The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says Aisha Buhari, wife of the president, has vindicated its position that the current administration is a “citadel of corruption”. https://www.politicoscope.com/aisha-buhari-the-current-administration-is-a-citadel-of-corruption/ Reacting to Buhari’s wife criticism of the N500 billion social investment programmes (SIP) of the federal government, the opposition party asked anti-graft agencies to swing into action. “Unfortunately, these poor Nigerians have been waiting endlessly for the failed social investments promised by President Buhari only to have their hopes dashed as revelations by Mrs Buhari had shown that the money provided for the programme had been stolen." - Kola Ologbondiyan. “More disheartening is the fact that the said funds were meant for the welfare of the poor, whom Mr President had always claimed to represent in government.” - Kola Ologbondiyan.

Years after a British journalist first suggested the name “Nigeria”, a 23-year-old Ibadan-born student gave the new country its national flag. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi was studying engineering at Norwood Technical College in London when he saw a newspaper advert calling on people to enter a competition to design the Nigerian flag. He mailed his submission to Lagos a short time later, and in October of the following year received a letter inviting him to the London office of the Commissioner for Nigeria in the United Kingdom, where he was told that his green and white design had been selected. He had won 100 pounds ($281 in 1959) as well as a place in Nigeria’s history books. It was October 1959, exactly a year before Nigeria’s independence. Votes are being counted in 29 of Nigeria’s 36 states, after polls to elect state and local representatives. The state elections, which took place on Saturday, came two weeks after the presidential election. In oil-rich Nigeria, some state governors control budgets larger than those of neighbouring countries – so these seats are often keenly contested. President Muhammadu Buhari beat his main rival Atiku Abubakar on 23 February, securing a second term. Mr Abubakar said the election was a "sham" and was not free and fair. He has since filed a petition challenging President Buhari's win. Read why. https://www.politicoscope.com/2019-nigeria-election-ballots-counted-after-governor-elections-vote/

In all of the Saraki dynasty’s electoral battles since 2003, it never worked against the government at the centre, except in 2015. In 2003, the late Olusola Saraki supported his son, Bukola, on the platform of the then ruling PDP. The younger Saraki sought re-election in 2007 and installed his candidate, Mr Ahmed, in 2011––on the platform of same ruling party. In 2015, although Mr Saraki’s political camp worked against the Jonathan-led PDP government, it was widely believed that the people also embraced the APC. In last Saturday’s election, the absence of federal support exposed the weaknesses of the Saraki camp, especially in Asa Local Government and other places rumoured to be its “rigging stronghold”, which the opposition exploited. The re-election of Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s president may not have come as much of a surprise to many Nigerians, but there have been some major upsets in the parliamentary polls. Most shocking has been the collapse of some powerful “godfathers”, who use money and influence to win support for themselves and to sponsor their preferred candidates in elections. Defectors, those who switched sides between the two main parties ahead of the polls, have also fared badly. Here some of the big losers and winners from the vote on 23 February 2019. The Losers: Godswill Akpabio, Bukola Saraki, Rabiu Kwankwaso, George Akume, Shehu Sani, Olubankole Wellington. The Winners: Dino Melaye, Aishatu Binani, Kola Balogun, Yakubu Dogara, Omoyele Sowore. As congratulatory messages poured in for President Muhammadu Buhari over his re-election, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has kept disquietingly mum. Obasanjo slumped into ‘quiet mode’ since February 23, after voting in Abeokuta and advising winners in the election to show magnanimity in victory, saying losers should also accept defeat. “In any competition, there will always be winners and losers. That is what anybody in any competition must be prepared for as a good sportsman. Whoever that wins should show magnanimity. If I lose, I will also bow down graciously. On the 25th of November, 1946, a child was born in Jada, then a small town in what is now Adamawa State, and that child grew up to be me Atiku Abubakarku. Though born into a humble background, I have been fortunate, and life had been a blessing to me. As an orphan without a father or siblings, and a very poor mother, I grew up alone, but have been blessed by divine providence. I was given an education, against the stern wishes of my father, and that education has prospered my life. Over these past months interacting with this great generation of young Nigerians, one thing has shone though: you have a dream to push Nigeria to her full potential, and I say you have the right to dream for that better future for Nigeria. It is possible. We don’t often hear about the Nigerian dream, but I am evidence of the Nigerian Dream. I am evidence that a poor child can rise from very obscure beginnings to prosper in a rewarding career, retire to build an immensely prosperous business, and go on to occupy one of the highest offices in his country. That is my story. More... https://www.goodreadbiography.com/atiku-abubakar-biography/
