, not without stress, heavy bills etc. Why not save yourself the stress now and learn in naija. Likewise, INTERNATIONAL Drivers License is permitted to drive with in some states.

4. I wish I spoke the truth. Well, I am not the kind of person that believes in lying but whatever came upon me at the POE when asked if I came with food items, I still can't fathom. I at first said no to the officer. I later said except few dried fishes and snacks. However, I had several types of foodstuffs, from dried fish to Garri to Ogbonno, to Egusi etc. I had to be delayed for about an hour and half where I later now listed all I can remember was in my bag shocked. Not without fear and anxiety. Save yourself the stress and simply tell them what's in there. (They already know)

5. I wish I came with a minimum of three jeans and probably a snickers. . For new students, I don't believe the first few months will be one where you need to spend money on stuffs like wears except you are obo. One or two correct jeans will do the magic. JJC like me, I don't put on jeans in naija so I came with 'half' jeans.

6. I wish I came with an Extension/socket/charger that works in U.S. Laptop chargers, Phone Chargers and other electrical appliances will not work if they are not 'two mouth U.S kinda thing'. N.B: I think Voltage also differs. Few electrical appliances and chargers I came with became a candidate of the trash. (The one wey pain me pass nah my clipper). My candid advice is PLEASE Find and get those extensions or whatever they call it at Ikeja or anywhere else believe me, THIS WILL SAVE YOU ALOT OF STRESS!

7. I wish I came with more medications. I don't like drugs so I came with only a sachet of Pain reliever and 'Tetracycline'. 'After few days, tetracycline finish o'. I have a sensitive digestive system and it reacted to the different kinds of foods.. Likewise, I reacted to the Pain reliever in here. I had to request for a friend to help with the 'chalk' she came along with which is what my 'system' knows as pain

what of wiring ( conduit wiring) ?

[quote author=seeker88 post=57674058]Interview come finally start. Choi, see blue papers flying upandan, small fear catch me, but I still gather morale. It finally got to my turn, and below was the conversation between the VO and I:

VO: Good morning Sir **for my mind, I say this one way this man dey greet me with Sir **
Me: Good morning, how was your weekend?
VO: Great! And yours?
Me: Very well thank you.
*passed my document to him during d greetings *
VO: So tell me why you choose this school?
Me: I chose Texas A&M University Kingsville because the school offers a concentration in Renewable Energy system within their MSc Mechanical Engineering program.... * I never talk finish n vo cuts in*
VO: why the concentration in renewable energy? *I didn't expect this*
Me: The world is moving towards cleaner renewable energy so I wanna move with the trend.
VO: Tell me how the course is gonna run?
Me: I will be required to complete a total of 30 credit hours within 24 months; 12 credit hours of core courses, 12 credit hours of elective courses and 6 credit hours of thesis..... *he didn't allow me finish*
VO: So what are those core courses?
Me: Advanced engineering analysis, Advanced Fluid Mechanics, Continuum Mechanics, *vo cuts in again*
VO: Did you apply to any other school?
Me: Yes, I applied to a total of 6 schools, and got 4 admits, 1 rejects and 1 pending. (I actually applied to 11 schools but I was afraid d VO might see me as being desperate if I mention 11 schools). Thanks to DrHopeful for this advice.
VO: So why did you choose this school over the other ones?
Me: During the application process, I developed a good relationship with Prof ****** who's currently working on a research in my area of interest. He was quite impressed with my GPA and GRE that he agreed to allow me join his research team upon my arrival. *at this point, I saw him brought out a white paper and circled a part, I started stammering...... Couldn't finish d last line as a result. I didn't even hear when d vo mentioned anything on approval. I just saw him passing d white paper to me
VO: *passes the white paper along with my i-20* .....it usually takes 4-5 days to process, I didn't hear

Dear Silent Follower. cool
2.6 Should also give you Msc admission for the same course if you search well or speak to GRAD coordinators of schools that accept 2.6 GPA.

VOs don't like PGD wahala.
And no PGD is not even required for Most job offers.

Universities give you better job prospects at least for an international student. Plus VISA

The only challenge is you getting funding in your i20. But if you can raise at least fees your self then you would have no problem.
Try to give us a clue of your full profile ; GRE,TOEFL etc.

Jumping from chemistry Education to Environmental then Nursing is just pointless.

What do you really Want?!!
An MSC in environmental stuff would pay well too.

Most times they will ask you for proof of payment for the birth so if you cant show full payment then how can you prove you have money to be F1 for both couple. If i were you i would wait till the bill is paid off but that just me. You can take the risk and hope it won't be asked but if it is asked then that a major no no

Yes for now, the tuition might look cheaper than others but what the point spending your "hard earned " money on a degree from a school that will do little or nothing for your RESUME . I think you should re-think this school if its MBA

focus on applying to a proper university , not one of these one building school .
