PoliticsQueen Elizabeth's Lawyers Acted For Politician Looting Nigeria's Money by happysharing(op): 4:34pm On Oct 06, 2021
The Pandora Papers, unveiled on 3 October, is a trove of almost 12 million leaked documents shedding light on tax avoidance via secret offshore companies by some of the world's elite. The data was obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) working in collaboration with more than 140 media organisations.

An elite London solicitors’ firm serving Queen Elizabeth II throughout her reign has represented a politician accused by US prosecutors of corruption, reports The Guardian. While there's no indication of wrongdoing or breaking the law, Farrer & Co, which boasts a long history of representing members of the royal family, finds itself in the crosshairs following the bombshell revelations laid bare by the so-called Pandora Papers.

After the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published the dossier of more than 11.9 million leaked financial documents, Farrer & Co’s legal representation of Abubakar Bagudu over the years has come to light.

According to the Pandora Papers, Farrer & Co started acting for Bagudu in February 2010. It's claimed the company aided the Nigerian and his brother in transferring the ownership of €98 million (£113 million) from a British Virgin Islands (BVI) trust to a jurisdiction in Singapore and the Cook Islands called the Blue Group.

The newly revealed documents show that in April 2010, Farrer & Co sought a response from another firm representing Bagudu regarding their mutual client’s source of offshore wealth. At the time, the firm acknowledged that Bagudu had faced embezzlement charges in line with a criminal investigation and had been arrested and detained in the US for six months. However, Farrer & Co was also given assurances that Bagudu had reached a settlement with the Nigerian government. In line with it, he was granted the right to retain funds held in the BVI trust.
The Nigerian politician has been accused by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) of playing an “instrumental role” in a corruption scheme that resulted in the plundering of billions of dollars from the coffers of West Africa's most populous nation. Bagudu has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

CultureNigerian Wedding: What You Need To Know Today by happysharing(op): 12:45pm On Jul 10, 2021
If invited to a “Naija” wedding, prepare for serious merrymaking, dancing, and eating to your heart’s content. We turned to experts Feyisola Ogunfemi and Jewel Odeyemi to answer some FAQs about Nigerian weddings.

There are multiple layers to weddings from every tribe right from the proposal. For Igbo and Yoruba people, the traditional wedding comes first, followed by a church ceremony that is often referred to as the “white wedding” due to the color of the bride’s gown. Both ceremonies could be days, weeks, or months apart. The white wedding customarily takes place in a church, but modern couples are opting for non-denominational venues.

PoliticsWhy Secession Is Not The Silver Bullet To Nigeria’s Challenges by happysharing(op): 2:02pm On May 30, 2021
Calls for secession from Nigeria are not new. In the 1950s calls for ‘’Araba’’ meaning separation in Hausa language were stridently made in the northern region in reaction to constitutional changes that the region found unfavourable. Similarly in 1966 in the heat of the July counter coup by northern officers to avenge a similar one earlier in January of the same year in which northerners were the main victims, feelings were high for a declaration of an ‘’Arewa Republic’’ by northerners.

Before they take us all on the road to a humanitarian catastrophe, it is time we subject all of their assumptions on secession as a solution to the current challenges in the country one by one, unclad the veneer covering them, exposing the hollowness that they and their champions are made of in the process.

But daunting as the outlook is and tempting as the prospect appears, secession cannot be the solution to our existential challenges as a nation: https://www.nigeriaopendebate.com/why-secession-is-not-the-silver-bullet-to-nigerias-challenges-part-1. Indeed it is a prospect fraught with lurking uncertain dangers not least for its proponents but for the country as a whole.

PoliticsOkada: Time To Wield The Big Stick by happysharing(op): 6:38pm On May 26, 2021
The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration in Lagos is obviously inundated with the dangerous dimension the activities of commercial motorcyclists is taking; their disregard for state traffic laws and restrictions, hence the decision to ban them totally, and this decision is enjoying considerable support from well-meaning Lagosians and Nigerians alike ( https://www.nigeriaopendebate.com/okada-time-to-wield-the-big-stick). “The inability of government to effectively regulate motorbikes is down to the endemic human problems we have in Nigeria, which is also characterised across every sphere of our society.

And this is further compounded by the fact that motorbikes riders are surrogate of the NURTW.” Certainly, banning Okada on Lagos roads is inevitable, but government cannot leave it at that, all the ripple effects of such action must be considered and addressed."

PoliticsIsa Pantami: The Leopard And Its Unchanging Spots by happysharing(op): 2:31pm On May 05, 2021
Mallam Isa Pantami is no ordinary Nigerian. He is a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Pantami is also no ordinary Minister. He is charged with the sensitive portfolio of Communications and Digital Economy. Before his ministerial appointment, he had headed the very sensitive and delicate position of Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency.

As Minister, Pantami oversees the critical agencies of NCC, NITDA, NIPOST, NIGCOMSAT and GALAXY BACKBONE. In this digitalised world, Pantami by his office has access to Nigerians’ private communications, NIN, identities, etc.

He is said to be the Chief Imam of the Al Mannar mosque, Abuja, where he preaches. There is nothing wrong about one being close to his maker, including his present tafsir teaching during the Ramadan fasting season (Ramadan Kareem).

In a video that has since gone viral (which he was later forced to own up after initially denying his previous incendiary and inflammatory statements), he openly castigated then President Goodluck Jonathan, for sending the military to kill boko haram insurgents whose blood he regarded as “our Muslim brother’s blood”.

Hear him: “We are praying to God to answer all our prayers. It is our right and obligation before all Muslim leaders, politicians, government appointees, academics. All of us should not fold their arms and watch helplessly how they shed our Muslim brothers’ blood and cheat them in vain.

Why did President Muhammadu Buhari nominate Pantami in the first place? Can he, as Commander-In-Chief, claim not to have access to information regarding Pantami’s dangerous antecedents? I think not. Or, don’t you know the reason? Simple: his usual infamous inclination towards prebendalism, cronyism, sectionalism, tribalism, favouritism, religiosity and mediocrity.

PoliticsSamuel Ortom: When A Governor Has To Flee! by happysharing(op): 1:29pm On May 05, 2021
On Saturday, March 20, 2021, Samuel Ioraer Ortom, politician, farmer, former Minister of State for Trade and Investment, and now Governor of Benue escaped death by whiskers when assailants suspected to be herders waylaid him on his way back from his farm. According to Ortom, about 15 herders who were dressed in black outfits ambushed him and his security personnel.

According to the Governor, “I appreciate the security men attached to me. They were able to repel them, and the gunmen could not have access to me. And I thank God for my fitness, to have run for more than one and a half kilometres without stopping. It means that God has given me strength, and I am grateful to God.”

Ortom, who has been a vocal critic of open grazing of cattle, reportedly impounded over 200 cows for violating the anti-grazing law the State passed in 2018. The attack on the Governor has been widely condemned by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian Governors Forum, Northern Governors Forum, the Peoples Democratic Party, and as well as many other groups. The former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, also promptly ordered an investigation into the attack.

“Our resolution to guarantee the safety of lives and property within the State shall remain utmost, as security agencies have been directed to enforce the ban. In its usual magnanimity, our administration will give a grace period of seven days for those who wish to carry on with their cattle-rearing business, to register with appropriate authorities”.

What People Said About Femi Otedola's Donation to the Save the Children Fund:

Nigeria Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo said it is “the single largest donation to philanthropy in the country.”

Reno Omokri: “Femi Otedola has just put the billionaires of the North East to shame. Where are the Indimis, the Mai Deribe family and other oil billionaires from the North East? Google their names and some of the first pictures you will see are of their children in private jets marrying President’s children and displaying obscene wealth while surrounded by extreme poverty. It took a Good Samaritan stranger to do what the natives of the North East failed to do! Shame on them and God bless the talakawa that they have refused to look after.”

Femi Otedola would probably be most remembered for his acts of philanthropy in the long run, that is his social entrepreneurship, the readiness with which he offers a helping hand.

PoliticsUnited Nations Call Nigeria A ‘pressure Cooker Of Internal Conflict' by happysharing(op): 3:19pm On Sep 03, 2019
Nigeria’s multiple security problems have created a crisis that requires urgent attention and could lead to instability in other African countries if it is not addressed, a United Nations rapporteur said. Security forces in Africa’s most populous country are trying to tackle a decade-long Islamist insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest and bloody clashes between nomadic herdsmen and farming communities over dwindling arable land in central states.

“The lack of accountability is on such a scale that pretending this is nothing short of a crisis will be a major mistake. If ignored, its ripple effect will spread in the sub-region given the country’s important role in the continent,” Agnes Callamard, the U.N. special rapporteur said. https://www.politicoscope.com/un-calls-nigeria-a-pressure-cooker-of-internal-conflict
